I like how Amy never realised how dangerous the doctor was. He was just her imaginary friend. Rory realised straight away as soon as he entered the TARDIS for the first time, how dangerous he really was. And I love that Rory often gets mad at the doctor for being so reckless and dangerous around his companions. Scenes with just the doctor who Rory I wish occured more often.
Me too. I really wish those two would have had an "Amy light" eppisode. I would have loved to have seen them working together without Amy. Nothing against Amy, but it would have been good, mainly because Rory wasn't in awe of the doctor, he liked and respected him somewhat, but saw him for what he was straight away. Maybe if we had seen more of there search for Amy in 'A good man goes to war' with Rory all like "no! Shes my wife, and this is what you're going to do doctor! I think the doctor also had a hell of alot of respect for Rory, but I don't think he ever really forgave him for not saying "its bigger on the inside" 😂
I think a lot of folk miss in this one the subtext as how it pertains to the series arc with River. The position the Doctor puts Rory in is the exact same poition he is in with River. The Doctor can go back and rescue baby River, but then the River they know will never have existed, just like old Amy. Or they can live with adult River as their daughter and never get their baby back. Same choice different person. Thats the true meaning for me of the Doctor forcing Rory to make that choice, so Rory understands and feels the true weight of the decision and its the meaning in the Doctor's final look. He knows that Rory and Amy are going to have to have that conversation now and decide.
listen mate i've seen the girl who waited a billion times but you've just blown my mind, thank you!! that is exactly what's going on! oh boy now I wish they had addressed that more, made the connection just a tiny bit more obvious so that slow dumbasses like me don't have to read youtube comments to get it.
@@thedoctor6583 Glad to help. If you take the conversation between the Doctor and Rory and just swap the names out for Melody and River it becomes very obvious- RORY: You can't leave her. She'll die. [Gallery] RIVER: Doctor, let me in. [Tardis] DOCTOR: No, she'll never have existed. When we save Melody, this future won't have happened. RORY: But she happened. She's there. RIVER[OC]: I trusted you! DOCTOR: No, she's not real. RORY: She is real. Let her in. DOCTOR: Look, we take Melody we leave River. Only one River Song in the Tardis. Which one do you want? (The Doctor puts Rory's hand on the door latch.) DOCTOR: It's your choice. RORY: This isn't fair. You're turning me into you. DOCTOR: Your choice, Rory. The look at end just cements it as Amy asks what happened to other Amy - that look says the Doctor knows that Rory is going to have to tell her, and tell that older Amy had to sacrifice her own life, he could not do it, and why, and why therefore they cannot 'kill' the River they know. They will never get their baby back. Finally when Amy eventually confornts Kovarian what she says implies this conversation between them had to have happened and that Amy has accepted it- "You took my baby from me, and hurt her, but she is all grown up now and she is fine, but I'll never see my baby again."
Wow I had never thought of it that way before. If only there had been greater emphasise on why The Doctor never looked for Melody after A Good Man Goes to War.
This is the episode where Karen went from being a great actor in a great role, to being an excellent actor who would have a career outside of Who. This was the moment that sold me on her being more than a companion. You can't really compare Amy skills to the human races achievements. She had alien/future technology to learn from, plus all the robots etc. All stuff we as humans don't have. You might not be able to recreate the car you drive but I'm certain that, given time and circumstance, you could create a four wheeled, steerable vehicle that would resemble a car. Yes, it was a bit of leap to get to a sonic screwdriver but not big leap under those circumstances, especially as we (the viewer) don't know how exactly sonic's are made.
Whatever one feels about some of the flaws in some of these episodes, there were consistently moments when the Doctor's companions were able to break out and flex their acting chops, often overshadowing the Doctor him/her self. These moments make me cry every time, more so because the writers took the time to let us get attached to these characters. If a writer really cares about actors, they give them this sort of material to work with. You are so right that this is one of those episodes that really lets Karen Gillian break out into an actor loved world-wide. I really wish that there was more effort on the part of writers to give similar opportunities to more actors.
Sorry, but we also gotta point out some love and huge respect for Mr. Arthur Darvill's acting skills! The way he says "I'm sorry, I can't do this..." at the end and how he starts legit crying, wanting to open the TARDIS's door.... Holy shit, this always breaks me, at least one of the top 100 all time Doctor Who performances!!
@ChanCeNeck No need to say sorry as you make a very fair point. I only brought up Karen purely because of how successful she's been since leaving, which is arguably much more than any other companion. Even though others like Arthur, Jenna and so on have had success (especially Jenna with Victoria), it seems like Karen has gone to a whole other level.
