- Опубліковано 13 лип 2024
- In this video I'll show you how to make a Gandalf the Grey hat, you can use this pattern to make any witch or wizard hat.
I am putting all the information about the pattern pieces and what you fabric you need here, in order to keep the video at an acceptable length.
To measure the radius of a circle: Circumference divided by Pi= diameter,
Diameter divided by 2 = radius
MATERIAL:
( How much fabric you'll need, will depend on the size of your hat)
- Medium to heavy woolly type fabric
- lining fabric
- heavy fuse or fusing
- pillow stuffing
Pattern Pieces, cut:
-outer layer = 1 cone piece
2 brim pieces
-lining layer = 1cone piece
-heavy fuse= 2 brim pieces
1 cone piece (will be attached to the outer layer)

great! thank you!!
+Eti Grifel No worries =D
Hi, thank you for the tutorial, i will definetly try this :) What did you use as lining fabric ?
One thing that would work as an upgrade to the design is to take a wire and make a loop around the exterior of the brim, just making sure to close up the meeting point for the wire and you get a brim that can be adjusted as you want it to. You could also use one rather than stitching inside the cone to create the bend and make it possible to change as you want there
😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏🌹wonderfull!!!
Great Job
cool i might use this for a vivi hat
Slowed the speed down on this video to help me understand the words. That helped a little.
I’m in search of good videos on a complete Gandalf costume and here I find your video about the hat . Ten years later . Impressive. I’m sure your studying is over by now. Did you go back to sewing and crafting ?
Great tutorial, thanks! But to find the radius of a circumference you need to divide it by 2π, if you just divide by 4 (or twice by 2 as per your instructions) you are going to get a REALLY big circle, more than you can overlap to get the brim right.
+Ana Sancho Rumeu Ah ah it s a typo, just replace the first 2 by Pi
Awesome video!!! do you know where i can get the Medium to heavy woolly type fabric as none of my fabric shops in the area stock anything like it
Thanks Video!!! :)
Thanks =D
Wow this video was so cool it be so awesome if you made me a witch hat :3
❤️
Thanks for the video! What is heavy fuse?
Hi. Absolutely awesome tutorial; merci beaucoup! I have made a wizard hat for my husband.. 😀 If I can figure out how to show a picture, I will!
+Desadora1 hi, i am glad I can help you can tag me on instagram if you have one 😸
This is awesome! I just wish I knew how to sow...
Thanks, it s never too late to learn =D
Thank you for a great, very clear tutorial! This will be very helpful for the Gandalf the Gray costume I'm making for my son. Question: How do you keep the stuffing up in the tip? Do you do anything to secure it?
+Kelly Williams Thanks =D I didn't secure mine, once the hat is on my head everything kind of staying in place =D
How many yards of fabric did you use? Also what did you use for lining?
Nice video, very instructive. :)
I'm trying to make a hat like this but I'm having some problems with the brim. What was that white material you sewed in between the layers so it won't go all floppy?
It's called heavy fusing. You can iron it onto fabric and it will 'fuse' to it, stiffining it right up!
What if you wanna put a ribbon all around at the brim of the hat? I want my hat to have yellow all around the brim of the hat, but do I stitch it in last?
Your accents so pretty 😭
hahaha for me Megumin cosplay 💚💚💚💚👍
Just wondering what material you are using? I tried acrylic felt but it melted when I tried to iron out the seams.
when you make the cone for the top of the hat on paper, you said to measure the circle and then divide by two to know where to stop, but what exactly are you measure? circumference of circle or like diameter? sorry i just don't want to mess up :-)
got my material, but forgot the fusing!. I have never sewn a hat before but I am making a hat for a Vivi ff9 cosplay for my bf. I really like this tutorial will let ul how it goes
Thanks =D
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Quick question, how many yards of fabric did you buy for this project? Or more specifically, how do you determine how much you're going to need. I'm not an avid seamstress, but your tutorial is so clear I think I'll be able to make the hat, I'm just having trouble with the supply shopping.
