He had not seen his son in about a year so when he was 3.....he spent the day taking him to the circuis....the next day he was supposed to go to the zoo....he was so excited after seeing his father he kept running away from the nanny. They lived on the penthouse of a highrise and a worker was replacing broken glass on a floor to ceiling window. While the window pane was out the kid , running from his nanny excited to see his dad, ran straight out the open window and fell 53 stories to his death. His mom didn't blame anyone and said she knew the second she saw him go through that hole there was no way he would be OK. It was several years before they started over with their family. He wrote this to help cope with that event. His wife called frantically to Eric's hotel to tell him what happened. Every time he gets to that "Begging Please" lyric I can't help but think about how I would react in his situation and sobbing begging please no.....always shed a tear right there.

Eric Clapton is in a class by himself....songwriter, guitarist, collaborator. This song shows his raw emotions after such a tragedy. I still cry when I hear it.
I know this song for more than 25 years, but since 20 years it has a special meaning to me! This song was played at the funeral ceremony of a friend that commited suicide. He wrote in his farewell letter that he wants us to play it. Beautiful song! 💔
@Fab Weiss That’s awful. So very sorry for your loss. Sorry that your friend felt out of other options to stop whatever kind of pain he was going through. I hope that he found some kind of comfort in this song. I know that I do. BE SAFE. Peace...✌️💜
This is one of the most heart wrenching, beautiful songs ever written in my opinion. Clapton is always thought of as a great guitarist, which he is, but seldom recognized are his song writing abilities. A truly great artist.
This song breaks my heart and it always has. I always wondered how he could keep putting one foot in front of the other after losing his son and then I found out myself when I lost my 19 year old son in 2012. You move forward but you never forget, you never get over it and you just find reasons to keep walking. If I hadn't had my other (adult) kids to think of I wouldn't have made it at all. I appreciate Eric Clapton giving us a song from his own pain that gives words to what it feels like.
Truly a heartbreaking song. I cannot imagine how Eric Clapton was able to sing this without breaking down. My heart goes out to him. God bless his little son who was taken much too soon.
This song is about the death of Eric Clapton's 4 yr old son Conor. Very sad. Great reaction as always, thank you! Ps, sorry for the loss of your Grandmother, I can relate very well. 🙏
his feeling of guilt comes through so strong in the final lines. "I know I don't belong, her in heaven." but the whole song is asking his son if he could ever forgive him. my heart aches every time i hear this song.
Eric Clapton is someone you need to know. We call him Slowhand. One of the originals from the 60's hippie Era who lived to tell. He beat heroin. Survived alcoholism. After the death of his only child he did retire for a bit, but thankfully made a comeback. Eric was friends with Jimi Hendrix, B.B.King. Is friends with Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, to name a few. Has played in many bands. And he is still alive to this day. Eric Clapton is a treasure to the world.
Haven't heard this song in a few years. Sobbing almost all the way through. Look up why he wrote this song, it is heartbreaking and pulls at our own heartstrings from our own personal losses.
It's heartbreaking every time. Can any parent imagine how you would cope with such a tragedy? If you're Eric Clapton, you write a beautiful song about Tears in Heaven.
My sweet 2 year old baby girl died about 6-12 months after this became popular. I loved it because it became the song for a group you never want to belong to. It validated how broken I felt and it reminded me that I absolutely would see her again.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I also lost my 3 year old son due to a drunk driver. It's a horrible thing and I wish people will wake up to the danger of making to choice to drive when drinking. Prayers for you and your family 🙏
So sorry💔❤ I wish everyone had to read a book (before getting a drivers license) with all of these comments about people losing children to drunk drivers and then watch Eric Clapton sing this song.
My dad passed away in 2002, and the only song he wanted to be played at his funeral was this one. Mom met up with him there, and we will know his name when we join. Ty,super hugs from Sweden.
There are no words for me to say that could comfort any of you. Sharing my personal story of my own loss would only make it about me ,when it is about Eric his family, you and yours. The 1 thing I can say is that 4 me that when the pain gets 2 crushing I 🙏 and remember all the good times. I hope that helps someone
Dedicated and written about the loss of his very young son Connor. Another heartbreaking song is Led Zeppelins "All of My Love." It was written for Robert Plants son Karac who died at the tender age of 5. Both songs are emotional outcry from 2 fathers to their sons who died way before their time. You can clearly hear the pain and loss in both songs.
