  • Did you know that when on a ski trip, you only spent roughly 15% to 20% of the time skiing. The rest of the time is spent in a lift or line riding a lift. Standing in line is definitely the worst part of any ski holiday, but riding the lift isn’t actually too bad. You get to have great conversations while enjoying the view. From diamond-studded cabins to a sauna gondola, in today’s video we’re taking a look at the coolest ski lifts in the world.

    Even more interesting hybrid lift than The American Eagle is the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier Gletscherjet 3-4. First half is hybrid (Gletscherjet 3), but in the middle station the chairs go down to the first station while the gondolas continue to the peak of Kitzsteinhorn (Gletscherjet 4).

      The same as the Auenfeldjet in Lech/Schröcken. But here the upper section is mixed and the Lower Section only has Gondolas and is only used as connection.

    Copper's my home mountain. I would say the gondola side of American Eagle is most popular with people who just arrived and want to get up the mountain in a hurry. Once you have your skis or board on your feet the chair is the preferred option.

    Hybrid lifts (chair and gondola) are not that uncommon. Their marketing names are Telemix (Poma) and Telecombi (Doppelmayr).

    Nice bunch of lifts, but the explanation is not always correct:
    - First Rotair was not in Engelberg but in Cape Town on the Table Mountain.
    - Peak 2 Peak is not based on a lift in Zermatt but on the lift '3S' in Kitzbuhel of which it is nearly an exact copy.
    - The Cabrio in Tignes was not the first one. The first one of this kind was on the Standerhorn in Switserland.

    Samnaun (Ch) also has double decker cable car. In Zermatt, there is also train that connects Zermatt and one peak, Gorergrat - Gornergratt bahnn. Also, in Zermatt there is underground train/funicular that connects Zermatt and Sunnegga peak. Also, in Zermatt there is mix of gondola and chairs.

    The sauna lift is pretty cool if it is just one single gondola, the hybrid system at the end is kinda needless though, quite a few chairlifts can have screens fitted to them to protect you from the elements if needed. Just seems like the queuing system for them would lead to quite a few empty seats, that would grate on people quickly!

    • @JaimyLee33
      @JaimyLee33 Рік тому +2

      The way they use the hybrid system in Austria is very usefull. Skiers can take the chairs without taking of their skies and walk, where ski classes of little children can stay together and take a single gondola. This way the teacher doesn't have to 'hand out' children one by one to other people at the chairlift. The lines for chairs and gondolas are separated.

      @joneinarmattiasvisser6113 Рік тому

      There is another benefit: people without skis! On some mountains you want to go winter walking, or sledding/luge (rodeln).
      It would be way easyer to go inside a gondola if you are not wearing any skis, or especially if you have a sledge, that thing doesn't fit on a chair.
      Also kids are sometimes too small to sit down on the chairlift normally, and parents need to pick them up onto the chair. They can slide off, it's just not a good experience. Thus, the hybrid is really good. Hybrids are used in places where a traditional chairlift would be the option to choose, but either a lot of people on foot or ski klasses can use them, and also hadicapped people can use them easyer...
      Well it makes sense to do so in certain situations, where I live in Austria they recently built one. The lift always had to slow down almost to no speed at all if someone without ski's wanted to go up, which is bad. It was an old chairlift with a belt as opposed to the chair slowing down.
      Having said that they are really usefull
      EDIT: I know of 2 lifts in my area that are hybrid, both in really usefull places!

    I don't think it's a good idea to focus on the States and Switzerland while completely ignoring Austria.
    Ischgl/AT + Samnau/CH form the best developed ski area in the world and not even the gigantic Pardatschgratbahn is worth a mention.
    The Galzigbahn + the Schindlergratbahn in St. Anton, the 3K in Kaprun, the Gaislachkolgelbahnen in Sölden, the Gletschbus 1-3 would have been worth mentioning, as well as many others.
    But the worst:
    How could anyone miss the two hottest lifts in Chamonix?
    Télécabine Panoramic Mont-Blanc and the cable car up the Aiguille du Midi?

    That "Matterhorn Glacier ride" is not correct designation - the Matterhorn Glacier is not far away, but not at what for marketing purpose is called "Matterhorn Glacier Paradise" that in fact is "Klein Matterhorn" = "Small Matterhorn". Might have been worth mentioning that from July 2023 on, Klein Matterhorn (Marketing designation "Matterhorn Glacier Paradise") will be connected to Testa Grigia on the Swiss-Italian border for all year access from Zermatt mountain area to Breuil-Cervinia on the Italian side. That up to now was only possible on skis.
    Other mistake is Titlis - the "Titlis Rotair gondola" is not leading to Mount Titlis, but only to "Klein Titlis" = "Small Titlis". Marketing staff prefers to use "Titlis" that is the peak at a half kilometre behind Klein Titlis.
