Motel (Leonard Frey) hails the miracle of winning Tzeitel's (Rosalind Harris) hand in marriage.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel.

Probably my favorite romantic scene of all time. A beautiful song, with their pure, honest, sincere love for each other showing through. Gorgeous!
The true love is the best one particularly when it starts as young guys as I had fallen in love when I was 15 and he was 16 we respected eax error each other and we had no flesh desires but we were feeling happy and we were waiting for the marriage. It was another time and today the love is based only on desires but the unpure desires...pity

I had SUCH a crush on Motel when I was 13 and seeing this musical for the first time in eighth grade music class. He's just so sweet and unapologetically exuberant about how in love he is. We love a sensitive man!
RIGHT?? A lot of guys think acting macho and pretending like they have no emotions/expressions/feelings is “hot” but for me, the entire opposite is true. When I see a guy get THIS happy my guts become a big pile of marshmallow fluff LOL.
This is my favorite scene because they both seem so happy! And they look so in love.

As a child watching this film on repeat, I wasn’t invested in any of the other couples, probably because they didn’t get the fairytale ending but something about seeing a man ecstatic about the prospect of getting married to the point that to some people it would be considered feminine? I want a man like that! It’s not a ball and chain; it’s the best thing to ever happen to him!!!!
Honestly, I never got why getting married is considered “girly” when it’s something that happens to both men and women.

While his entire performance in this is brilliant, I absolutely love her laugh at 1:55. A laugh of love, relief, and disbelief all at the same time. Fantastic

Leonard Frey had amazing depth and range and he gave many nuanced performances on film and stage. It's hard to believe this sensitive, gentle and loving Motel was a cynical, nasty and catty Harold in Boys in The Band. His death was a great loss to the theatre.

I know. I've seen Fiddler on the Roof a thousand times since I was a kid. I just saw Boys in the Band for the first time a couple of days ago. Was looking up other movies the actors from it were in, and I literally just 2 minutes ago discovered Harold and Motel were played by the same person🤯

Will Link I love the score by Williams that accompanies it perfect that it has just enough whimsy to it, but also is very light and cheerful. A great highlight for a different breed of a film musical.

Owldude000 YESS. I think THAT’S why I like it so much. A lot of times in a movie when someone’s supposed to be excited their reaction and voice seems fake and kinda underwhelming, but here...aside from the singing, he’s acting EXACTLY how real people really act when they’re excited. Running back and forth, giggling, waving his arms around, etc, that’s what you DO when you get so excited that you forget about looking silly.

I feel just like him right now! Finding love under incredibly bad circumstances, when everything is hopeless is a miracle.
This is my MOST favorite of Leonard Frey's roles. He is remembered most clearly for the bitchy Harold in BOYS IN THE BAND....But Motel....the dear little tailor is loving, and sweet and finds his courage and love for Tzeitel..RIP Mr. Frey. Excellent work!

At the Jewish day camp we put on Fiddler on the Roof and I was in chorus! Everyday @ camp we had beautiful linen table cloths and a challah to start. We prayed for the bread first before we ate, the barucha

Notice how the only stories he references are from the Old Testament. That’s because Jews don’t believe that Jesus was the Messiah, leaving the New Testament a “hoax”. Just a little something I picked up on when being Motel in my high school play.

Leonard Frey got an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this role. I kind of think it was because he was was snubbed for 'Boys In The Band' the year prior, but how rangy he was.

Someone did care for me like this once but the sad part is I didn't like him and it broke his heart so I've felt guilty a bit over the years but he went on to marry a very wealthy girl so he's probably thanking me every day, but I wasn't going to marry some guy just because he had a crush on me.

My 13 y.o. grandson did a great job as Motel in “Fiddler On the Roof Jr” at his middle school this week. Unfortunately Motel’s beautiful joyful song was omitted from this version. It is such a celebratory, faith filled song that I think the editors of the junior version should seriously consider putting Motel’s song in this youth version as well.
