Been doing stained glass for over 40 years. Was trained by old German masters, and just do it as a hobby now. I work with lead much more than copper foil, but thats just my preference. Your tips are very good especially regarding glass and solder types. Those little tips can make the difference between developing the skill or getting frustrated and giving up.
😮 I'm almost at two years and just a few projects under me. But I don't think I'll stop learning since there's so much room to grow. I'm also looking to learn lead work soon so that should open up a whole new world. Thanks for sharing and glad we have a veteran glass artist around! 🤙

Quick note. Grinding glass requires water to prevent air borne glass particles from being breathed in. When using a corburunum stone use water. Before grinders corburunum stones were commonly used and kept in a container of water.

GREAT TIPS! When I started in stained glass there a tendency to be cheap. But a fid is only a buck or two and paying for good cleaners is worth the investment! Very interesting video and it was fun to have the walk around back ground!
Ha I definitely went the cheapest route! It's not all that bad since it was a learning experience. The fid is a really useful tool and I still don't think I know how to fully use one 😂. Thanks and glad you enjoyed the video! Happy New Year to you both 🎉

Yes I made that mistake,I have the hardest time soldiering,its mostly attaching the hook to hang,it seems that the material is not right,but made for hooks.
These are all very good tips, I didn't know the corundum stone one. I'll have to buy me one of those.
Pretty cheap and helps when you don't want to get out the grinder and your cut pieces are almost perfect
This is a great tutorial, I've watched a few times! It's funny, cos I've gone back to using a cork instead of fid...but I guess it's just personal preference! I've made the feathers and love the design. Have been making quite a few things with knowing the basics! Thank you again from Scotland! :)

Just a tip because i used rosin solder. You can buff that off the solder with high %rubbing alcohol. Thats how we remove it off electronics. With a q-tip.

So many mistakes and still learning all the time! What would be your top 5?
1.Get some cheap clear glass to practice cutting before you try expensive glass. 2. Proper heat and flux are essential for soldering. Do not use rosin core solder, the flux needs to be on the surface, not in the solder. Copper uses a different flux than lead. 3. Always have bandaids close by, you will get cut. 4. Good cutting is all about consistent pressure both in the score and the break. Even pressure on both sides of the score is key to a good break. 5. Never forget that the thickness of foil and lead must be accounted for when cutting a pattern. There are shears for both and they should be used or your pieces will not fit together.

I think you call it a fit tool in this video, it’s the little tool that helps you burnish the copper tape onto the glass

Hey, I’ve been looking for videos on how to grind glass with the carborundum stone and well so far I found nothing. Would love to see a video on how to use it, do have any vid suggestion or tips?
Hi Tahianna, I would use it like a file and not go back and forth on the glass but push in one direction and repeat. Do it lightly and it will take away the burs and sharp points. It is not for grinding or shaping glass. You will have to get a glass grinder for that. Hope that helps.
Hey! There are not many tutorials in spanish so I ended up here learning some tips. I took a class of stained glass a couple of weeks ago and the teacher told me to use 50/50 solder. Do you recomend me to keep using that or should i start using 60/40 solder? Thanks!
I've only been using 60/40 and it's been great. I believe it is also more common to use to get a nicer glossy finish look. But 50/50 could be used for the entire project too. Try them both and see!
My mistake is being an overly ambitious perfectionist. I could have started off with patterns that were only straight cuts, but instead I struggled with cutting quite small pieces with some pretty drastic curves. I broke so many pieces on the last score I needed to make. And I could have salvaged any of them with an extra solder line, or maybe even superglue. In fact, that is what I initially did. But before I could bring myself to actually foil it, the perfectionist in me wouldn't let me call it good enough, so I had to do right...after two more fails. Still not even done with the piece.

Haha using electronics solder would entirely be a mistake I'd make. Methanol soaked qtip/toothpick should take that leftover amber flux off though.
Hi there, I'm a new user and would like to know why you recommend using solid cored solder but applying liquid Flux at the beginning of the soldering prosses ? I mean why not using flux cored solder if the flux is the same thing that we apply during soldering. Thanks
The rosin core leaves that sap in your solder so the lines aren’t as clean and shiny.

hello I really like your channel and all your video! I have one question.. I really want to start stained glass but I don't know if it's ok to do this at home? Do I need a fan or something like that, because I share a room with my boyfriend for work and I don't know if it's ok... I also have 2 cat I hope that not dangerous for them. thanks you
Yea glass will get everywhere and not good for pets if you don't clean up properly. Soldering is also another big issue if you don't have ventilation.
I think less so than opalescent to avoid is highly textured glass. I used both in my 1st project 😂 it turned out great but the textured stuff had to be recut once or twice

I’m having trouble with after I put the copper tape around my pieces and soddering them / the sodder looks super thick on my glass pieces ? I put the tape equally on each side and still having trouble 😕
SEAJME Some people like the look of heavy solder so it could be a preference kinda thing. But the more solder the stronger the bond. Also you can play with narrower strips of foil. I typically use 7/32” copper foil. Hope that helps!
I came across this 11 mo ths after it was posted so I hope someone sees my question. Can I use a wood burning tool for the solder?

Depends on the kit I guess but if you knew what you wanted in each item, it would be better to get them separately to customize it. But kits just make things easier.
