To quote Yahzee Crowshaw "I challenge you to think of one thing that's not improved with the addition of pirates. Pirate themed executions, pirate-themed bar mitzvahs..."
It should've either been played completely straight and be a horror/suspense episode or a silly comedic episode. Trying to be both makes it dull and a waste of good ideas and actors.
The second time Captain Avery the pirate comes up in Dr. Who. He was mentioned in the William Hartnell episode 'The Smugglers' where everyone is searching for his treasure :)
Love this episode. The siren is actually one of the few villains that I (a grown-ass woman) found scary on first watch. Doesn't hold up as well now, but pirate!Amy makes up for a lot of weaker points.
Literally snorted when you talked about your happy places, but just before you made your comment about it. Good to know accidental innuendos are transatlantic.
I always really enjoyed this story. Sure, it’s filler, but it brings its own unique thing that isn’t found in any other episode. It makes logical sense, a lot more than other “historical oh wait it’s aliens” episodes. As a stand-alone it’s fun, it’s not deep or powerful but it’s not trying to be. It’s trying to be exactly what it is, and it works. It’s like the Pirates of the Caribbean for Doctor Who, and I like it. It’s not amazing but it does work.
The fact that you like this episode just tickles me to no end. Amy in a pirate suit is awesome. I’m a costume girl. I love it when Rory dies, not because I want him dead, because it’s a running joke I enjoy. Personally, I think Moffat did it because everyone was accusing him of never killing anyone. Sure it lost its effect over time, but that wasn’t really the point. It’s part of the sick joy I get when I think Moffat’s trolling people.
Bow ties r cool Monks r not I know, it was great. I also get out a kick out of watching convention panels, and Matt Smith makes a comment about reading a script and saying to Arthur Darville something like, Sorry mate, you died again. LOL
nice to see Lily Cole as the siren/holographic doctor. She was in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and a cameo in The Last Jedi. I may have blinked and missed it but how did the son manage to hide on the ship for so long and only found now without ever realising his father is a pirate captain.
Gee, I thought I was the only person who liked this one. That it's filler doesn't really bother me, 'cause I like stand-alone stories better than arcs, anyway. And I really didn't like the Series 6 arc, for a lot of reasons.
I have to say I enjoyed this episode, and I loved the explanation for the pirates' cowardly behaviour! And of course, Amy in a pirate hat swinging a sword about! :-)
I honestly really enjoy this one. It is nothing but filler but there are so many really good moments in this. I really enjoy the captain understanding the tardis because "a ships a ship" and the doctor have the running gag of "ignore my previous theories up to this point" it shows that hes not perfect and I really enjoy it
@@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770 This episode's about some pirates who meet the Doctor, a native of Gallifrey and therefore a Gallifreyan. So the episode is literally about "Pirates and the Gallifreyan", which is a pun on "Pirates of the Caribbean". It's a clever pun which makes perfect sense, even if I say so myself.
I forgot that this episode existed tbh, the only thing worth noting is that the kid's cameo in "Good man goes to War" makes no sense because in this episode it established that he couldn't leave the life support system on the ship.
This episode is infuriating to me because it could have been great so easily. Just let Amy "die" instead of Rory. If they'd done that, they could crack open the Doctor and Rory's relationship separate from Amy, which they never did anywhere else in the show. Does the Doctor even like Rory as himself? Would he want to travel with just Rory, would Rory want to? As it was, Rory died again (yawn), the misunderstood medical help siren felt like a rehash of the Empty Child/Doctor Dances and the fun parts weren't fun enough to cover the lack of substance.
The point of TGWW is to examine the doctor and rory's relationship independent of Amy. Also I also always got the impression that the doctor never did particularly care for Rory at least beyond being Amy's husband, I mean just Rewatch TATM and notice the doctor's reaction to his death(s) or how in the doctor falls Rory is absent from the companion montage
@@Petit784 The Girl Who Waited dealt only with the Doctor and Rory's relationship through and with Amy, not in her absence, or just the two of them. Impressions aren't really the same as unpacking it. To say the Doctor didn't like Rory much seems like easy answer, and not one the Doctor would admit to himself. It's more complex than that, especially by this point in the series, and got more so as it went along.
This episode was the first episode of doctor who I ever saw -- I think it's a great introduction to the show BECAUSE it's so inconsequential but is still compelling enough to draw in someone with no DW experience. I seriously don't think there any many better first episodes to see besides maybe the eleventh hour. It's just so self contained and entertaining.
