I think a separate before and after channel would do well. To be honest, I prefer those type of subjects on your main channel as they're much more what I'm interested in. Dragging a project back, and fixing it up, also will definitely help those that possibly want to get into the business. Saying what the mileage is, at the start of the video, is a must as it's a primary factor in a purchase. Also, maybe a thumbs up or thumbs down update, at the end of each video, to have a conclusion whether the venture was profitable or not. Go for it.
Like the idea of refurbishing houses Matt, done a bit of that previously, last one in the UK before I came here to Tenerife was in Glossop not far from you. You are very modest, 200,000 subscribers, I was with you before the 10k mark when you described it was the same as Stockport football ground..lol and yet I've never seen the silver youtube plack at the back of you for 100k subs like all youtuber display..love your channel and its always getting better.

@@techElephant get cat litter and fill a sock with it. chuck it underneat the front passenger seat and that should sort it out.
You can get them little plastic dehumidifier things in the pound shop, always have one in my car and renew it every few months once they’ve filled with water 👍🏼
Toyota would be my go to car if I didn't still have my venerable 2002 petrol Passat!
My Avensis 2.2 dcat hast 350k km and never been in the repair. Except for wear and tear nothing ever broke. Love that car and the estate is just great
My 2.2 dcat t180 estate have over 200k on it I love it and can’t beat a estate.

A friend donated a 06 2litre diesel avensis which had been lying in his drive way for 2 years. I liked the fact it was a chain instead of a belt apart from that i didn't have any experience of the avensis before and the fact it was an estate version made it look a bit different from the thousands of saloons on the road. I put a new battery,tyres and wiper blades and a service and liked the way it drove even as the d4d is a bit agricultural sounding i would happily put up with that as they are so reliable..... it now has 241 k miles on it now and going well..... my mechanic tells me he has sold a few with 400k on them no major problems with them....... thanks for the video
in 2013 i bought a T Reg Avensis Diesel for £400 from an old chap who had it parked in his garage for 2 years, i used it to travel from the east midlands to the faslane submarine base weekly, a round trip of nearly 800 miles every week and it never gave me a single problem, 1 of the best cars i ever had!
Had a d4d T3x for about 3 years, never had an issue. Sold that and got a 2005 petrol t spirit avensis estate as family grew. Coming up to 200,000 mikes now and never misses a beat!
The previous owner(s) needs to be congratulated; I imagine many cars of this age are advertised as "mint", yet few actually deserve the description. It doesn't look as if it has parking sensors either, which, given its size and condition, is quite remarkable.
My uncle who recently passed away has an 08 avensis 2l diesel. Currently on 246k mileage. With the annual mileage he used to do, has to do an interim service mid year and full service annually. Tyre changes every 2yrs. The car and engine is still running as smooth as ever. As a family, we’ll be aiming to get it to 300k as Uncle always said he would do it. These cars are solid work horses.
It'll go much longer than that. I know someone with a 05 2l petrol Avensis and its on 230k keeps passing its MOT with only a couple of advisories.

Can’t beat a avensis, my old man had one 58 plate and we sold it on cheap with 152k mikes, very very good car it was, can’t beat Toyotas

I had a petrol version of this car, ultra reliable a bit boring but the comfort for me was outstanding like driving around in your arm chair. Yes to the house vids!
Yes I have a 2007 1.8 t2 drives like new . No spend in over 3 years .
I've got one of these, a bit older, a 54 plate, and it's done 130,000 miles. It was bought as a family bus, and has been great in that role. I've serviced it regularly and it's never let me down, and rarely needed money spending on it. Three years ago, I bought a nearly new BMW 5 series as a new family car, and very nice it is too (and it's also been totally reliable). I decided to keep the old Avensis as a runaround, dump car (it's a tourer) and for putting mountain bikes in to go to and from rides. It just soldiers on, the air con is cold, it's still comfortable, and I would happily drive it across Europe, if only it were posible to get to Europe without queuing for days. Is it boring? In a sense, yes, but for a functional vehicle like this, the most boring thing of all is not being able to use it because it keeps breaking down. So no, it's not boring really.

These type of cars may be boring Matt but they go forever. Here in New Zealand cars are expensive and the Japanese brands dominate. Apart from a misplaced love of VWs early on and one banger of a mini, for 50 years I have only owned Japanese cars and their reliability is unmatched. Love it when you include vehicles of this type. Car ownership is a big status item in NZ but my god we can waste some cash trying to impress the neighbours.
Cars are Cheap here in NZ, especially these things. Cars aren't a status symbol here, they're essential, which is why 99% of people Own one.

