Looked at a car once and it had no oil, or at least so little oil it didn’t reach the dipstick, when I asked when it was last serviced she said it was MOTd a few months ago, i guess she thought an mot was a service? Anyways it hadn’t had an oil change in 7 years and 55k miles since she had pilfered the car off her ex husband. Strange none of the 7 mot’s checked the oil but I suppose that’s not really necessary if it’s been serviced like it’s supposed to.
Safe to say we didn’t buy it. 😂
@@Aron-ru5zk If it wasn't for me my wife's car would be in a similar position. As it stands it's a testiment to Honda reliability that it's still driveable after 6 years of her abuse and neglect.

lady owner= no oil changes, curbed wheels, burnt out clutch, hasn't been cleaned in ever, bald tyres. Honesty so many cars that I see that are old lady owned I have massive respect for as I think how tf are you still running

I owned a a avensis before I earned a bit more money than I do now.
I hated it at first but it was so reliable and so trustworthy that I grew to respect it and eventually love it.
Just when I thought something was going wrong with it it seemed to heal itself.
It was like an old mule!
how could you hate this car? Not enough power or looks? I think it is a perfect car, looks decent and power is very good compromise between consumption and the possibility to accelerate rather quickly when needed

My father had the predecessor Toyota Carina E 1.6 petrol. 500k km in 25 years and not even one failure. I cried when we sent that car for scrapping.
I saw a 1994 Carina today. The saloon one which I always preferred. It was an old Asian guy driving it and it was absolutely mint!
GB sticker on the back, beaded seat covers, elaborately coloured tissue box on the parcel shelf and one of those anti static strips that drag along the ground that everyone had back in the day.
It was still wearing it's Toyota wheeltrims. It was spectacular.
Remember, this is Central London and most cars are knackered in a few years.

My dad worked at the factory which made a bunch of the suspension components for those.
In England they all went to the scrap probably because they owner wanted something cheaper to run or nicer or rust got them. You do see them knocking about in the South West of the United States where there is no rust and I assume if you went to poorer parts of Spain, Italy and Portugal you might find a few.
I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla Sportif, I'm currently restoring it as it was the family car for many years. There's still plenty of life in the old girl yet! 😂

I'ts a shame as I absolutely love that car as it looks and drives very good and is the last reliable Nissan ever also it's easy to work on and has a timing chain. Although they do rust badly

I’ve actually seen this, when I was shopping for my first car I went to look at one and it had no oil, or at least so little it didn’t show up on the dip stick, hadn’t had an oil change in 7 years and 55k miles 😂
Just bought an old V40 as a runaround, wish I'd seen this I'd have given you an offer bud. On a side note, I always wear a wig and high heels when I sell my cars, tends to put people at ease.
V40s are great I drove one for 8 years and it has 340 000 km on the clock now. Never had a single issue. I bought an S60 since but I'd never sell the v40, still use it as a work horse
If that car was here in Ireland I could sell it 5 times over ! These Avensis are absolute royalty here! There is a taxi in Galway with 570k miles on it ! Up until lockdown it was happily ferrying drunk vomiting battlescarred youth !

In 2003, the Avensis also became the first vehicle sold in Europe with a knee airbag. Its big, cheap, reliable, low insurance group, its perfect new driver car ;)
Whenever I read the 'one careful lady owner ' guff, the same two words always enter my mind ' - Doris Schumacher, whose sons and grandsons get to use it at weekends, while she's crocheting a quilt.
There was a Dutch VW advert which played out a bit like that, father and son go looking at an old Golf and this little old lady shows it to them, while they're walking around it it's cutting to the old lady hooning it around everywhere

The fact that it hasn't been looked after is no fault of the Avensis. Have it valeted, waxed and polished and repair the dodgy bits and it'll be a nice car. Even better don't let your car get in this state in the first place. I'd feel confident driving from Cornwall to Scotland in this. I can't say the same about a similar Citroen, BMW or Fiat etc.

This car is bullet proof as you have actually shown. A Landrover, Ford, Fiat, Alpha, Renault, Citroen etc. would have died many years ago.
If you literally just need "An Car" then really it's going to do most things you need it to do, I drove an ex-taxi one with just shy of 500,000 miles on it, and I'm not going to say it drove like new, but it still started first time every time and never felt like it was on the verge of packing in, woefully boring to drive but excitement is not really what they're for.