I love that they got model/actress/activist Lily Cole to play the siren. She is IMO a very interesting person, and quite striking. Unfortunately, she doesn't really get to do much with the part.
This episode had so much potential. But at the end of the day it's just the gang running up and down a pretty lazily designed boat, tryna figure stuff out. It had so much potential tho, and I do enjoy most of the elements. Just not the overall plots.
I enjoyed this episode, it’s one of my favourites of Smith’s era, but that might be more to do with the fact I love pirates, mermaids, and sirens in general. I know I’m in the minority here but I do love this episode.
Although this episode didn't float my galleon, I'm glad that some fans really enjoy it. That's one of the greatest things about Doctor Who - there's something in it for everybody.
I like most of this episode, but the part that I really dislike is the ending. It's just another piece of fiction with a very inaccurate portrayal of CPR.
I agree with you in this case, this is an episode which I know is filler to get us to the next part of the series, but I don't care. This episode is just a load of fun, and I enjoy watching this one.
Honestly one of the most forgettable stories in the modern era. It’s not terribly but it’s just really dull and boring, also wish the sea devils were involved for this story instead of a strange ghost woman.
I agree. The episode is ok but the monster is weak. I feel it needed something more epic, like the Sea Devils (or a Kraken!) Also, in real pirate times, the Black Spot was never a warning that a Siren was coming to get you; it was a warning from other pirates that THEY were coming to kill you. Look at Pirates of the Caribbean, that got it right
I find it rather forgettable, too. All I really remember is how disappointed I was that a fine actor like Hugh Bonneville wasn't given something better to get his teeth into.
It's a hell of a change of pace for sure(mehartees!) and largely forgettable but it's a fun romp! Again great cast having fun. It's never anyone's first stop when picking a who episode but as a fun diversion it's good fun.
I kind of like it too, for a filler episode but agree that it doesn't really stand out. The only things I ever recall about this episode are pirates and Amy having great fun. Other than that it is pretty forgettable but I do enjoy it when I watch it.
I’m really hoping you’ve seen Aardman’s Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists - it’s a totally underrated gem and well worth a watch (and review...?) 😁
Nothing wrong with filler episodes. I would be exhausted if every episode was life and death, Doctor Who should also be about fun. This one was just ok for me, nothing wrong with it, it’s just that it was forgettable.
Have you watched Black Sails? I have heard it described as a being a queer-coded pirate show, and it seems to have an excellent reputation. These days I haven't been watching a lot of video, but I have been meaning to check this out.
What else would you do with a folk law being/ classic horror being apart from reveal them as aliens in Doctor Who ? this has been going on since the Tom Baker era. Unless you want to reveal that vampires , werewolfs and sirens actually exist (which doesn't really suit the show in my opinion) I don't see where you could go with this concept. As you can probably tell I'm completely fine with this aspect of the show. can I just point out how awesome Matt Smith is ??? n' for me Amy is the best new who companion dare I say assistant ??? n' Matt Smith best new Who Doctor in the hizouse'!!
Perhaps the first time characters from folklore were portrayed as aliens was in Troughton's The Abominable Snowmen", with the Great Intelligence and his robot yeti. Then there was Azal in Pertwee's "The Daemons"., where various demons and devils of myth were revealed to be visitors from the planet Daemos.
Rory trusts Amy to resuscitate him because "She never would give up". She gives up after like 10 seconds of the worst attempt at CPR ever. Like the Doctor was useless too. Also, the Doctor had a pill to cure the Flesh lady's brain aneurism in a cupboard but can't cure the pirate boy's cholera? A 16th century pirate captain can pilot a spaceship through interstellar space and presumably attack other spacecrafts for plunder. Yeah, right.
This episode is pretty dull and unmemorable but honestly it's so bland I don't have any animosity or anger towards it. It's unoffensive. but the thing I dislike most about it is how it started the whole "let's name episodes after pop culture" thing that is always unfunny and cringey (apart from Mummy on the Orient Express. Great pun). Unfortunately both Moffat and Chibnall do this a lot. This episode would've been better as a more farce based pure historical (like The Romans) where Smith's comedy skills could be utilised a lot better as opposed to a boring alien as usual. As it is it's a weak link in what I actually think is a pretty solid series (controversial opinion?).
For me the most memorable thing about this episode was the priorities:
Captain: Toby!
Amy: Rory!
Doctor: TARDIS!
To quote Yahzee Crowshaw "I challenge you to think of one thing that's not improved with the addition of pirates. Pirate themed executions, pirate-themed bar mitzvahs..."
