Real sick hat. These projects make me want to attempt the leathercraft, but I am worried I will buy all the materials, do half a project, then wander off like I always seem to do. *Looks over at table covered in clay supplies and half done wooden boat*
I'm somewhat new to Leatherwork, but I have friends with way more experience. The dremel trick was something they didn't know either, even the ridiculously talented leather carver. I did a similar play on mine, with things I like as opposed to "magical" symbols, and then antiqued it for a richer look. Thanks for the tips!
Actually, in discworld (making money I think) Moist Von Lipwig and Adorabelle come to Unseen University to consult a wizard about a niche linguistic query. They meet a junior wizard before hand and notice his beard is a false one. He informs them that beards in fact are not compulsory
@@Everythings_Adjustable actually only the Tiffany Aching books, and The Amazing Maurice are YA. Discworld os largely for a bit older of an audience. Think Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but fantasy. Not too explicitly for kids though I would say
I made a wizard costume out of stuff I had and stuff I bought for it I have a hood instead of a wizard hat and it was so much fun it made me feel like power wizard
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Tony over at Diesel Punk has the best patterns on the interwebs. Awesome idea using the rotary tool for tooling. My tooling sucks but my dremel skills are tight. And yes, I took advantage of Tandy's black Friday deals too.
Purple is, actually, more of a magical color. Purple is an uncommon color in nature, and when it is produced it's usually alongside blues and greens. Purple itself is historically associated with royalty and power. Good on you and your brain.
I've made this hat. Love dieselpunk.ro. Made mine of some leftover chrome tanned, it's serviceable but hindsight being 20/20, I'll use the recommended 4oz. vegetable tanned leather
How was the flexibility of the chrome? The one issue I have with mine so gar is that the veg tan can be a little stiff. I am sure it will ease up a bit as I wear it in but still.
@@SkillTree *had to try it on again to get a feel* the cone part will not stand up and stay with the chrome tanned leather I used. That said, it droops behind my head like what I would assume a worn, owned, hat would eventually do. That and you can't really tool chrome tan so I'd likely do the veg tan and wear it and apply plenty of neatsfoot or mink oil to soften it
It was terrible but the experience.... it changed me... I now need to be careful not to crush doorknobs or break drinking glasses as I hold them. I shook my coworker's hand.... they say he will be out of the hospital soon and the prosthetic is top of the line but I still feel bad about it.😣
I keep looking at the breaks on the layers and thinking if you topped it off at just the first "ring" and bent the brim just right it would make a pretty close approximation of the hats typically worn by red mages (a.k.a. "battle mages" as they possess proficiency in melee combat as well as magic) in the Final Fantasy games. So that's something I need to look into if/when I can get my hands on sufficient quantities of leather to try this myself.
This was a cool video to watch. I especially liked the engraving you did on the leather which gave me an idea for if I make my own wizards hat. One thing I've noticed when it comes to wizards and sorcerers is that they have a strong connection to astrology, so for the top part of the wizards hat, I'll probably carve in the eight phases of the moon in an alchemical circle while on the bottom part have the alignment of the night planets in our solar system.
A couple years late to the party, but I totally would have used a silver leather paint to highlight the lines you engraved. Just to make them stand out more. Plus purple and silver look sweet together.
I can totally see where you are going with that and it would look pretty sick, but I also support the way he went with it. I love the dark look with that color. A practical wizard might not want his symbols to be super easy to see from a distance, lest his enchantments be known to his enemies.
@@Scalesthelizardwizard "Oh, yes. J'zargo hopes to find things that will make him a more powerful mage here. Hopefully small things that fit inside pockets, and will not be noticed if they are missing." Love that Khajiit.
That's such a bad ass build. I don't think you mentioned anything about sizing the hat. Can you make the middle wider or smaller depending on if you have a melon head or a peanut head?
Thanks! When you go to buy the pattern, there is a sizing chart. If going with veg tanned as I did, I would size up one size as it stretches a little less than the chrome tanned leather does.
Bit late to the party and no idea if you react to older video's, or anyone reading this. Could you replace the leather for something cheaper? Like foam for example?
Foam I guess would be a little flimsy because of its softness. If you don't want to use leather try using worbla. It is cheaper and it is durable too. And it is easier to work with.
In Discworld Mustrum Ridcully has an amazing wizard hat filled with pockets/drawers for pipe, tobacco and a wee bottle of hot sauce and a holster for a mini crossbow on the hatband (he's an opportunistic hunter you could say), but in the tip resides a little flask. For emergencies
3 YEARS LATER....for the seam in the rear; you could pound it down over an anvil, along with any other seams..just adding two cents -worth. Have a great day.
Hey, Heavy Rain! Long time no hear!😁 Love it. What do you think would be a good replacement for Phoenix feather in the core? Maybe I could get my hands on some monkey hair🤔
For the seams the stick out inside the hat that poke into your noggin, I would modify the pattern slightly to have those sections have a flat stitch (like with the Plague Doctor's beak) with those pieces butting flat next to each other, or over-lay and sew them that way. Stiff leather shouldn't be sewn sandwich style. It leaves those annoying tabs that are bulky and stick into you. 😕

I love the super chill style. I also love the dremel trick! Gonna give that a shot!
LOVE THIS HAT... NEED LEATHER HERE IN CANADA.. OUFF.. BUT LOVE IT AND VERY NICE STICH WORK.. WOW... VERY NICE..!
A quick tip: if you’re using a stiff veg tan leather hide, wet leather to help flip the crown pieces right side out and also the edge of the brim!
I like how you are unafraid, courageous and well acquainted with the spirit of adventure. (Glad you survived school)
hells yes! now you gotta grow beard to a wizard beard!!!!
It's already turning grey with power. At least I tell myself that's why it's changing😬
only logical answer I can think of
