Oh, thanks man. I'm nervous AF. Hahaha! Please Francis, tell me how I can be more like youuuuu.
@@SiyaOum You're doing great! Like me? That's a terrible idea... lol
@@FrancisManapulArt hahaha!
I like the internet because it shows you people that speak your language
yep yep
the second you sell this as a print i'm buying
That sounds like a challenge, hahaha! Thank you so much! Have a great weekend. xoxo
So, just re-watched as I was getting ready to head out... First time around I somehow missed the part where you said 200 pages!!! 🤯 Bloody hell, that's crazy! I was impressed by the suddenness and brief timetable...now I'm astounded! Go Siya Go!! lol
Hahaha, yeah, I'll make sure to update you guys on how much sleep I get or don't lol.
I couldn't relate and appeal more than I can to this 23 minutes, I'm no pro, I'm an unknown... but I'm doing a book out of a story taught during the pandemic, and now I'm fleshing it out from notes and ideas that I wrote at the time and drawing from a mayor source...my mind...so, I definitely find your video inspiring cause a pro of your class, can do something that I thought was wrong or a bad way, primarily because I'm doing everything on it, well, she is my new role model, so it can be done, thank you for helping me out in proving that, what I loved to do, wasn't a crazy idea!!!... thank you!!!
I know how you feel. Ideas always seem crazy, but we won't know if it can be done if we don't try. It sounds trite, but it's true. It's not failure, it's how we grow, faster, better, stronger. Good luck to you!
Even if we try to do what u do, we would fail, because you are unique. So better to find our own path hehe. Thanks again!
Hahahaha, totally! Let me try this first, and I'll let you know if there are booby traps afoot.
So excited for this project. You can absolutely do this. Since you are going to manage all of the aspects yourself, it will be important that you don't put undo stress on yourself with unrealistic deadlines. Take your time and if you are crowd funding, as long as you keep open and regular (monthly) communication with your backers, they will support you 100%. When we published our first board game on Kickstarter (Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood) we did everything ourselves too and learned a lot. But it was our open/honest communication with our backers that saved us when we ran into those inevitable delays.
Oh no doubt, I'm with you. I do feel like this deadline, since its my own feels great. I'm so excited. It was the same reason I opened my shop prior to crowd funding, to see how it all goes. I love interacting with readers and fans, it's the best! Thanks so much for your words of encouragement, it'll be a face plant worth having hahaha. *high five.
I feel the same way in my art at sixty years old. Your best work is long down your road of experiences. Enjoy the journey as best you can.
Very well said and great for us to know, it's a long marathon, and a life choice to be an artist. Thanks so much for your comment!