@@dan_6915 Agreed, never saw the fuss about not buying an ex-taxi. Sure they have mega miles and tatty interior but taxi drivers choose reliable long-lived cars and look after what matters, so for a workhorse they're great. I've had a 406 2.1TD with 280k and a Volvo s80 with similar, both were supremely reliable for very little cash.
A very under appreciated car, built here in Derbyshire at Burnaston. May not have set the motoring world on fire but did herald many leading safety features in its time. All Avensis models sported 9 airbags including a drivers knee airbag when many U.K. competitors made do with 4 airbags. They are often written up as being monotonous or boring to drive but they are massively reliable. We had an 04 tourer , 2.0 d4d only 114bhp, the previous model to this 125bhp, with a 5 speed manual. It was written off last year by an unmarked police car which ran a red light... at the time it was at 174k miles and was still a great car. It regularly returned 60mpg and towed a variety of trailers and a caravan over the years with no bother. In all the time we ran it often doing 104 miles a day commute, carrying full loads from cash and carry, it never let us down. It did require a new clutch and dual mass flywheel at 140k but it had been worked very hard by then. Also had one starter motor and two front coil springs. Apart from regular servicing and brakes and tyres, that was it! We also ran a Mondeo 2.2tdci estate for a couple of years, and although faster with 155bhp, it was far less reliable, less comfortable, creaked and whined a lot more and had more parts replaced in far less miles than the Avensis. I’d happily have another one tomorrow!

I always drive totally depreciated cars as dailies. It's not only economical, it is also green - if you look beyond just emissions. A recent German study again proved this. A 2007 Avensis diesel with just 130K miles on it? Seems an interesting car to me, pity I do not live in the UK. You will be surprised how well it will look after a good scrub and polish... I have 'rescued' many comparable cars over the years.
T25 looks mature and elegant. Why people say it is boring ? Anything that is not german is ugly to them (Golf honestly sucks as design to me).

We've got a 2007 1.8VVTi petrol and it's the best car I've ever owned. It's just so reliable. Only thing that's broken in three years is a sun visor 👍
I want to buy one for me as a beginner. I am 19. Would you advice me to buy one? How reliable it is? Is interior durable ? Is it fun or boring to drive? Is it relatively cheap to run?
@@alexandrudorobantu6845 I'd recommend a post 2006 1.8 petrol. Pre 2006 had oil consumption problems. The 1.8 is nice to drive and gets 40mpg.
They're very reliable and the interior is durable. Apparently the thing that kills them is rear subframe rust but our 2007 has no signs of it so far. Good luck!

Our friends have ferried us around in their Avensis many a time. Does exactly what it says on the tin! Totally fuss free and comfortable and works . What’s not to like.
You realise we now expect a parody episode where you bring this to Edd China, he fixes two trim bits and pronounces the engine perfect, and you sell it for £1 to a local refugee named Lawrie or donate it to charity in the countryside or something. Nice cameo!

I'm type 1 diabetic and as a result it took me just under two years to get my provisional application and medical questions out the way, now I'm finally learning to drive at the age of 19 and need something I can be abit rough with, any possibility of helping me out? Is that paint even correctable? Looks like it would need a respray. Then you'd need a 2AZ-FSE engine swap, which also requires swapping the gauge cluster, and the entire fuel system...
@@richardharrold9736 yes the paint is definitely correctable apart from maybe the scuffs on the bumper, depending on how deep they are that might need to be repainted but the car overall is easily corrected. As for changing the engine? I’m not sure that’s even necessary lol, it is what it is why would you even bother.

@@richardharrold9736 I’m not answering if there’s a point of doing it I’m answering that yes it could be done quite easily *if* somebody wanted to do it, it’s possible to bring that car right back, you sounded unsure if it even could be done suggesting a respray and I’m telling you that a respray wouldn’t be necessary at all.
As for putting a hot engine in it, maybe? If somebody really wanted to do it then why not each to their own but there’s much better cheap Toyota candidates for a hot engine than the Avensis in my opinion. Even if somebody somehow put a 2j in it all I’d think is “cool but what a waste of a 2j”.
If somebody bought it for very little money and wanted a nice clean commuter I’d have it paint corrected or do it myself, refurb the alloys and boom there you have a tidy car to get you to and from work for the next 10 years without major issue potentially and for very little money.
@@MrSteveo114 2JZ wouldn't fit in a transverse engine FWD chassis, 2AZ did come in the Avensis and a lot else, and is well supported for performance parts. 10 years? This thing will be banned from the roads by then.
The truth: A ‘normal’ car. Parents had an Avensis of same engine, age and colour but estate. Perfectly reliable and cheap motoring if getting from A to B at 50mpg is the priority. You speak very much the truth here.
Fair play to the owner. At least they've not typically thrown it away as soon as it got a puncture like most of the chuck away society we live in now. That car serves a purpose and probably costs them next to nothing.
Main point about a car as a mode of transport is reliability and these machines start day or night come rain or shine, gotta love Toyotas for the simple ruggedness engineering
160k 2.2 dcat T180 estate and it has been the best car I've owned. Comfortable, solid and plenty of space especially in the perfectly flat load area when the split year seats are folded down. It has a fifth injector whose job is to squirt diesel into the exhaust to clean the dpf. And I have long since mastered removing and cleaning the egr.Thoroughly recommended.