My father has a 2005 toyota avensis (before the reestyling of yours) and it's a fantastic car. It still looks modern (in my opinion better than after the restyling) and even though it's starting to need repairs a little bit more often than desired it has served us VERY well. And it must have been a good car in general because you can see quite a few of them on catalan the roads still!
Getting a car like that kind of puts a spring in your step , you can see that , it's so refreshing when a car is exactly as the previous owner describes
Wow, that thing is bloody pristine! I know the Avensis D4D is as dull as ditchwater, but realistically, it's an ideal car for someone who sits on the M60 to work and back, not to mention cheap to run and insure, i'd say fix but they don't break.
Biggest mistake I ever made was swapping a "98 reg Toyota Avensis, bought from a main dealer for a "51 plate Mercedes C200 Kompressor, also bought from a main dealer. Even though I went for a more exciting car, ultimately I swapped a completely fault free car to a car that was absolutely laden with faults. Give me Toyota any day of the week.
The only thing I don't like about Toyotas is they're very basic Interior.......But I'll take basic over Flashy.

My wife's uncle had one of these from new, leased it then bought it off of the leasing company. Was utterly reliable. Very dull cars, but you can't go wrong with a Toyota!

The Avensis is in amazing condition, clearly been well looked after, its probably been garaged and not had a hard life - good buy for someone and some profit for you. It demonstrates how much better car manufacturing is these days. In the 60's/70's cars would start to rust after about 3years and be ready for the scrap yard at ten years.
Yes Matt! so excited to watch this. Always been a fan of that era of Avensis since I was a kid. My dad had one for 14 years. Never thought I would see the day.
The indicators in the mirrors came in with the facelift which also got the better looking front grill. The early 1.8 petrol had oil burning issues but was resolved post 2005. The 2.0/2..4 aren't e10 compatible.
The diesels didn't always have head gasket issues, those that did were generally the 2.2 engines especially in t180/sr180 form as seen in the IS diesel. A lot seemed to be made of this as the incident rate was seen to be relatively high for Toyota. The 2.0 was the most reliable of the bunch. Production issues were resolved for the 2009 year models onwards, you can get the 2.0 D4D in a mk3 Avensis with only £30 tax as well.

I’ve had the 2005 petrol 1.8 for nearly 3 years, it’s been spot on, had some brake pipes done, and two rear springs, apart from that just servicing.
It uses a little bit of oil, only a slight drop on the dipstick after a few months, just have to put a tiny amount in to keep it near the max line, apart from that no issues.
Wish I had it when my daughter was a baby, I had a 3 series BMW, and the pram would literally only go in and out one way, it was remembering which way, a lot of swear words were muttered when putting it in and out of the boot, where as with the Avensis, the boot is massive for the size of car, and because it’s a hatch, the opening is wide and low too, so the pram would literally just drop in, without touching the sides. Interior space is bigger than the 3 series too.
Someone knows his stuff! Yep the 2.2 had the HG issues. Mine was the 2.0. Always hankered after a T180 but heard that had an odd torque curve.
@@jonharvey3676 Also the 2.0 petrol I’ve heard is not worth the reduction in MPG over the 1.8, as there’s hardly any real world performance difference, even though it’s got an extra 20bhp

Bought the Estate version 5 yrs ago, 58000 on the Clock.
Only needed 2 front Springs in all those yrs.
Serviced regularly and now got 80000 on the clock.

Toyota build quality, the D4D diesel engines very reliable service regular basis car will last LONG time!!
I had use of one of these for a couple of months when it was new. I hated it at first, dull as dishwater but after a few weeks of total reliability and amazing fuel economy I loved it.
I remember a taxi driver picked up from where i once worked his 56 d4d had 440k on it it ran all day 2 shifts serviced every 10k it was on i think its 3 or 4th clutch but same engine and box.
I got one of these 2007 model only 60k miles, and I love it. Often when I go travelling I fold the back seat and sleep in it. It's so spacious, practical, and reliable.

