Most charities are by design just upholding a bad status quo. All they are doing it keeping things from turning to total shit. Like when there is a food shortage somewhere in Africa charities provide some food to prevent the worst, but there is nothing done to change things at a very basic level in order to improve things long term and in a sustainable way. Thats also very hard in Africa because many areas are politically unstable, the rule of law isn't reaching every last area etc. All this is why charities like Akon's or Bill Gate's are so important. The start at a very fundamental level(electricity, vaccines), because thats where money can be used most efficiently. The money invested in these projects helps many more people much more sustainably than charities focussing on food or clothes.
The CEOof most charities keeps the lion's share of the donations and the people who need the donations are expected to scrape by with what's left. That's why I don't believe in Charity anymore.

They are trying to install solar panels on 1% of the homes in the favelas. Though that seems small, the favelas are huge. Countless buildings packed together tightly. The solar power will help decrease the crime and poverty in the favelas too.
