Florida Babysitter Allegedly Left Baby Girl to Die in 133-Degree Car

- Ten-month-old Ariya Paige died in July 2023 after deputies in Baker County, Florida said her babysitter left her in a hot car for nearly five hours. Rhonda Jewell was charged with one count of aggravated manslaughter of a child and her trial was scheduled to begin next week. But prosecutors have filed two additional felony charges against Jewell. Law&Crime's Angenette Levy talks with Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg about the new charges in this episode of Crime Fix - a daily show covering the biggest stories in crime.

Yeah, I was always too paranoid to allow anyone to watch my children when they were infants. I waited until my children could talk before someone watched them. I know that’s not an option for everyone.
The fact she was driving around town and to other babysitting jobs would be a huge problem for me! MAYBE, if my child was older and I had known the nanny for a very very long time. I'm sure the parents were just trying to do the best they could and with childcare so damn expensive they may have felt that lady was their only option, my heart breaks for them
Yes that's true but its really a shame that grown adults cant be trusted with the common sense to keep a child safe when that is what they are paid to do !!

She was definitely high on something hence why she declined being tested for substances; hopefully law enforcement did it anyway in this case where she was responsible for the death of a baby.
In Florida if a death occurs because of you, they will test for everything.

How do people leave children in a hot freakin car "by mistake"? That is no mistake! Anytime I get in a car that's been sitting in the hot sun, I think of all the poor babies/kids that are supposed to be cared for by these bottom of the barrel individuals. Throw away the key.

Because, unfortunately, most parents don’t want to be/never wanted to be parents. They only care about themselves. Period.

So I might understand being overwhelmed and possibly not realizing you didn't bring a child in. But I don't understand how a person could not miss a child for hours and hours. That means she hadn't thought about changing or feeding or anything at all concerning the baby. And that is the part I can't get past

Someone needs to invent a car seat that has an alarm when the car doors open or when keys are removed.
They do have a device like this. I have also seen people tie things around the wrist to remember.
Most modern cars have some sort of reminder system to hopefully keep people from forgetting babies
My car tells me to check the back seat whenever I get out.

Yep and she still walks around free in our town doing whatever she wants to do. I see her sometimes and just seeing her makes me sick. This family deserves justice and I pray that day will come soon.
As someone with multiple stress and anxiety disorders I'm so glad I never had kids. I cannot imagine ever being able to let them out of my sight.

She refused a blood test for substances!!??? 🤨 I've never forgotten any child in my vehicle. But I would think a person would be even more mindful of someone else's child. Im always more careful with other people's children. Such a beautiful little baby 💔 heartbreaking.

What is the status of the Tracey Nix case, the grandmother whose inattention resulted in the deaths of two of her grandchildren? She let her grandson get away from her and he drowned in a pond, then she left her granddaughter in a hot car on Florida.

Her daughter, mother of the babies, testified against her. She was convicted, but I don't remember her sentence. I'm sure there's lots online about it.

The case was mystifying. Many speculate the grandmother could have suffered from some form of dementia.
I’ll have to look this up. I live in Florida and I don’t remember this. I can’t imagine what that poor mother goes through every day without not one, but two, of her babies, and by the hand of her own mother 😢

Tragic case, but you don’t need laws to tell adults about the dangers of leaving a child in the car. It would be beneficial to have some kind of technological solution, and for it to be available free for low income families and mandatory for everyone else.
I agree. This is the fault of car manufacturers at this point. I refuse to believe e there is no technological solution for this. This will never end bc people will never stop being people. TIL then, we will just debate about how much jail time is appropriate for whoever the guilty party is.

As a parent I have to say I don’t know how I would cope if I had a baby pass away like this. There’s nothing to prepare a person for this, it’s not like if your child was extremely sick and hospitalized and you were aware they may pass.

I live in freaking Alaska, and I’ve never heard of a child dying from being left in a car in the cold. And we see -20F *regularly*
Edit: I should add I’ve never even heard of one being hospitalized for hypothermia for that. And that would absolutely happen, even with winter clothes on, after a lengthy period, hypothermia would set in.
I wonder why they couldn't push through a warrant to compel her to provide blood work.
There is literally no excuse for this. None. Life without parole. She should not be free on bail.
The frequency that new stories like this and so many more awful cases against children shows how barbaric humanity still is. We just have more tools and resources than ever before to commit atrocities and we must do better to establish a strong children's federal bill of rights and completely reassess the child protection programs and the relationship with each court system.

A woman here in Canada, ontario small town i believe, a teacher, had done the same thing. A teacher in an elementary school left her infant in her car while she taught school alll day. child died and she was never even charged, she got to go home to her other child about 9 or 10. the whole town rallied around her with sympathy....

This broke my heart. I can't imagine losing my baby in this manner. This is one of the reasons why I wouldn't hire a babysitter or put my baby in daycare. You may never know what will happen when you leave your children with other people.

Or even when you get out of the car, it is so unlikely that you won't get at least a glimpse of the backseat and see a carseat. Totally on purpose

As a mother/grandmother I cannot understand how you leave a child in a car. Even when they were asleep in their car seat I always glanced back in the rear view mirror to make sure they were okay. Just blows my mind. How do you forget a baby? My deepest sympathies for the family.
I had 3 children and never forgot any of them in my car , I also did a ton of babysitting and not one child was ever forgotten! How do you ' forget ' a child you specifically picked up to babysit! I don't buy the excuses!

Prayers to this family, what a precious child who didn't deserve what happened to her ...bless her parents I can't imagine the sadness they feel daily..as far as the doctor saying educated people leave children in hot cars or caregivers leaveing children in hot cars its not normal . As a care giver myself and a mom of two i never ever left my children or anyone elses children that i babysat or cared for ever ... Its sensless and careless and if your a parent or caregiver your main concern is that child or children never anything else im sorry this caregiver of this precious child should spend the rest of her life in jail no excuses at all ..
