I remember doing the bottle dance with a local production of Fiddler right before covid. It was the best experience of my life. Many broken bottles. We did it legit, no magnets, no tape, just glass bottles with water and hats. Great memories.

I saw Fiddler on the Roof on stage in the mid 1960s in Sydney Australia ( now 57 years ago) My mum was enthralled by the films music & song & at the theatre we sat in a box which gave a wonderful view. The performers & actors were amazing ( im not sure if if was indeed Topol who took his film role of Rep Teviev, that we saw?) However the dancers who did the dance scenes incl this one The Bottle Dance were Russians On loan from some Ballet Company to do this F on the R tour. Seeing this dance live was breathtaking & all the hairs on my neck & arms stood up They even had the stage covered in sand or dust to re create the puffs from the Bottle Dancers & they danced much longer than the film scene! Wonderful, truely Wonderful. Anyone who feels depressed should listen to the song If I Were A Rich Man & watch Topol singing it Also to cheer your heart Watch this Bottle Dance scene! Its a real tonic for the soul! Peace 🇬🇧👧
This scene has always been one of my favourites of this movie. The dancing is powerful, and the scene so important considering how swiftly the film dives into the darker theme by the end of the wedding. Sunrise sunset was a perfect starter song to the whole wedding, considering how swiftly the dark sets in moments after this engertic celebration.
True meaning of life summarize perfectly in 3 minutes. Started carefree as a child. Eventually start and support a family like balancing bottle on head. You are never the only crazy one, everyone is balancing bottle on head. When you think things are at worst, wait till you have to shuffle forward, while kneeling, while balancing bottle on head. Finally when the bottle is off, celebrate like no tomorrow. Always lift me up watching this.
+Jon Chan ~ Having just seen an amateur dramatic presentation of this, and we could see that one bottle was wobbling, the audience gave a sigh of relief and started clapping along when they took the bottles off their heads. I think your point was felt. "Wit is sword - it is meant to make you feel the point as well as see it." [G.K.Cheterton]
I love this scene. My admiration for the dancers is off the scale. With my knees i can just about kneel down, but getting back up requires so much effort and furniture to hold on to. Oh the joys of getting older. My favourite film!
Until Tevye and Lazar fight, and then... Oops - almost had to put out a spoiler alert. The best wedding ever turns into the worst. I like to imagine that Motel and his bride are so happy together that they don't care.
Thank you to Jerry Bock who wrote the music for the Fiddler on the Roof production, and Sheldon Harnick for your brilliant lyrics. Thank you to John Williams for your arrangements and adapting the music so expertly for this film. Including the cast and crew, it was a perfect storm of talent.
I had the privilege of seeing this in London last year at the Playhouse, the production was off the Richter scale fabulous... the dancing left me breathless!
The sense is correct. This is quite obviously the best dance in the world and is indicative of the high art and culture which the Jewish tradition has to offer. And so it is a shame the Russian pogroms happened, as well as the expulsions elsewhere in Europe since the Middle Ages culminating in the Holocaust. Highlighting Jewish culture and its suffering is partly what makes Fiddler a great film.
Prejudice is a human frailty. Humans are fallen beings. We can strive for perfection, but ultimately that's all we can do. Btw, as a 21st century Gentile, this movie made such a horrible case for the Jewish tradition, made even worse by the fact that it's supposed to be the *essential* representation of the Jewish tradition, that it almost made an anti-Semite out of me.
I may be being simplistic here, but after the horrific antisemitic sentiments highlighted by WWII atrocities, this is an uplifting celebration of Jewish cultural values.
I like the authenticity of the wedding, men and women dancing in separate groups. I've never seen a bottle dance other than in this film. I can appreciate it so much more now than when I first saw it 50 years ago. I played Chava in a school performance in 9th grade.
Our local high school did this show a few years ago legit- no velcro or magnets- and there was an editorial about it in the local news. It was really cool.
I saw this play on broadway and this part and the other dances were the most amazing things. It was just so extremely beautiful. you could feel the stomps and dances (and I was far from the stage). you could just feel it in your soul. I just want my life to be watching this play.
This entire film blows me away. First time I saw it on a proper screen, I was maybe 5-7. There was a late weeknight showing at, I think, The Crest, in north Seattle. I had seen this film before. But, it was from off of TV in the late 1970's. So, edited and not the proper aspect ratio. So, my mom asks, "do you want to see this tonight in a real theater?" I said, "Yes!" She said, "okay. tonight is a school night. You still have to get up for school and you can't complain about being sleepy!" OMG. One of my most favorite childhood memories. We got home around 1am and I was really tired the next morning. But. OMG. Totally worth it. :D

One thing you have to say about Jews; when they dance, they put as much spirit into it as any other culture in the world and more than most!

Fiddler Isaac Stern played the music on the roof in the film Fiddler on the Roof. The world renowned violinist died 11 days after 9-11 in America.
And John Williams won his first Oscar for this!
1971 this should have been 'best picture of the year'....but it lost to 'French connection'.....go figure
I know right? This is one for the cultural artifacts of the world.
I'M GOING TO PAINT THE BOTTLE DANCE. I LOVE IT.IT
I've watched this film 17 times and have not tired of it yet.
It won MANY Oscars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember that. THIS should hae won.
I love the part after they take off the bottles even more, actually. The total abandon of their dancing is wonderful.
I've had the honor of being at a jewish wedding of a dear friend of mine and I can say: Jews really know how to party.
Just an absolutely fantastic movie!
I have seen a bottle dance for real in the 80’s in Israel at a Chassidic wedding. It was pretty neat
This dance is sometimes still preformed at jewish weddings, when my cousin got married my father and uncles did it
I saw this film 7 times & this scene is the best. Nothing more like this has been made again. Classic.
I'd forgotten how much I love this movie! Still brings a lot of joy and sadness. Perfect movie and this scene gives me chills in a good way! ❤

This is why racism is such a shame. We overlook all the beauty from other races and nations

Another fun fact: The entire film has that golden-brownish tint to it because there was a woman's nylon stretched over the camera lens.

When you realize an entire room filled with nothing but old Jewish guys in suits and ties can dance better then you.
