Seriously, this scene could be a dark fairy-tale all in itself. Young hero escapes the cannibal swamp hag by wooing her and then cutting off her head as she gazes at her own ghastly reflection. Ridley Scott really knew his shit back then!
Hard to believe it was Robert Picardo (The Doctor) in that makeup. This film was truly a work of art. You can tell a makeup is very good if you cannot see the actor or actress underneath.
Beautiful practical effects. Ah, the childhood memories of Alien/Aliens, Clash of the Titans, The Thing, Empire Strikes Back, Krull, Labyrinth, etc. The late 70's and 1980's were AMAZING for cinema.
The work these folks put i to these movies were so amazing!!!! Legend...Lambrinth...that is real one in one stuff. Maybe that is why Mr. Cruise still lives doing his own stunts to this day
IIRC, Picardo supplied only the voice. The actress inside all of the prosthetics is Patricia Tallman, best known for playing Lyta Alexander in the series "Babylon 5."
Also one last thing I have wondered what Meg Mucklebones story is and what her allegiance to Darkness is since she resides in the swamp in front of his tree castle.
Ah Legend. i really miss movies like that. they used to be made so well. and no CGI. people actually wore the costumes and used fake blood instead of special effects. today, movies wont even use fake blood. cutting corners makes movies suck. CGI should be saved for animated movies.
Exactly Mercury, I feel the exact same way. Movies from our youth just had better stories and looked better along with such better character development. Now they waste so much time on useless shit in movies just to make one group or another happy.
I like how when he first calls her fair, she immediately looks at her reflection in confusion like she’s wondering if she left a glamor on or something
OH, INDEED I DO!! This is how you do a swamp hag. I don't know who's in that suit but Meg looks eight feet tall and like she could wrap her hand all the way around your skull. She scared me more than Darkness when I was a kid.
Awesome! This was much longer than the version I've seen, I always thought it was a strange scene how it jumped to head chopping so fast. Now it all makes sense.
Tolkien was basically (not to mention nothing was basic about him) the grandfather of modern fantasy and it is widely rumored to have inspired Legend of Zelda.
I was lucky enough to share a drink once with actor David Bennent (guy who plays Gump) who lives in the same city as I do (Berlin). I told him how this movie disturbed and fascinated me as a young child. And he asked me how old I was when I watched it on TV and I told him that I was 8 years old. And he answered quite gently and calmly: 'Oh, it is quite ok for an 8 year old to watch that sort of stuff.' OK I thought by myself and kept quiet for the rest of the evening.
English Urban Legend Meg Muckle bones lure children to their death if you cross her. She is a legend in England! So cool to see her in Legend! Scary as hell even that laugh! Reminds me of Hansel & Gretel and the wicked witch!
I recall watching this movie when it came out and thinking to myself what an amazing film this is and why isn't it getting more praise? The special effects, visuals, Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, Ridley Scott, Bryan Ferry and Jon Anderson were all top notch.
You can't tell under all the makeup but the actor playing Meg is Robert Picardo, who would later go on to play the Emergency Medical Hologram from Star Trek Voyager.
Pumpkinhead was actually designed by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. who later went onto form STUDIO ADI who did the effects for Tremors and a plethora of classic monster movies, they were working on Aliens when this was released as they were part of Stan Winston's effects team!!! They almost had the chance to do the creature effects for I Am Legend when Ridley Scott was set to direct in the late 90's!!! Stan Winston Studio and Studio ADI both have UA-cam Channels, both are worth checking out!! However, I feel that Rob Bottin should come out of retirement! If that's what he did in 1985, imagine what he could do now!!!
Hmmm not all us fairies taste bad.... I was thinking more of "Come to (my name), juicy boy!" or "Who be this tender morsal?". Unlike Meg though I would not have any intentions of eating them.
This scared the absolute bejeesus outta me when I was little 😆 the makeup and animatronics were way ahead of their time for when this was made. Tim Currys' Lord Darkness is still my all time fav villain with Lucifer from Constantine being a close 2nd.
Good thing Lily was too smart for darkness. It's implied that Meg was a princess or beautiful maiden that allowed herself to be corrupted by darkness, before enduring such a ghastly fate and transformation.
The craftsmanship that went into creating these characters, especially Meg, is freaking unreal.
Seriously, this scene could be a dark fairy-tale all in itself. Young hero escapes the cannibal swamp hag by wooing her and then cutting off her head as she gazes at her own ghastly reflection. Ridley Scott really knew his shit back then!
Roll for charisma. 20

