We've had a 2008 (facelift as you call it) 2.0 litre d4d for about 6 years, its done nearly 90k miles now. I drive one of these. 2003 1.8 petrol. It was my dad's but he passed it on to me when he bought his new car. I like the review- on the whole it's a good car but it can have issues. My own experiences: - It's mostly reliable but the catalytic converter can fail( as another owner pointed out below), mine did only after 80k miles. A replacement was going to cost almost as the price of the car so I haven't bothered replacing it. It's been passing its MOT on emissions but you never know when it might not anymore. Every year it's 'hope for the best'. This also means the engine light is on permanently. - Can be thirsty for oil. I always have to keep an eye out for the oil levels as once it ran out completely. Apart from this, we haven't had many issues over last 15 years. Just regular maintenance. 100k+ miles and still on original clutch and original timing chain. Comfortable, low revving car. Its acceleration is slow but once you are over 40 mph, it has enough power and overtaking is not an issue. It is best on long roads and the ride is very smooth. For me, the catalytic converter issue means it won't have much of a resale value but hopefully I can manage to get a few more years out of it before it kicks it.
most of catalitic converters problems comes from lambda sensor, lambda sensor gets bad from not looked spark plugs, not cleaned air filter sensor and other issues.
This is a common problem with petrol avensis. It's burning oil due to clogged oli drain plugs in the pistons. Fill it with oil flush and premium fuel, take it for a run at high revs and then change the oil to fully synthetic. That should solve it. No point changing the cat until the oil burning problem is solved. A run a high revs with some flush in and then some good oil might shift the oil in the oil drain plugs.
I’ve owned a 2005 Avensis 2.0 wagon with all the options. I sold it with 257 thousand kilometers and the only thing that ever broke was the starter motor. A common problem on these is the catalytic converter that will wear out after 200 thousand kilometers, but it will pass its yearly inspection, usually the oxygen sensor will give the engine warning light for a couple of days and then its gone for a while.
Ive had a 1.8 Petrol 2008 Model for 7 years now. Its roomy a smooth drive with a nice automatic gear box. Its not the quickest car in the world but i have to say i Love it. 100, 000 on the clock. Hope it keeps on going.
How is that car doing???? Current mileage???? what about the automatic gearbox??? Is it 4 or 5 speed???? Is it smooth???? No problem with the engine???? Is it fuel efficient?? No rust issues????
Had this car from new 2004 reliable wear and tear issues could have changed my car 3 / 4 times ... why should you keep it ? there is so many still on the road if they were unreliable you would see them only in the scrap yard ... keep until death ... toyota built to last no doubt on this one
I have a 2006 2 litre model bought it with 28.000 miles on the clock!!!....had it now for 8 months and not a squeek or rattle totally reliable and every bit as well built and good to drive as my last 3 series BMW....great car.
Had/still have 2 of them both with 1.6 petrol .. built like a good damn tank ! Never let me down even in most extreme weather conditions such as -30 Celsius .. one negative side that 1.6 do not have traction control which is horrible in our winter "too much wheels spin " still having a station wagon one
It is simply not correct that there should be problems with the 1.8 l petrol engine having to use oil. I am the happy owner of 2 Avensis. One from 2005 that has done 400,000 km and the other from 2006 with 355,000 on the speedometer. Both has 1.8 l engines. There are no reported problems with these engines
Very useful way of reviewing: no bullshit, just the facts! I have this car. Mine is very difficult to steer when it was in the warm sun for a few hours.
2 years Ago I bought my Avensis (2007, 2.2 DCat) with about 200000km. Now it has nearly 280000km on it and there are no problems in any way. The 2.2 dcat only wants good quality and sulfur free fuel, Never got problems with it so far.
I have a Toyota Avensis 2.0 D-4D from 2005 . I bought it 2 years ago, no problem till now, but in the last days now in winter i had some problems with servo. Also changing gears is began to be to easier, maybe I need to put some oil somewhere?...Overall a good spacious car, not very sporty but reliable...
I worked back then at an Toyota Dealership and i never had to replace a Chain on this Car. Neither on the Petrol and Diesel ones. I wouldn't say, that the DMF and Injectors are that bad. I know people which have more than 300000km on their car and still have the first Turbo, Injector and DMF. Of course, it can fail earlier, but i wouldn't say it's worse than other cars.
I have 2 avensis T25. 1.8vvti (380 000km) and 2.0 (200 000km). I never had problem. For my this is best car ever. Japan car is best. But toyota is most reliable. When i have buy next car, i buy toyota or lexus.
Hi, I need your advice . 1.8 or 2.0 engine ? I had heard that 2.0 is more sensitive to petrol quality, because its direct injection, because of E10 bioetanol in petrol. Who h one to choise ?
I've got the 2006 estate (facelift version) with a 1.8 l/95 kW engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. I bought it brand new a little more than 13 years ago and never had any real issues with it. It's the best car I've had so far: roomy, comfy, reliable and fuel-efficient
Avoid the oil burning petrol engines (never had one that didn't) and buy the diesel. Buy the diesel from 2006- to avoid the cam belt. I have three, between 270000 and 380000 kms. Neither uses any oil. One has issues with the particle filter, so may sell it. It is the one with the lowest mileage... Especieally the 2.0 litre 2007-08 is cheap and dependable to run.