Had one for 3 years and did 110k in it. Fault free and over 50 mpg even though driven like an arse.... zero character but I loved it nonetheless. Fantastic reliable transport and virtually bombproof. People have such unrealistic views of what makes a good car these days... UA-cam has destroyed our real world expectations....a little like Pornhub 😏

I have an 06 plate 1.8vvti lift back avensis, bought it reluctantly due to lack of funds, 1 year later, it's earnt my respect, amazing turning circle for a big car, reliable, good leg room front and back, good ground clearance, good fuel economy, basically a reliable workhorse, if you look after it.
1.8 vttli are you sure ? This is a TS engine made for sporty versions of corolla and celica

@@zak6931 I am a fleet manager for a large pharmaceutical company with almost 600 cars in our fleet.
This includes approximately 80 Toyota's of various models.
They are generally reliable but not nearly as bullet proof as urban legend suggests.
There has also been a definite decline in there quality since 2007 or so.
I'll happily take it off your hands! Cars like this make perfect sense to do big miles in, and I've seen plenty worse out there 😂 it would also make this my first car which would be nice
I'm 55 years old. No mortgage or rent, no debt, in full-time employment. I could borrow money to buy a new car or I could lease (i.e. Rent) but instead I run an 11 year old Mazda. I paid cash for it & I keep it in immaculate condition. My annual running cost is less than many people's monthly lease bill. I may not look as wealthy as you at the traffic lights but as we alll know, looks can be deceptive. Choose your path through life wisely.
I had the T-Spirit saloon for a couple of years. I added over 40000 miles to it within those years. Very reliable and quite comfortable too. Didn't come close to being exciting to drive, just dependable.

I have had a 2008 estate version from new, it has now done 176,000 miles and has been astoundingly cheap to run, other than oil, filter, tyres, new pads and discs it has had very little spent on it - two new wheel bearings and an air conditioning compressor.
It is boring but very reliable - and as the family workhorse boring reliability is exactly what I want.
Let's not underestimate the Avensis drivers, could be someone who needs a runaround, a taxi or Warren Buffett

I have an Avensis like this as a work runner. Excellent cheap daily motoring, they're built like tanks.

Modern cars are turning in to the latest smartphone. Buy one on PCP swap it for a newer model after 4 years.
My other half bought one last year. 58 plate. One owner and only 71,000 miles done. Its now being used to travel from the middle of England to Wales twice a week. I feel so safe in it. First car I've been in for a while where safety is fully covered. I've heard they are boring but reliable. Had it serviced recently and the only thing needed done was a new battery and it may need tracking done. Its 1000x better than the Skoda we had that set its self on fire 😂
Superb ergonomics in this car it is comfortable and you feel safe which makes you drive better . The designers need more accolades.welldone.
I really love these kind of cars. Just went from a Subaru Forester SF to a V70 I, cheap, worry free cars. If something's too expensive to fix, you go to the next one. If there's a scratch, there's a scratch.

Even my „good“ car is kinda banged up on the outside. Will get a paint job at some point, but it’s fun this way, too.
Scratches? I've never washed any of my bangers so I've got no idea as to the state of the paintwork under the dirt
I daily a 1997 1.6 ford laser (pretty much a mazda 323) and have been for the past 200,000 k's. Love it. Not a care about where I leave it, who bangs the door, or if I run over a pothole. Paid less than $1000 for it, and never had an issue. Everyone needs a banger!
I ran a T4 2 litre petrol tourer about 12 years ago and it was utterly reliable over 40k miles and felt unbreakable. I actually really liked that old barge.
Like he mentioned in the video, the petrol engines are the good ones.
I inherited one of these as my second car in 2014, it was a 2004 plate with 6000 miles on the clock. Car would have probably lasted me a lifetime but you can imagine how it feels to be 17, rocking up everywhere in one of these things. I had to always keep my doors locked as on 2 occasions people got into the back thinking I was a taxi.
Happened to me once when I dropped a friend off at the station then 2 fools tried to jump in the back of the car. Impolitely I told them to take the Bus..

