Starting about a month or two ago I noticed that a few videos were available in this quality. I'm not sure what the story is, but that quality is definitely out there.
Great video as always C-Rad. It was really interesting to see all of the different kinds of lifts out there. Good work! That song will forever haunt my dreams haha. Great job, looking forward to the next one dude!
Why are all these people being so negative? I think you did well in this presentation. Certainly better than a lot of ski videographers! The only blame in my mind is people who will not take a lesson in leaving a lift, as in the last scene. And to be fair, when I worked on various lifts years ago, we would have had a better landing pad and exit. NEVER would we have expected 4 people to maneuver that exit smoothly, and all at once! I know that volume movement has a place when you have big crowds, but this is a poor method. Lastly, the only thing I hated about the TBar was a fellow rider who wouldn't do it right. (Or even talk to you!)
I've had the pleasure? of riding two of the lifts in this video. The South Ridge (triangle) Triple at Killington, VT (2:13) and The Skimobile at Cranmore, NH (4:23). The South Ridge chair had (2) 45 degree turns to allow for unloading and loading - although the ramps were removed before the video was taken. Both of these lifts no longer exist.
I remember a really scary 1-man chairlift in Hopfgarten/Austria which took you to the top. It was really old, small and made of wood and you had to strap yourself to it with a chain (not even kidding) :)
The alpauris, Alpe d'huez at 3:09 used to call that the scare chair! Also interesting that it has a mid station going one way but not the other. The tunnel at the beginning is actually under a runway from a alpe d'huez airport.
The 3 seats detachable VON ROLL chairlift n. 12 in the video (the first one from the beginning) looks VERY similar to the chairlift which was installed in Engadin (Switzerland) and connected Marguns to Corviglia. If I remember correctly it was installed in 1985 and then replaced with a 4 seats chairlft around year 2000 (still running today)
conradmward, cool video. my pops skied professionally for a while and worked at jackson hole for many years. i hate to be 'that guy', but nothing can be very unique or most unique, etc. unique means one of a kind. something either is unique or it isn't. unique is a non-gradable adjective. i'm only pointing this out because you use it a lot, and it will make you look better to do so correctly! no hard feelings!
Cool video. I got to ride the old Mount Snow lifts. They still had one of the rolling chairs back in the '80s. Remember they were incredibly slow and dripped oil a lot. Also that Glades Triple at Killington is much more violent than it looks in the video. There would always be goves and poles scattered around the turn. There was also a big sign at one point that said "HANG ON" before the turn!
Interesting selection of lifts, but you missed out the cable car in Zermatt that goes into the top of a mountain, the highest lift station in Europe. And the chair in Val d'Isere that goes over the top of a mountain ridge, taking your breath away as it drops the other side, the lift in Verbier that has both chairs and gondolas on the same wire, the railway lift that goes up thru the Eiger mountain, and the ski escalator in the Tamworth indoor skidome. .
Those lifts sound like they should be included a my next unique ski lift video. I will definitely be scrolling through all the comments for suggestions when I make it. Thanks a bunch!
Don't forget about the Meadow double at Alpine Meadows, CA. It's bottom station is actually a mid station. As well as the Breckconnect Gondola at Breckenridge for being the only detachable lift I know of that has a mid station.
Yeah, those are definitely uncommon kinds of lifts, particularly those old Yan contraptions. Detachable lifts with mid stations are uncommon, but can be found. For some detachable lifts, the mid station is only on one side of the lift.
That's actually a good point which I was not aware. Fortunately I am not the only one using the word unique this way. The way I thought of it is that "most unique" can be used to describe lifts with the highest number of unique features. So while every skilift in the world is unique, a lift with more distinct unique features can be considered "most unique." While it might have better to name this vid "Top 12 Most Unusual Ski Lifts," there's no way I am changing the title now after so many views.
The first lift (not including the introduction) has a really complicated bottom terminal. The one at 2:24 is highly unusual because of its turn which is extremely unusual for that kind of ski lift. It really jerked me around when I rode it.
Alpe d'Huez yay ! You should've posted the video of the Pic Blanc ski lift, it goes up to the longest and highest ski slope in the world : Sarenne (3330m) and the view is stunning
The Killington South Ridge chair was replaced last year with a hand-me-down lift after they upgraded the Snowdon Quad to a high speed bubble six. The new South Ridge Quad runs straight up and down the old downhill line; The D shaped uphill line was not repeated.
I love those lifts in chile I wish they had them in the states, they are so fast and you can put them anywhere. Its like skiing uphill!! one of the best parts about those is if you are on one by yourself you can jump and you will get 4 or 5 seconds of airtime while being pulled uphill!!!