I found a 2007 2.2 Diesel, the car is in very good condition, but I found that when removing the oil fill cap while the engine is idling, strong puffs of blue smoke come out along with oil drops, the car has 270k km, would you advice purchasing it?
Reliable car. I have a 2007 model. It does have a rust issue. The rear lower control arms have rusted and need replacing. This is expensive to do. Otherwise hardly any rust anywhere.
I said I add comment I had 2.0 d4d 126hp engine problems with egr valve car wasn't regenerated so I bought 2003 1.6 vvti way better car than 2012 d4d it does take lol top up after every 1000miles but other than that it's very realable unit indeed so very happy
Hello Thank you for this awesome video. I bought this car a week ago. 1.8 petrol 2006.lovely car. I was wondering can i adjust the clutch in this car? Thank you in advance
@LA Detailing the car did a great job. Didnt have issues for 50k driving around with it.but no I dont have it anymore.i would recommend this car.1.8 or 2 liter benzine from 2006
have a 06 d4d 2.l diesel fan works, a/c works but very little heat comes out? the other issue is topped up the oil due to low oil warning light coming on now it's filled to max but still intermittently comes on is this a faulty sensor or maybe an oil pump issue ? if anybody knows btw the car runs perfectly
Only had one with the 2.4L for 4-5 months and already had to replace 2 motor mounts and the starter, and the car still vibrates at idle or at a stop light, only 119000 kms
Hey ..i am planning to purchase a 2.2 D4D but the car has a issue of just reaching 40km/h . The ower says it might be the exhaust catalyst but i am a bit wary . The car has no other issues and is very neat with a service record . What am i to decide ?
Seems like the D-4D is quite a bad engine... what do you think about the 1.4 D-4D? I was thinking to get a Toyota iQ 1.4 D-4D with manual transmission and have it chipped up to 115 HP. My dad's corolla has that exact same engine, but it has only 61k kilometers in it (no problems at all so far) so not sure if they are reliable on the long run.. what do you think?
Late response - we have Toyota Yaris with that engine, now with 250000 km on it and it is still going like a new one! There was not a single error on it and only some rubber belts were changed, but timing chain and turbo and all the other parts are original.
Zack, this is a very popular car in Europe, I'm sure this video is very useful for a looot of people. Of course the Avensi s isn't the choice of "car people" more like a family / business trip car
very helpful bin looking for a automatic transmission here in The Netherlands.. don't have a lot to spend.. want a car that is low maintenance and good mileage.. EV's are to expensive.. alas.. thanks for the review..
Hi I checked that car, it looks good on the photos although it has some scratches here and there -if it was made after August 2005 then it most probably won't have problems with oil consumption -however since it has more then 220 000 km then I would be prepared to change the timing chain, if it was not changed by the previous owner
well have second of those now. 2003 luna 1.8 fueland 2004 T3.5 also 1.8. little upgrade had to make because of rotten wires on drivers side. that coused problems in electronics. starting with windows and later efecting electronic panel too. without this yes i got first one with broken steering column as one of tiny little plastic part can snap easily but u need to change all full 3 parts steering column as if u start to take a part that snaps too. other problem is recalled part on suspension. can't remember name( banana or arm shape with bushings). also often problem with o2 sensor, air filter sensors. this all are expensive to fix too. yes corners rots on windows and even front screen too. plastics under engine always brakes and loosens. bumper clips complete shit. as many i seen them all broken. because bumper clips broke also plastics around wheels easy to damage too as bumper holds them in place. without all that a comfy car. a bit noisy. lovely power but just car not made for speed. i liked Luna way more than T 3.5 for sure. simple bits makes huge difference. just maintenance of car a bit too expensive for sure. steering column only 1500 eu if u need new, those bananas/ arms or what ever called( recalled parts) 300 eu, lambda sensor starts 90 but goes easy up to 200 for decent one and so on. oh yea starter went of too 200eu. alternator had to be repaired on 03 one and tensioner was badly warned. also bursted pipe from engine. and first one was 2 places leakage on engine and a few more small trubles. all this pleasures on both cars had in 2.5 years. wooooohooo officially hate this car but can't afford better :( day after tomorrow time for more service ;( most annoying part is anything u touch is common Toyota👿 problem for those that complains for oil and fuel usage advice check spark plugs and same again lambda sensor. bank 1. this are cousing this issues. normaly my one uses nax 7.5l in town and outside of town i got even 4.5 a quiet bit distance going 80 braking mainly for turns only by taking foot of clutch and no harsh acceleration. this car uses twice more fuel if u pres clutch down more often
@Marc Archibald true, if I could find one, I moved to Europe recently and 90% of the cars here are diesel and manual. I ended up buying a 2012 VW golf diesel station wagon. This is the first time I buy a non Japaneses car, I hope I will not regret that haha.
@@sarmasanadrian4902 Japaneses make great cars. I had Mazda's and Suzuki until today, non of my cars ever had any problems other then regular maintenance. Toyota's are known for even better quality then mazda and suzuki. But all my Japaneses cars were always benzine, I hope VW diesel is as reliable as they say, and the good thing going on this car is so popular here that parts are super cheap and easy to find, Japanese cars are not so popular here for some reason.