I mean it’s not that far fetched in terms of science fiction. It’s a mechanical/electrical device that works by sending out certain waves or frequencies.
The really tragic thing about this story is that the Doctor was lying. The Tardis is capable of sustaining a temporal paradox. In fact a single Tardis is capable of sustaining a paradox on a scale roughly six billion times the complexity of this one. We saw it in the Last of the Time Lords/Sound of Drums. The Tardis was capable of keeping the Toclafane intact even as they murdered their ancestors. Compared to that, keeping two contradictory versions of a single person in existence should be fairly straightforward. But that goes against the fundamental nature of both the Tardis and the Doctor. While the Master had no compunctions about doing that, the Doctor simply won't. It's in the same vein as when he abandoned Captain Jack on Satellite 5 when he became a living paradox. There's what the Doctor can do, and what he won't do. He learned that lesson in the Waters of Mars. He won't play god.
And that's why he won't too. In not just "The Waters of Mars" he's seen what he could risk becoming if he does these things. He could do without breaking a sweat, and it probably wouldn't be a bad thing for him. Just this once, just for Amy. But _might_ be bad for him. And _maybe_ he can do it for Melody/River. And now maybe for someone else somewhere and somewhen else. And now he's running the risk of sliding down a slippery slope. And he knows how dangerous he can be; he's seen it. The Valeyard. The man at the end of "The Family of Blood." The Time Lord Victorious. The Dreamlord. And the Master. He knows how dark he, and those just like him, can go. He's just too afraid to try and maybe fall onto, let alone down, a slippery slope.
Actually that was because the master transformed the tardis into a paradox machine the tardis itself isn’t capable on its own and such machines are finicky after all we were warned that accidentally touching something may lead to it blowing up The only other example of this is when the tardis materialised inside of itself and that was a temporary time loop after exiting the universe so the laws of physics are probably different so may not be applicable in this scenario
@@jmurray1110 The Master had to transform the Tardis into a paradox machine because of the sheer volume of the paradox he wanted to stabilise. But while he had to alter the machinery slightly what's described as being able to support the paradox is "the heart of a living Tardis". Additionally the Doctor has made mention of the timelords' and more specifically, his ability to repair a paradox. In Father's Day he said once he'd returned the Tardis to its shell he could restore the timeline with the paradox Rose had instigated intact. At this time he knew full well that telling Pete Tyler if he dove in front of a car everything would be fine but it would be how it was. Which means that the fix he could institute with the Tardis wouldn't restore it how it was, otherwise he wouldn't have needed to wait for it. The Doctor is capable of stabilising a paradox. But he won't cause the rules of time exist for a reason. He's learned the consequences of taking them into his own hands the hard way.
Ten year old me HATED this episode. It was boring and there were no monsters. Now, I really appreciate it. It's not quite my favourite Eleven story and I don't have it in my top ten of his era (keep in mind he's my favourite Doctor and I adore so much of his run) but this is a fantastic character piece with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill especially giving it their all. The beginning of the episode is very contrived as Tom MacRae literally crowbars the plot into place but after that it's a great story that showcases how alien and harsh the Eleventh Doctor really is. I'm also impressed with how this is technically a Doctor lite episode (Matt Smith only spent a couple of days filming this episode in the TARDIS set from what I've read) but it doesn't feel like it. I do like this one, but the next episode... oh boy... do I LOVE that one.
For me, this is the peak of the trio. You know these characters inside and out. They're so organic, if only for this 45 minutes. Don't get me wrong, they've always been great characters. But here they're people.
(My favorite Karen Gillan episode. And that speech to her older self, wow): AMY: You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful, and then you actually talk to them, and five minutes later they're as dull as a brick? Then there's other people, and you meet them and think, not bad, they're okay. And then you get to know them, and their face just sort of becomes them, like their personality's written all over it. And they just turn into something so beautiful. AMY & OLDER AMY (together): Rory's the most beautiful man I've ever met. AMY: Please, do it for him. OLDER AMY: You're asking me to defy destiny, causality, the nexus of time itself, for a boy. AMY: You're Amy, he's Rory,. And oh yes I am.
Amy's monologue about how Rory is beautiful always gets me. I showed my husband this episode (he has seen about ten episodes of DW in total), and I'm just crying during that scene. Show this episode to the one you love!
Actually, Amy's technological prowess was _not_ overlooked: she learned the skills through the computer helper thing Though to be honest I don't remember if they actually said that in the episode or if that's my headcanon, but it's pretty damn logical :P
If it's your headcanon then one of us is telepathic as it's my headcanon too. Sometimes we just have to look from a side view and figure things out for ourselves (or not), rather than being told/shown.
lwaves I like that. Seriously not everything needs or should be explained. I don’t want the story to focus on explaining every little detail every fan wants to know.