Are you sure that the photograph at 2:50 is actually a ski lift? I'm fairly sure that its the chairlift at the Cataract gorge basin in Launceston, Tasmania Australia. It however is the longest single span chairlift in the southern hemisphere, pretty interesting.
pretty cool idea... some of them are really not that special, especially if you live in the mountains. But bro, do another one with all the suggested lifts in the comments, would be nice! cheers!
take it easy! I'm definitely looking forward to it! So boring they always replace the old ones with the new shit, at least in my shabby town. finally some inputs from my side: Porsche Sideways Chairlift in Laax, CH and the Funitel Galzigbahn in St. Anton, AT
The first one, the VonRoll detachable, is not the only VonRoll detachable. There was one at Gore, NY that has been removed. Plus, Grisch of La Siala has been removed.
I remember the one in Killington it actually hurt when you went around the turns but when I went back a few years ago I could not find the lift. I think they took it out.
AHHHH KILLINGTON MY HOMEEEEEE MOUNTAIN. They took out the south ridge triple though soooo, but it was so fun riding it with your eyes closed. Also I ride the peak to peak when ever I go to whistler but I went on the one with the glass plate in the floor so you can really see the trees below.
Well as a ropeway engineer beeing a fan of unique lifts i am missing a few of them but still a good idea with some pretty nice lifts i didnt know till know ... just to mention some you should add from Europe: Jennerbahn - Berchtesgaden - Germany - Last lift in Europe without big changes in System VR101 (first detachable system ever to be built) Basketlift Algund - The oldest and maybe one of the last running basketlifts all over the world just 2 of them ... for some more ask via pm greets
The majority of chairlifts have safety bars have safety bars although some do not. For a scary lift without a safety bar, search "TSF2 High Campbell - Crystal Mountain" and click on the first link and then click on the picture. If you scroll down that, you will see lots of pictures of that lift including a really high part over a cliff.
The double loading lift was built by Poma. Breckenridge is mainly a Poma mountain except older installations. The name of it is "Quicksilver" by the way. If you want more information, I'd be happy to send it to you in a personal message.
Mont Orford in Quebec Canada has a hybrid lift that carries a detachable 6 chair and Gondola all on the same lift. You load on the right side to get on the gondola and go through gates for the 6 chair on the left
The video does not show one key thing at Portillo. The ride must return *all the way down* for the next group of skiers. Other skiers are waiting with nothing better to do than take bets about how many of you will fall over. It's a spectator sport. If I recall correctly, there are two sets of those free-hanging pods, four pods at each end of the loop. When one set (full with skiers/boarders) tops out, the other is just returning to the bottom. The cable is stopped, loaded, and then reversed.
Hey conradmward, nice vid. CHeck out the south ridge triple at Killington. It is a chair that make s a couple sharp turns and they had to close it because people kept falling off. LOL
Okay, I would venture that less than a dozen chairlifts turn around the world, but you are right, a turning surface lift is a bit of a stretch for this video :)
The first chair actually was not the only one built by von roll-habegger, there was one built in 1984 after von roll purchased hall, at gore mountain in New York that was replaced in 2014 by a new express quad (and yes the von roll was an express triple)
I love ski lifts for the view and relaxation I love to be alone sometimes when I’m out out school for Christmas and my parents let me spend 8 hours letting me go wherever the hell I want I still love it
This video reminds me of my childhood
3:49 been there done that. takes forever. 2.1 miles
Was put in during the North American Ski Corporation years for no particular reason at all. Hardly runs anymore, taking the bus is faster and easier.
Starting about a month or two ago I noticed that a few videos were available in this quality. I'm not sure what the story is, but that quality is definitely out there.
Thanks for sharing; that will definitely be considered if I make more videos on unique ski lifts!
Yeah, that triple at Killington is the one chairlift in the video I have actually ridden. That was crazy!
See you in two month when the vidéo blow up
Great video as always C-Rad. It was really interesting to see all of the different kinds of lifts out there. Good work! That song will forever haunt my dreams haha. Great job, looking forward to the next one dude!
Glad you included the old skimobile from Mt. Cranmore! I rode that thing once and it was really bumpy. Good video.
The Killington one? Yeah, it was quite startling even if you were prepared for it.
Lastly, the only thing I hated about the TBar was a fellow rider who wouldn't do it right. (Or even talk to you!)
thanks for showing the conveyor lift at Mt. Snow, Vermont. I forgot they had those!
I've had the pleasure? of riding two of the lifts in this video.
