I wonder if Neil has a letter he wrote to the fans that will be released sometime.
@@Acujeremy I doubt it. For as much as he appreciated the fans, he did like to keep a barrier between him and then
Everytime I hear Geddy talking I realize I should be more polite and treat people better.
what a great statement. We should all be like this...Hats off to you Rodrigo.
I had the exact same sentiment as the video was concluding. The epitome of class.
What a lovely Man xxx
A class act.
I've met him three times at autograph signings and he was always very nice. The last time was in Chicago at the release of my favorite headache and the line outside the Record Shop must have been a quarter mile long and it was freezing out and I was worried he would leave before he got to us. I thanked him for staying around so late and he looked at me and he said Thank you for waiting!
Who else feels fortunate to have seen Rush perform live and to have known their music? They were such great musicians. RIP, Neil.
I do. Saw them in 1979 at the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands where I live.
It was the 'Hemispheres'
tour! Breathtaking!
A revelation for me as a
musician.
Alex had cut his finger but
played to perfection!
Very dedicated guys.😊👍
Me too. I’ve seen them dozens of times live, Niel was my role model as an early drummer when I was 12 years old. I never had the pleasure of meeting them in person, but they’re terrific human beings by all reports.
I remember fondly when Alex was a guest actor on the series called “trailer Park boys.“ He was freaking hilarious.
Rush was my very first concert, as a high schooler 1981. I never had a chance to see them again, but that was truly one of the most impactful experiences of my life
@@Chris_the_Dingo My first concert, as well. Junior in HS. It was the Permanent Waves tour, Mar. 7, 1980. I heard the 2112 album a few days before the show and was hooked.
I also saw shows for Moving Pictures, Grace Under Pressure, Presto, and Snakes and Arrows. Greatest band, nay, orchestra, that I've ever seen. That 3 musicians could make that much music still amazes me to this day. Their music has been a part of my life ever since that first show.
@@johnsampson2544 that's great! We must be about the same age. I started getting into them when Permanent Waves came out. I guess it was the Moving Pictures tour when I saw them live...Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, etc?
I truly feel that the members of Rush are three of the greatest musicians and humans we have seen. The body of work, the musicianship, the respect, the relationship with the fans, their relationship with each other. If musicians can be role models, then they surely are three of the greatest you could be inspired by. Peace be to Neil.
They showed it was possible to be a rock star and ordinary at the same time. They didn't put on airs or provide fodder for the tabloids. What they did was straight-ahead, no-punches-pulled, and utterly professional. Few bands have done as much.
RUSH SUCK'S !…
Hard to argue with that...3 superb musicians.
Classy, talented, down to Earth, and sometimes goofy. Just all around decent people. You can’t help but like and respect them.
I agree
In hindsight, he's probably sitting there knowing Neil had cancer but kept it secret for his privacy.
They all knew for three years.
He was always a private man and they loved him.
Yep
It's kind of like this interview I heard with Carlos Aldomar (hope I I didn't destroy his name to bad) talking about working on Bowie's last album
They have always had so much love & respect for each other.
Yeah they knew it. It had to be hard to sit there in these interviews in the last few years and maintain composure.
Geddy = soft spoken, down to earth. The exact opposite of the 'rock star' personna. A hell of a guy.
Imagine if Axl Rose had this persona. Fuckin' a.
Carlos Matos
SUPER nice gentleman. He will talk to anybody. 👍😎
He’s a typical Canadian guy of our generation. Lots of guys here like him and he seems to me like someone I’d be friends with. Down to earth, kind and real. Quiet but would come to your aid in a flash.
@@shizuokaBLUES lol i was just going to say, it's very Canadian of him real respect to one he was so close to. You hear in his voice sadness
None of the three of them are arrogant, they are true articulate, humble, grateful gentlemen...
I'm only a casual Rush fan. I never followed them closely or got too deeply into their albums, but I always admired them for their musicianship. Listening to them in interviews, and especially here, how Geddy speaks so movingly and respectfully about his bandmates, I am equally impressed by their character and integrity.
I'm the same way. I am much more of a metal fan, but I always liked Rush. I briefly met Geddy when he did a book signing in Brookline MA for the Big Book of Bass. I honestly barely remember it because of a severe migraine, but my friend reminds me he greeted everyone warmly and genuinely.
I think they were great for their first 8 albums, and then got super bland.
The R40 Tour was great though; the second set after intermission was sort of like a combination of "Exit Stage Left" and "All The World's A Stage".
The trajectory of their musical evolution from their inception through to the early 80s was a progression from a fairly straightforward and not particularly complex - though _really_ good - bluesy hard rock/proto-metal sound to an increasingly complex mix of hard rock with proggy elements that eventually blossomed into an incredibly unique sound.
Unfortunately, in my opinion at least, whatever their motivations or lack thereof were, after "Moving Pictures" their sound changed radically and for the worse, becoming a very typically 80s overproduced synth dominated band.
yeah, you're unique
they are all 3 very classy guys...
Been a fan since I was 5 and I'm 45 now. It meant everything to know they were always out there fighting the good fight.
Poor Geddy's heart has to break a little more each time he has to discuss this while being so respectful to Neil's privacy. What great friend he and Alex are / were to Neil. Rush is a great example for not only musicians but also humans in general to follow.
Geddy and Alex were more to Neil than just bandmates, and even more than just friends. They were his protectors. His whole life, they stood between Neil and the general public, which was a huge relief for such a private person. When tragedy struck, Geddy and Alex waited patiently until their friend came back to them. And when Neil was diagnosed, Geddy and Alex shut down the band in a graceful manner, without ever revealing the truth. They took all the questions, interviews, and all the heat as to why the band ended. What a beautiful friendship...
Well said. I wish I treated my closest friends the way they treated each other