I drive one of these. 2003 1.8 petrol. It was my dad's but he passed it on to me when he bought his new car. I like the review- on the whole it's a good car but it can have issues. My own experiences:
- It's mostly reliable but the catalytic converter can fail( as another owner pointed out below), mine did only after 80k miles.
Good review. I own one, the 1.8 automatic executive from 2005, with actually 290.000 km, and I never had big issues with this car.
MPG?????
Ive had a 1.8 Petrol 2008 Model for 7 years now. Its roomy a smooth drive with a nice automatic gear box. Its not the quickest car in the world but i have to say i Love it. 100, 000 on the clock. Hope it keeps on going.
How is that car doing???? Current mileage????
what about the automatic gearbox???

Had this car from new 2004 reliable wear and tear issues could have changed my car 3 / 4 times ... why should you keep it ? there is so many still on the road if they were unreliable you would see them only in the scrap yard ... keep until death ... toyota built to last no doubt on this one
I have a 2006 2 litre model bought it with 28.000 miles on the clock!!!....had it now for 8 months and not a squeek or rattle totally reliable and every bit as well built and good to drive as my last 3 series BMW....great car.
How did you find one with such a low mileage 😮😮

Thank you DCR, very good review for people who want to buy used car. Do you have review for newer Avensis, Accord, Civic, or Skodas.
I had one 2l D4D very good car...never had any problem...i miss my Avensis..
I have a 12 Toyota avinsis 2.0d4d very good engine 6 speed very fast very good on fuel
Why did you sell it? Or what happened to it?
@@matyibarnaI sold it... Had it for 4 year's ..
There are so many 2.2l Diesel Avensis for sale with 250.000 up to 420.000 km, hard to imagine the engine is so bad...
170/177 hp are not good, 1.4 from corolla or 116HP 2.0 are the best
It is simply not correct that there should be problems with the 1.8 l petrol engine having to use oil. I am the happy owner of 2 Avensis. One from 2005 that has done 400,000 km and the other from 2006 with 355,000 on the speedometer. Both has 1.8 l engines.
There are no reported problems with these engines
Very useful way of reviewing: no bullshit, just the facts! I have this car. Mine is very difficult to steer when it was in the warm sun for a few hours.

