@@FrankWinchester I don't read e-books for 2 reasons. First, it seems wrong that the most basic of pleasures enjoyed for thousands of years shouldn't require electricity as a sign of progress. Second, with wokeness causing some publishers to censor some books and in some cases actually rewrite hundred-year-old books not to offend modern readers, I don't want my library subject to 1984-like changes in reality. Part of my reading experience with Asimov sci-fi is seeing the future through the eyes of a 1950's man and what he sees as the norms of a reader in that time.

For me the biggest thing that makes hardbacks attractive in terms of readability is that they actually stay open because the hard covers weigh down the pages. With a paperback, especially those tiny "mass market" ones, you can't easily just plop it down open on a table because it's not going to want to stay that way. Idk I guess some people don't care about this but it's a major factor for me.

For me the paperbacks is for comfort, and hardcovers is for aesthetic. I first purchased the books in paperbacks, read them, decide if I like them enough to reread them in the future, and if I do, I'd try to collect the hardcover to display on my bookshelves. If not, then I'm gonna stick with the paperback. Contrary for peoples beliefs, paperback still can last long if you treat it right. For me, i always try to put plastic covers to my newly-purchased paperbacks. So the covers will not soak all that sweats from our destructive hands and make it last longer.

I'm surprised nobody has talked about the difference in actual word size which is the deciding factor for me when choosing between the two. I always go paperback unless the words are too small for my preference. (Which happens a lot) Maybe I'm just horrible with distractions but if my brain doesn't get the small "wins" of advancing to the next page fast enough I just get discouraged and usually don't end up finishing the book at all lol. That's why I love Kindle reading so much. You can change the size to be the same for every book.

My grandad had a massive book collection that he kept displayed in his office. It was one wall of books, but you could clearly tell that some of them had been there for 50+years. The bumped edges and bent spines tell people that you have the books because you like reading books, not because they look aesthetic on the shelf. My grandad had books that were covered in tea stains and little scraps of paper that he used as marks. It's nice to be able to look through these worn books and be reminded of him.

Also, I buy my books secondhand at a local pre-owned bookstore or thrift store, or receive some for free from loved ones or acquaintances or from out local "little library" boxes, so in those cases you get what you get, and it doesn't bother me either way.

I know this video is a bit aged, but I'd like to share my experiences. I've never been a new book buyer, so no book I've ever owned has been very displayable. I am also terrible at taking care of my things, drinks get spilled, food crumbs, lots of dropping things, I am a torment on the things I own. Of my many books, only two that I can recall have ever become "ruined" one was a paperback, a spill of a dark staining liquid soaked through the edges of the pages and obscured 10% of the text, a hardcover that was underneath it had it's cover quite tarnished, but no damage to the pages. Another was a spill of a sticky liquid which bound together all the pages who would tear when attempting to separate them.
I have had a few go through hell and back, I once got a copy of The Mosquito Coast from my school as they were no longer using it as required reading, tho it had been gone through many times by elementary school kids over the years, it's paperback had been opened and shut so many times that the spine just fell apart and it turned into a loose stack of papers, I got it kinda mended with some clever tape use, but I still doubt you could read through it more than once before it started falling apart again. On the hardback side my most worn out book is a over 100 year old copy of Story of One Hundred Years, it has separated from the hardback on one side, and it's got very loose grips on a lot of it's pages, tho the cover has held together well enough to essentially act as a folder for the pages, so even when one becomes loose it's still contained, inconvenient in wind, but still quite readable.
Tho I would say the main reason I go for hardbacks most of the time, is that when I find while reading a book that I feel someone I know would enjoy more than me, it makes it a much more special gift. The price of a hardback vs a paper back used is usually a dollar, which isn't bad for a potential gift.

Quick note: thriftbooks is a great way to buy cheap books so you can buy a hardback more often. I’ve gotten all the hardbacks I personally own on there. I may just be a little less picky about scuffs.