I've owned a 2009 plate Avensis 1.8 petrol engine. The car does 39 mpg on average, never let me down. Good car.

I confess that whilst I maybe a petrolhead and an R8 owner that often seeks out ‘performance reviews’ I found this review utterly charming. It represented a super ‘moment in time’ and real world perspective. What a lovely story. Great video, genuinely found this refreshingly different. :)
Used to have one on an 05 plate. Solid motor, utterly reliable. Sold it to a mate, only because we aquired another (newer) car from a family member. It's still going strong after a mere 106k miles. These things can go for years & years if well maintained.
Did your car have the standard stereo? Worst thing I can say about my 2005 Avensis is the radio was rubbish, it would literally pickup about 4/5 stations, 4 of which were like classical, and one was radio one, which I was absolutely bored to tears of, in the end I upgraded to a Bluetooth DAB radio, with those windscreen mounted stick on aerials, now I can get loads of radio stations.
I think it’s to do with the aerial in the rear window, the lines get damaged over the years, or people put stickers on them, then peel them off which damages the aerial. Had a 2001 BMW 3 series that was the same

Because it was an Avensis I didn't watch the video. I listened to it instead , and it really made me laugh. And what Jayemm said toward the end made perfect sense. Why worry about monthly payments on a brand new car when you can have an old cheap one that generally works just fine and does what you need it to do. Sure, new is nice but if you live in a busy city, it won't stay nice for very long.
Even in the country it makes sense. My parents still use a 1998 Fiesta they bought for £400 7 years ago. It's probably had no more than £300 spent on it since then, and it is a much older, cheaper car than the Avensis in the video. That's still less than a monthly payment on a lot of new cars. I think its even still on the original cambelt. Maybe I'll change it in the summer.
It mostly gets used as a pickup truck, it's carried completely illegal amounts of lumber till it was on the bumpstops, been completely packed inside and on the roof multiple times, survived being hit by a HGV in such a way that would have killed most cars... it'll be a shame when it finally gives up. At this rate it's a race between the rust and the CVT box, but I think it has at least another year or two. We've been saying that for a fair few years though, so who knows.

Hi jay, I used to build these bad boys at the plant near Derby. (Burnaston). As I'm sure you're aware of Toyotas viewpoint on build quality, I reckon the biggest issue with it will be the age of it. I actually won a lift back in the company lottery scheme and as a young (26) operator it didn't interest me at all. I owned a Toyota Corolla T Sport (189bhp)and managed to sell the Avensis with 17 miles on the clock for a reasonable price which I used as a deposit to reduce my monthly mortgage payments. @@Electricdreams21 In my experience of the industry (mostly in sales and around body shops, and mostly with Ford), it's not at all a common thing in the industry as a whole (certainly not in the UK anyway) but Toyota do everything a little differently so it wouldn't surprise me if it's standard practice for them.
What was the Corrolla T sport like to drive and own. At the time Was looking for those cars but they were quite rare and some looked a bit tatty.
That's always the problem.
I've got a (free!) 1987 Citroen BX. Surpringly it still runs excellently, engine and gearbox could go for another 30 years. However the bodyshell is swiss cheese in multiple areas, hydraulic pipes are in need of replacement too. Unless I can get that fixed for not stupid money, it'll be the death of it. The years really took their toll, the mileage hasn't.
2007 is still pretty young though, and metal protection was much better then than in the 1980s, so I'm sure it's still got loads of life left in it. A bit of prevention will go a long way.

If the measure of a good car, is how well it does the job it was designed to do, then the (petrol) Avensis must be right up there.
I agree. The Avensis was designed to be a car not a trinket to impress strangers with.
These Avensis's were like the Beetle or Cortina in Ireland, nearly every farm in the country had one or two of them at the time.

