    Hey! I'd like to clarify a few things. A few errors/miscommunications: 1. You can be more than three essences 2. Kibbe does include style essences in his system, but he "pre-selects" them for you, and Kitchener and Kibbe still view their essences differently even though they both use yin/yang 3. I suggested using black and white photos- which I think can be helpful to see your facial shapes and overall impression (like casting agents typically use these style photos to help discern a "vibe"), but color is a fundamental aspect of kitcheners system and one b/w photo alone will not confirm your essence. 4. I don't consider myself a guru; I like to view this as a community exploration (me being part of that community!)... so if I ever get something wrong or you feel it's not representative, then leave a comment and we can learn and explore together

      McJimsey is the OG, and if you were around before the 80s, you definitely knew about her. Because Kibbe updated styling for the 80s made his system more popular at the time. Pillbox hats and poodle skirts were the designs of McJimseys day, as were shoulder pads and double breastfed suits the style of Kibbes original book. The difference is that because Kibbe has remained a stylist through the current time, and updated his suggestions to fit the current style, thus making him more known. That, and millenials have discovered his work. He is on social media, still helping people find their confidence through fashion, and that's awesome.

  • @ariesmry
    @ariesmry 2 роки тому +681

    I think your essence is natural dominant. I loved you in the natural outfits and when I saw your face at 8:05 next to the other natural examples, I feel like there’s a lot more similarities in features and bone structure with these examples, than with the romantic.
    You have this kinda “undone” quality about you where you could roll out of bed, throw your hair in a messy bun, throw on jeans and a T-shirt and it would look GOOD and kinda like off-duty model style, where others would look like… they rolled out of bed. Even as I look through your other videos, this relaxed hairstyle you have in this video looks more cohesive than the more done hairstyles.
    I also think the source of your yin is from an ingenue essence- the high contrast, the flushness of the skin, and the full lips. Without seeing your body, you look like you could pull off vintage styles and patterns, like the dress to the left on 11:29. There’s a little bit of a delicateness in your frame that makes me think that your more yin leaning outfits would look good in this essence.
    You remind me of a young Liv Tyler- I think she dressed her essence when she was young, rather than the “more polished,” darker image she has now.
    Either way- loved the video and the explanation. I definitely agree that dressing for your face and essence helps to bring more cohesiveness to one’s style

      This is such a thorough and kind response, and honestly, you've got me thinking! It can be hard to see ourselves sometimes, so I will definitely consider this, maybe I'll play more with ingenue and report back. THANK YOU! And I've gotten liv Tyler before, I think she was originally a pure natural in kibbe before he removed that category and I always felt most in line with that ID slightly more than FN, but maybe it's because of her essence that I relate!

    Kibbe has provided tremendous insights, but the system clearly has it's limits. I am a Kibbe Soft Classic but always found something's missing. It was the ethereal essence. Classic romantic ethereal feels much more right for me. I have been compared to Kate Winslet who is a Kibbe verified Romantic, but have always seen something classic, regal about her, especially in her face. It's probably her secondary, classic essence which has become more prominent in recent years.

    I’m a 43 year old gamine from what I see. I’ve been trying to do a “capsule wardrobe “ and so far it is disastrous! I’m not into neutrals AT ALL! I want colours, patterns and FUN! So I realized that I want is a wardrobe that has my own personal basics. So instead of a plain white button down shirt, I’ll get one with polka dots or stripes. I’m trying to narrow down my choices and streamline my closet.
    It’s hard to style yourself as you get older.

    • @Gabriellearrudadesign
      @Gabriellearrudadesign  2 роки тому +28

      This is totally spot on! Neutral pieces will shift for each person, and finding your own “basic tee” can help a more gamine capsule wardrobe stay balanced

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 Рік тому +3

      Why would you worry about wearing a lot of neutrals? I don't see that as necessary for gamine at all. From The Concept Wardrobe: "What is the Gamine Style Essence? The gamine style essence is the combination of yang and playful theatricality, also known as the playfully dramatic yang essence. Consequently, individuals with the gamine style essence tend to create an overall visual impression of rebelliousness and playful boldness."