I think Amy said something along the lines of getting the computer to tell her anything she asks it (except how to leave the complex), so maybe the computer had some information about how to make a sonic screwdriver? Maybe...
Yes, the facility AI will tell her anything except how to leave or how to avoid the handbots. Asking it how to make a sonic would he at the top of my list too!
I liked the part when the Doctor overlaps all the different time streams, and shows Rory the thousands of sick Apalapucians who all have one day to live. His first thought is "are they happy?" A great moment that shows Rory's caring and empathic nature.
Actually, to me this episode isn't about Amy as much as it is about Rory. I feel like this is a reverse of the "usual" - often, Rory was used as a "tool" to get Amy to a certain point/make a certain choice. This time, it's reversed, and I love it. And I love how he breaks down over that choice. Yes, !OldAmy helps him make the choice, but it was still his call, and he ended up choosing "his" Amy. Plus, Rory gets to call the Doctor out, and imo he gets far too few moments where he can shine like that. "You know what dangerous about you? Its not that you make them take risks, its that you make them want to impress you." "You should have tried harder!" "This isn't fair. You're turning me into you."
Just said elsewhere that this episode completely sold me on Karen having a good career after Who. I already thought she was great but this just made it certain.
Finally, I get to gush about my favourite episode ever. All the performances are top-tier, Karen Gillan especially conveys all the damage and hurt you'd expect from Amy. The very small cast works amazingly for this story and the setting and atmosphere are incredible. Tom MacRae's script is witty when it needs to be, emotional when it needs to be and the overall plot is interesting and dynamic. I love how Rory and Amy actually question the Doctor and how he isn't perfect and can fail sometimes. Even the little details, like how Anchor is where time goes at normal speed and Waterfall is where time moves faster, are really clever. Plus, glasses are cool.
I think it is believable that over the 36 years Amy had the computer interface teach her enough technical information that the computer wouldn't register as a threat to itself that she could eventually build a sonic screwdriver and then override the computer's safety parameters.
@@benw4409 to be honest, there is only really a couple of truly weak episodes in this season IMHO. Night Terrors & Curse of the Black Spot being the ones I felt were a bit on the weak side. Season 2 & 3 had more weak points IMHO.
@@TheMarcHicks It's the arc that puts people off. Even as someone who loves Eleven and the series I think Moffat made the arc a bit too convoluted and Wedding of River Song was rushed and confusing. Still a great series though with some of the best standalones of the entire series.
this episode always makes me bawl my eyes out. it is so emotional. literally all the acting is on point. it is a rollercoaster but nothing feels forced or contrived or unjust. it truly sucks you into how these people feel. a stellar episode.
The only complaint 11 year old me would have had for this one is that we never got to see the rollercoaster. Other than that, beautiful episode, always loved this one and it's a massive highlight of Series 6 for me.
"The Doctor and Jamie get separated from Zoe and when they find her it has been 36 years and she has made her own sonic screwdriver." "The Doctor and Adric get separated from Nyssa and when they find her it has been 36 years and she has made her own sonic screwdriver." I do agree that seems more likely.
This is one of my all time favorite Episodes to be honest. The Conversation that Amy has with herself through the mirror speaks to me on a deep, emotional and Personal Level, because I too experienced this phenomenon where I was interrested in Somebody only to realize shortly there after, that they are Not that compatible to me. But then there are These People where you think: Yeah they seem okay, until you get to know them and they Just become so beautiful. *Chills* The Screwdriver Thing bugged me too, but maybe she tricked The AI to Tell her how to build one? And "hacked" it by asking The right questions or Something. Just a thought... I know I am late to The Party, but I really Like your Dr. Who Reviews, keep it up you're doing a great Job :D
Thank you for this video. Your love for what you do is obvious and even when you don't like something, you said it in a kind (and maybe sad) way. You may be angry or exasperated but it is clear that you are angry bcs you do care. Watching your videos makes my day every time. I learn something new, see something in a new light or realize that critique does not come from hate all the time. And that is something personally important to me. So, what I wanted to say, thank you for what you're doing and stay as awesome and kind as you are. :)
The Hand Robots work for me, with exception for the Mona Lisa bit, yeah. Their needles and alien medication freaks me out, cos you don't know what you're getting. We have to trust our doctors, cos what's the alternative haha.