My wife - "Do you intend to keep watching this clip all the time, and especially at night?"
Me - OH INDEED I DO!!!!!
My life as well 🤣

Beautiful practical effects. Ah, the childhood memories of Alien/Aliens, Clash of the Titans, The Thing, Empire Strikes Back, Krull, Labyrinth, etc. The late 70's and 1980's were AMAZING for cinema.
B. N. Willis The DARK CRYSTAL, THE REANIMATOR, Robinson's BAD TOOTH. Great stuff.
you said it! they definitely dont make movies like these anymore!
You had the Alien films in your childhood? That's badass dude.
Yes! Facts
Like music
How is it possible that movies from 30 years ago far exceed the new movies in both story and effects.
It doesn't rely on super phony cgi. But actual costume and animatronics.
It does. Cgi sucks
Effective realism. It’s fine to have abit of cgi but making a great movie is about practical effects as well as costume, lighting, sound and so on.
The work these folks put i to these movies were so amazing!!!! Legend...Lambrinth...that is real one in one stuff. Maybe that is why Mr. Cruise still lives doing his own stunts to this day
Because more care and attention went into the making of the movie back then so the finished product looked more awesome to watch!
One of the greatest movies of all time. Flicks like this made my growing up the best ever. Meg traumatized me...and I loved it.
Absolutely. This is still terrifying.
This is a prime example of why CGI is “NOT BETTER”.
Absolutely
If it's done right, it's ok, but this is an unparalleled example of practical FX.
There’s plenty of bad practical too. I hate that blanket argument.
You'll be even more surprised about the actor that played the character.
Well said. It’s just amazing how the sets were also hand created and the makeup work is beyond phenomenal.
Robert Picardo is such a good actor.
Right! I can't believe this is the doctor from star trek voyager!
@@daywalker3735 off subject, it's crazy to know Glenn Close played a male pirate in Hook. Did a remarkable job.
I do the voice perfectly love to scare my coworkers by quoting lines from meg 😈

Mucklebones gave me nightmares as a kid, one of the creepiest characters in cinema, great movie takes me back to the 90s
It was 1985 man!! But give me cinema from the 70's, 80's and 90's any day over modern movies!!!👍👍
She gave me a fear of swimming
Same. They had a prop of her at a haunted house thingvi went to once as a kid. It was huge like here i. The movie. Scared the HELL out of me
Love this scene...meg is terrifying....OH INDEED I DO..... classic

Robert Picardo - You know him as the EMH Doctor on Star Trek Voyager one of his first parts
All of the cheap cgi and bad story telling is nothing compared to the art and creativity we used to have.
little elf child has the voice of a 65 year-old smoker. Some creative casting there.
Interesting tidbit. The statue seen on the left from 1:05-1:12 is of Pazuzu. You might remember this demon from the original The Exorcist movie.
Nice find
That is utterly DISTURBING
Holyyyy SHIT. WOW.
Holy fuck. That's gotta mean Hollywood is in league with Satan. Nice find.
@@VRmission38 You are profoundly simple-minded if you think that actually means something Satanic in a Christian sense.
The costume design meg is very similar to pumpkinhead.
1:20 Far left--Statue of Pazuzu (The Exorcist).
Meg was so awesome. And those claws are some of the coolest things I've ever seen--they totally inspired a character of mine!

Scariest thing about this scene is that somewhere in that swamp there are Magpies and poor Jack doesn’t seem to know the danger he’s in.

So apparently this is Robert Picardo? O.o

Yep
1985 was a rough year for him I suppose. He does look much healthier by the time he appeared on Star Trek.
Another brilliant acting performance from Robert Picardo (AKA the doctor in Star Trek Voyager) Yes, It's the same guy.
