1982 was freshman high school year for myself and the other kids I hung out with. As the next couple years rolled on, the rock music of the day was Motley Crue (gag,) VH (we cherished them,) and the usual pop culture crap that MTV was peddling. When MJ’s Thriller debuted in ‘83, no one could believe that a 15 minute video was about to premiere. This was completely unheard of! Everyone was reveling in this stuff. I however was sinking deeper and deeper into the Zeppelin rabbit hole. It was LZ II for me also that caught my ear. Like Ged, it was WIAWSNB that made me wanna pick up a electric bass. All the other kids thought the Crue were the best band and tried to convince me. It didn’t work. I was steeping in John Paul Jones’ masterful Hammond B3 playing in the ending of Thank You. As cold chills made hair on the back of my neck stand because of this record, I came to realize that there was no other band. Zeppelin had no competition. They were the ultimate unit. The perfect band at the perfect time.
