I find it weird that people can defend Meltzer now. This happened twice within a year where hes been proven or admitted he didnt fact check things before reporting it. The Punk getting Colt fired story he admitted that he didnt speak to Punk or TK and just ran with that story. Then this recent stuff that was exposed.
The fact he was or is on the AEW Payroll says alot... imagine the news being paid by a political party.. dave is a wealth of knowledge but other than that a fucking joke... spots on his face 20 years older than bucks fans...

That has been the case for 40 years now but somehow people still believe him. He always reported false stuff, made up shit, fell for shilling (going all the way back to WCW producing the 78,000 Wrestlemania 3 lie), couldn't calculate (all his PPV buyrate numbers are completely wrong) and so on and so on. That he succeeded, when better Newsletter like the Lariat didn't, just shows that just like McDonald's, Amazon and Netflix, shit will ultimately somehow succeed if it screams the loudest.

I’m so tired of hearing about Dave Meltzer. I was a fan of wrestling in the 90’s and the early 2000’s. Coming to these channels and hearing stories about that time takes me back. Nostalgia. I didn’t know who Dave Meltzer was back then and I don’t follow him now. I’m surprised so much energy is spent on him. Maybe I’m not the target audience but I don’t click on these shows as often as I used to.

The 83 weeks shows by Conrad Thompson are very good but he spend too much time saying "Meltzer would say" and "meltzer would give the match two stars". So rather than focusing on the action, bischoff would meander into talking about meltzer being full of shit again

If someone he dislikes pops a number and draws money he goes into overdrive to try and claim they didn't actually draw the independently verified numbers they drew. A great example is Hogan. During the physical dirt sheet era he spent YEARS claiming Hulk Hogan didn't even draw half the numbers Nielsen, the PPV Companies, various Arenas etc independently reported.

When Meltzer first hit the sheets he had a vendetta from day one and used to make outrageous claims in the early 90's about WM3 only having 40,000 fans, house shows secretly only doing 2,000-4,000 people, making up conspiracy theories on how SNME's Nielsen Ratings were faked and skewed etc.
That coupled with a lot of BS about guys like Tom Zenk and Jushin Liger "out drawing Hogan and Flair" bullshit narratives that only existed in Meltzer's head.
His impact is so specific to the demographics that don’t matter and so much smaller than you would think it’s unreal.
Most of his followers don’t even watch wrestling anymore.

Booker practically shooed him off by stating after writing that Stevie Ray didn’t deserve his HOF spot, he doesn’t deserve to hang out with him and Flair. Magoo just slinked off in embarrassment. I still remember when Eric Bischoff slammed Andre the Giant when Dave Meltzer was the guess referee.
Wrestling is a form of Entertainment that Dave treats like a sport.. that alone should be a red flag.. What he does would be the equivalent of a journalist who only covers a TV show and spends all his time speculating on what's going to happen next and reporting spoilers. It would be like if a sports reporter like Ian Rappaport spent the entire night of the NFL draft tweeting out the picks before they happen. These reporters in those other industries could easily do those things, they have the knowledge.. but doing so would make no sense whatsoever because there is no value to it.. all you are doing is making the show worse. No one wants to know how a movie ends before they watch it. Contract disputes and things of that nature are different and there is obviously a role for Wrestling media in some respects.. but undercutting the actual content and grading matches on a star scale is childish.. it would be like a movie reviewer giving star ratings to the fight scenes in action movies.. people would understand that to be ridiculous because the fight isn't real... the drama that surrounds the fight is what is actually real, but thats not where Dave's autistic nerdy focus is because he's a mark for "workrate".
The biggest issue with Dave is Dave is basically the equivalent of a fringe, B Movie "Journalist" whose Journalism is based exclusively around his favorite actors. He is the guy who if a Marvel Movie doesn't have his shitty straight to DVD Actor in it he works overtime to fling his shit at the wall and gnash his teeth that they picked a Marquee Actor for the main role, making up whatever bullshit he can dream up to try and discredit said Marvel Movie to his small amount of followers. When it inevitably fails and said movie is a Blockbuster success he tries making up more shit to fling on the wall while denying the movie or it's actors success.

A year later and someone sent Dave a video of The Rock and Triple H from a house show or something from 10 years ago of the 2 arguing and convinced him it was a segment cut from Raw of the two of them shooting on each other trying to get control over WWE and Dave didn't bother to look into it he took it as fact and immediately put out a story saying it was cut because HHH can't wrestle due to his heart condition and they didn't want people to think they were setting up a match but they were shooting on each other because they both want to be in charge of the booking and creative. They're definitely not paying a monthly fee just for some historian aspects. They pay to listen to the podcasts by Dave and co., who will give them their opinion along with unverified "grapevine" info, which listeners will then parrot.

I have been involved tangentially, as Eric put it, with the wrestling business for 30 years, though I have never made my living doing it. I would not come close to calling myself a professional, but even I know the damage that Unka Dave has caused to the business, especially in the last ten years or so. He has changed the very nature of the business among modern fans. People like Kenny Omega, the Young Bucks, and Orange Cassidy would have been laughed out of the business thirty years ago. Even Dave would have laughed at them. Today, thanks to their generous donations and skill at working him, they are getting five stars every time they get in the ring. Unfortunately, the modern generations have never seen real wrestling, so they buy into Dave's bullshit, and the new generation of wrestlers grew up thinking that this is the way it is supposed to look. Now, that fake video game bullshit is the norm in professional wrestling. As a result, wrestling is now less popular than is has ever been, due to the fact that there is only a small subset of fans that this type of wrestling appeals to. The popularity will continue to decline as long as Unka Dave continues to spread this disease within the world of professional wrestling.

It seems Dave, particularly in more recent years, has stopped giving a fuck about the complete veracity of what he prints in his 'newsletter' and just acts like a huge troll towards anyone who remotely disagrees with him. He frequently hypes up his favorite wrestlers(Kenny, the Bucks) in his favorite company(AEW) as though the history of professional wrestling has lead up to their existence, downplaying or even straight up disrespecting the careers & legacies of people that came before them just to drive the point home that he's their fanboy. It's so freaking odd to see a man at Dave's age put forth so much effort at trying to appeal to the fandom of a niche brand of wrestling that came decades after he started his little publication.

Remember when people fully believed that WWE has been sold to Saudi Arabia in a day and these wrestling journalists made a big deal out of it for one day that turned out to be false and some of them had to retract what they said because they didn't even bother making research? I laughed hard when they backpedaled on that one. And these people wonder why wrestling in general isn't being taken seriously by the average person when you've got people thirsty for any wrestling rumors while killing their interest in wrestling in general because of it.