I don't know if you've gotten the answer already, but if they are under a publisher and they're doing a weekly chapters of their manga, then the mangaka have assistants who are tasked with different parts of the art. There's no set amount of assistants or specific jobs like there are with American comics and that process (penciler, inker, etc). There's just the assistant who does background, or the assistant that finishes characters after the mangaka sketches them out. One assistant can handle screentones, one can write dialogue and the speech bubbles. There are assistants who handle the color pages on the occasions when there is a color page or two in the chapter. Even the editor can come in to help with finishing pages to hit deadlines. There are mangaka doing monthly chapters with assistants also.
There are mangaka like Akira Toriyama (R.I.P) who did most of the work by himself, so you're in good company. But a mangaka usually has a team with them to hit their deadlines, and it's standard practice. Then there are stories like Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of Yu Yu Hakusho. He burnt himself out hard doing all the work for the manga and wrecked his health in the process. The sad part is that even with assistants, there are far too many mangaka who've burnt out or had health problems working in manga, though more and more mangaka are starting to take breaks and not drive themselves into the ground to hit their deadlines.
But good luck to you. I don't know if you remember my comment, but I decided to do a Ninja Turtle Fanzine. I asked my brother to help me with the story, so once that's done I can just make a comic and make something cool and enjoy the process and just be a Turtle fan and finally fulfill something I've really wanted to do.
Either way, good luck to you. I hope you get everything you need from your journey. I hope you got everything you needed from this part of it.
EPIC!!!! Cant wait for this!!!!
Thank you so much!
I could listen to this talk all day because these are the beautiful honest, realistic talks I have with myself like...all...the...time.
They just motivate me because I know for sure now, that other folks think this way. And that's all I need to keep going for myself.
I'll hold myself more accountable in my artistic pursuits. Gotta put the work in. I weight train and have a night job in a warehouse, so I tend to be drained...and yet it's no excuse.
I believe in you, Siya. 🤜💥🤛
Awwww. Thank you for this. I completely know the feeling of thinking maybe you're the only one who feels and thinks a certain way. Perhaps even, that people who do draw for a living think differently. We don't. We feel and think the same-- and I'd like to put all of that out there so that we can all create more art. Have a wonderful weekend. And good luck to your journey!
All this just made sense to me, and it hit different. Here we go.
It's something I'm sure we all think about or do, already. xoxo
I have 2 stories in my mind that have been running, updated, rewritten and continuously edited for at least 3 years now. Maybe this truly is the way....
In any case, I want to thank you again for being honest about your creative practices and allowing someone like me to have a look at how you are choosing to grow. It's very helpful and one day, I believe that all my practice will prove to have been worth it.
Oh thank you for sharing yours with me! Truly, the only way to grow is if we determine to grow from something. I can easily say a lot of the mistakes or missteps are for nothing but they seldom are. Everything is useful in some way. Have a wonderful Sunday!
Super excited for this project! Love how you jump head first into these things and say "F@%$ it! I'm going to make it work!" Great "CAN DO" attitude. Very inspiring!
To a fault hahaha, "f@$k it", "Oh, sh!t."
this is such an intense undertaking and i really appreciate that you're documenting it because i'm preparing to do the same.

I absolutely agree with you. There's no downside in working on your own project! Especially in the day and age we live in in the comic/manga industry, we can do so much, and working on your own personal project to get that self artist fulfillment is worth it. Which artists have influenced your drawing style the most? I definitely need more artists to study and learn off of. Lol
oh boy... what you meant to say was, who hasn't influenced me? Lol, it has changed so much...Michael Turner and Jim Lee, at first. I guess I'll leave it there.
beautiful!
Thank you!
That's how I work too. Im no pro but I storyboard and sometimes write like what Tartokvsky and Miyazaki do. Its easier to create a fuller atmosphere and white space for pacing, building mood and reality to a story. When I write im too dense. Drawing everything out I notice and create details. But I utilized both.
I relate to pushing yourself after a plateau. Im still in the process as a writer and artist but im going head on now in making comics and setting up premade content for my upcoming UA-cam channel as well as getting to the point that i can draw like Master Kim Jung Gi. Annoying balance because I try to stay literate and improve my knowledge and expand it through reading a lot of books.
Also I find your project real interesting working that way with your art first then story! Looking forward to seeing your indie comic!
Thanks for a great video!!!

Yay! This warms my heart and much of what you're saying echoes with me. As a former colorist who burned out on too many deadlines and now working a nice stable day job at a packaging company, I'm gearing myself up for something very similar in an effort to put to an end the whole reason I got into comics in the first place: to tell my stories instead of gathering them in files upon endless files and to stop saying yes to what everyone else wants. Best of luck with your journey and I'll definitely be watching for extra tips!
High Five to that! We're not getting any younger, and I don't know if I want to look back and not put the stories out there. Best of luck to you, and welcome to the club!

glad to have found your channel.
Thank you!
LOL!! You was like..."I told everyone what i do and how i get it done, direction purpose and organized...." LETS TRY SOMETHING NEW!!!!!!! This is great and just more exploration on developing more skills in a fraction of a time. Even though its on the fly, this will take a lot more of your time cause there isn't script, guide lines, nothing you can put down and say I will take break from it cause its all there already. You will never be able to walk away from it like a book that is scripted already. You can do this and it will be a great adventure, the manga and your journey! GET INTO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