    I have no idea what essence I have😳 I find it so difficult to separate what I was told (all my life) growing up from the actual grown up me- like how many of us were told to wear a lot of concealer to hide our imperfect skin, to only choose dark colored bottoms in order to tone down our curves or to get more volume in our hair at any cost etc. All those advice were like hide hide hide instead of shine shine shine. Weird thing is that I still always feel more ”ugly” with bare skin and in sleek hair -but does voluminous fluffy hair even suite me? Do I look better in something completly different?🧐

    • @Gabriellearrudadesign
      @Gabriellearrudadesign  2 роки тому +59

      I totally get where you are coming from. And that advice to change yourself and conform/hide is totally toxic. I think taking photos and videos of your outfits can help. Noting which outfits really just make you feel good and when you look back on your outfits you can have a better perspective to judge whether you are loving it and whether its authentically you or not. But it can take awhile to implement. I find as I adopt a new element to my personal style to enjoy the experimenting but also look back on it and see if its a passing fad or something that really speaks to me. Ultimately, all of this, should make you feel good and SHINE, if it's not doing that I say you leave it!

      I hated the style help for short girls. Wear one color head to toe. Wear heels always. Lucky me for being born a little rebellious. Plus I ended up marrying a man who is a foot and a half taller than me. I will never look tall or even average with him. I will always look tiny. I’m 5’1’ so I’m actually a little short but next to him I look itty bitty. You could get together with your bestie and play dress up for a weekend. Like when we were 13 and trying to figure it all out with magazines. The internet has allowed a broader expression of what is beautiful. When we know better we do better. This was so helpful. I really like the Kibbe method and boy has it helped me figure out why clothes suit or do not suit me and has transformed my wardrobe into something that makes me feel confident and happy. But there was always some tension because while I’m definitely more on the flamboyant natural side, something about how kibbe describes them and what suits them just didn’t resonate. There is a hint of the dramatic in me but what I kept coming back to were things that fell more into line with a classic. Watching your videos on essences I’ve realized why it is I’m drawn to some dramatic pieces but always always need to temper my outfits so they are balanced. Anyhow, it all makes so much more sense to me now. I’m getting better and better in identifying what a piece needs to have for it to work for me which makes shopping so much easier, impulse buys a thing of the past, and a wardrobe that inspires me. It’s freedom, really 😊

    I've got a true autumn color palette. I didn't know Kibbe had removed faces. When I typed myself some years ago, I landed on classic, though I wasn't sure which variety. The way you just described the essence for classics was so spot in for me, and one reason why I thought classic was accurate. But I recently looked into it again and classic just didn't seem right. Aha! Soft natural! But some of the soft natural clothing suggestions (just getting started) aren't right. Bingo. Thanks for saying that many of us were accidentally typed as classics,due to classic essence! Now I've got more info for this deep dive. 💪 One reason I've struggled so much with the classic diagnosis is that my mom and I are so similar and she definitely isn't a classic. I thought she was probably a natural of some kind. Unfortunately, example photos are almost always celebrities, non overweight people, fit people, heavy makeup, high maintenance and dyed hair, and fashion clothes. No everyday wear, no clothes you could just get at Target or wherever, no one with little to no makeup, undyed and non curled hair, any weight gain or post baby bodies, etc. It just makes it so much harder to figure out.

    Nice video. I've had my essences done by Kitchener himself, and I have all 7 essences. It's rare but it is possible to have more than 3 or 4. I am dominating Angelic, and I am so happy Kitchener includes Angelic/Ethereal in his system. It was what was missing for me. Nothing else looked right and it was frustrating. Essences are key in my opinion.
    Tip on Angelic Essence... Sheer andLlightweight fabrics are key. Some of your examples were too heavy in the video. The Weight of an outfits overall look is very important to an Angelic. Too heavy, even if the lines are right will create a disconnect.