Exactly the right car for a family in the 2020's, it is the obvious car for so many people. Well looked after, how unfashionable, you can tell it wasn't owned by a young person! I paid £1,400 for a 2009 Skoda Fabia (2) 1.9L TDI-PD with only 34,000 on it in March 2021. 2 owners from new (husband & wife) with full service history & It returns around 600 miles on 45L fuel. Currently on 56,000 and I am planning on maintaining and driving it a lot further yet!
It doesn't have any mod-cons and I have to dial in to AM radio to get TalkSport, but there is something extremely satisfying about having a simple vehicle with no distractions.
Great. Had an ex UK 1.8cc vvti with almost 200k miles In Kenya. used it for 2 years and it never disappointed me. Very comfortable, practical, spacious and stable on the road. My friends would call it a "cheap Benz" because of its comfort.
In the process of buying a new car and getting rid of my 2006 D4D Avensis. Done 130000 miles never a moment's trouble and regularly had it serviced... lovely car for what I wanted. It's not in anywhere as good as a condition as this one you've videoed with a few bumps and a big dent on the passengr side.... they offered me £190 partex but pretty sure I can get more for scrap... such a shame but the dent will cost a lot to get fixed
Old Toyotas are great purchases always. Can’t beat them. I have an e11 and an e12 and they are simply phenomenal

Great stuff Matt, you can’t lose with this one. I owned a 2008 model and kept for 10 years and 110 thousand miles before (stupidly) trading it in for a VW under the diesel scrapping scheme. Apart from usual running costs the only thing wrong with it was a squeaky clutch pedal that couldn’t be lubricated without removing the dashboard.
Scotty Kilmer would be proud of you! Clean reliable cheap to run . What’s not to like? Toyotas are not exciting but with the cost of living crisis they are ideal for a lot of people. Great video.
Great video as always Matt and a nostalgic one for me. I had a 2007 Avensis, same model and spec (minus the xenon headlights). It was my company car which I bought when I retired. I put 207k miles on it totally trouble free. Just an annual service and replacing usual consumables. After I part exed it somebody ( a mini cab driver?)put another 70k on it and it only disappeared off the radar this year. Usual story, look after a car and it will usually look after you.

When these cars came out, the styling did nothing for me but now I really like the front end.
I'm in agreement with the correspondent below and simply can't understand why not everyone takes care of their stuff, especially cars. Mine's a 9 year old CT200H and it gets completely pampered.
Smart example of a very well built and comfortable car. I do personally prefer the VVTi petrol engines though. Those engines really are bomb proof.
That’s what mine has, properly shifts along quite nicely when you take it to the higher rev range, I’ve surprised a few people too, they don’t expect an old 2005 Japanese family wagon to be going that quickly down the dual carriageway/ motorway!😂
@@jonnygti Have a Honda CRV MK 2 Automatic, family Runaround, there's a button on the Column shift, and when you want to pass out some one you Indicate and click same and it drops into,"D3" and just takes off with that high revving K20 singing along, great car, same engine as the Honda Accord...Great Upload...

I’ve had a 2005 Avensis 1.8 VVTi petrol for nearly 3 years now, it’s been a brilliant family car. I bought it after having to sell my old BMW 3 series, as it came to the end of its life, I wanted something cheap to buy and run, reliable, and practical for a small family, and with a bigger boot than my old 3 series, I got all of that, it’s excelled in all those departments, I mean yes it’s boring to look at and drive, but it does everything it’s supposed to, it carries the family around in comfort, with plenty of room inside, and it’s very safe with multiple air bags, and doesn’t break. I’ve only done two rear springs, and brake pipes in 3 years, other than that just servicing and tyres.
I’ve fitted a Sony Bluetooth DAB radio, with hands free calling etc, so it’s bang up to date too. Mine is the same as the one in the video, solid arches all round, zero rust anywhere, and mine is 2 years older than the one in the video, shows Toyota built them well 👍🏻
Feel free to share the monotony Matt! I like that this channel is happy to show real everyday cars alongside glitzy ones. Well built underdogs like the Avensis deserve more praise.
On a side note: wasn’t this era subject to a major Toyota recall for stuck accelerators?
The petrol are ones bullet proof as you said. Probably the strongest cars you can buy. Nothing goes wrong with them

