After his struggles with addiction, I was afraid his son's death would spur a relapse he wouldn't survive. But Eric did what he always did, and turned his pain into great music.
Some of the best music ever recorded has come from pain and tragic life experiences... This one is probably the most tear jerking, gut wrenching ever... This is about his son Connor falling from his apartment in NY
This song was written seven years after my son passed he was 15 months old. Every time this comes on the radio I’m in tears by the end of the song. It’s said that he wouldn’t sing this song for a long time.
this song is so beautiful and so very sad. He said it was his therapy. A brave thing to do when u loose a child. but you can tell it is from his heart.
The song as everyone has said was a tribute to his son that died at age 4. The video playing while he was singing was a movie called Rush. It was about 2 cops that went undercover and got hooked on heroin. They lost their jobs but at some point she decides to get clean but she still loved him. And she found him overdosed and managed to revive him till she finds him dead in the park. The movie was sad but knowing the meaning of the song was even stronger.
This song is very heartbreaking, another one that hits me really hard is Craig Morgan. He has a song about his son who passed away, and he does a live version on the Grand Ole Opry. Brings me to tears watching him power thru it. 🤟
I really can't get through this song.....I lost my only sibling in July 2020, my younger brother. and I am the only one left of our immediately original family. I was not prepared for this alternate universe where half of my soul memory check system is gone. this song means so much to people who have lost someone close to them like this. I am a full orphan. in our society, a sibling death is the most ignored form of grief...until it happens to you. You sister or brother is your soul keeper, and when one dies they take their share of your soul with him. They don't mean to, but they just do.
This wasn't the only one written for Conor. Genesis wrote one for him as well, as Tony, Mike and Phil were all good friends of Eric's (Phil produced two of Eric's solo albums, toured with him twice and had him appear on a couple of his own solo songs). It was "Since I Lost You", the penultimate track from their 1992 album We Can't Dance. "Tears In Heaven" was also done for a foundation called "Save The Children" in response to the 2004 Tsunami in Indonesia. This had Rod Stewart, Elton John, Ozzy & Kelly Osbourne, P!nk and Steven Tyler among others. Phil is on there as well; you can see him appear alongside Gwen Stefani in the video.
I lost a son age 17 In 2005 Im still froze in time I lost half my heart and a part of my soul I mourn through music and I heal through hope prayers and knowing I will see him when I join him in heaven
Tears in Heaven" is a ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a window of the 53rd-floor New York apartment of his mother's friend, on March 20, 1991. A song that will touch the very depths of all who listen to it.🙏

3 years ago... not sure if you read back this far... I'm just two lines in, and paused to comment(I may edit in a bit to add more, but for now, I just want to let you know how powerful this song is, just from watching you face... the music started, and you kept your smile... first line in... your smile begins to fade... second line in... your smile is gone. It's a powerful song.. yes? OK... done... you're the first reactor whom, I think, hit the nail on the head... he was spiralling into the deepest depths, living and reliving life with his son, and realized he HAD to move on... send a song to his son, and carry on. hard enough to live through it.. can't imagine how hard to write and perform it. ALSO... thanks for catching yourself "I can imagine"... to "I can't imagine". TRUTH! (I see on my sidebar you have "Wonderful Tonight"... definitely a more pleasant message in that one.. gonna click it now.)👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦
So this was in my recommendations and I read the description... I was like, "oh, you poor thing." Get you a hug from somewhere because this one is gonna burn.
He’s known for his guitar work, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times(two groups, one solo). As he’s gotten older, he’s gravitated away from the driving rock of his youth to more blues-based music. It’s a good rabbit hole choice, if for nothing else to see the evolution of an artist over the decades he’s been performing. Not as necessarily something to react to, but after you’ve listened to some of his earlier music, I suggest setting aside a block of time for ‘Eric immersion’ and listening to the 24 Nights album(I prefer the audio-only version. Yes, the same album has two versions), which is a good mix of rock and blues. He does Old Love and Wonderful Tonight back-to-back... 20 minutes of mmm mmm musical goodness. If you continue with Eric, I’m sure you will get plenty of suggestions for those songs. I usually suggest live versions after hearing the studio. Then listen to the Unplugged album. Come join us in Clapton-land. We think you’ll like it.😁
I would never have had the strength to sing about my 4 year old like Eric does. I know how much he loved him. RIP Conor.

THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG HITS EVERYBODY'S HEART
After his struggles with addiction, I was afraid his son's death would spur a relapse he wouldn't survive. But Eric did what he always did, and turned his pain into great music.
Beyond the door
There’s peace, I’m sure
And I know there’ll be no more tears in heaven. That part always chokes me up. Rest in sunshine Conor🌈
Having lost a son also, this song has special meaning to me...and I'm sure Eric also...this was a way to help him heal
Every time I hear this song I am staggered by the courage it took to both write and sing it. So very sad.
Beautiful song about a lost child, means so much to me as I lost my son too, a broken heart is often eased by music.
Some of the best music ever recorded has come from pain and tragic life experiences... This one is probably the most tear jerking, gut wrenching ever... This is about his son Connor falling from his apartment in NY
Seasons in the sun...
Terry Jacks
Always brings back memories
This song brings tears to my eyes all the time. But I love listening to it. Beautiful song.
This song was written seven years after my son passed he was 15 months old. Every time this comes on the radio I’m in tears by the end of the song. It’s said that he wouldn’t sing this song for a long time.
One of the most heart wrenching songs ever written
this song is so beautiful and so very sad. He said it was his therapy. A brave thing to do when u loose a child. but you can tell it is from his heart.
That song breaks my heart whenever I hear it!! 💔💔 he fell out of the high rise window that was left open. 😭😭
I cry every time I hear this song since he first performed it in 1991.
As a father who had a son pass away at 7 months old this song gets me every time
This beautiful song has got lots of people through some tough times, thank you Eric❤️🙏
As a father i wish I could give everyone who lost a child a hug
I was just thinking the same thing. I just couldnt imagine losing either of my girls.
This song always makes me cry😪😪 Yes I can honestly say I feel his pain too.
Yea this is one of those songs where you can seriously hear the pain in his voice…such a touching song
I like the way you hurt.
You aren't afraid to share your personal pain.
Please keep being such a beautiful woman/person.🤗
A song that will touch the very depths of all who listen to it.🙏
Painful song.... good news I believe there is heaven and I believe Eric and whoever else will , can see their loved one's, one beautiful day.💜✝️
Lost my 6 year old daughter and wife to a drunk driver in 1999. This is only the second time I've been able to listen to this song. Still cried my heart out but sometimes a good cry is just what one needs.
One of the saddest songs ever written then performed to perfection by one the world's greatest musicians.
This is a beautiful song for his son. I could not imagine the pain if I lost my daughter.
I'm crying too sister.💙
Indeed there will be no more tears in Heaven. Wonderful reaction. Eric Clapton does mostly rock. Check out his song Layla when he was with Derek and the Dominoes.
Hos son fell 53 stories o remember the day very well. Im a huge Clapton fan.
Love the lights year round. A friend baby just passed. I came here
He’s known for his guitar work, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times(two groups, one solo).
We think you’ll like it.😁
Lights are beautiful!
