I wanted to be a writer, cartoonist or comic book artist when I was a kid, but my dad kept criticizing it and pushing me towards a career path in science. I always wondered what would've been different if I had gone my own route. Now, years later, I'm trying to do artist and creative stuff and really enjoy it, even if I'm not all that good at it. All I can say to you younger people is that if you can do something you love and enjoy and make a living off of it you should at least give it a try while you're still young enough to make a career shift if it doesn't work out.

I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I started drawing comics because of your videos when I was in middle school. I'm now in my late 20s and work as an art teacher. What I learned from your videos led me to draw, seek an education, and teach because I wanted to be just like you. I'm now working on my own comic book story in my free time. Just wanted to say thank you. You really changed my life and inspired me at such a young age. I would watch and rewatch your videos. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge here on UA-cam.
that’s inspiring man :) im in my summer break for college but i’ve developed my own superheroes and i’ve wanted to make stories about them for so long. actually since middle school too. and as of rn i’m beginning to write the script for this one character’s story, and i’m just grappling into the information i’ve learned through his tips videos. i’ve been having some self doubt about myself whether this is going to be good or not but the story i have for this character is unique and i’ve told my close friends about the journey that this person goes through and they even think it sounds amazing so i’m just trying to get by and accomplish this project

Why do people love anime so much?depending on how it's made and drawn, it can have the best of both worlds. Realistic and cartoony. How well it can blend which makes it super appealing.
You know you may have nailed it. Its because i too think about why i like anime and why it has become so popular. There is just something nice about realistically proportioned, natural coloured cartoon/ anime that stands out to us. This is also why i dont like the overly colourful or "cute" animes we see so frequently these days.
I'm making a comic called skyrider and one of us, I'm making two. Skyrider is about a boy who lives in a world where everyone develops wings but he has none, and he meets a animal that does have wings and together they make a pair.
i dont mean to be rude but i dont think you should share your idea without copyright on the internet, since theres bad people on the internet and copy your idea word for word and release it before you. but this idea sounds very nice

I can’t say I’ve done comics for 25 years, seeing as I’m not even that old yet, but I feel as though my comic journey will be similar to yours in many ways. I have a passion to tell fantastical and fictional tales with fictional characters, but I have a feeling that I just might grow out of it for a time like you have once I’ve gotten it out of my system. Knowing that there’s always something new and thousands of different approaches to making comics and I will feel the need to change it up is really comforting

With tip #3 that is really true about how even if the overall story was good or enjoyable, if the ending is bad that is what you recall. It leaves that bad taste in your mouth when you remember, at least for me
I prefer doing cartoony styles over more realistic usually. When someone asks me why I don't go for photo realism, I always joke that if I wanted photo realism, I would buy a camera!
I'm 56 and writing a graphic memoir using adobe software. I read The Drawing Lesson and I cried my eyes out in the end when she moved away from him. That's realistic and I loved it, and the emotions had me thinking about it ever since.
I would love to see a video of how you construct an outline. Obviously it would have to be a very basic story, but seeing the process you'd go through would be really interesting.
You know, what? 'Cartoony' artwork is deceptively difficult, just because it's not realistic! ( Well, for me, anyway) I totally respect anyone who can do cartoons WELL. Thanks, Mark 🙂

Hi. I watched your videos years back on tutorials as my weakness is anatomy so your approach is simple and I saw your book here in the Philippines. Back in the early 1990s I made a self made SCIFI novel and the story "as it goes" as I never prepared a script. After completing, it ended up also my personal guide not to do next time if I do another graphic novel. I really love watch your videos and lately made my own channel. Thanks for the inspiration. Mr. Mark, I really envy you that you're doing the thing you love for 25 years! Congratulations! BTW, this is a lesson that I learned about the cartoony (or in some cases, crappy) artwork. A great story would definitely carry a cartoony artwork. Examples are: Attack on Titan and One Punch Man. I also read in the app called Webcomics and even amateur artists can submit works there. I check for these comics with unproportioned body, unnatural/ stiff poses etc. but the stories are really entertaining that you won't even bother to point out those things anymore when reading. (I'm not saying that artists must be contented of what they are now, because I'm a believer for improvement). Visuals are definitely important but for me, a great story is the very core and foundation of a comic/manga.

I have been feeling down for a week now because my first manga is going to be published in February 2021 and it stresses me a lot because I don't know wether people will like it or not, and I've really put my heart into it. I love the story and I hope that my readers will appreciate it too. So thank you so much for being so open to us ! It truly makes me feel better, knowing that this is a natural state of mind that every author goes trough at some point in their career.
I image you've had some experience with the blue line coloring process, and obviously you're coloring this traditionally. Would you ever do a video sort of explaining the ins and outs of traditional coloring for comics and what materials or methods work best for reproduction? I feel like this is isn't really touched on here on youtube.

"The Midway Dread" is what I call what you talked about with 6. >_< Tip from me: Sometimes I take a break and carefully reread what I have up to that point I'm at and decide from there if the plans really work towards the events I have planned. Sometimes I'll adjust the end, sometimes I edit what I have, usually it's a blend. I know first drafts are messy, but I also feel like getting the best first draft possible (for me) is incredibly helpful.

And I love what you said here about how you have pivoted with each new project you do. Sometimes I find myself stuck in the same genre or stuck with the same type of story so it's a good reminder to try something new for optimal growth. :)
Thanks for the advice as always. I've been wanting to start comics for a while now but I've been too scared to even put pen to paper or stylus to tablet, as the case may be. Even if I end up starting a page they always remain unfinished, taking up space on my laptop's hard drive. In a way, it's almost like I've gotten scared of drawing! Is there something I can do to rid myself of this affliction?
