Epic update! it's sad that Mutable Instruments is going out of business, but this is leaving on a very high note. I'm building a case designed around it and Plaits has become my favorite oscillator, you can squeeze SO MUCH out of it. I don't think there's any other oscillator out there other than maybe Intellijel Shapeshifter, and that one is much bigger, more expensive and in my opinion not so elegantly designed. Wish Emily success in whatever is next.
Got round to updating today.. Download file to iPad.. Prep Plaits.. iPad to Model input.. Go…! (Lots of Red Lights..) Press ‘A’ again, raise Freq to 2 o’clock.. 3mins later, Hooray..! Am now able to bore partner with explanations and demonstrations..😃👍
This one's a gamechanger :) I just got a plaits right before this update dropped and I'm glad I did. The new modes are good fun and the frequency knob octave-switching mode is great for performance too. Love your demonstration of it as always.
Thanks for this info. Looks a great update. Loving this series of videos on Plaits. To hear great musical examples is so much better than the bleeps and noise on some videos.
Fantastic, was hoping you'd make this video! Also hoping the new firmware is released as open source at some point. Some of the features, particularly the FM could be easier to use in software, and would be an amazing update in VCV etc.
@@TheUnperson yeah, I read on the VCV forum that MI have now made it available, so hopefully it can be incorporated into any clones and virtual versions. No timescales yet but should be possible 😃
Just about to start - We were all hoping you'd do this, after just finishing your Plaits series! Time for a glass of wine, or perhaps two, while we see what madness you wrench out of this. As always, thanks for the amazing videos. As for updating from the Audio Interface... I use a Scarlett 2i4, and it's dead simple. A 1/4" to 1/8" TS cable (6.5 to 3.2mm) from the Scarlett headphone out into the relevant audio in (same for any MI module) and simply adjust headphone volume or frequency, doesn't really matter which. I never use my phone, just VLC player out through the Scarlett, and it works perfectly every time. I have to restart maybe 2-3 times just to tweak the level, but that's all.
Unfortunately not so straight forward on my interface. No matter what volume configuration I used on my interface or Plaits it wouldn't work (easily tried over 100 times haha!) Phone worked perfectly.
For those who have trouble playing wav firmware files into modules that use that update method, if you have a sample module like the 1010 Bitbox I've found that they're a great way to play the file into the module. For the Plaits update I needed to adjust the gain (Frequency) knob to about 2 o'clock to get a good input level, but other than that it works great as the file will play clean with no interruptions. For the Bitbox, just copy the file to the SD card and then load it into an empty grid cell. After prepping the the connections & powering on the module into update mode tap the cell to start playback.
Great video, thanks a bunch for being on the fw update! When you look to evntually wrap up the series, I for one would greatly appreciate some general thoughts on the overall logic of the module with all the different modes and banks. If I my senses are right, it seems to me that morph most often is related to basic frequency content (filtering, feedback, resonance), timbre is related to the shape of the sound source and harmonics is used for more complex and less general maneuvres within each mode. Really appreciated how you layed this out in the first video also with the use of the attenuverters to add internal envelope, so would love to hear your thoughts in a similar kind of overall recap. I find that such general takeaways are especially helpful for general experimentation with a complex module like plaits, when I am not in the mood for learning any particular mode deeply. Again, thanks for an amazing series!
Man I just finally succeeded in the firmware update on my Plaits (after MUCH ado btw)...thank goodness...I thought I'd fried it cuz it was kinda froze with like 6 out of the 8 lights lit red. Found out why & it was me of course. Anyway, just awesome. I love having the orange mode especially in Plaits because the red is not so much for melodic anything. I've found amazing stuff out of every new sound and I'm just starting. And, might I say, Plaits into Beads is pure, unadulterated golden magic. I hadn't got into eurorack until about 3 years ago so I never owned Clouds but love Beads dearly. And I love using Mutable modules together because you can hear them do things together as a unit they can't do on their own or with other modules. I'm grateful that I started cutting my teeth with Mutable and managed to put a nice system together based on them
