  • There's a comfort to joining up with the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 4, yet it also feels like that the urge itself to join the faction is in part due to the game's design. Bethesda struggled to develop compelling factions outside of the Brotherhood of Steel's presence in Fallout 4.

Competency. The BOS actually ooze competence, with leadership, structure, power and technology.
The minuteman are a bunch of farmers turned vigilantes who don't do anything for themselves.
      The railroad are nonsense.
The institute is poorly written with their motives and reason to exist.

If you want something different, but still using power armor and energy weapons check out the America Rising mod, the Enclave's main story is somehow more action heavy than the Brotherhood's and you get some nutty equipment due to being part of the most militarily advanced faction in Fallout's lore.

It's because Bethesda is almost in a cult mentality over the Brotherhood of Steel. They either started the other factions first but wanted to hurry up so they could put their effort into the BoS or started the BoS then got bored with the other factions because they literally didn't care enough. Personally I really wish they would just go in and remake Fallout 4, basically just developing the factions then making the story longer and better... And choices!

I think this was made better in Fallout 4 because you aren't required to side with the Brotherhood just to get access to Power Armor.
They also made Power Armor less of a requirement by lowering it's Strength bonus and adding options like being able to upgrade non Power Armor via weaves.
(I still side with NCR during most New Vegas runs though because that just feels right in my heart.)

I relate to the institute personally. I'm all about progress and futuristic themes. When I join the institute it feels like nothing is hidden. I AM the hidden one. I feel like I'm the man behind the curtain, swaying the commonwealth to my needs. Not to mention the creation of a pure humanity. An advanced civilization ACTUALLY REBUILDING. The institute always felt like I was apart of something important. Hundreds of years of sacrifice and technological success.
The brotherhood is feared and respected by power alone.
They rob settlers of thier crops, take whatever they want, and ignore raider threats. This is obvious by the fact that they only came because they sought the institutes destruction.
They are a corrupt militarized government. At least. In the end. The institute is honest with you.

Minutemen could be salvaged if they reduced the amount of mandatory radiant quests, and let the player character "General" actual give orders, despite Preston's protests.
The Institute could be improved if they actually gave them a solid reason for kidnapping people and releasing synths, other than just being vaguely evil and utilitarian.

    @goldjaws 8 місяців тому

    You play the Institute
    You play the Minutemen
    You play the railroad
    You are the brotherhood
There are a lot of fallout factions, but when you play those factions, none of them really feel like “This is my home my team and my goal.” Well, there are a couple exceptions, one of them being the brotherhood.
When you’re in the Institute, the game ends with you feeling like you have to justify you being there.
When you’re in the Minutemen, it just kind of feels like you’re babying them and and worshiping Preston, Garvey’s feet like he’s that girlfriend you just can’t let go of.
When you first join the railroad, it’s justifying your existence, but then for the rest of your play through, you’re just doing whatever everyone else asks and not really getting enough credit for it.
But the brotherhood feels like there’s more progression. Not only do you raise up in ranks and get more respect as you do, but you get new armor paints to symbolize it throughout all of this not even at one point you ask “does it really mean anything?” And of course you don’t the way you interact with the NPC’s the way things change validates that things did change and your work did mean something.
The progression with the brotherhood of steel is just significantly more tangible than it is with all the other factions while at the same time, being one of two factions, where you don’t just outright, become the leader and the other faction that does it is the railroad and that’s the worst faction and not worth remembering.

Honestly... I kinda hate the Brotherhood in Fallout 4, I just find them more of an annoyance at times. I mean, I like the Brotherhood knights, they actually seem like the common infantry that you would see in an army, cool combat fatigues as well... But then there's the paladins, giant tank like power armor that's honestly pretty ugly and hardly fits into any room. Now add on that the Brotherhood think that they are the saviors of the wasteland and that people should basically kneel down before them while making already struggling farmers give them a portion of their crops... I use the Minutemen to destroy them every playthrough.

I, like so many others have played this hundreds of times over and over trying to do different things. Insisting that it was not going to trigger the Brotherhood, or not going to Diamond City, or not even interacting with the Minutemen and the first few times that I've played through I always gravitated towards the Minutemen Karma Preston was just a pain in my butt. I even tried only working with the railroad, that sucked. And just recently decided to become a Raider and go straight to Nuka world before anything else. Although it was interesting it sucked donkey balls

i've beaten fallout 4 with all 4 factions multiple times each. Ranked it goes 1- BoS (like em or hate em, their story is the best written and makes a lot of sense for Nate) 2- Railroad (You are a post apocalyptic secret agent and it makes the most sense for Nora imo) 3- minutemen (its fun to build up the settlements but gets tedious and is a very lackluster ending) and the worst is institute (shaun is a total piece of garbage, you lead them but have no power to change anything to for a type of peace between factions)
Extra ending- If you reclaim the castle and build artillery in a few settlements the railroad will refuse to let you join but there is unique dialogue where the general can confirm or deny support for the railroad, denying results in them turning hostile while supporing them just keeps them alive. this is the most unique way i saw a faction story end in the game.

