Funny how McClane says he was "smoking cigarettes and watching captain kangaroo" when the song that contains those lyrics (Flowers on the wall by The Statler Brothers) was playing on the radio when his character Butch in Pulp Fiction, which came out a year before this movie, was driving his car when he "ran across" Marcelus Wallace in the street... before running him over. If you're hungry for more classic Bruce Willis, The Last Boy Scout is a pretty good one. Written by the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon if I'm not mistaken.
This is one of those movies that didn't make an impact upon initial release but gained a much greater appreciation over time. It takes the Die Hard formula and completely opens it up. Instead of being contained to a single building or an airport, it's a massive fast-paced thrill ride spread out across one of the busiest cities in the world.
@@OfficialMediaKnights90's action movies really were something special. If you're looking to keep the theme going, I recommend you check out the Nicolas Cage 90's action movie holy trinity: The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off.
This one is probably my favorite of the original trilogy. It almost gives me Lethal Weapon and Speed vibes but more gritty?...maybe? Live Free or Die Hard is another great entry in this franchise. I think they released an Unrated Cut for that one. Another great film is "The Warriors" from 1979, but I would recommend only the Theatrical Cut of The Warriors if you can find that version. This one is exactly that! Non stop action and fun! Adding your suggestions to the list. Thanks for letting us know the versions as well! We hope you have an amazing Christmas holiday! ❤️
The only difference between the theatrical cut and the Director's cut of The Warriors is the DC has a prologue and some transitions done in a comic panel art style. Other than that there were no changes to the story or the flow of the movie.
@@moviemetalhead The art style is great, but the transitions in the DC are awful and ruins the ending as well as the tension in other scenes. It's the best example of how a Director's Cut is sometimes a bad idea.
Real talk, one of my favorite understated elements about this film is that all of John's team were competent and had GOATED moments. Whether it's the two that run into the building to help the kids stuck thinking A BOMB WAS GONNA GO OFF or the bomb homie not bailing when he hears that there's still kids stuck inside or even the sheer fact that the captain was not the stereotypical red taping dick... it's such a cool little detail that shows that John may have picked adopted this courageous behavior or inspires this amongst his colleagues.
The nonchalance of Simon taking the gun from Zeus, telling him "you have to take the safety off" and then shooting him, is just cold. I miss villains who just WERE villains.
This is a such a classic film, I also love the next film "Live Free or Die Hard (2007)" with Bruce Willis, Justin Long and Timothy Olyphant. As you love cinematography I would love you to do a reaction to the film "1917" This is considered as one of 2019's year's best films.
I loved the enthusiasm you had during this watch, so much glee. The director, John McTiernan, is a master of bringing multiple storylines together so seamlessly. He did Die Hard 1 & 3, Predator, Hunt for Red October... and I highly recommend his cool heist flick, 1999's Thomas Crown Affair, with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo... it's SO GOOD. I hope you continue with the next Die Hard instalment, seeing as there are none done after that ;)
I love when zeus leaves his gold bar in the last car and he says "man that guy was pissed"...mcclaine says "he'll be happy when he looks in the back seat" Zeus.."AWW MAN THAT WAS MY GOLD BAR DAMN"...😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is my favorite one🤣 The banter and chemistry between Samuel and Bruce is just amazing and this movie gives the fast pacing and insane vibe almost all the time. So much excitement and fun!
4:34 the kid on the right is a young Aldis Hodge. He plays MC Ren on the movie "Straight Outta Compton". The kid on the left is his brother Edwin Hodge who stars as Dante in "The Purge" movies.
My favorite Bruce Willis movie is by far The Fifth Element. An all star cast. Loaded with action, comedy, love story, sci fiction. An awesome movie to watch.
So here is a fun fact. That very offensive sign was actually CGI. They didn't want to risk people actually coming over and starting a fight. But that also means some channels changed the message to be less offensive.. and more pointless. One of the reads just says "I hate everyone" which I doubt would have the same impact from people around the neighborhood.
I’m so glad you’re going through the series quickly. I really hope you’ll do 4 as well. My fav action movie of all time. Also starring Justin Long who’s just so adorable.
Spoiler alert: Four of the five die hard movies or holiday movies. The first two are Christmas movies I believe this third movie takes place around New Year's and the fourth film is a Independence Day type of film. Even if the movies do not specifically place them in these category.
“Working on a fat suspension, *smoking cigarettes watching captain kangaroo*” Bruce Willis sings this exact phrase in pulp fiction before he hits Marcellus Wallace with the car.
To add to that scene in Pulp Fiction: The woman Marcellus shoots on accident is the same woman Mr. Pink carjacked in Reservoir Dogs. That's why she was walking.