I think this is at least in the top 3 of my favorite #11 episodes and probably makes top 10 of all DW. I adore The Girl Who Waited and I get serious feels for Rory in this one. This one convinced me on a point that was brought up later in the series - that Rory loved Amy more than Amy loved Rory. Its so sad when you caught in that scenario.
I really dont see it. She adores him! Yes when they younger, she was in 2 minds, but that was more to do with the whole settling down thing rather than rory himself. Yes, she probably thought she had him on a leash because he made it so obvious how much he loved her, whereas she held back a little more. It really shown how much she loved him in this episode. Would you sacrifice yourself for your husband after he just left you 36 years previous? In her eyes that what happened. He left her there on her own for 36 years. She would have been imagining all sorts! She sacrifices herself so he can be happy with someone else. Again in her eyes it's someone else. She hasn't waited 36 years for him, why should she get her Rory. She knew Rory would be happier with younger Amy. She said "I'm giving her the days I never had" she should have said "I'm giving you, the Amy you deserve". Young Amy knew exactly what to say to her to get her to change her mind "do it for Rory" she knew that after 36 years of solidarity confident, that her love for Rory would still be so strong, that, that would be the way to her frozen heart. 💗💏💞
The thing that helps me with the Sonic Probe thing is that I'm 100% sure the Doctor has shown Amy how the screwdriver works and the Doctor would say that he built it himself (not this model, but still) and he'd tell her about that process too. I think that's a conversation that definitely happened.
Superb story. Absolutely amazing performance from Karen gillen. The old make up looks very good and I love that she even changes the way she walks! The fact the doctor lies and blatantly lies to her face, essentially knowingly killing her and making Rory decide who to keep. Rory is so angry and you see the reluctant traveller, Rory sees through the doctors facade. Oh man it's such a great story and so harsh.
this is a top-tier episode for me. it's companion centric, though, and that might be why it doesn't frequent 'best of' lists. maybe you have to be really invested in the whole amy and rory thing to really love it.
i love your review of this episode and I pretty much agree with everything except one minor thing: Amy ISN'T smart enough to do this. I mean no human is, but Amy especially has never been shown to have THIS kind of smarts. Amy is street-smart, not book/tech smart. Which is perfectly fine and it doesn't make her less of a cool character but still.
Normally you and I have almost exactly the same opinions when it comes to Doctor Who. This shows the law of averages. I absolutely despise this episode. It had such an amazing premise and the overall plot and acting were fine. But I really couldn't stand this episode. What ruined it for me was Amy. I understand she's justifiably pissed, but she takes it out on Rory (who waited for her far longer than she waited for him, and he never broke or took it out on her). She took it out on him despite it not being his fault. And she's pissed at the doctor but doesn't want him to fix it? Pick one, Amy.
This is the episode I have seen the least. I love Amy, Rory and 11 but I just can't get past Amy not asking which button? You call it a small mistake but it is something, regardless of the greatness of the episode, that I can't get past.
I forgot Amy hacked the system. But I think when I first watched it I thought she basically was told how to do it by the help computers because she figured out how to get it to tell her things it wasn't supposed to, which is very on brand for her. But I see where you're coming from with the robots and sonic b probe. I do really love this episode though. Amy and Rory's love story is so complex and beautiful and I think this episode was a great look into that.
That was one of my favourite episodes. Admittedly I haven't watched it since it aired. But it seemed so emotional at the time. It did so much for those characters.
While I do think they could have thrown in a line explaining it, we didn't get to see all of the zones in Two streams--it's entirely possible there was a library with books on technology that she used to learn--she had 36 years to pick up a new skill, after all.
I think it was good for the doctor to give the choice back to Rory because he's Amy's husband and the choice should be his because he loves Amy more than the Doctor and your right about Amy's technical skills not being that good to build her own sonic screwdriver and the robots being to easy to defeat but it is still a good story
"The Girl Who Waited": Karen Gilliam and Arthur Darvill's acting chops were totally on display. And also--as River Song says--"The Doctor lies." Heartbreaking. I love, love, LOVE this episode!!!!!!
Quality episode and I don't say that a lot under Moffatt. But I love how The Doctor and company are running to the Tardis and he closes the door on Old Amy and says: I'm sorry. That to me was: WOW. Impressive that The Eleventh Doctor could be that cold. Loved it!
When I first saw this episode, I thought it was not only the best Doctor Who story ever, but maybe the best episode of any TV show, ever. Still feel that way. Only nitpick I have is that Amy should have known intuitively which icon to press at the start.
They do something similar in _Deep Space 9_. Chief O'Brien's daughter is left on a deserted planet for several years and develops into a feral teenager. Everyone rejects the plan of going back to rescue her at a young age, because that'd erase the older version.