I'm not a very rational or rule abiding person and at first glance, The institute is a place of relative freedom, progress, and a weird blend of rationality and order. I STILL don't really get them as much as i do the other factions, i don't think we're capable of understanding their true depth. This all to say yes, Father is a sociopath fixated on experimentation for its own sake, the Institute will use you as a guinea pig at best and also and effectively run a slave army, not to mention how many massacres they've commited or how how their entire utopia runs on own world tech with flashy exteriors. But one thing always stuck out to me about all of that. Father knows about all of it, and he explains it all in a simplistic way at some point in the questline, boiling it down to simple math in true sociopathic fashion.if i recall, he also haphazardly brings up the point that all factions, old like the brotherhood or potentially large newer ones like the minutemen, will eventually follow in a lot of the same actions, if they havent done so already. Maybe not to the same extent, but certainly he trusts in the process being that naturally occuring. Because that's what this destroyed world demands. They'll all hide it deep down, building their house on bloodied soil and planting the seeds of corruption where no one can see it. The Institute he muses at least is just doing it to its fullest effectivness and only hiding the true reason to insiders. Something I've always noodled.

Never use power armor but the brotherhood are the only choice. A Militia who start with nothing and end with basically nothing useful, an underground cult that offer some armored clothing and a bunch of isolationist scientists who offer worse laser rifles vs a group with an airship, power armor, heavy weaponry and existing structure AND you can get the extra stuff from the other factions anyway.

    No fallout 4.
The NCR is the best faction of all the games. Not only does it portray corruption of real world America but also has beef with the Brotherhood, a very scary plot point if presented to Bethesda.

Well fallout 4 gives you 4 choices. Two of them, the BoS and the institute, are the more or less the world powers of the game. The other 2, the minute men and Underground Railroad, are groups that have less members than the amount of fingers and toes one person has. The game gave us almost no reason to chose the minute men or Underground Railroad during your first or second play throughs.

so my primary objective is to rescue my child from a technologically advanced organization with armies of robots and weapons beyond what most people have ever seen. There is no way your going to succeed on your own, you will need help, your choices are #1 the broken remnants of a civilian millita that at this point consists of you, a guy with a crank powered gun and a few random malnourished guys you personally recruited. or #2 a hodge-podge of escaped synths who have spent decades struggling against the same enemy your facing and have barely survived, most recently they have lost there base and are living in a sewer ready to flee at the first sign the institute has found them. or #3 the guys in power armor with plasma canons, a giant airship and a nuke tossing robot. one of these just feels like they might be able to help more than the others.

Iv never done the BoS in 4, they aren't really familiar if coming from the 3 brotherhood and I mostly play characters opposed to them for various reasons, id sooner join the institute cause atleast then you'd be in charge at the end and capable of changing its worst parts.

See, I can't trust these bastards because I grew up playing Fallout 3 and liking that brotherhood faction because they were for the improvement of the wasteland And the people of wasteland there is only one faction in fallout 4 that is for that, and they are The most boring faction in 4 That would be the Minute Men And that is still a horrible option I wish there was an option to overrun all of the Capital wasteland with one of the Nuka Cola Factions and rule as a Raider king because at least then I could establish a rule of law and have a faction that made the inhumane approach fun

Im the same way for the minutemen. I just cant play fallout 4 without settlement building. You technically can still do it without the minutemen. Sanctuary hills and red rocket is the best player base at the beginning of the game. Unless you deny it and force yourself to nomad somewhere else its hard to ignore the easy opportunity and the raiders just down the road.

The brotherhood is just the most developed faction and one of the only ones to actually feel like a faction, the minutemen might as well just be the player character, the railroad consists of what? Like 6 people in a sewer or something and the institute while big enough to feel like a real faction just feels dumb

That being said: I never would team up with the Brotherhood - too fascist for my taste.

no its because everything in fallout 4 has to connect to the story in some way and its boring & pointless, af fallout 3/new vegas was so good at making these giant areas that tell their own story that every playthrough can feel new but everything in fallout 4 just always leads back to the main plot and makes the world feel a whole lot more empty and choiceless.