@@Hype679 🫨 I love it!!! Also, another Pulp fiction adjacent fun fact; in the movie broken arrow, John travolta says “I said goddamn” after an explosion, echoing what Uma’s character says doing blow at jack rabbit slims - the FBI agent chasing travolta in broken arrow is the very same actor who played Brett, Marcellus Wallace’s business “associate” who Vincent and Jules visit during breakfast that fateful morning 😂
this one is my favorite. bigger playground, had the best companion in the franchise(zeus>powell... no offence), a villain just as charming as the first one and just as effective as second one, the second most creative action sequences right after the 4th one.
The most unrealistic part are the bobcats that carry the gold. That amount of gold per bucket would weigh at least 6,000lb, more than the capacity than any skid steer loader can handle. Not to mention the trucks which usually carry only about 30,000lb. That would equate to a cube of gold only 3ft wide.
*_Die Hard 3 is the absolute BEST Die Hard of them all: Having Hans’ brother as the vilain (Brilliantly played by academy award winner Jeremy Iron to boot) instead of some random terrorist and the addition of the OG MoFo, Sam Jackson, to the cast is unequalled in the franchise! (And it is refreshing that McLane’s boss, while well aware of John’s flaws, is not one of those Police sergeants who just yells at McLane throughout the whole movie and becomes an obstacle to the hero cop solving the problem._* *_While personally, I like part 4 also, it was just too difficult for them to best part 3. My ranking of the first 4 Die Hard goes:_* *1st: Die Hard 3* *2nd: Die Hard 1* *3rd: Die Hard 4* *4th: Die Hard 2* *_Beyond that though, I never watched Die Hard 5 as the very premise of the movie seemed just too dumb to be worth the time (so I might be ignorantly wrong, but I’d rather be that than proven right!)_*
I'm glad you guys enjoyed. This one's always been my favorite, too. Of course, it was the first R-rated movie I snuck into as a kid so I may be biased, but just top tier in every department. For another excellent but criminally overlooked Bruce Willis action movie, please watch The Last Boy Scout if you haven't already. Tony Scott at his damned dirtiest and meanest.
So glad yall liked this one. I was never a big fan of the second one but the third is an excellent finish. If you want, check out the alternate ending. It's so much better than the theatrical ending (although that one is still fun). Also, John McTiernan directed this one as well as the original Die Hard and Predator. He is probably one of the top-3 best action directors of all time. Dude was a master at shooting action.
On another note, you can look this fact up, when the script was written, it was first picked up to be a Lethal Weapon movie, that’s why Zeus was created because all of the dialogue was written for Murtaugh and had to be changed once it was picked up as a Die Hard film. They then had to write in Location changes to New York
There is a great line right at the beginning where we get a hint as to what this is about. Simon: I would not give up McClane for all the gold in your Fort Knox.”
There's an alternate ending that they fully shot but decided not to use as it would have changed the whole tone of the movie and McClane more specifically. It's a cool ending and it would have replaced the entire part in Canada. You can find it here on YT. Great channel!
The Die Hard franchise is so great. I love them all for different reasons. (Well, maybe not all of them. The 5th film doesn't exist for me. Its the only one I saw once and never again.) As always, I very much enjoyed going on this ride with you both. Thanks for what you do and the smiles you bring. I'm sure your list is very long, but another couple of movies that I thought the second was as fun as rhe first is Red and Red 2. Our man Bruce is also in those movies and there is a great combination of hunor and action.
I always go back and forth between this one and the first one on which is my favorite. Both are such amazing action films. Looking forward to your reaction to the 4th film.
Simon's "Santa Claus" remark in the beginning was just him trying to be sarcastic. If you listen to him say it again and imagine him rolling his eyes, you'll hear it.
Great reaction, Knights! One of the all time great action movies. If you want some more fun Bruce Willis action, check out "Red" and its sequel, I know that you would really enjoy them. 👍💯
Fun fact... This was originally written as a spec script that Jonathan Hensleigh tried to sell called "Simon Says." After a few studios took an interest in it, Fox bought the script and had him re-write the main character as John McClane, add in the sub plot of Simon being Hans Gruber's brother and the part about him and Holly being separated to explain her absence. In the original version of the film, the two main villain gets away and then McClane ends up tracking them down in Hungary several months later and forces him to play a game of Russian Roulette with a rocket launcher using his own riddles against him. The execs at Fox felt both that McClane was being too cruel and didn't like that the day abruptly ended and picked up almost a year later for one last scene and little action, so it was re-written and the actors came back to shoot the helicopter sequence. Jonathan Hensleigh would also later go on to co-write and direct the very underrated 2004 Punisher film.
Sometimes (but only sometimes these days, sadly), I really remember why I used to love America and Americans (having lived there for some years when I was little, you see). You two lovely people are the why I remember. And what I suddenly remember is all good :)
One more... the fourth brought another dimension we might all miss if we don't watch it... the internet age. After the fourth, I'm not sure the fifth or beyond is worth your time.
