  • In October 2019, the Churnet Valley Railway planned Super Power Saturday, which would feature three USATC S160s working together for the first time since World War Two. Unfortunately, due to flooding which washed some of the line away, the one day event was cancelled. Follow an appeal and the railway being repaired, they announced Super Power Weekend Take Two, which had the same premise as the original event, but now over two days!
    The event saw four non-stop round trips featuring the three S160s from Kingsley & Froghall up the Cauldon Low branch to Ipstones. Joining the two residents was recently returned to service S160 No 2253 'Omaha', which will eventually move to the Dartmouth Steam Railway. Each day culminated in a triple header, with 'Omaha' leading the two residents to Ipstones.
    The full locos line up was:-

    | USATC S160 No 5197
    | USATC S160 No 6046
    | BR Class 33 No 33021 'Eastleigh'
    | BR Class 33 No 33102 'Sophie'

    Fabulous locos, sights and sounds superbly captured to convey the atmosphere and enthusiasm. Particularly liked the long shot looking down on all 3 S160s. I generally prefer short videos but this leaves me wanting more. Kind regards, Bob.

    Superb video, those S160s really don't hold back! Looked like a great event, well worth the efforts on everyone involved, especially considering the flooding the first time round!

    The wailing sound of US whistle sounds strange against the backdrop of the English countryside.?

      It may sound strange, but it is absolutely delightful. I also prefer the sound of American Diesel chime air horns- much better than the squeaky 2-tones on British trains.

      nigel mitchell well not sent back over, more like never sent over lots of bases and docks had rail yards and the army switchers were the standard use that Lima and Alco would make for the ally effort. The age of steam round house and Morristown and Erie has one in pieces. Oh I live in NJ.

    Brilliant !!! Is it true that the was only 4 of these engines sent during the war ??

    • @MervynPartin
      @MervynPartin 4 роки тому +1

      There was a lot more than 4. I even heard a tale from a railwayman I knew that one of the British railways (not mentioning the Great Western by name, of course) hid one away before it was sent on to Europe. A nice tale, even if completely untrue.
