Toyota avensis drivers enjoy reliability and comfort I personally am not concerned by the plain interior as long has everything works if you want a fast car look elsewhere
Does anybody else suspect he's been driving the car with the handbrake on?
It's not that the car is bad it just that you can't drive very well....I test drove one the other day a 2-0 litre one and it was great.... handled well good solid build inside and out...if your going to start reviewing cars please start doing it properly....
so the avensis is slow is it, 148BHP and 0-60 in9.7 secs is not slow you just carnt drive it right, i bet the car needed a new clutch after the test drive

I own this car and drove to the continent 3000 miles on the motorways and it has zero torque

Who is this man? He seems pretty incompetent. This whole test on the car is nothing more than a joke, and I can not believe who gets something out of it - laughable! He does not have any track on the motor or designed - nor does he understand comparing the car in its proper contexts - repeat, do it right - or better - change jobs (I think I saw him as a postman in my neighborhood - he sucks on distribute mail too) !!
I have never seen such a biased review total tosh,If any one wants to know how good these cars are then speak one of the many satisfied owners and dont be put off by this know nothing know all.
The one I have is so under powered it tows a caravan with ease.
This man definitely not a candidate for top gear lol

This engine has good power. I have one and it's great
It's a bit like throwing on shabby jogging outfit, if your not to bothered about looks, and happy with mediocre living standards " the Avensis is for you "
the European cars they have better interior better look from Japanese cars but the Japanese cars they are cars with out problems and i will buy one Avensis for taxi.
Before i had Mercedes and Peugeot and i stay out of work because that cars they are shit cars.
True i had skoda same problem every second week go to mechanic now i have toyota for two years no problem overall five star
These cars are overall better the Nissan and any new car, and if the 1.8 isn't for your then get the 2.0d4d or even 2.2d4d those are powerful models of avensis. And yes the plastics are abit cheap, toyota should've used better qulity meterials, and yes the 1st and 2nd gen of the avensis were the best we had both of them in my fmaily, my uncle had 2001 toyota avensis 2.0 d4d and that car had over 400k miles, becaue previous owner had it as minicab, and that car was strong as hell we towed 3 mobile homes with that car and the car never gave up. And now my dad has toyota avensis 2007 2.2 d4d, and that has 170bhp which pulls the car like train. And it's the top spec. Yeh I like the older ones alot more, and that's same for other cars new cars are getting cheaper in qulity day by day, as the new avasis is so crap it's even worse then this one.
I did have a giggle when you stalled it. Otherwise nice review.

I own this car and it is dangerously slow
Reliable transportation--that's about all you can say about Toyotas. Otherwise, boring and cheap. I'll stay with my Volvos.
But with Volvo you get an unreliable AND boring car…
That is like saying Macdonalds do the best burgers as they have the largets amount of food outlets in the world...actually I think their burgers are total cr*p.