2L diesel lasts forever. So inexpensive to own and maintain, had 2 of them
2 years Ago I bought my Avensis (2007, 2.2 DCat) with about 200000km. Now it has nearly 280000km on it and there are no problems in any way. The 2.2 dcat only wants good quality and sulfur free fuel, Never got problems with it so far.
But do facelift models have less issues?
I need this car in 2019
how good is their engines up to date?
I have a Toyota Avensis 2.0 D-4D from 2005 . I bought it 2 years ago, no problem till now, but in the last days now in winter i had some problems with servo. Also changing gears is began to be to easier, maybe I need to put some oil somewhere?...Overall a good spacious car, not very sporty but reliable...
Why is my dashboard melting if it's sunny?
I worked back then at an Toyota Dealership and i never had to replace a Chain on this Car. Neither on the Petrol and Diesel ones.
I wouldn't say, that the DMF and Injectors are that bad. I know people which have more than 300000km on their car and still have the first Turbo, Injector and DMF. Of course, it can fail earlier, but i wouldn't say it's worse than other cars.
Got a 2.2 D-CAT 177hp with 140.000km, no problems with it and it packs some power
Very fast car indeed love to get auris 2.2 dcat
I have 2 avensis T25. 1.8vvti (380 000km) and 2.0 (200 000km). I never had problem. For my this is best car ever.
Japan car is best. But toyota is most reliable.
When i have buy next car, i buy toyota or lexus.
Hi, I need your advice . 1.8 or 2.0 engine ?
I had heard that 2.0 is more sensitive to petrol quality, because its direct injection, because of E10 bioetanol in petrol.
Who h one to choise ?
What is the capacity of transmission oil
Hi, is the 2.d4d 2010 any better?
I've got the 2006 estate (facelift version) with a 1.8 l/95 kW engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. I bought it brand new a little more than 13 years ago and never had any real issues with it. It's the best car I've had so far: roomy, comfy, reliable and fuel-efficient
Nicee man, how about 2.0 letrol engines are they good
I will get the facelift in two days. Can't wait. 😊
Great review, have a 2l T25, your review is spot on.
My father has this car and it has been used for 13 years and it's still going
In short, the 2007-2008 1.8L petrol cars with manual transmission are best.
Guys help, is toyota avensis 2003 1.8 manual reliable car?
I was looking for a 1.8 petrol but not any more now looking for a 2.0 petrol. Tyvm for the tips👍
Nope. Sounds like cylinder head problem.
Great review. D-4D 2.2 diesel head gasket could be repaired under warranty by Toyota if
What’s that?😊
I hace a 2.0 d4d of 2004. Any problem with the engine, running in perfect condicions.
Reliable car. I have a 2007 model. It does have a rust issue. The rear lower control arms have rusted and need replacing. This is expensive to do. Otherwise hardly any rust anywhere.
Is the 2014 modells any good with timing chain petrol motor?
Sorry no heated windscreen. Only small heater below wipers in some models.
I said I add comment I had 2.0 d4d 126hp engine problems with egr valve car wasn't regenerated so I bought 2003 1.6 vvti way better car than 2012 d4d it does take lol top up after every 1000miles but other than that it's very realable unit indeed so very happy
Hello
Thank you for this awesome video.
I bought this car a week ago.
1.8 petrol 2006.lovely car.
I was wondering can i adjust the clutch in this car? Thank you in advance

You are able to adjust to clutch pedal height that should improve the feel if the height is out ? Regards
@LA Detailing the car did a great job.
Didnt have issues for 50k driving around with it.but no I dont have it anymore.i would recommend this car.1.8 or 2 liter benzine from 2006
Make a video of Toyota corolla i just got mine 2005 1.6
Misleading.
Why?
I have a 2007 2 litre diesel.
Still a brilliant, reliable, efficient car.
Thank you for preview. I use this car and do not have any promblems indeed. Avensis 2.4 2007
Уаз Патриот есть?
have a 06 d4d 2.l diesel fan works, a/c works but very little heat comes out? the other issue is topped up the oil due to low oil warning light coming on now it's filled to max but still intermittently comes on is this a faulty sensor or maybe an oil pump issue ? if anybody knows btw the car runs perfectly
2.0 4D4 head gasket gone, clutch problems 2012 180k km
How about Toyota Auris 2006-2009
Only had one with the 2.4L for 4-5 months and already had to replace 2 motor mounts and the starter, and the car still vibrates at idle or at a stop light, only 119000 kms
Check cylinder wear.