I always had the impression that Amy told Rory not to let her in because she hated the Doctor so much at that moment that she was sure she would kill him if she was let in.
Your issue with Amy making her old sonic and reprogramming the robot reminds me of the issue I also had with Rose in 'Turn Left' where she was the only one who knew how to fix the TARDIS and make it work. Way back then people would say 'But she rode in it many times!' and, funnily enough, the exact response I'd have was 'I ride in a car every day, but it doesn't mean I could fix or build one'. Yeah, I love 'The Girl That Waited', but that's definitely not the best writing.
I think this is the only eppisode that still makes me cry, every single time. Of course I balled like a baby at doomsday, Angel's take Manhattan, and journeys end ect like everyone else. After watching them a few times, not so much anymore. This still does. I really feel it for some reason. The music scores it brilliantly too. I have the same nit picks as you. Hacking the interface I could buy. Especially seeing as it's there to serve her, I suppose after 36 years you could make that work to your advantage. The screwdriver though. Maybe in the beginning if the doctor said something like "these controls, are mildly telepathic, work similar to those in my sonic screwdriver" then maybe with that knowledge, Amy could have figured out how to use the controls for a sonic. I'd still expect it to be a bit rubbish though. Like the doctor has an iphone and Amy built something similar to the phone the farther of the bride had in fathers day, or even a very old rotary phone. Could have been an opportunity to inject a little humor "hang let me use my sonic probe"... bzzzzzz, click,......click,......click,....... "it just takes a minute" click,...............beep, beep, beep, bzzzzzzz "oh hear we go....click, Amy shakes it then blows on it, bzzzzzzz, click, click, beep, beeeeeep, bzzzzz. There done. Out of all the things there, i think there were a vase, a figurine, and something else on display. Why did rory have to use a picture of the mona lisa? (Was surprised the picture wasn't suranne Jones, who played the mona lisa, in the SJA. Although she played Idris the tardis so might have been a little weird) I could understand if they were in an art gallery or something and it just would have been unrealistic to have anything apart from a picture at hand, but they could have had object on display there. Still remains one of my top 5 stories though
I liked the episode. I thought the robots were a bit ridiculous at times though. Did anyone else flash back to the wall between David Tennent's Doctor and Rose when Rory and Old Amy were on either side of the Tardis door? I think it does show off the blasé attitude of the doctor just jumping into wherever he lands cause he has regenerations whereas we don't!
The impossible choice was probably the hardest I've seen on new who. When it first aired and the subsequent rewatched I couldn't stop crying because I honestly couldn't choose myself... Why wouldn't Amy, having learnt to become self sufficient and independent want to fade back to who she was 40 years ago. Look at Donna, who would rather die than go back so I can see why Amy wouldn't want to change who she has become. Karen Gillan already had quite a rich voice before the aging so it didn't take much to tweak it to sound older so I couldn't imagine it happening to Rose or Martha. (Donna maybe) And how much sadder is it if you imagine this is how the story of little Amelia Pond ends?
I liked the episode a lot as well. It focuses on a point that Dr. Who (and time travel stories in general) pass over. The _Let's Kill Hitler_ conceit is a perfect example of this logic flaw. Yes, killing Hitler early in his career might have saved millions of lives. But it would have destroyed billions who would never have existed if not for Hitler and WWII playing out as it did. I for one would not exist, because my parents never would have met. Altering time would have extremely negative repercussions, no matter what one's motivations were. _The Fires of Pompeii_ did a much better job of relating this quandary -- let history happen, or make yourself feel good now? Although, they did save one family from the destruction, it was not the same as preventing Mt. Vesuvius from not erupting.
I don't think the Doctor making Rory choose was cowardly. I think lying and then slamming the door in older Amy's face, but ultimately, it SHOULD be Rory's decision--it's his wife (and young Amy is not conscious to make the decision herself)! His decision should have been the one that mattered over the Doctor's decision anyway! But it should have been something he knew in advance so he could think on it, not something sprung on him at the last minute.
