WOW! Great video Mary. So much inf that translates for dyeing anything, not just the silk laps.

I learned a lot on how to dye hankies. I will try the ph factor next time.

    Great video, very informative.
Do you have a video on extracting silk from silk worm cacoons to make silk lap and to remove the threads from the cacoon.
I raised silk worms last year and have silk worm cacoons. My goal is to obtain treads for embroidering and silk to card and spin.
    Thank you, Peg McCaffrey

I tried a silk lap once that was made using a drum carder and I didn't like it. It was sort of chopped up. Silk with a short staple length spins up differently than natural silk. I've also spun hankies and silk top and much prefered those to the lap I used. I would like to try one of your silk laps sometime.

Ahh well the laps I have are pulled from hankies...not chopped up. There are different grades of laps. Seems you received a low grade.

The reason why the dye stock is more muted or pastel is because you’re adding way more water than pigment when you use liquid dye, especially if it’s only 1% stock solution. If you add a similar volume of pure pigment or a higher concentrated liquid, it’ll be more colorful

This was very informative! I like how you explained the difference between PH for wool and silk.dyeing. Do you have a video about using acid dye for plant fibers? Thank you!Bernadette

Thank you Saphira4Q. You would not use acid for plant dyes. Rather you would use a mordant such as copper, alum.

For plant fibers you’ll need a different pH, I think typically much lower than for animal fibers

Love your video!! Great info!! Could you please tell me where you got the pan and liner. I've checked several sites, but no luck. Also, what size pan. Thanks, Peg

Hi Peg, it's a countertop warming tray. Try webstaurant.com

I looked and looked. Found under "steam table pan perforated" or "perforated steam table pans" on different sites. Likely will have to purchase pan and strainer separately.