I used to compile music way back. I named them all sorts of titles and sell to my friends. This Eric Clapton was the No 1 song in my compilation, "Hits Vol. 8" they were recorded from cd to cassettes and my kid brothers (Yemi and Detola) reproduced in this gigantic cassette duplicator. I made the titles on my laptop using Pagemaker or CorelDraw. I loved every compilation of mine. It was a beautiful time of my life but really tedious work.
One of the most heartbreaking stories in the history of songwriting. When you learn the back story it takes an already great song to a spiritual level that is beyond belief. Peace.
As always when I hear this song my heart is breaking. Such a tragedy. Another beautiful song by Eric Clapton is “Wonderful tonight”. Beautiful love song.
This song came out in 1992 and the first time I heard it I cried, I was so touched because my own boys were both very young and I could never imagine losing either of them...♡
Love Eric Clapton! He has many great songs. I listened to Tears in Heaven often when it first came out. Not as much anymore, just too sad of a place to return - I remember how shocked and the devastation I felt for him when word first came out about his son. In my humble opinion, he’s one of the top guitarist of all time. He’s my favorite artist. His life, its many tragedies, his ability to somehow overcome, and give back, is astonishing. He’s owned up to his many mistakes, demons, flaws - but he marches forward. I don’t know where to start. You could react to ‘Old Love’ in the late ‘90s at Madison Square Garden. You could react to his live performance in 2004 (this is THE one) at a Crossroads Concert in Texas. Many consider his solo at this particular venue, the best, or at least one of the best, of all time. You could react to Double Trouble live performance in 2008 at Madison Square Garden with Steve Winwood. He’s truly amazing.
RIP to Connor. I believe Eric belongs in Heaven with Connor and will be. His music is Legendary, the world Loves some Clapton... This song still has me in tears after all these years. I remember when they announced on the radios about this tragedy, have never forgotten that. Kuddos to Eric for writing this, so beautiful.
As soon as I saw your reaction, I knew you were thinking of your grandma. These kind of heartstrings songs do that, get me crying over my loved ones everytime I hear them too.
Thank you for sharing your reaction to one of the most beautifully heartwrenching songs...it came out when i was about 13 or 14 and i remmeber hearing it thinking it was beautiful, then learning the tragic story behind, and then it took a whole other emotional meaning to me....you can feel his pain to the core in this masterpiece....your reaction is also beautiful
This song always makes me think of my dad. I miss him. When I see him again, I know there will be no more sadness and no more tears. Heaven is pure happiness.
No one should ever have to live through the death of their child. Eric, to cope with the grief after his son's tragic accident, wrote and sang this song. It's so incredibly touching.
I think the whole world cried for Eric & his family when the event's of the tragic death of his 4 year old was announced & we heard the song for the first time. I love this song & you can not hear this song and not think about his son or someone you have lost !!!
he lost his 4 year old son falling out of a 53 story window in NYC and this is his pain through music which we all know is whre the most beautiful creativity comes from ..sadly pain!
Sending you a virtual hug. Beautiful, touching song that holds so much meaning for so many people in their own situations. That's what makes songs like this live forever.
He came to the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium sat on a stool on the stage and played the song before it was released ..I cried ..we all knew it was for his little boy that died, Elvis used to stop in, all the greats sang here Hank, BB, Johnny Horton ...you name the person they performed on this stage...
Clapton has so much good stuff it’s hard to name! (Badge,Bad Love, I can’t stand it) could go on! Then there’s the blues he played with B.B. King and solo stuff too~
Eric Clapton is a GOAT. Go deeper in the catalog! Unthinkable trauma and grief created this song. Back in 1989 he came out on stage with Rolling Stones at Shea Stadium, amazing!!
LOVE Eric Clapton! Still cry when I hear this. Please don't deny yourself the pleasure of everything Eric has done in his career. It's a long full rich career that you've barely scratched the surface of. Treat yourself!
I think that's why that song is so powerful. We all have someone we miss and can think of when we hear this song. Lost in the beauty of the song is the technical brilliance of his guitar work.
@jeff lee Yes. I was just thinking of that song. Fantastic instrumentation. That one incredibly soulful guitar that follows and reinforces each chorus. Eric Clapton is great, no matter what his tempo. But my favorite songs of his have always been the ones that are slow and sad/happy/peaceful/sensual. BE SAFE. Peace...✌️
I cannot imagine losing a child like he did, and then being able to take your love, and your sadness, and your grief, and turn it into such an amazing piece of art.