The notion you could just build a screwdriver always bugged me even for the Doctor, when a show creates technology like this its supposed to be out of human comprehension and created by species infinitely beyond our own it needs to stay that way, The fact that nano technology is within human view but still would be IMPOSSIBLE to create without specialized tools no matter how advanced we got, so the fact that a sonic screwdriver / any galifreyan technology would be designed at the quantum level if not beyond is a clear indicator that one could not create one using spare parts or a full garage and a spaceship no matter if your human or timelord... else why doesn't every species and their gran have them knocking about. To keep moving Galifreyan Technology from the out of comprehension category and into can make it in a pinch if i have to territory it takes away pieces of the sci-fi magic. Even in matt smiths episodes where he or the mystery alien from lodger build a TARDIS, even though for 1 it was established they are grown not built and 2 can you really just build one of the most advanced, revered, sought after ships in the multiverse anyway, ffs its powered by a black hole and exists in its own dimension and is probably the most advanced ethereal consciousness in the universe that basically exists outside time... but sure have Dr 13 whip one up in an aircraft hanger in season 13
This was one of my favorite episodes. It had such a strong emotion element.... so like others have said in the comments, it does make it hard to rewatch. Also, can I just say how annoying it is that you can no longer stream Doctor Who on Prime for free? I used to rewatch each episode after you did your "Overdue Doctor Who Review" and now I can't! :(
Your issue with Amy making her own sonic reminded me of something. Did we ever get an explanation for Sarah Jane Smith's Sonic Lipstick? Like was the implication she made it herself, the Doctor gave it to her, or that computer "Mr. Smith" made it for her?
@@puddlel1ama327 Is it ever actually mentioned in SJA though? Like I don't doubt The Doctor gave them to her (and/or gave her something to show her how to make her own), but the only thing I could find implying The Doctor gave her at least the original one is from a novel. And the novels are kinda iffy as far as continuity with the show goes. Although I also noticed that seems to contradict something on the DVDs anyway now. Seems some Data Files thing on one of the DVDs just claims Sarah Jane found the original sonic lipstick inside K-9, but no explanation is ever given for where she gets the second from it seems. Although by then I could accept she was smart enough to make Mr. Smith analyse it off-screen so it could make a new one when needed.
@@AlexFyrehartDGAFCave I can't remember what mentioned the Doctor gave her them, but I think it was is SJA. Can't remember what episode though(I last watched an episode when I was really young.
Everyone says the Doctor was cruel to make Rory choose, but the choice had to be made, and it isn’t his wife. I think he did the best he could in the circumstances.
This one and The Girl In The Fireplace are fan favorites that everyone loves but I don't. I do understand why everyone loves this episode I just personally find it miserable and depressing. Great performances from everyone but not something I enjoy. It's also a nitpick but it annoys the crap out of me that no one tells her which button to press and/or she doesn't ask. Also that they got separated because she went back to get her phone. It's annoying how dumb these things are to get the story going and then it's all blamed on the Doctor by older Amy when it's not entirely his fault. I don't know, it bugs the hell out of me.
I believe the doctor did the right thing by leaving the decision to Rory. It would have been selfish for the doctor to decide. Amy is RORY’s wife. As hard as it was, it was Rory’s decision to make.
My main issue with this episode .... look at how long Rory waited for her. He didnt get bitter and angry. I totally see the difference, she aged and he didnt; she was alone, and he wasnt; but still. Over all though, yes, it was a great episode with amazing acting.
actually humanity's is right on the edge of being able to make a sonic screw driver right now. here not the best source but www.iflscience.com/technology/scientists-invented-reallife-sonic-screwdrivers/ don't think we have anything near strong enough to turn a bolt. nor precise enough to pick a lock. the first steps of the technology is there, tho.
@councilofgeeks this is a important question how did you come out to people because i am having trouble doing it because im bi and trans and i dont know what to do so can you help
This episode always kind of annoyed me because I didn't buy for a second that 2 amys could be in the tardis. But also because I can't empathise with old amy. I don't see how she could be so selfish.
"I don't care that you grew old. I care that we didn't grow old together!" I freaking LOVE that line
Ah yes, that's the correct version of that line".....I mangled it a bit. I also loved the 2 versions of Amy talking about why they love Rory.
😭😭
Absolutely. Rory had that perspective and sense that the doctor brought danger with him
I think a lot of folk miss in this one the subtext as how it pertains to the series arc with River.
If you take the conversation between the Doctor and Rory and just swap the names out for Melody and River it becomes very obvious-
RORY: You can't leave her. She'll die.
[Gallery]
RIVER: Doctor, let me in.
[Tardis]
DOCTOR: No, she'll never have existed.
(The Doctor puts Rory's hand on the door latch.)
DOCTOR: It's your choice.
I'd never thought of it like this! That's brilliant! Thankyou
Never thought about that! Terrific observation!!!!
Wow I had never thought of it that way before. If only there had been greater emphasise on why The Doctor never looked for Melody after A Good Man Goes to War.
I love the line "This isn't fair. You're turning me into you."