@@WendyMcCor696 jeremy why so harsh? Its only the internet nothing to get all bothered about.
They had stopped full-scale touring before the Filoblastoma diagnosis, but after Neil Peart’s arthritis and tendinitis made him have to stop. When Alex Lifeson announced in 2018 that Rush was done, it was most likely after the diagnosis, and by the time that this interview took place, Geddy Lee could speak with after-knowledge of the full extent of the challenges facing his band-mate. Until 2018, there was the implied hope that stand-alone concerts would still be possible.
Geddy Lee clearly knew something here that the rest of us didn’t until this last week.
I have no doubt that they were informed of his passing on the same day, and kept quiet to help the family grieve and prepare for the onslaught.

Watching this in 2021, and now knowing what Geddy knew about Neil, gives to his words a whole new perspective. You can hear the sadness and pain he was feeling, an it breaks my heart. Rush has, and always will be, a tremendous influence on me as a musician and a person and I think many others are with me on that.

Rush ending is like a family member dying. When I first saw on Wikipedia that Rush *was* a Canadian rock band I almost cried. They've had that much of an impact on my life.
How long were you a Rush fan before you found out they were Canadian?
@Batphink Reynolds He emphasized the word "was". It was seeing Rush referred to in the past tense that made him almost cry.
"Rush ending is like a family member dying" - you're a fucking idiot, kid!
Tio MGTOW Actually, some people (like me) were extremely impacted by Rush ending. If you don’t care, then why are you here?
Me too. Philosophically speaking, Rush raised me.
One of the most talented bands in music history. I saw RUSH in Toledo, Ohio Sports Arena for the Grace Under Pressure Tour. Class act, well spoken and extremely positive people. 🙏
My wife and I went to their 2nd last show, at Irvine Meadows, CA. The first RUSH concert for either of us. Absolutely phenomenal, easily the best live concert ever experienced (and I've seen Pink Floyd, U2, Midnight Oil, INXS, Rolling Stones, Ray Charles and more) ... such a treat. It does send chills knowing now what Neil was going through at that moment, and it's hard to think about. We miss him so much.
I miss Irvine Meadows. Curse the Irvine Company for replacing it with apartments.
I have never cared when other bands stopped playing or a member had passed away but I was almost in tears when I heard about Neil. Rush is a band that never gave me the sense that they were untouchable superstars who were so much better than we mortals. There was an actual sense that these were people who might just show up at your backyard bbq and sit down and have a beer with you and talk about their lives and their music and whatnot. I'm mostly sad that I never got to see them live. Money and opportunity were never in the same place at the right time. On the bright side they left us with over forty years of amazing music.
I seen them live and when any band or artist music n vocals can sound like on the albums themselves without lip sync,to me they've earned tha right 2B on that pedestal of being called "1 of the greatest"

We will not see their like again. 40+ years of absolute magic, brilliance, humility and class. The best of the best, in my humble opinion.
You know when i look back from the time in my life that i discovered Rush’s music, until the time they ended. Over the years i grew to appreciate their music and what they stood for. Theres been many bands who had more overwhelming successful periods, but Rush as a whole body of work, from start to finish is about as steady, and meaningful as anything in entertainment. I think any of us could parallel whatever we do in our lives to the careers of these musicians and from that standpoint Rush was a success that few bands or musicians could ever hope to be! I greatly appreciate the contribution of these great artists, and i look at them fondly as a truly legendary band in rock n roll history.
I saw the final Rush show, and I remember talking about this right after the show how this may have been the best I have ever heard Neil play and he keeps getting better to levels I may have never seen from any drummer. To hear Geddy say Neil struggled to play at his best is remarkable. There was no way to know that as an audience member.
RUSH is the greatest band ever!! NO other band has the talent that these 3 brought to the table. They didn't need to sing about sex, violence, drug use or any of the crap we hear today. They didn't use profanity. They didn't insult other bands. They started out as a class act and they ended as a class act.

I can see a day where I may possibly have to stop playing, but I’m hoping that when that time comes they’ll have to pry the instruments from my grip before I give up. My god how hard that must’ve been been for Geddy knowing what was probably going to happen to Neil
They're typical "Working Men", they come from a different era where the work ethic was the modus operandi. But yes, they set an example for their peers and anyone who cared to observe and listen. Certainly many of the die-hard fans will have benefited by following their example.