@@frecasfam I don't know if your still interested, im a different person but also dyslexic, my prefered style of reading is definitely with a physical copy accompanied by an audiobook (i often get distracted whilst reading an Ebook). But the problem is audiobooks are uber-expensive were with an audiobook i read one book a week without an audiobook it would usualy taken 2 - 3 weeks to read a book. There are websites where you can get large libraries of audiobooks for free (these are great) but if you read a book that has been translated they only have one translation of the book (not necessarily the translation of the book you want to read). With Audible I would paying through the nose for one weeks worth of entertainment per month (for me it makes more sense just to take the extra time to read the book). however this is all just my opinion from my situation. Whilst not being poor i can only really afford one copy of a book (often second hand) and its odd with an audiobook i can afford to read a book for one week and two weeks without anything to read, without an audiobook I could only read one book but can afford to buy a book for each week.

Paperback: if it's a book/series that I have never heard if(am blind buying), the HC are out of print or expensive, or I just dont carry for it to much.
Mass Paperback: which I have always hated and refused to buy but now buy if the series is old and only in that format, or to long and thus expensive to buy in any other edition (The Horus Heresy, Malazan Book of the fallen).

I buy the clear dust jacket covers that libraries use from Brodart, a libary supply company, and I cover ALL of my hardcover jackets with them. Without those covers, even gentle use will cause some dents, tears, creases from handling. But the protective covers keep them pristine, and I will never go back. I do also always take off the dust jacket when I'm reading a hardback.

Okay look, I’m a sucker for hard covers, the majority of my collection is hard cover. I don’t have the issues you have with reading a hard cover book. As for the dust jacket, I remove it when I’m reading the book, when I’m done, I slip it back on and it goes back in its place. I actually find paperbacks to be uncomfortable to read. You have to break the spine in some cases to read the book comfortably. That’s something I haven’t had to do with my hard covers.
You almost had me sold on paperbacks though until I remembered, I live in Southwest Texas, we don’t have hurricanes, lol. I also don’t “abuse” my books. I’m more gentle with my books than I am with myself. 😂

In the case of comfort, I would prefer hard covers over than paper back.
I feel guilty for destroying perfectly good books. A couple Christmases ago, my brother bought me the first Mistborn trilogy for $30, those small American copies. I read the entire first book, but felt guilty about it because I had it on my person all the time.
It was either in my sweaty hands or tucked inside my arm while I'm walking. This lead to the papers getting a yellow taint from my sweat, and the front cover just ripped off, and I had to tape it back together.
Since it was a gift from my brother, I couldn't stand it being damaged.
Another thing that I don't like is that I feel like opening a paper back is ruining the spine. I don't feel this whenever I open a hard cover.
And hard covers mostly have covers. As I said before, I don't like damaging my books, so I always take off a book's cover when I'm reading a book. If the hard cover gets damaged, I can just finish the story and then put the cover back on once I'm done.
And about comfort with holding the book while walking. I'm double jointed in thr thumbs, so it has never been an issue for me to keep books open with one hand. I can just extend my thumb past what a regular person could. Yes, it does get a bit tiring, but I do have two hands, and I'm never standing up long enough for both of my hands to get tired.
All in all, hard covers are the apple of my eye.

Ah yes, we all hear those warnings about hurricanes on the news - that a hurricane throws you around, slams you down into the ground, and then begins stabbing you repeatedly. Classic hurricane threat.😂

To be fair. There have been drinking straws found stabbed into tree trunks after hurricanes. Though i thought a front loading washing machine would have been a better way to test it.

Paperbacks are friendly. Hardcovers look down their noses at you. The way I see it, if you *collect* books, hardcovers are for you; if you *adopt* books, it’s paperbacks all the way.

To me, paperbacks seem very unfriendly because they don't seem to want to be read. Paperbacks fight to close ALL the time. It's a struggle to hold them open if you read for longer than 20 minutes. Just take the jacket off a hardcover, and it stays open SO much better.

One good thing (in my preference) about hardbacks is that if it is a bigger book like the hardback version of Rhythm of War, you can just open it and leave it open and don't have to hold it.

The lesson I learned from this video is that if youre attacked in a library with a knife, pick up a hardback to defend yourself.