My taxi driver friend has a petrol one of these, same year, colour and similar spec to that. It's done over 200,000 miles and it never misses a beat. He has it serviced regularly and it just keeps going and going. These are really reliable cars. I'm tempted to buy it from him when he's done with it, as I'd be interested in how long it keeps going. Great cars.
I can see the advantage of buying “mint” cars; you have little work to do and can have confidence in your sale and an easy profit. Great stuff Matt. Certainly would subscribe to another channel if we can share other aspects of your fascinating job. Thanks for sharing so much with us.
My 55 plate avensis petrol had 220k on clock and still going strong until I was rear ended and bought it back off insurance company droveit a bit more and sold it on making more money than total funds insurance paid out. It had no pick up and go. The 1.8 was a proper slow engine but bullet proof reliability
I had a 2003 Avensis Automatic 2.4 Petrol T-Spirit saloon, i bought it when it was four years old, and part exchanged it when twelve years old, for a Rav4, I love the Rav4 (including the CVT gearbox) but without a doubt, that Avensis T-Spirit was the best car i have ever owned.

My dad had one of those very low spec ones that had no armrest, plastic steering wheel and the manual ac dials. But you could drive it with just your little finger, effortless. People seem to love bashing these cars but honestly they’re great. He’s gone more upmarket now 😄
Cars that old are always a risk but it looks like you got a real good deal with that one, actually as described. Plus Toyotas are generally bullet proof when it comes to reliability and that one has obviously been very well cared for.
I would certainly give house renovation videos a watch. Great video as per usual.

Yes please to the house fixing up projects, if they are anything like these and with your dry sense of humour, they will be a winner. Love this channel.
Recently bought an identical spec one - 3 keys, 1 owner, FSH, 11 month MOT, 56 plate for £1130. Also has original dealer plates. Comfortable, spacious, well specced, genuine decent cars for a daily runabout!
If Harry can talk about his farm and garage ( I love both channels) then I can't see why you can't make a success of a fixer upper channel. Certainly worth a try!

When I first arrived in super rural Spain i bought a 1997 avensis for the princely sum of 500 pounds. not a car I would have ever touched. Was super reliable, it never missed a beat and every knob and switch worked. Did journeys of over 1,000 miles of it , which was a real eye-opener.
You also need another channel doing videos of the cars you have for sale.

Have you seen vehicles like yours (toyota avensis mk 1 or mk2) running on lpg, if yes are there any problems due to lpg kit.
I worked on these when new. Great car. The head gasket issues were caused by carbon build up on piston crown from oil consumption/EGR problems. The T180 estates were a thing of Japanese/UK beauty.
Willing to bet this was bought by someone with their retirement lump sum, garaged, washed every Sunday and serviced and repaired as required.
In better shape than a 18 month old Range Rover. We don't get that car in the United States; but it's built like a Toyota

Still have my 2004 avensis t4, 7 years now. She's definitely in my top ranks of reliable motors the other being a verso had that 10 years. Toyota just know how to make reliable cars. Gotta love them really.
I brought one exactly the same model and mileage for £1100 6 months ago. Brilliant, solid, economical transportation. I've had many cars of this era that a riddled with DPF or sensor issues. But so far I think I've hit on budget gold, with 90's reliability but with modern safety and low miles.
Just how? I've never seen one below 5k

I had a 2005 1.8 petrol Avensis from 2010 - 2021. Loved it, it never ever let me down and had loads of room, the AC was very efficient and it averaged 50mpg The only problem I had was when the salesman that sold it to me rear ended it when I was driving it home! Even worse, he shunted me into the car in front who happened to be his wife. cost the dealership a few quid in repairs. I was working at the dealership at the time so was able to keep driving my first gen Avensis whilst it was in the body shop.
Another great video matt and like the idea of a fixing up channel with you doing it I know your time is limited and valuable but its a great idea keep the videos coming big up high peak autos 👍
I had exactly the same model Avensis a few years ago. Boring, yes, but I was impressed with how comparable it was with my dad's Lexus LS at the time. Not just the shared switchgear but the way the doors shut for example. All the taxi drivers had them round here too and they can't all be wrong (same reason why I recently owned a Skoda Superb 😀)
Doors shut superbly a sign of quality . switch gear bullet proof.engine on the petrol reliable ergonomics for me 6 foot perfect.
I love cars like these. I considered buying the estate version as a 26-year-old just to get a few years worth of use in it. Drive it to and from work each day, chuck a load of rubbish in the back and occasionally check the oil if I had to.
Even now I'll look at the same era Corolla and will be tempted to buy one just for the ease of not having to pay an arm and a leg in repairs every year. As much as I love 'proper' cars, I simply cannot afford the luxury of having something fun and garish.