I had a nightmare updating the firmware too ~ nearly drove me mental! I totally agree about MI modules working together.. they’re so well designed that each module perfectly compliments the others :D
@The Unperson great work on your deep dives man. I learned a bunch of little stuff I didn't realize watching your Plaits, Rings and Beads vids. Thanks man
Great update and a cool video with some great musical examples. Plaits seems to be one people get early on and migrate away from, but there's so much depth there and that was before this update!
Back in my DX-7 days, the plethora of .sysx collections scattered here, there and everywhere were often hit or miss. A video on some good banks for Plaits would be great!
huge huge update. never expected an update of plaits. alone the fixed octave range is a tremendous update. i am so happy that i have all the original mutabel ( except elements )in my system and i will keep them forever. i will categorize emilie gillet in the same league like bob moog, don bucla and dave smith of this era!!! ps: the best way to update : put frequency knob in the center and play the file through your headphone output with the maximum volume from your laptop, tabeltt or bitbox sampler if you own one!
When I purchase the Data Bender, Qu-Bit should give you a commission cuz it's gonna be solely based on watching your use of it. Sounds amazing the way you use it in subtle ways with Plaits etc
Great Video. I was hoping someone could help me. I've installed the update firmware 1.2 I could hear the new Oscillators but I can't seem to get my original oscillators no greens nor reds. I have access to a dark orange and light color orange. How to I access the new oscillators and the original one reds and greens. Thank you.
Hi there! I’ve never encountered this problem. On mine I changed it so that the right button moves up and the left moves down. If I press left on the first orange algorithm then it goes to the red bank, and pressing left moves down towards the green bank. Maybe try reinstalling the firmware?
How is fine tuning meant to work, on Plaits? If I turn the frequency knob (top left), nothing immediately happens, then it lurches too far in the direction I turned it. This has been described by some as hysteresis. Am I missing something? Is there another awkward shift combination to do to let the knob just behave like it would on an analog synth, for example? Is there a way to change it to a fine tune knob?
Evertime I've had to update via wav file to a module its taken three or more attempts. iTunes through my audio interface and tweaking the levels works. My dell pc straight out or win media player never works. No idea why. Such a shame that MI are no more.
Hi, Went to the MI website but the old version 1.1 is the only download available. Where is this version? I also looked on Github but couldn't find anything new. Thanks!!!
It does so much but nothing in it sounds like an afterthought.. I held off 'cos I already have Braids and a microfreak but I think this might change soon. I've long dreamt of a groovebox based on the Plaits/braids voice, but with the sequencing and modulation of the machinedrum. Some smart person should make that.
Ironic that my comment on this video was flagged and now YT is threatening to terminate my account and the name of this channel is The Unperson. Whoever flagged my comment is a spineless coward.

Totally agree! There's no other module that offers so much synthesis in such a small package - such fantastic design.

Thanks mate. The best description of the new Plaits update I've found anywhere..! 👍🙂
Can’t wait to chuck some sounds from my DX7 in it. Innt! Thanks for not having a boring 4/4 kick drum all the way through, much appreciated.
haha yea it's nice to venture away from 4 on the floor :)
the gift that keeps on giving!!!
Damn. Just in time for some fun over the holidays
I hadn't noticed the Red Means sunset key light in previous videos. You keep getting better in every dimension.
You've confused me with this one lol

I’m not aware of there being any button combo for fine tuning. I don’t recall having any troubles with tuning plaits tho!

wait, you used your phone? but how?
To play games while you wait for it to come out of the headphone jack of your audio interface, because that always works solid.
I just played the audio file and used the headphone jack into the module. Give it a shot if you're having difficulties with your interface!
Right? I thought my using Bitbox in the rack to update firmware was brilliant, til someone commented on my video "just use your phone" 😁