    • @lilaeia
      @lilaeia 2 роки тому

      Hi Joy! I have also had my essences done professionally by a Kitchener Consultant… and I came up as four types, with 50% Ethereal and 20% Ingenue. You can imagine how out of place I felt in the Kibbe system when my constitution is 70% not included in his system!!! In the Kibbe system I’m Romantic, and although that accounts for 20% of my constitution in Kitchener, it shows very differently as a small part of a larger picture, than it would being the complete picture. I don’t have that sexy, sensual aspect. The short visual lines, the large roundedness, the overt womanliness and the lushness are all wrong. The long visual lines of the Ethereal, the wispiness and otherworldliness, the weightlessness and the barely-there colours are the perfect fit. So like you, I found the essences to be the key… the missing piece that Kibbe omitted. And although the Ethereal essence was added around the time of Kibbe’s book, Kitchener’s system was developed 20 years prior to Kibbe, so Kibbe actually chose to omit, rather than failed to see, the Ingenue and later the Ethereal. Each to their own of course. He then removed pure Classic, Gamine and Natural categories and that leaves MANY people unaccounted for, shuffled into a flanking Kibbegory. To me, that was a step further in the wrong direction… omitting more people, rather than broadening and including more diversity.
      IMHO, we are too multifaceted to ever fit into just one type. Kibbe’s system accounts for combinations of only 1 or 2 at most, instead of 3-4 and in your case even more!!! I feel that he has limited the multifacetedness of our lovely Being as a result. Whilst Kitchener focuses more on the overall vibe of someone’s energy, lines are still included. So the argument Kibbe enthusiasts make that there’s no place for Ethereal, Romantic covers it all, simply doesn’t hold true. The notion that pure yin has to be short visual lines, short height and very rounded shapes isn’t the case. And if you put a Romantic in the weightlessness of the Ethereal styles, something seems slightly off. They need that little bit of luxuriousness. Long and slender lines that are weightless and flowing, with waist emphasis but NOT demarcation (as in belts etc so often recommended for Romantics), is quite the opposite. And yet too yin for Dramatics (who otherwise have the long and slender lines, but stiff and straight). So where does that leave the tall, willowy, wispy types? Kibbe would say they are too tall to be Romantics, and yet they are too wispy and rounded (as opposed to angular) to be Dramatics. Like Lily Cole.
      For you and me and anyone else in our boat, we would be left unrepresented without Kitchener’s inclusion of the Ethereal. I originally began with Kibbe and then found Kitchener, and having been down both rabbit holes, Kitchener’s system is complete in and of itself. It overlaps in many ways with Kibbe - and takes everything a step further. Combinations of essences, more personalised colours than the seasonal colour system allows, and looking at percentages of essences rather than just a simple combination of two. For example, even if someone were a Soft Classic (Classic-Romantic in Kitchener)… who’s to say they are equal parts of both? What if they are 80% Classic and only 20% Romantic? Dressing 50% Romantic would be overwhelmingly sexy for them. For those who have started with Kibbe, Kitchener is the next evolutionary step. For those who haven’t started with Kibbe, it really isn’t necessary to do so prior to embarking on the Kitchener journey. Everything is included within the Kitchener system, without needing a companion system to pad out any blanks!
      🤗💖😇

When I use the 3 word method I find it also helps to sometimes delineate the three words for "business setting" and for "casual setting" and see the main word or style adjectives that overlap and if there is no overlap then understanding your wardrobe might have two separate identities, can help you audit it more effectively!