I loved Rory's line: "I am not angry that you got old, I am angry that I didn't get to share it with you!"
It's this line that makes sense of them staying in the past when they eventually leave the show. They are okay with it as long as they are together.
😭😭
This line chokes me up everytime. I know their love story isn't perfect but it's one of my favorites because of stuff like this.
Actually that was because the master transformed the tardis into a paradox machine the tardis itself isn’t capable on its own and such machines are finicky after all we were warned that accidentally touching something may lead to it blowing up
The only other example of this is when the tardis materialised inside of itself and that was a temporary time loop after exiting the universe so the laws of physics are probably different so may not be applicable in this scenario
@@BadWolf739 ok i was stating my observations of hoe paradoxes work and forgor about farthers day thanks for bringing this information to light
Rule one, the Doctor Lies!
Same
And which one is your favorite with Eleventh? Or maybe the whole top 10? I am very interested
For me, this is the peak of the trio.
You know these characters inside and out. They're so organic, if only for this 45 minutes. Don't get me wrong, they've always been great characters. But here they're people.
(My favorite Karen Gillan episode. And that speech to her older self, wow):
AMY: You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful, and then you actually talk to them, and five minutes later they're as dull as a brick?
Actually, Amy's technological prowess was _not_ overlooked: she learned the skills through the computer helper thing
Though to be honest I don't remember if they actually said that in the episode or if that's my headcanon, but it's pretty damn logical :P
This and The God Complex is exactly what I want from Doctor Who (not every week, obviously.)
I can't fault a single thing.
Its not that you make them take risks, its that you make them want to impress you."
"You should have tried harder!"
"This isn't fair. You're turning me into you."
Small moment that's easy to overlook - the lipstick scene. Subtle and played perfectly.
Where she goes to put on her lipstick but doesn't? I agree, so subtle, but says a thousand words without any dialogue at all.
@@k.stewart007 it's so good, teared me up last time I watched it.
Amy has massive education resources at her disposal in the facility so she could probably learn how to make the screwdriver
One of my favourite episodes ever. Probably Karen Gillan's best performance, imo.
Just said elsewhere that this episode completely sold me on Karen having a good career after Who. I already thought she was great but this just made it certain.
I also loved the 2 Amys talking to each other about why they love Rory so much.
This is amongst my top 3 episodes of Season 6: The Doctor's Wife, The Girl Who Waited & God Complex.
People give Series 6 grief but they forget how much good stuff there is.
I don't know why people hate series 6. It's my favourite I think, pound for pound.
this episode always makes me bawl my eyes out. it is so emotional. literally all the acting is on point. it is a rollercoaster but nothing feels forced or contrived or unjust. it truly sucks you into how these people feel. a stellar episode.
The only complaint 11 year old me would have had for this one is that we never got to see the rollercoaster. Other than that, beautiful episode, always loved this one and it's a massive highlight of Series 6 for me.
"The Doctor and Jamie get separated from Zoe and when they find her it has been 36 years and she has made her own sonic screwdriver."
"The Doctor and Adric get separated from Nyssa and when they find her it has been 36 years and she has made her own sonic screwdriver."
I do agree that seems more likely.
*Chills*
The Screwdriver Thing bugged me too, but maybe she tricked The AI to Tell her how to build one?
Last time I was this early this was a "night terrors" review
The Hand Robots work for me, with exception for the Mona Lisa bit, yeah.
Their needles and alien medication freaks me out, cos you don't know what you're getting. We have to trust our doctors, cos what's the alternative haha.
I think this is at least in the top 3 of my favorite #11 episodes and probably makes top 10 of all DW. I adore The Girl Who Waited and I get serious feels for Rory in this one. This one convinced me on a point that was brought up later in the series - that Rory loved Amy more than Amy loved Rory. Its so sad when you caught in that scenario.
Michael Diehl Yes he loved her more. She doesnt deserve him..
Overall I kinda disliked the Matt Smith Era but a few episodes really shine. This and Vincent and the Doctor among them.
The thing that helps me with the Sonic Probe thing is that I'm 100% sure the Doctor has shown Amy how the screwdriver works and the Doctor would say that he built it himself (not this model, but still) and he'd tell her about that process too. I think that's a conversation that definitely happened.
Honestly, i was too invested in the characters to even worry about Amy's sonic probe.
Your analysis is spot on. It's one of the best and most moving eps of DW ever.
Hell that was moving af, I mean, as much moving as the episode is, and it being one of my favourtie episode of 11, I really appreaciate your review.