@@brianfronius4166 yeah I have my favorites too, but it's subjective. I mean how do you determine such a statement? Is Eric Clapton better than Stevie Ray Vaughn? I think that once you get to that level the differences are in style...and what you like best about the style of that guitarist...drummer, etc
When I hear this song, when he sings that he doesn't belong in heaven, all I can think is that he blames himself for what happened. People blame themselves, even if they were not at fault.
I always took that lyric to say that his son is now in Heaven, but he has to carry on with life and can't be there because he still belongs on Earth. It's not his time yet.
Eric Clapton has been giving us great great music since the 1960’s. Inducted into the Hall of Fame three times. First with THE YARDBIRDS, then with CREAM and finally solo. And that’s just the tip of the Iceberg. He also was part of The Bluesbreakers, Delaney and Bonnie, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos. One of the true greats of Rock and Roll.
1 of the most beautiful songs ever written...it is so relatable in the way it says what's running thru your mind when you have to face the loss of someone. It is gut wrenchingly raw & honestly.

Eric Clapton is in a class by himself....songwriter, guitarist, collaborator. This song shows his raw emotions after such a tragedy. I still cry when I hear it.
When this came out, people were floored. It was heartbreaking thinking how losing his child must have been. Especially the way Connor passed.
BE SAFE. Peace...✌️💜
@@Rippypoo thanks bro
Everyone do lost someone in life do to suicide I know what that feel like. And do feel sorry for your lost of your friend.
I'm so sorry
@@jonathanpatrick2029 I know what that feels like too. My first husband committed suicide at 33
This is one of the most heart wrenching, beautiful songs ever written in my opinion. Clapton is always thought of as a great guitarist, which he is, but seldom recognized are his song writing abilities. A truly great artist.
The MTV unplugged video of that is so hard to watch. It’s amazing he made it through the song.
God bless you
Reminds me of my son Yes he’s there waiting for me
❤️
❤️❤️❤️
🙏🤍
I’m sure Eric looks to the day he can see his baby boy again, but until then, he’s carrying on the best he and God can -together. 🙏🏼 👍🏼
This is about his son Connor who died in an accident where are you fell out of a Out of a balcony/window
20+ years later, and I still cry when i listen to this song...ty for sharing this beautiful memory again.
Eric Clapton is a very talented musician. His guitar playing is legendary. This is a song of healing for him and it gets me every time.
Eric Clapton brings us with into his grief. his grief is so raw. This song has helped many.
This song brings tears to my eyes. You can feel the sincerity & the pain. Clapton is a legend...and rightfully so.
When a true blues man writes about real pain you get an amazing song from the depths of sorrow.
I lost my first son when he was 18 months old, killed by a drunk driver.
This song breaks my heart.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I also lost my 3 year old son due to a drunk driver. It's a horrible thing and I wish people will wake up to the danger of making to choice to drive when drinking. Prayers for you and your family 🙏
Thank you and I'm sorry for your loss as well. Prayers for you and your family 🙏
So sorry for your loss
@@scottallison2564 so sad sorry for your loss
When my oldest Nephew was murdered in '98 my Brother sang this. Not a dry eye in the house
we played it at my dad's memorial service.
How can you never had heard of any of these songs???
This was a number one hit for the longest time.
This song came out in 1992 and the first time I heard it I cried, I was so touched because my own boys were both very young and I could never imagine losing either of them...♡
30 years later, and I still cannot hear this song without crying.........😥
Rips my heart out every time.
That is the way i think everyone felt the first time they heard this beautiful song.
So emotional. Helps you remember those loved ones you have lost. To trigger these emotions thru song - what a talent.
One of the most heart wrenching songs you will ever hear. Such a tragedy.
As soon as I saw your reaction, I knew you were thinking of your grandma.
These kind of heartstrings songs do that, get me crying over my loved ones everytime I hear them too.
I sang this song and played to it at my A-Level exam in music back in 1995. one of the best and most emotional songs ever written.
It is a beautiful song about a horrible day
Listen to Clapton’s “Bell bottom blues”. That guitar wrecks your soul.