    thank you for including childhood photos to this video! I agree it helps A LOT. my Kibbe journey was very rough since I have very broad shoulders and a huge head lol so not a very strong vertical and for 5 years I thought I was a natural because of that. but in my whole life of 21 years I NEVER looked good in athletic, sporty or casual lines. I thought I had the ugliest body since even a plain black t-shirt with black shorts looked AWFUL. Me and my mom would go out shopping and everything she chose looked terrible on me. turns out, we were struggling because I was a SD child with a masculine, serious essence (idk what it is exactly) and she was a SN with gamine essence. what started that break through of realizing im a SD was looking back at my childhood photos and ignoring body shape and just focusing on the impression I made. Even as a child I always looked mature for my age. I was always the longest in my class and that didn't made me look like a model, sporty or powerful/mascular at all, I just looked older. Not feminine, sexy or womanly just big, broad and grown up. I looked pretty awful in school uniform however I shined at our schools annual balls in satin dresses with fake Swarovski crystals as jewelry, even when I was just 7. I would wear makeup almost everyday when I was around 4-7 and it was just my thing back then, nobody could stop me. so I strongly disagree it is impossible to type someone until 25, the type and essence makes itself seen even in childhood.

    stumbled upon this video by accident and it's my introduction to this system and i love it!
    thank you for explaining it so well even to someone who never heard of it before in an understandable way. However i gotta agree with my fellow commentators below, rather than romantic i see the ingenue as well! it looks lovely on you. But yes natural definitely is the strongest essence of them all, all outfits look great and straight out of a magazine on you :)

      Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to explore ingenue since it seems like such a common pick! And I'm glad you found the video helpful!

    I would say mostly Natural, 10-25% Ethereal and a touch of Classic.
    For example, the first outfit in Dramatic is more ethereal/classic and looks fantastic on you. Really brings out your Liv Tyler/Arwen features. The first and fourth natural outfits look so “natural” on you. The classic outfits looked so classy and chic on you but I think not as youthful and playful as you like. And the first ethereal dress was giving Diana vibes 💗 beautiful

    Ha wow, so much dissent! I would say Classic, Natural, Ingenue. In that order. To me, you looked the most comfortable and at-home wearing those looks.

      Yes- I think ppl are starting to agree more though after they watch the deep dives. The ingenue deep dive is out and I think it cleared up a lot 🙃

    I really think ingenue and dramatic suits you so well! You are wearing this dress right now and I was like, "this fits her essence so well." And this dress is very ingenue. ✨️💖

    This makes so much sense! I first identified myself as Kibbe Theatrical Romantic, since my body is curvy and I have big round eyes and full lips, however, I am quite tall and not all the characteristics would suit me. Then I discovered I am Soft Classic (which made sense since I saw one chart that showed TR and SC quite close to each other). Now I know that even though I am Soft Classic according to Kibbe, I definitely have Romantic essence... ever since I remember people would always tell me I look sexy, even though I would wear pretty normal clothing. Thank you very much for this video!

    To me you harmonised the best with romantic, ethereal and a little bit of dramatic essence, the yin ones seemed to go seamlessly with you. I'm still a beginner at recognising essences but yeah 👐

    Thanks to you I've realised that I'm about 50% Ingenue, 30% Gamine and 20% Romantic. Amazing and so so helpful!

    Gabrielle, I'd love a video on more mature women and essences. To see how each of the essences play out with lived in skin, character lines and desaturated hair colour.

    Also yes to the individual videos. I would love to see some thing like Romantic essence across the kibbe spectrum. So how a R/G/Eessence would translate on a D or N etc.

    Love the essence element to kibbe! I'm a theatrical dramatic, but it is not my essence (but yeah all red looks amazing on me). You're so not a gamine essence haha! I saw you in those outfits and I was like wow those are doing you NO justice. You started in a dramatic and I wrote down yes - but only a little! When you did romantic I was like YES and HEAVY, ha! I thought natural was just OK on you, and that ingenue actually worked well on you, but I was CLOSE!!! So I think you're def onto something here. Agreed about the white shirt/red skirt combo.
    Mostly coming here to say though that I LOVE your nose! I can't quite explain it but the whole time I was watching this I was like her nose is literally so perfect on her. It makes your whole face mesmerizing in both a powerful (dramatic) but like soft feminine way. I can't explain it other than to say its like this perfect blend of masculine/feminine. It just WORKS.
