After testing all the compact suv ICE vehicles, I took a spin in an ID.4. That experience led me to order one the following day. The car has been wonderful, with only a couple of little niggles related to interior lighting algorithms. That should be corrected in future software updates. The car is smooth, quiet, roomy, handles beutifully, and is very well constructed. Rather than spending $160 per month on gasoline, the ID.4 has used less than $20 per month in charging costs on a Level 2 garage charging station. No more oil changes, etc., etc., etc. For the naysayers out there . . . if you want a car with a 'Frunk', buy a car with a 'Frunk', and stop complaining!

More electric vehicles need to look and operate like this, a normal vehicle that happens to be electric rather than a gadgetified tupperware container. I think they would have been more popular years ago if the manufacturers had went with that strategy. They spend so much money on the marketing and styling and then throw that out to make the thing look unique for the sake of being different. They already did the design work just focus on the little stuff like the dial shifter frees up console space. This is a good effort from Volkswagen.

The Model Y is 76k now... this is 53k after the rebate. And Tesla is still having build quality issues. If you want more luxury go buy a Q4 progressiv for 65k, 11k less than the Model Y. I called several VW Ontario dealerships and they said if I order now it might take 12 months to get an ID4. Anyways, thanks for the great review.

I’ve seen a few of your reviews now, and I really enjoy them. Thanks sharing the info! I’m in the US and I wish we could get a heat pump, but luckily I live in the southwest and it won’t be that big of a deal for me. I also find it funny that everybody complains about it not having a frunk. People don’t seem to get that VW would have had to take away from interior space and make the hood longer in order to have a frunk, or they would have had to make it a bigger vehicle all the way around, which would have pushed the price up. I think they made a good choice with what they did here.

  • @stephenhendricks103

Really fine review as usual, folks. I think VW has hit the bullseye on the target they set for themselves -- an EV that drives like a conventional dinosaur juice drinker. More than sufficient power in the AWD model for the vast majority of drivers. Aimed squarely at the most popular SUV size segment. A price point that even without a tax rebate won't cause most consumers willing to purchase a new vehicle to run screaming from a VW showroom. And importantly, looks that aren't reminiscent of a spaceship from a 1930's Flash Gordon movie serial.
Personally, I find the looks of the forthcoming KIA EV6 and the Hyundai Ioniq5 appealing but I think VW is right that a more conventional looking SUV appeals to a wider range of consumers. After all, despite the hype associated with EVs, the 2% "take rate" is about the same as the vanishingly small minivan market in the US. There is a huge potential market among folks who would feel comfortable in a "stealth" EV, just as so many have moved to "stealth" hybrids. And while the neck snapping acceleration of high performance EVs will excite internet fanboys, the price for that performance means only a tiny minority will ever sign up such vehicles (or have the credit rating to qualify to do so.)
Range anxiety and the absence of a home charging option for many will continue to constrain the EV market for a while. But here in the US the recent infrastructure bill passed by Congress will pump about $7.5 billion into expanding the network to half a million recharging stations. And a substantial segment of consumers will opt for an EV as a "second" vehicle and discover that their "first" vehicle is actually not used nearly as much as they had anticipated.
With a kid shortly off to college and a shortage of supply I'm resisting the temptation to purchase a new car at the moment. But I suspect that in a year or two, the next inhabitant of the garage will need a level two electric power source.

Hello guys! Thanks for the great review! One thing I would like you to bring into the conversation is a 'range anxiety' with respect to Canadian distances, extreme terrane and adverse weather conditions in many parts of the country. I was one of many hundreds stranded near Hope when it was cut out by the mudslides in November. When all these cars poored into the town after nights of idling, they all went to gas stations, and it took an hour in the line to fill up. Imagine, 10 years from now with most electric cars on the road, they got stranded in Hope, or in the middle of the Coquihalla, or 97C connector, or Sea-to-Sky - in winter, and have to run their heaters to stay warm. How would you charge them up or evacuate, how would you keep the passengers warm? Can you risk driving an EV from Vancouver to Kelowna in winter, after learning what may happen, also considering, that the range reduces in cold weather? When I was choosing between model Y and RAV4 Prime, and was thinking about this again when idling at night in Hope, I was glad I went for the Prime. Yet, I can do many kms in the EV mode in the city. Would these recent events suggest that in our climate and terrain pure EVs are mostly practical in high density urban areas? Perhaps, it is reasonable to say in the reviews that potential buyers need to review their driving needs and habits more critically before making the final decision?

It's undoubtably a decent vehicle, however still quite a bit out of my price range. I want to go electric mostly because gas prices are getting ridiculous and I'm trying to save as much money as I can by investing in efficiency wherever I can. What I would love to see is a smaller "bare bones" electric car with at least 200km range below $20000. Something for a middle aged bachelor like me that doesn't need such a big vehicle with all the bells and whistles. I'm thinking of a two door hatchback like the Fiat 500E would fit the bill for some inexpensive basic transportation. As long as it has a cooling/heating system that keeps the battery healthy for many years and capable of highway speeds is what is important to me. Also, I use a wheelchair. So 2 door models, which usually have larger doors are a lot easier for me to put my wheelchair in the backseat.

I have one question on the ID4 that If you are a Fiat 500c driver you definitely have come across it. Can you allow fresh air into the car without turning on the heating or ac or climate control? I have to turn on the climate heating or fan which uses up the driving range.
    Thanks

Your point about the the power that these new ev's are being given does worry me a bit. When the younger generation start getting their hands on cars that will do 0-60 in 3-5 seconds i fear that speeding tickets might be the least of our worries. That applies to a lot of people that would consider themselves as good drivers too.

In my Tesla against hopped up BMW and Porsche, I can generally get across the intersection before they’ve gone two car lengths. I slow down to the speed limit a quarter block ahead and let them speed if they want but I can be quick without going fast. Feels good every time I blow away these expensive gas mobiles.

Scott, a heat pump is like an air conditioner that can be flipped over to heat, as well as cool. The big advantage is efficiency. The heat pump will use 1/4 to 1/3 of the electricity that resistive heaters would use. So this is a big deal in Canadian winter.

Well after buying Land Rovers for my wife for the last 20 years, we have decided her next vehicle will be an electric SUV. We are not ready to dive in just yet as we think the market is going to evolve for the next few years and some standardization will become pronounced. Other than the charging plugs that is.
What I don't like about most of the EV market is the lack of dedicated controls. I have seen the same thing happen in aircraft once glass panels came out. After folks got over the touch screen idea, the development of remote dedicated knobs for various things like auto pilot emerged. I hope this will become the case for EV's as many folks don't want to navigate screens to turn the seat warmers on or off or touch a screen multiple times to change the fan speed.

    • @stephenhendricks103

All automakers, especially in the mainstream categories, have to "hit a price point." In the US the ID4 AWD comes in at or below the average price of a new car (assuming a $7500 tax break.) It's a brilliant configuration.