No one should ever have to live through the death of their child. Eric, to cope with the grief after his son's tragic accident, wrote and sang this song. It's so incredibly touching.
No parents should have to bury their child....it should be the other way around
I think the whole world cried for Eric & his family when the event's of the tragic death of his 4 year old was announced & we heard the song for the first time. I love this song & you can not hear this song and not think about his son or someone you have lost !!!
The background story is truly what makes this such a sad but beautiful song
The backstory to this song will absolutely break your heart
he lost his 4 year old son falling out of a 53 story window in NYC and this is his pain through music which we all know is whre the most beautiful creativity comes from ..sadly pain!
He wrote this when his 5 year old son died in a horrific accident❤😥
That song has to touch everyone. If it doesn’t then I don’t know what to say. You’re not human
James, I still cry when I hear this song. God bless you and your family; my sincere condolences for the loss of your dear grandma.
Clapton has so much good stuff it’s hard to name! (Badge,Bad Love, I can’t stand it) could go on! Then there’s the blues he played with
B.B. King and solo stuff too~
Such a heartbreaking, beautiful song, you can so feel his pain...Thanks James, Blessings
Eric Clapton is a GOAT. Go deeper in the catalog! Unthinkable trauma and grief created this song. Back in 1989 he came out on stage with Rolling Stones at Shea Stadium, amazing!!
I cry every time I hear this song. It's so beautiful but it reminds me of those I've lost.💖
Wonderful tonight
I don´t listen to other songs with Eric Clapton, but I do listen to this. And I cry every time.
YOU'RE MISSING A LOT. EC ROCKS
Thank you so much for respecting the music and letting it play uninterrupted.
Still tear up when I hear him sing this song. 😪
LOVE Eric Clapton! Still cry when I hear this. Please don't deny yourself the pleasure of everything Eric has done in his career. It's a long full rich career that you've barely scratched the surface of. Treat yourself!
My first wife passed away 12 years ago. We decided the first to go would light candles for the other. I look forward to the the day.
what an amazing day that will be
I think that's why that song is so powerful. We all have someone we miss and can think of when we hear this song. Lost in the beauty of the song is the technical brilliance of his guitar work.
Wonderful Tonight should be next
@jeff lee Yes. I was just thinking of that song. Fantastic instrumentation. That one incredibly soulful guitar that follows and reinforces each chorus. Eric Clapton is great, no matter what his tempo. But my favorite songs of his have always been the ones that are slow and sad/happy/peaceful/sensual.
BE SAFE. Peace...✌️
This is my favorite version.

That was a strong emotion song. I swear that I could feel your emotions as you listened to it.
Such a heartbreaking pretext for this song, but it's absolutely beautiful.
I have lost two children in my life and the pain is something you never recover from. I just plain hurts.
His poor 5 yr old Conor, died horribly as Eric was on his way to take him out. He saw the police and ambulances...oh God.
Actually, Conner was 4 when that happened
😥😥😥😥😥😥
@@karlsmith2570 Seriously, if you really want to be technical 4 yrs 7 mos. Does it really matter?
That is sad.
I cannot imagine losing a child like he did, and then being able to take your love, and your sadness, and your grief, and turn it into such an amazing piece of art.
You should Also Know That Eric Clapton Is Considered To Be The Second Greatest Guitarist Of all Time
Really difficult to rate guitarists. It's just subjective and who you like best...second...third, etc.
@@reality1958 , yeah, that’s a little ballsy to say isn’t it
@@brianfronius4166 yeah I have my favorites too, but it's subjective. I mean how do you determine such a statement?
Is Eric Clapton better than Stevie Ray Vaughn?
I think that once you get to that level the differences are in style...and what you like best about the style of that guitarist...drummer, etc
@The - I have to ask, not to be confrontational, considered by whom?
#1 being SRV
One of the saddest songs ever written yet it's absolutely beautiful at the same time
You have a good heart. You are also valuable and important. We love you.
Great song. Reminds me when we lost 4 month old grandson. Will cry every time.
@@johnjr757 Both reasons fit I think.
This still makes me tear up, so tragic and beautiful. You can really feel his heartbreak 😢💔
1 of the most beautiful songs ever written...it is so relatable in the way it says what's running thru your mind when you have to face the loss of someone. It is gut wrenchingly raw & honestly.
A parents worst nightmare .
It is incomprehensible to imagine the pain.😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