You call it a small mistake but it is something, regardless of the greatness of the episode, that I can't get past.
i got past it, but i had to stop the episode and tell my boyfriend how stupid this mistake is :D i feel your dilemma
One of the best 11th Doctor stories and one of the very best stories of Modern Who.
This is probably the best review of this episode I have ever seen. Thanks Nathanial!
I've always thought of this as a weak story saved by great acting, esp. Karen G as 'old Amy.'
RIP Tuvix and RIP old Amy... The unfortunate reluctant doppelgängers.
You do an eleventh doctor REALLY well
That was one of my favourite episodes.
One of the best of Smith's run for sure
I think it was good for the doctor to give the choice back to Rory because he's Amy's husband and the choice should be his because he loves Amy more than the Doctor and your right about Amy's technical skills not being that good to build her own sonic screwdriver and the robots being to easy to defeat but it is still a good story
This was Sesskasays' FAVOURITE series 6 episode!!
"The Girl Who Waited": Karen Gilliam and Arthur Darvill's acting chops were totally on display.
And also--as River Song says--"The Doctor lies."
Heartbreaking.
Loved it!
One of your best reviews to date, mate! Everything is simply spot on. Great job :-D
I just considered the place, which was to support people for a long time, had a really good library/database and she read a lot.
This episode is emotionally painful, I can’t watch if very often. In this case I guess that means it’s good
Old Amy from this episode vs Nebula from the MCU
Love me that opening joke
Good one!
The Mona Lisa was actually painted onto a block of wood. A mistake Doctor Who has made twice.
That's what scaroth wants you to think!
This episode made me sad tbh. It was kinda heartbreaking to see rory want to save them both so bad. You can really tell how much they love each other.
When I first saw this episode, I thought it was not only the best Doctor Who story ever, but maybe the best episode of any TV show, ever. Still feel that way. Only nitpick I have is that Amy should have known intuitively which icon to press at the start.
I found out last year that one of the trainers at the gym I went to used to work in tv and actually made old Amy’s ‘Fat Suit’ for this episode 😀
Possibly my favourite episode! High concept done well
They do something similar in _Deep Space 9_.
I think this was one of the most touching episodes with Matt Smith.
I always wondered where she got her bottle of hair colour from in those 36 years, because she obviously used it.
I more often lean towards "The Doctor's Wife" but this episode is at the very least tied for the best episode of Matt Smith's tenure for me.
One of my favorite episodes. It really stretches the acting of each of them and pushes the characters in interesting ways.
This episode was a heartbreaker. Love it.
I have faith that you could build a car. Maybe not a Tesla but at least a Ford Focus.
This episode legit makes me sad for Old Amy!
(Donna maybe)
And how much sadder is it if you imagine this is how the story of little Amelia Pond ends?
Did anyone watch "Shrek 4" after seeing this episode and think: "waaait a minute"..? 🤔
Great video
LOVE this episode
I remember when it came out i solid thought about it for weeks.
Replace "DMV" with "Post Office"
Well she had k9 and Mr Smith so it wouldn't have been too hard to make one, I bet K9 has some schematics for the sonic screwdriver
After School Reunion, when the Doctor gave Sarah Jane K-9, he also gave her two sonic lipsticks.
Oh yes another episode I really don't remember 2 in a row lol
I believe the doctor did the right thing by leaving the decision to Rory. It would have been selfish for the doctor to decide. Amy is RORY’s wife. As hard as it was, it was Rory’s decision to make.
Lovely jubly
It also shows that Karen will be hot when she is older lol. Loved this episode.
Can the new showrunner and writers learn how to write stuff like this.episode please for the love of God!!!!!!!
My main issue with this episode .... look at how long Rory waited for her. He didnt get bitter and angry. I totally see the difference, she aged and he didnt; she was alone, and he wasnt; but still. Over all though, yes, it was a great episode with amazing acting.
actually humanity's is right on the edge of being able to make a sonic screw driver right now. here not the best source but www.iflscience.com/technology/scientists-invented-reallife-sonic-screwdrivers/
don't think we have anything near strong enough to turn a bolt. nor precise enough to pick a lock. the first steps of the technology is there, tho.
@councilofgeeks this is a important question how did you come out to people because i am having trouble doing it because im bi and trans and i dont know what to do so can you help
It's actually a probe, so... 😉
Never been this early before
This episode always kind of annoyed me because I didn't buy for a second that 2 amys could be in the tardis. But also because I can't empathise with old amy. I don't see how she could be so selfish.
I think she is more human because of that.
@@mayotango1317 it doesn't make sense. If she is smart enough to build a sonic screwdriver she should be smart enough to know 2 amys won't work