Know a couple of these bumbling around with 350k miles and MOTs but a distant memory. you get away with a lot out in the middle of nowhere lol
Avensis were a conglomerate of both Japanese and european design. Owned a 2004 2.0 wagon with 270.000 kms. Drove beautifully. Great on long trips. No issues at all other than a knocking suspension link. $80 to fix

Avensis are like your first love. Not the best ride but reliable enough to get the job done.
In Kiwiland these are imported with a 2.4 petrol motor and usually in station wagon form. They're everywhere. My mate bought a mint one for $6500 NZD (that's about 50p in your money...and we still don't know why) with about 60K kms on it (kms are are new method of measuring distance...thought only the US of A hadn't caught on yet...). It's a great car...roomy as, plenty of poke, in wagon form they look ok, and for 50p quite a bargain. NZ is a bit like Cuba. We buy imported. We keep. Until they die. Or we do.
Think the true difference between a car enthusiast and someone who just like cars is exactly this.
Being able to appreciate cars like this, possibly even admiring the engineering of it while it actually being nothing special at all.
I remember my dad bought an old Volvo for £600, absolute heap of a thing, but the way we'd bang on about it and laugh at its charm and the features it had for its time. the boot props didnt work, the AC was either on full blast or off. The bonnet had to be open with a coathanger! We later found out it was on snapped springs. We loved our sliver bullet shame to see it scrapped. All this while having a GR yaris and a 911 and yet the our sliver Volvo is up there in our car memories. Long live the sheds!

That's how durable it is. My aunt drives an '06 Yaris that she got from new and still with her today, and still running like clockwork!
Haven’t watched this yet, but I don’t understand the title as they are brilliant cars, extremely reliable, loads of space inside, massive boot, can easily swallow the biggest of prams without even touching the sides, brilliant for a family. And the 1.8 VVT-i has abit of power if you need it, can’t fault my 2005
A friend of mine worked in a Ford garage and someone wanted to trade in a 2008 avensis diesel with 430,000 miles for a new Ford they offered them scrap but he heard about it and bought it off them for £50 more with nearly 6 months mot.. car wasn't too bad condition. And he use it for his daily instead of his focus RS this was 4 years ago. And he still got it with over 500k and doesn't look after use it abuse it daily. And only done one oil change since he's had it as he's not bothered about it accept a few tyres he hasn't touched it in 4 years. A brilliant workhorse.. how many £200 cars last 4 years 😄
Love my 2008 (58) Avensis 2.0lt D4D TR Tourer/ Estate (you can choose what you want to call it). Owned it not for 10 years and done over 75,000 miles in it and I bought with 75k on the clock. OK she's not A1 and she starting to need a bit of work but in the time I've owned it I've spent probably less than a grand on the engine mechanicals (I'm a mechanic so doesn't cost me anything to the jobs), it's on the original clutch and exhaust system and apart from sets of tyres and brakes it's done/ doing me proud. 😊😊

Full service history with all receipts.
Tyres changed at appropriate times.
Every single MOT passed the ten times it had to go except for once where the brakes and tyres were below the minimum limit
Drives like new

No suspension damage all it all seems original
No fault codes
Honestly. Drives like butter. And guess what. The bargain I got it for would make people angry. But your right on one thing jay, had this car been from London it would have been rubbish.

which I bought brand new 211.000 miles on clock.still run every day. Parked in street allways.
Love it as much now as I did when I bought it.

A few years ago I had to get a car very quickly and bought a similar vintage Auris. I was a bit hesitant because it had the reputation of being a bit dull. However it was one of those cars that got under your skin and by the time some idiot rear ended it at a junction writing it off, I was genuinely upset to see it written off. If you ever need a dependable under the radar car that was surprisingly fun to hustle, you could do a lot worse than an Auris.
I loved mine until the rear axle snapped because it was so rotten underneath very quick diesel though fitted with the same engine as the avensis in this video
I've got a similar Avensis, and it's been my trusty companion on many road trips. I've never felt uncomfortable in it, and I've even slept in it a few times. The quality of the speaker system is also surprisingly good. It's had some mechanical issues, but overall owning it has been a positive experience and I'll be sad when I'll sell it in a few months.

These Toyota Avensis were a lot more durable that any brand from Germany/France. I would have a Toyota than any VW/BMW/Mercedes/Peugeot/Citroen/ Renault. People who lease or PCP cars are throwing money down the drain. If you cant afford to buy a new car its better to buy a car like your Avensis and save up for a new or nearly new car.
PCP, it's all about showing off at the school gate, and crying when the credit card gets pummeled for £400 at the month end
Hm but if you went for the 2.2 D4D diesel in these you'd need new cylinder heads at those miles driven..

I bought a nisan note on a 06 reg with 15000 miles on the clock , it's been sound to get to work and back I'm going to use it till it dies . No depreciation and monthly payments and couldn't give a toss if it gets cratched etc . I do look like a grandad driving it about though lol
