It only took....I don't know, 15 hours to finish but my hat is finally done and it looks amazing. Lesson learned, if you decide to try this the first time and you want to make the hat out of heavier velvet fabric it's going to be a huge pain and because of the nap on the velvet, keeping the pieces lined up is very frustrating! I aimed for a 7 inch brim and a wider crown than I needed and I ended up with a 6 inch brim and a tight fit after all was said and done, lol. For the stiffening material I did try same lining but it ended up shrinking my fabric a bit and the brim halves no longer matched so I took it off and replaced it with some of the stiffest lining I could find and doubled that up; came out great for the heavier fabric. Next time I make one of these, I'm going to opt for an easier fabric to save my sanity. 😬
Just did this project for my son's Halloween costume. It took about 5 hours. Instead of stuffing it, I lined the cone with cotton to make my fabric stiffer. I'm very happy this it.
One night... I completed this hat in one night... and it looks great! Finished it in like 3 hours. I didn't have that cool stiff fabric so we just used taped together construction paper and it works perfectly fine. So excited to wear it tomorrow! Thank you for the video!
Thanks for making it look so easy. I needed to make a hat in a hurry for a dress up party, so I took a shortcut and just added the cone to a brimmed hat. But your instructions gave me the confidence to do it!
Love the hat and the tutorial. You did a great job explaining each step and didn't go to fast or too slow. I know I can follow this tutorial to make my own hat. I also appreciated that you shared your thought process, such as not ironing the fabric if it does not respond and adding lining if necessary. Thank you for taking the time to make a great tutorial.
YOOOO YOU DID IT! I'm very impressed, and the fabric choice is very slick. I also like the attention to the hair showing through the thin fabric, and the little extra shaping you do at the end. Excellent hallo'ween hat. I have another hat challenge if you're up to it. A simple old-fashioned or modern flat cap.
haha- I’m glad you like the hat and the video😊!! I appreciate your video suggestions always, though I cannot promise I get to it soon-I’ll keep the flat cap idea in mind ❤️
I’m taking on my first ever sewing project right now for a costume, and I needed to find a good pattern for a hat… just came across this video and it’s exactly what I wanted my hat to look like!! Excited to try this out :D
I'm gonna try to do this with a heart shaped brim, hopefully it works out just as well! ty fir the super helpful tutorial, all your creations look very pretty :)
I am a green witch ( herbalist) so i am going to make a hat for my costume. I purchased one but i need to add a hat band because it is too big for my head. Can't wait to get sewing. Thank you for sharing your video
the hat circumference is just the head measurement (or how big you want your hat to be) and measure that amount on the curved line so that the bottom of the cone is that measurement!
if it’s only a little tight, you can try to (1) steam and stretch (this depends on the fabric you used though), (2) reduce center back seam allowance of the cone part to widen the circumference, which means you stitch closer to the edge and take out the original seam, or (3) clip the seam allowance more frequently (like half inch apart) and cut closer to the seam at the base (this is where the cone and the brim are attached). I hope that makes sense!
I tried this out and was so satisfied w the end result until I put it on and realized the hole was too small for my head. Is there any solution for this? Fmlll 😭
oh no! If it is just a little bit small, I would try to steam & stretch. If it’s a lot smaller than your head, I would undo the seam that’s connecting the brim and the cone, make the inside edge of the brim bigger, make the seam in the cone smaller to make the cone bigger, then re-attach the two pieces. i hope you can save your project 😭
Im trying to make a hat that looks like prunce juice cookie's from cookie run kingdom but i dont know how to do it T-T And what if you don't have a sewing machine? (My grandma has it but I suck at using it 😔) can I just hand sew it instead?
You can totally hand sew a hat! 😆 I had to look up the character but from what I saw in my quick Google search, it looks like a pretty complicated shape if you want to create the drape in the cone part… try looking up “Fosshape”. this material might be a good option for something like this :)

Would you consider making a Santa hat pattern? I’ve tried on my own but can’t get a nice shape.
That’s a great video idea for holiday season ❣️🎅 Until then, I think the cone part of this hat should work for the Santa hat..?
Can you explain the hat circrcumference @ 2:15 ? Thank you

about 3/4 of a yard I think
