    A little tip from mechanics, open the oil cap on the valve head before you open the drain plug. So the oil flows better from the oil pan because a balancing pressure is better and you get the oil out of the engine.

    It's nice to see someone really taking care of their car. It makes me mad when I see people with a motor, maybe only 6 months old, that still hasn't even been washed.
    I have a neighbour here who would drive around with one tyre, almost flat for a few months. Now, the neighbour has a brand new Audi A1, really nice motor, still not been washed and had it at least 6 months. Even IF it was a company car, I still couldn't drive it like that.

    I was skeptical, but this a quite good video. The oil change "kits" are available on the Internet, tools are nothing unusual. Piece of cake.

    Great video. There are a view points I want to point out during your tutorial. They are not necessary but It would be better. I'd warm the car up a bit if it's cold so the oil will flow faster. Then I'd unscrew the engine oil cap to release any vacuum that's still in the engine as it will help make the oil flow better when you unscrew the drain plug.

    1.Warm the engine before draining the oil but not to much.
    2.Unplug the washer and while waiting open the top mouth and you will see more oil draining down ;).
    3.Change the filter.
    4.Put the new washer.
    5. Put the new oil Motul (the best).

    Lucky bastard! Today I was changing the oil on my gti and they used an aluminum t40 head for the plug. I put the socket in and turned, it was stripped instantly. So effin pissed. Good diy btw.

    I always suggest to turn the filler cap a half of turn to the remove position to relieve any oil pressure in the system.

    You want to remove oil filter when the drain plug is out, Filter still creates a vacuum and oil will drip once released. Also you want to use NEW oil on the new filter O Ring.

    ECS plug is not necessary. You can reuse your original plug with a new washer. ECS plug is has a magnetic tip that theoretically will attract any metal particles floating around in your oil pan.

    meanwhile us Volkswagen mechanics laugh at your carefulness. we done enough of these and others to know the tricks whereby you dont need to remove certain lines or take longer... it all comes down to rinse n repeat.. how ever thankyou for taking the time to show owners how to do it emselves... will give me more time to work on these shit box Failure CAV dual charged engines that keep blowing rings

    At the VW dealer that I work at we use 5W40 synthetic oil. We also torque the drain plug to 30 Newton meters. Oh, and if you remove the filter first or remove the fill cap before draining, the oil won't "glug" out of the pan like yours did. Good video though!

      Hi Stantonv, I own a 2014 VW jetta 1.8T, what oil grade do you recommend?

    • @Stantonv
      @Stantonv 9 років тому

      Jorge Bustos Don't believe what you hear on the internet, ask the VW dealer what oil to use when you go there to pick up your new plastic drain plug and filter. That being said, at my dealer we use Castrol 5W40 synthetic.

    Thanks for your opinion. Oil should be warm, but be careful not to burn yourself. Also, please remove your oil filter and allow some time before replacing the drain plug so that all excess oil is drained. This was not done in the video.

    Nice Tutorial! But since the car is on ramps (incline) would it be ok to add say 1L less than the max capacity of oil, then drive the car off the ramps to a level surface then check the oil level and add as needed?

  • @sherman3211
    @sherman3211 12 років тому

    I wouldnt run aftermarket drainplugs until after the warranty period is up, just another wayto be denied. But frankly the oil will drain out rather well just using a standard drain plug, I would just reuse the plug when you do it and the dealer will replace it when they do for the free 10k services. They are good for 2 uses but any more and its kind of iffy. I still recommend 5k intervals, thats what all the techs do who run VWs with synthetic. Think of it as cheap insurance.

    You want a 76mm oil filter wrench for removing a GTI's oil filter. I think your graphic says 27mm, assume that's a typo. Good video though.

    Does the GTI not have a traditional spin on oil filter, I'm thinking about getting a GTI that's the reason I'm wondering cause my 98 corolla has a spin on filter takes me about 10 mins to change it but that filter didn't look like it spun on but I may be wrong

    @turtlejames79
    Finger tight you mean? Highly inadvisable, likely to leak. If you can't go by feel, you are correct at 22 ft-lbs. I am a VW tech and I do finger tight plus about a 1/4 turn on the these cars. I happen to own a TSI engined car as well. Regarding plugs, we actually put a new plug in at every change, I do the same as the threads on the plugs get messed up easily and will become hard to remove over time. 5k changes on these cars, 10k is what we do to save money on free maintenance.

    @ballmer. dealerships always get bitchy. VW dealers in my area use castrol edge sports 5w-30 engine oil. I brought in Shell helix ultra 5w-40 and they gave me a big lecture saying factory spec is castrol edge and not other brands and 5w-40 is slightly thicker. they did end up using the oil i provided but made me fill in a form to cover them selfs. I prefer shell helix ultra 5w-40 over castrol edge sports 5w-30.