@@SiyaOum you’re very welcome!
Thank you for this video, perfect timing for me, since I'm making a game and I need to complete it in around 3-4 months because of financial reasons. I had a learning period of about 3 years where I learned the technical aspects of game making and the art side of it, since I want to do that part myself too. Also, I was lazy a lot, so I wasted a lot of time.
During that period I still wasn't thinking about what kind of style I want for my game, or which setting to put it in so recently in a short period I had to decide in which direction I wanted to go in, style wise, and deciding on a setting I love (I also love sword and fantasy, and I love science fantasy) while making the gameplay doable to make in such a short period. It boiled my brain.
I can relate to feeling overwhelmed, and feeling lost and confused because of the sheer amount of information and knowledge and decisions that have to be made, especially when you have to do most things yourself alone, and I can relate to feeling afraid, because frankly I'm terrified. I'm scared of not succeeding and not being able to do what I love.
I don't think it gets easier, I think such pressure is part of a solo endeavor like that, and will always be. But we grow stronger, and we learn not to put our thoughts on the negative aspects, and we learn to deal with the pressure, to the point where we can focus on the things we love, and we learn to enjoy the process. The only thing that ever matters is, never give up!
Btw, I got stuck on the story aspect and what helped me is to build the story from the visuals, not the visuals from the story. For example, if you need dialogue, first imagine the visual emotions and expressions the characters make, their poses and movements and their interaction, and then layer the actual words on top of that. The same goes for everything else, imagine visual scenarios, battles, movements, locations and then stich them up together, basically a visual story board that spawns the story. And most importantly don't dwell too much on a single thing (I'm looking at you George R. R. Martin ua-cam.com/video/xR7XMkjDGw0/v-deo.html)
Anyway, thank you for this video it really helped me feel like I'm not alone during this stressful period. Your art is absolutely beautiful and I wish you the best of luck with your dreams!
Also, here's a song that might help ua-cam.com/video/Y1QE3sLdbQI/v-deo.html
Thank you for taking the time to write me this beautiful and thoughtful comment. I wish you the best of luck in your game development journey. At some point to say "f*ck it, I'm getting after it." Works for me, hahaha. That's where I am at mentally, and emotionally, right now. I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Thank you so much again for sharing your story with me! xoxo

I’m really excited for you, it sounds like a huge task. I hope you can keep us updated as you progress. I’d really like to hear at the end how you think your style has changed from now to when you finish. Good luck, I’m rooting for you. I wonder if speed was the issue why you wouldn’t just go digital for the whole thing, but I guess it sounds like the idea is to be quicker at what you do. I think doing breakdowns digitally, (or the name if we’re sticking with manga language) would be helpful. Again, good luck!
Thank you so much! I will do frequent updates via episodes. Yep quicker and better for me means paper, and printing. I’m not as fast digitally, and don’t like how it looks, aside from digital colors. It’s just my taste preference. I like it when other artists do digital works. Thank you again! This one is a doozy! Haha.
Good Luck ! This is exciting for you and scary!!
Hahaha, very much so, and thank you!
YOU keep going I am actually going through that with my art where i want to really start painting, man it is tough!
Looks great
Thank you so much 😊
Thank you so much for the imagery and being real. This vid inspires me to keep going. Looking forward to the end result👍. Also, don’t know if you’re aware, but one of the greatest source materials for manga insights is the show Manben by Naoki Urasawa. I literally watch episodes every single day lol!
I have not seen that, at least I don't think so, I will check out Naoki right now! Thank you so much!
Update, so I have seen Naoki's channel, but I will watch all his videos now. Thank you!
I'm at just the beginning of the video but I already feel totally agree with all the words you say. I am a comic book rookie, working on my very first title. I'm just the artist, I did not write the story so it's note "my" stuff and drawing something I don't like turns me off. I already feel the urge to do something I love, drawing with fun and pleasure. Happiness is the cornerstone of art (I suppose) and it's important to value it the most as when can. It's difficult to feel free as much as we should in this business but hope does exist, right ? My message was messy, sorry for that -__-' and btw you are a top level artist, very inspiring. Big hug from France :)
Thank you so much! You are right, art should be enjoyable and freeing. We all strive for that. Doing it for as long as I have for work, I forget that sometimes. Thank you again, and good luck with your art!
Your work is absolutely stunning and your work ethic is off the charts! One hundred percent inspiration as I have my vision board of a half dozen projects in my queue. As I near completing the book I am writing I'm already dreaming of my next project, but I don't want to steal my passion from one thing for the other until I'm done. My biggest challenge is that my projects span many different disciplines from music production, to traditional writing, painting, illustration, and the scariest of all to me creating a couple of comic books. I love ink, watercolors, Copic markers, Faber Castell pencils, and gel pens. Logistically it's like trying to climb a cliffside. As I plan for the comic in my head, my book starts to seem like a cakewalk. I am also diving in deep with researching Kickstarter campaigns and nervously daunted on making it successful as many of my creative endeavors have been a loss financially. You have earned my subscription!
Having multiple projects in our head is almost a requirement to being a creative! Hahaha! I think we all feel your pain and joy. Good luck to whichever direction you dive into head first! *high five!