Durability of modern day cars has come a long way since the 1970s . Back in 84 I had ten year old Cortina over the summer. It was already on its last legs , and the only thing going for it was the popular golden brown paint which blended so well with the rust.

Had the same model. Riding quality was best, absolutely no noise whatsoever. As quiet as an E Class from the same era. Comfort was too, very well setup chassis, top soundproofing and build quality.
And that standard unassuming sound system sounded great
And this simply isn't true. I've driven plenty of these, one petrol and a diesel. The ridequality is nowhere near a premium german car of that era (BMW, MERC, AUDI) or the soundproofing. It's not a bad car though, just not great to drive.

It didn't have the sharpness of 3 series but it was more comfortable, much more relaxing to drive on a long trip although less engaging. I loved it for what it was not for trying to pretend it's something else. A 318d from that era was not actually that great. Talking about similarly powered cars.
Anyway, overall BMW had a better balance which can please the enthusiasts as well even in low powered models. Avensis was the more comfortable car, as comfortable and quiet as C Class for sure.y brother had a 2.2 diesel and honestly I preferred the avensis
The house fixing idea sounds quite interesting! In order to keep things neat and topical I suggest you create a second channel for that, and to get things going there you can drive initial views to that channel from this one. There is nothing wrong punting your different channels between each other, the common denominator is after all yourself and we enjoy your content.

I had a 2.0 T4 tourer about 12 years ago. It
wasn't the most exciting car in the world but it was comfortable, well built and 100% reliable. Only got rid as it was a bit heavy on fuel. Unfortunately I traded it in on a Saab 93 tid which turned into an unmitigated disaster.

Are they reliable for long distance journeys???
Are they capable to use lpg as a fuel???
My Avensis has done 177000 miles, had it for 11 years on a 2006 plate, no engine problems, i think as long as you service every 10000 miles and dont let the revs get below 1500 rpm, keep the engine spinning. never had 55mpg.

@@mikeonfreeserve2926 Hi Mike, yes and yes, plus the torque band starts around 1500 and ends at around 3500, so this is also the most efficient place to keep the revs.
always loved Toyotas got a 24 year old estima now which I will never part with as its been mega reliable and a great family bus plus it has a disabled seat for my misses and so many toys that most cars from that era could only dream of having

Car looks like new ! Well done to the previous owners. I guess if the last owner had the car for 10 years, they kept it well as perhaps when they bought it, the intention was to keep it long term. With so many people leasing cars on 2-3 year deals, the flog-it-to-death-and-on-to-the-next-one mentality a lot of people have could mean the days of mid-range non-electric cars lasting in this condition for 15 years are numbered.
2 years ago, i bought a T25 from 2009 with 150k miles on it. Never had any issues, all i had to replace where the brakes. Great car, nothing else to add.
My Dad has had this exact model for about 12 yrs now and it’s never missed a beat. Took it for an MOT a couple of weeks ago and it didn’t even need a bulb. Amazing cars. Boring, but amazing. If I was in the market for a cheap motor I’d take that off you no problem, for £1800 😁

I’ve just finished doing this for 3 years and you know what I’m keeping my 2009 Volvo for another year while i save up a decent deposit on the car i really want (Range Rover Velar)
Precisely and your 2009 is the age were all the depreciation is done so you will not loose a lot of money if you keep it an extra year or chop it in earlier.
Keep the Volvo for when the Velar is being fixed. I traded a f11 5 Series in for a Vogue recently and wished i'd kept is as a spare..
A relative had a diesel Avensis for about 18 years and it did 250k miles before he sold it. Serviced regularly and an oil change every 6 months.
Yes, they're pretty dull to look at and drive, but they're well built, reliable and decent kit. That's what most people want from a car - reliability and economy.
Where they not heavy on oil consumption as the early petrol's were and what about the dpf regeneration was that a problem? thanks
@@gtibruce He never mentioned any issues. On the contrary he made the point that all it cost him, apart from fuel, tax and insurance, were the consumables such as brake pads, tyres and a light bulbs or two. He now has a diesel E220 so it'll be interesting to see if that's as durable.
@@gtibruce That age of diesel car did not have a DPF filter, from around 2009/2010 did they start to come in. I have had many diesel cars and none have used oil.
