This is a very important lesson to learn. I collect sewn bound books before I discovered comics. :D I'm a newbie. Nothing I scream louder at is people reviewing Omni's and start with a freshly opened book and start on page one. I can almost feel the stress on the spine!

From personal experience with other books, that damage was caused due to the perfect binding of the book (the glued binding) and most likely storing the book with the spine face up. As a result the spine collapsed, which caused both of the terrible folds in it which you can see at the end of the video. Also note how the outside of the spine imploded and the outer covers are bowed, this sort of damage points to the book being stored with the spine facing up and gravity pulling it down. The damage isn’t from reading, rather it is from improperly storing the book.

One of my local bookstores was selling the BEFORE WATCHMEN omnibus for $75 and its spine was completely messed up. The binding seemed to have been torn off about half way. It’s a complete rip off that they were selling it at that price in the condition it was in. And that’s something I see all the time with bookstores and online. They’ll have an omnibus in absolute garbage condition but then still somehow expect retail price. Insane!! More people should watch this video.

From what I've been reading, this helps but can't save the DC omnibuses because their bindings are terrible these days. You can read it all over: Flash, Green Lantern, Batman. Seems to be the ones printed coming out of Canada. I just started buying omnibuses, but I might go back to trade paperbacks because they seem less likely to break.

Just started collecting omnibuses in the past year, and this was an extremely helpful video for me. How do you recommend storing the huge books? I have read storing them vertically, as you do, can cause problems with the spine of the book, as the text block is being pulled down, since it isn't level with the book shelf. Have you seen any problems in your omnibuses from this? Thanks for all of the great content, love your channel.

Did not stretch the spine of my Berserk Deluxe Edition 1 book. My first ever manga, by the way. I instinctively knew that there has to be a proper way to open a hardcover book. So I searched online and found out that you are supposed to slowly break in the book. Hardcover books are like a machine and need to be gently lubricated. Gotta stretch that spine. Glad that nothing happened to my book and it is still in Mint condition. Broke in Deluxe Edition 2 and 3 though :). Practice makes perfect.

The way to take care of a book is to not open the book 180° or more. Hold the book in such a way to allow it only to open like 150° or so. Or cross your left leg and prop the front part of book against the thigh and hold it down with your fingers. Books get damaged because they get opened too far or because they get squished. If you have a hard spine crease in a paperback book make more light creases to the spine throughout the book here and there by opening it far and applying some pressure. Then it will be easy to flip through and not pull towards one bad part of the spine while reading.
