  • What an honor to chat with the one and only Jason Lytle. I’ve been a fan of both his solo work and his Grandaddy projects for many years. Grandaddy was formed in Modesto, CA in 1992. Their breakthrough album, Under the Western Freeway, was released in 1997. The band’s sound, “atmospheric electronics meet warped Americana,” crystallized on the follow up record, Sophtware Slump (2000). If you don’t know Grandaddy’s music, I highly recommend the album Sumday (2003), which includes so many great songs (El Caminos in the West, Now It’s On, The Go in The Go-For-It, etc.). After two solo records, Yours Truly, the Commander and Dept. of Disappearance, Grandaddy reformed for brief live reunion in 2012 and eventually released another album, Last Place, in 2017.
In this conversation we talk about Jason’s childhood in Modesto, his music, the vinyl resurgence, alone time, the Grandaddy cease & desist logo, the youthful drive to prove yourself, his interesting relationship with nature vs. technology, playing music with John Lennon, his current projects, the mystique of Bob Dylan, what pisses Jason off, his endurance competitions, nutrition, how he has handled himself in the music business, what happens when we die, and many more things.

Time to Connect theme music (“So Long”) by Krajicek & Shafer, from the album Blue Midwestern Dream (Borderline Social Club).

Listened to Sophomore Slump this morning and was wondering about Jason. There was a Live at KEXP 15 years ago where I remember him talking about the choice to move out of LA. At the time I didn’t understand, now I’m in my 40’s and trying to establish my post city life and create meaning with all the experiences, relationships and inputs (like music). That interview shaped me much like his music. Glad to see him doing seemingly well settled in his existence.