The South Ridge (triangle) Triple at Killington, VT (2:13) and
The Skimobile at Cranmore, NH (4:23). The South Ridge chair had (2) 45 degree turns to allow for unloading and loading - although the ramps were removed before the video was taken. Both of these
lifts no longer exist.
why don't you say where the lifts are?
If you click the captions button in the lower right corner of the video, you can turn the captions on!
+conradmward I didn't see the names too, until i switched subtitles on.
+Marco S Which is why you listen to it when it says to turn captions on...
+Evan Pryce I didn't know what "captions" was until i discovered that it was an other word for "subtitle".
Fair enough, are you British? I think Americans call them captions but just worked it out.
I remember a really scary 1-man chairlift in Hopfgarten/Austria which took you to the top. It was really old, small and made of wood and you had to strap yourself to it with a chain (not even kidding) :)
2:40 where did you get that music? from Microsoft flight simulator X? hahaha
Sim City 3000 - Broadway
Glad you enjoyed it!
Have used a fair amount of different lifts, I fail to see what is "unique" apart from the vintage footage
Turn on captions
ive been to the alp duez lift and its really epic and its really nice senery on the way!!!!
Thank you for posting! That was a lot of fun to watch.
These things used to scare the crap out of me, but now I love them. I wish I could ride one every day.
I watch this video over and over again
I mean they look very interesting, and it would be all around fun watching the people unload from them.
The alpauris, Alpe d'huez at 3:09 used to call that the scare chair! Also interesting that it has a mid station going one way but not the other. The tunnel at the beginning is actually under a runway from a alpe d'huez airport.

Sugarbush, Vermont. It's only open on weekends and vacation weeks in case you are hoping to ride it.
Wonderful, great interest for a skier, traveller-explorer, engineer (all of which I am).
What I don't get is so many dislike it!
Thanks for the support!
conradmward, cool video. my pops skied professionally for a while and worked at jackson hole for many years. i hate to be 'that guy', but nothing can be very unique or most unique, etc. unique means one of a kind. something either is unique or it isn't. unique is a non-gradable adjective. i'm only pointing this out because you use it a lot, and it will make you look better to do so correctly! no hard feelings!

There was also a big sign at one point that said "HANG ON" before the turn!
Yes, and in the case of the Killington lift, it was originally built with a mid-station.
at 3:04 yes i have been on that lift recently, its in espace killes france, val disaire, on the glacier
Interesting selection of lifts, but you missed out the cable car in Zermatt that goes into the top of a mountain, the highest lift station in Europe. This video is awesome. I would think ski lifts crossing over each other would be up their some were.
Don't forget about the Meadow double at Alpine Meadows, CA. It's bottom station is actually a mid station. As well as the Breckconnect Gondola at Breckenridge for being the only detachable lift I know of that has a mid station.
there is a gondola at Killington, VT with a mid station as well as a gondola in Snowmass, Colorado*
Yeah, those are definitely uncommon kinds of lifts, particularly those old Yan contraptions. Detachable lifts with mid stations are uncommon, but can be found. For some detachable lifts, the mid station is only on one side of the lift.
Glad they improved as they go along.
Thumb up if you like that nostalgic sim city music...
Who the hell designed and manufactured a 4-person drag lift? Are they criminally insane? Love it!
insane enough to have it end on that angle of slope as well, looked painful for skiers i can't imagine 4 snowboarders trying to get off that at once
This video is awesome, i never knew such amazing lifts existed! Also which lift is at 2:35? It also looks interesting
Snowflake lift at Breckenridge (referred to as the the jiggle lift by locals as it jiggles going around the corner) Super fun lift tho!
yeah, I also found it cause of the kid falling off... and I´m glad I did it cause your video is pretty cool
What brand of potato was this filmed on...
Ryan Kochen fried
Ryan Kochen lol
Its too high quality to be Ryan Kochen Fried, this is like mashed potato quality.
kentucky fried chicken
its so cool how it turns on one of the char lifts!

Cool stuff. Nice editing too.
Alpe d'Huez yay ! You should've posted the video of the Pic Blanc ski lift, it goes up to the longest and highest ski slope in the world : Sarenne (3330m) and the view is stunning
I live in Vermont, and i can tell you, The lifts here are quite interesting indeed.
Very nice video! Great music also :)
The Killington South Ridge chair was replaced last year with a hand-me-down lift after they upgraded the Snowdon Quad to a high speed bubble six. The new South Ridge Quad runs straight up and down the old downhill line; The D shaped uphill line was not repeated.
At 3: 54, that was Silver Mountain's gondola, one of the longest ski lifts.