I had quite a wide fabric. i think i used 1.5m. how much you need will depend on the width of your fabric =D
Are you using felt for this? Or what kind of fabric? Thanks!
Very nice tutorial ! I have one question : If you wear it in the rain will it get super heavy and change form? If yes is there a way to prevent that?
Yeah it is not waterproof, you could try waterproofing spray for shoes or coats, or you could apply some PVa glue on the hat, it might leave some stains and it would make it more rigid =D
I love you
Hello. Great video and very nice work! I'm struggling to get my hat finished today, but I have a problem. I understood the pattern instructions fine, but when I try to pin the brim to the cone before sewing, the problems begin. It is very hard to work with the two fused pieces, but I get the idea. Unfortunately, no matter how carefully I go, but the time I get it pinned all the way around, I run out of cone fabric and I have extra brim left. I just loose too much of the cone due to tiny gathers going around the curve. So my only option would be to cut off the excess brim (making the hat too small) or cut a new cone with a much larger measurement. Most likely this is a flaw in my technique, but I can't get the two pieces to line up as nicely has you have in your video (could have used shot of the actual sewing as well, since that is challenging on this piece). Thanks!
Sean Kelly Hi, first I would check that the inner brim and the curve on the cone match, then if it does, you can stretch the two pieces to fit each other and make sure you use a lot of pins. These two pieces are not easy to match up =D Let me know if you have any other problem with it and I would love to see a picture =D
Sean Kelly how'd the hat turn out?
Eu gostaria se entender oq você diz ;-;
Amei :3 ficou perfeito
yr very good especailally the templates
+Mr Explosion Thanks you very much =D
What I would like is an authentic Gandalf Lord Of The Ring costume.
Absolutely love this hat:D question though, can you use 100% cotton fabric if that's what you'd rather? I have a robe that i would like it to match:)
Nathan Wannamaker Thanks, yep you can use watever you like, just make sure you re stiffen it well and you re good to go. That s the beauty about making your own stuff, FREEDOM!!!!!!! =D
CraftGyver Thanks so much:) have a great weekend!
This was so long ago not sure you’re replying to comments. Hope you do. I’m trying to make a pattern now and I wanted to ask a question. When it comes to the head hole in the brim, do I need to add seam allowance for when it comes to sewing the cone to it? I’m finding that my pattern seems the right size when I’m making it and sit it on my head without the cone, but then when adding the cone it makes the head hole larger. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
Your cone seems to much wider than mine and I can’t figure it out haha. The inside measurement of the my hole and the cone bottom is 22” would you happen to recall what yours was so I could just compare? My cone just looks super skinny it’s killing me!
The base of you cone should match the size of the inside of your brim. For the brim it was 5” wide including seam allowance.
Hi, how much would you ask for a hat like this?
2016 Gandalf still Rulez! Hope you've got a little better microphone, and have kept making tutorials similar to this. You seem to have a knack for it.
+Kyle Cooltron I agree he still rulez =D I am slowly investing in better equipment, thanks for watching =D
Hello, I'm planning on making this hat and I was wondering what the white foam-like paper you used in the video is. Also, I bought grey felt and was wondering how to make that stiffer. Please and thank you.
+SupCashie It s a very stiff/ thick interlining, if you ask in a fabric shop they should be able to help you =D As to make the stiffer you can use pva glue, I hope that helps =D
Oh, I went ahead making it with my big sheet of felt and apparently it worked itself out cuz the felt was quite stiff when stacked in 2. Thank you for replying though. Your video itself was a big help.
What is this paper that she used?
On the cone part the instructions are not clear, when you say measure across for the cone? Do you mean the whole circle or do you mean half. Ive cut my fabric and it has come up short due to this, though i followed your instructions as clear as possible
You need to measure the inner section and divide it by 2, as you’re making pattern and cut your fabric on the fold to get a symmetrical shape. I would suggest making a mock in a cheap fabric for the fitting before you cut your good fabric.