I never had this car, but I had a 2000 Corolla with the same 1.8 VVT petrol engine. The exhaust manifold is a common problem with them
Hey ..i am planning to purchase a 2.2 D4D but the car has a issue of just reaching 40km/h . The ower says it might be the exhaust catalyst but i am a bit wary . The car has no other issues and is very neat with a service record .
What am i to decide ?
i am from Mauritius i go to buy 1 used Avenis 2006 the engine reader meter is 287,000 km what is your feedback on it please
Any reviews for Opel/vauxhall models?? Thanks
I have 12 2.0 d4d lots taxi round here with same car no problems
By reviewing Japanese cars we meant luxury Japanese cars, like Lexus, Acura and Infiniti but mostly Lexus
I know, the next video will be about the second generation Lexus IS
Zack, this is a very popular car in Europe, I'm sure this video is very useful for a looot of people. Of course the Avensi s isn't the choice of "car people" more like a family / business trip car
Thanks for the great review.
There is also a 20l petrol engine with automatic transmission which is not in the review...
Any video for the Auris model ?
I av a 03toyota avensis hatchback,, it as acquired a flapping noise but only when in gear, any ideas anyone🙏???
Good car but if the rear trailing arms and subfram not oiled they are bad for rotten. Need lots of waxyol so they last
I’m planning on buying an Avensis with the 2.4 vvti. Is this engine reliable enough, are there are known issues for this engine?
2.4 engine is shit. Known to burn oil due to piston problem.
@@thelogician1934
Thanks for the advice
The 1.8 engine is fine after 2005, toyota solved the issues, get one after this year and all should be good.
what if the car was made in midde of 2005? :D

I want your opinion before I buy this car if it's worth it Toyota Avensis Liftback 1.6 Terra JE
3 990 EUR 230.000km
Hi
I checked that car, it looks good on the photos although it has some scratches here and there
-if it was made after August 2005 then it most probably won't have problems with oil consumption
-however since it has more then 220 000 km then I would be prepared to change the timing chain, if it was not changed by the previous owner
It depends on what is considered a lifetime for the car. 2,3,5 years?
Don’t buy the 1.6, it’s heavy on petrol and gutless. Get a 1.8 or 2.0, you will be much happier 😎
Nice review. I saw your lot of video's.Please make video about jaguar xj and xf Used .which is more reliable.
If I send you a link , can you review it for me ?
Left my logbook in the glovebox in one of these and nearly lost the car ... you need someone you can trust....
I love midsize Toyotas... unfortunately they're very much expensive here in Brazil... even used Camrys.

The Lamborghini aventador is a good choice imo
@@danyGRS Do you recommend diesel or petrol???
Do you recommend automatic gearbox???
well have second of those now. 2003 luna 1.8 fueland 2004 T3.5 also 1.8. little upgrade had to make because of rotten wires on drivers side. that coused problems in electronics. starting with windows and later efecting electronic panel too. without this yes i got first one with broken steering column as one of tiny little plastic part can snap easily but u need to change all full 3 parts steering column as if u start to take a part that snaps too. other problem is recalled part on suspension. can't remember name( banana or arm shape with bushings). also often problem with o2 sensor, air filter sensors. this all are expensive to fix too. yes corners rots on windows and even front screen too. plastics under engine always brakes and loosens. bumper clips complete shit. as many i seen them all broken. because bumper clips broke also plastics around wheels easy to damage too as bumper holds them in place. without all that a comfy car. a bit noisy. lovely power but just car not made for speed. i liked Luna way more than T 3.5 for sure. simple bits makes huge difference. just maintenance of car a bit too expensive for sure. steering column only 1500 eu if u need new, those bananas/ arms or what ever called( recalled parts) 300 eu, lambda sensor starts 90 but goes easy up to 200 for decent one and so on. oh yea starter went of too 200eu. alternator had to be repaired on 03 one and tensioner was badly warned. also bursted pipe from engine. and first one was 2 places leakage on engine and a few more small trubles. all this pleasures on both cars had in 2.5 years. wooooohooo officially hate this car but can't afford better :( day after tomorrow time for more service ;( most annoying part is anything u touch is common Toyota👿 problem
for those that complains for oil and fuel usage advice check spark plugs and same again lambda sensor. bank 1. this are cousing this issues. normaly my one uses nax 7.5l in town and outside of town i got even 4.5 a quiet bit distance going 80 braking mainly for turns only by taking foot of clutch and no harsh acceleration. this car uses twice more fuel if u pres clutch down more often
I was looking to buy diesel avensis from 2008, disappointed to hear its not that reliable

true, if I could find one, I moved to Europe recently and 90% of the cars here are diesel and manual.

Japaneses make great cars.
Thank you