I remember seeing, and being inspired by, one of the original keyframes for Neo Wonderland a few years ago (the one that is an upshot of characters flying off a building)! Did you say 45 days for art production (so 4 pages per day)? I'm still plowing through my art journey, but all of your process videos and replies to my comments have been immensely informative -- one day I hope to be treading these waters, but I am grateful for the ability to stand on the shoulders of giants that came before! I'm curious if you have any tips on how to get faster, for someone who's too focused on little details, and time escapes them?
Thank you so very much! The simplest trick you can utilize right away is, to not focus on details is, squint your eyes, so it's blurry, in order to focus on basic shapes and composition first. I began as a kid, yes. I never stopped. Thank you so much! I wish you the best on your art!
Beautiful work! If I can ask, do you also work on client work that you have to juggle while doing your comics or are focused solely on your own project? I am a full-time artist but I have a hard time balancing client work with my own personal work.
I do comics full time, and my clients are comic related, which takes up most of my time ATM, as I venture into my own publishing company. It is indeed tough, but if I/we don't start, it may never come. There are more examples now of other artists/creators who are doing well, and I hope to be one of them. Thank you for your comment! :)

How do you create characters that don’t sound the same? You have a method to keeping characters different when writing them?
Hmmm. It can be easy to fall into that trap, as I know the characters can get that way if we're not careful, I guess to achieve their own unique "voice", make them play off of the protagonist, so that can mean the opposite, or their role in the story. This is just a simplistic take on it. I'll have another writer on my podcast to ask them that same question!
@@SiyaOum thanks for the replay! What’s your podcast? You think you could ask your writer friend about characters sounding to close to the writer-a ton of my character’s sound like me 😱 lol thanks again for such great content!

You were in all these Digital Art magazines like ImageFX. Did a ton of comic and freelance work, then you did animation and successfully made a living as an artist for years. What are you so nervous about?
I’m nervous about things I have never taken on. The responsibility to fulfill the expectations of the fans and people who have supported my work for years, is nerve wracking, and an honor all at the same time. :)
What board are you using to sketch on your table?
This is the Canson Recycled XL, I have a link to it in the video description. Super cheap but great!
@@SiyaOum Oh no sorry not that I meant the board your using. lol
@@fruttlicious Oh hahaha, one of these:
Artlicious Drawing Board - 13 x 17 Sketch Boards
@@SiyaOum Than you! How is it holding up?
@@fruttlicious great actually. I don't use it all the time but it's fine especially for the price.
Be careful because the story may run away from you. It has happened to others just ask Frank Miller