Not only were you all blessed with ridiculous musical talents, but you were blessed with each other, and us die-hard Rush fans. Yes, I will miss seeing my Canadian friends live, and the excitement of opening and listening to a new Rush album. But I tell everyone that I have enough Rush to last me a lifetime, so I'm okay with that. Thanks for all of your amazing songs. They have been an inspiration to me and the soundtrack to my life.
Geddy is humble as always. Would love to hear directly from Peart.
Sean Walsh that’ll never happen
Cooper Winters. Maybe in a book someday. Writing is his favored medium for communication. He’s fantastic storyteller, I recommend you read his books.
Amazing how many interviews Peart has given for someone who normally doesn't like that kind of stuff, and for being the most private and reclusive of all the band members.
Even the ending of such a world class act is humble and honest. Best band ever.
Rush! Always perfect always perfectionist and always classy! You boys will be very sorely missed! God bless you and thank you for the lifetime of memories.
In the Summer of 2112, I mean 1977, my friend Ed walked up to me with his 8-track The Cube. He popped the tape in and we sat and listened. Listening still, what a great band.
Eddie Trunk allowed Geddy Lee to get in a few words about Rush ending. Kind of him.
As a drummer who has been playing in bands for over 30 years, I'd like to say that class acts like Geddy are more rare than hen's teeth.
Guy asks a question then answers it for three minutes and doesn't let Geddy speak. Props to Geddy for being patient and still answering so articulately.
Man, such a class act, all the way around. Eagerly waiting to see what happens next, Geddy.
Rush is unquestionably the greatest Rock Group there ever was till this point. Their music was deep, complex,.. and spoke to EVERYONE in an uplifting way. R.I.P
Total class act, all three of them. Talented, yet humble.
What a thoughtful, caring, genuine, and dignified human being.
I agree, well said 👍
I would not have been able to keep it together here like Geddy did, knowing what he knew.....testament to his professionalism and his friendship to keep that secret.
People retire, that's life.
Love you guys.
Still remembered the day when a good friend of mine introduced me to RUSH. True instant magic within seconds. These songs will be with me forever, and all great memories. Thank you RUSH for being such an inspiration and help through life. You guys will forever be the worlds #1 rock band without doubt!
m1kael I was young when I heard Tom Sawyer and I couldn’t stop thinking about it the next day because you had nothing but radio then but I couldn’t imagine what was yet to came
This has been and still is my absolute favorite band. I grew up listening to this band. Moving Pictures tour was my very first concert as well I was able to take my 8-year-old son to R30. I was also able to take my best friend (who passed) to the Time Machine tour and sit front row center at Red Rocks. It was a moment that he never forgot. Thanks to a fantastic threesome that will forever be my favorite!!
I truly love those guys. How could I not? They’ve been a part of my life since college. Thirty years later I still listen to Rush all the time. Geddy’s voice, Alex’s surprises, and Neill’s brain, never ceases to amaze me. Put them together and it’s just timeless mystery and joy. Their friendship and bond to each other is palpable and their fans love them for that. Thank you Geddy, for giving the world such happiness. Your songs will ring through the ages.
Rush might not be my number one favorite but they are the greatest band ever in terms of musical perfection every single one of them pulled as much as they could from their instrument and did it beautifully
Absolutely right!
Danieltsss Blackmouth
Rush is my 4th favourite band, but srsly, Rush’s songs still sound so unbelievably modern. They were WAY ahead of their time, the most out of any band I’ve ever heard. YYZ and 2112 sound like they r still ahead of even our current time as well. It’s ridiculous how absolutely incredible these 3 were at musical perfection.
Rush is my #1
Well said:)
Danieltsss Blackmouth You’ve probably never heard of Dream Theater, for such a bold statement. Rush was a major influence on them, but DT are far better musicians. Ask people who actually play instruments.
Eddie asks a question and then proceeds to respond to his own question. Stop. Doing. That.
I think he just likes to hear himself talk. If Geddy did Howard it would be a lot different.
Yeah he went on for a full minute before he finally shut up
Interviewer: "Answer this question like this, because this is the answer I want to hear..."
Yeah I don't see how this guy still has a job... I mean he's blabbing on and on about bands that are over 50 years old and are retiring!!
How can you go on and on commenting on the same bands over and over!!
@@American-Motors-Corporation I nearly threw my phone at the TV years ago when That Metal Show was answering fan questions and one of them was about why they never featured Death Metal/Black Metal (i.e, current) bands and Eddie was like "This is MY show where we talk about MY favorite bands."
Geddy, Alex, and Neil are the sweetest three men in Rock-n-Roll ! I’ve been listening to RUSH since 1977 and have seen them 12 times in Detroit throughout their career. There is no better live band and I’ve seen everyone, I’m from the home of Rock-n-Roll ! There is no better Rock-n-Roll audience in the world ! I’m sure if Geddy and Alex this post they might agree ? RUSH’S music guided me through some pretty heavy shit in life ! I don’t think I’d where I am today without their music !! I miss Neil so much ! His beautiful drumming and attention to detail was absolutely amazing ! A true perfectionist at everything he did in life ! Just a wonderful man ! All three of them are just incredible human beings! I love you guys ! I miss RUSH so much !