I love the slingshot lifts....those would be fun to operate.
as of 2022 a lot of these classic lifts have been replaced with newer ones
I love those lifts in chile
I wish they had them in the states, they are so fast and you can put them anywhere. Its like skiing uphill!!
one of the best parts about those is if you are on one by yourself you can jump and you will get 4 or 5 seconds of airtime while being pulled uphill!!!
6:20 I rode this.
Hi!
Same
It's actually travels quite the distance and gains a good amount of vertical. There's a link in the description with a video of the ride.
Are you sure that the photograph at 2:50 is actually a ski lift? I'm fairly sure that its the chairlift at the Cataract gorge basin in Launceston, Tasmania Australia. It however is the longest single span chairlift in the southern hemisphere, pretty interesting.
South Ridge Triple at Killington was gone last time I was there.
pretty cool idea... some of them are really not that special, especially if you live in the mountains. But bro, do another one with all the suggested lifts in the comments, would be nice!
cheers!
Nice Sim City 3000 Music!!!
Better update. Vail, Colorado USA's new gondola "One" is pretty special! =)
The one at 5.21 is not a ski lift. It was used to haul material from a mine in Malå, Sweden.
take it easy! I'm definitely looking forward to it! So boring they always replace the old ones with the new shit, at least in my shabby town. finally some inputs from my side: Porsche Sideways Chairlift in Laax, CH and the Funitel Galzigbahn in St. Anton, AT
I'm like "Hey, that's Sim City music!.." And so it was!
oh yea, i knew i heard it before, i thought it was flight simulator X
ive been on the peak 2 peak in whistler! i even got the silver glass bottom one!
The first one, the VonRoll detachable, is not the only VonRoll detachable. There was one at Gore, NY that has been removed. Plus, Grisch of La Siala has been removed.
Quite an impressive collection. I have been on four of them!
I remember the one in Killington it actually hurt when you went around the turns but when I went back a few years ago I could not find the lift. I think they took it out.
MaineCentral114 It was removed in 2011 or 2012.
The uphill line had the turn (45 degrees X2). A fixed grip quad chair was installed on the downhill line in 2018.

What about Flaines funicular
Mont Orford in Quebec Canada has a hybrid lift that carries a detachable 6 chair and Gondola all on the same lift. You load on the right side to get on the gondola and go through gates for the 6 chair on the left
An uncommon type of lift, but there are a few dozen spread out around the world!
+conradmward more than a few dozen of the ones shown in this
Zermatt has one! It’s literally a train
Yes a train
Wow! A TRAIN!!?? It must be the only mountain in the world with a train to the top. Amazing yes AMAZIIIING!!
The video does not show one key thing at Portillo. The ride must return *all the way down* for the next group of skiers. No I think you were clear. Glad the translation helped! :)
the killington one? Either that or the one at Snowbird.
south ridge triple is now being replaced with the south ridge quad (previously the snowdon quad) and will not have any turns
Hey conradmward, nice vid. CHeck out the south ridge triple at Killington. It is a chair that make s a couple sharp turns and they had to close it because people kept falling off. LOL
OOops lol. U had it already sry for the confusion.
The one in val d'isère was slower before and some people used to jump from the skilift when they were above the ridge
Okay, I would venture that less than a dozen chairlifts turn around the world, but you are right, a turning surface lift is a bit of a stretch for this video :)
AWESOME VIDEO! i love skiing:)
Ive been to alpe D’Huez but do not remember a chairlift that goes under a bridge?
The first chair actually was not the only one built by von roll-habegger, there was one built in 1984 after von roll purchased hall, at gore mountain in New York that was replaced in 2014 by a new express quad (and yes the von roll was an express triple)
4:00 thats sugarbush its called slidebrook
a von roll detachable triple had been built at gore mountain NY however it used hall chairs and towers with von roll detachable technology
Interesting, that is probably the reason. Thanks!
proud to have been on the Peak2Peak
Only at the top and bottom, not in the middle. This particular lift made a triangle instead of a line.
I here it is super comfortable and awesome! I don't think it goes in the category of unique, though.
I used to play that game all the time!!!! I immediately recognized the song
The Killington south ridge triple is now closed .they took it apart last season . too bad fun lift with jerky left hand turn half way up ..!
I love ski lifts for the view and relaxation I love to be alone sometimes when I’m out out school for Christmas and my parents let me spend 8 hours letting me go wherever the hell I want I still love it
What about the Imperial Express at Breckenridge? It's the tallest ski lift in North America
How about the Gondola at Sunshine Village, Banff?
I couldn't get over that the music was from roller coaster tycoon or some roller coaster game.
why not the lift les arcs-la plagne (the largest lift in europe wich connects the two domains)?
Last one is really cool.
Thanks for the support!