Fun fact: this was an original spec script by writer Jonathan Hensleigh called "Simon Says", that Fox purchased off him for an at-the-time incredibly high price, got to some basic re-writing and Bob's your uncle - Die Hard 3! Hensleigh wrote a few more scripts, but the recognition from this little piece of business is what landed him his directorial debut with the 2004 Thomas Jane version of The Punisher.
The way that everyone plays off of each other could be used as a master class in building dialogue and engaging an audience based on words. The interaction is hilarious. Plus the comedy is top notch between the physical comedy and the lines.
27:05 Emptying the 5 gal jug into the 3 gal jug would leave TWO gals. The proper steps is as follows: 1. Fill the five-gallon jug with water. 2. Empty three gallons into the three-gallon jug, leaving two gallons in the five-gallon jug. 3. Empty the three-gallon jug completely, and then refill it with the remaining two gallons from the five-gallon jug. 4. Fill the five-gallon jug again. 5. Pour it into the three-gallon jug, filling it. 6. The five-gallon jug is left with exactly four gallons of water.
The original film treatment was called Simon Says, and the Zeus character was supposed to be female. When the script was rewritten, Laurence Fishburne was tagged to play Zeus. Ironically, Fishburne turned down the chance (on the advice of his agent) to play Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction, which went to Jackson. Supposedly, while Fishburne was negotiating to receive a bigger paycheck to play Zeus, one of the producers attended the Pulp Fiction premiere and decided Jackson would be a much better fit to play the character.
The OG is still the best, but this one is so much damn fun! Sam Jackson ABSOLUTELY brings so much to this installment. But tbh the 4th one is my second favorite. Very relatable in this tech-y day and age. And Justin Long is a great addition to the series as well surprisingly. I just love the whole series. Every movie is a banger. Except the 5th. Don’t even come close to the other 4. You’re okay to end with the 4th one lol
RIP Anthony Peck, who plays Det. Ricky Walsh (Badge 6991) in DH3. He played an LAPD cop in DH1 too (think dabbing gauze on Al’s forehead and other scenes). He was in several John McTiernan films, including The Hunt For Red October and Last Action Hero. He died of cancer the year after this film was released. 🙏🏻
History of the script for this movie. (How this movie was almost Lethal Weapon 4) Screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh sold a screenplay tentatively titled Simon Says to 20th Century Fox in 1992 or ‘93. The original screenplay was much like what we eventually saw in Die Hard With a Vengeance, except that Simon's motives would be exactly as they seemed, just seeking revenge (so basically the entire second half of the movie was unique to the Die Hard script). Hensleigh also included a scene specifically at a New York intersection so he could watch them film from his apartment. A few years later Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver were looking to make a fourth Lethal Weapon movie, they contacted Fox and tried to buy the script. However, the sale never actually occurred (they didn’t end up finding a good enough script for Lethal Weapon 4 until 1998).

If you're hungry for more classic Bruce Willis, The Last Boy Scout is a pretty good one. Written by the guy who wrote Lethal Weapon if I'm not mistaken.
Yes, they need last boy scout and fifth element. I hope they do those
A long kiss goodnight is a heck of a movie with an epic cast ! Love you guys as reviewers!!🎉
awesome movie!
It was the highest grossing film of the year...
What? This movie was a HUGE hit, made a ton of money.
I love the fourth one so much, please don’t stop here!
Jeremy Irons has played many great roles, but I will always remember him as the voice of Scar in The Lion King. 😊
90's action movies are the best...especially this one.
They really are, we've been having a blast!
@@OfficialMediaKnights90's action movies really were something special. If you're looking to keep the theme going, I recommend you check out the Nicolas Cage 90's action movie holy trinity: The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off.
One of the best sequels of all time. You can watch 1 and 3 back to back and it's perfect.
I hope you guys have a great Christmas, by the way! 😊
I think I forgot just how damn good this 3rd instalment is.... The chemistry between them is electrifying !
Yeah its funny how they made Samuel L. Jackson play a angry bitter racist black man.🤣🤣🤣
Scar is amazing in this movie.
I hope you continue with the next Die Hard instalment, seeing as there are none done after that ;)
I do like John McTiernan's 1999 film: 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas. Cinematography is amazing and it has such tense atmosphere.
The Thomas Crown Affair is EXCELLENT!! Really hope they react to that one.
@@meadmaker4525 SOMEone has to eventually, lol. It's so much fun. And that giveaway in the intro credits. SO good.
personally, die hard 4 (live free die hard) is my favorite.
I love when zeus leaves his gold bar in the last car and he says "man that guy was pissed"...mcclaine says "he'll be happy when he looks in the back seat"
Zeus.."AWW MAN THAT WAS MY GOLD BAR DAMN"...😂😂😂😂😂😂
That guy is lucky as hell! 😂
This is my favorite one🤣 The banter and chemistry between Samuel and Bruce is just amazing and this movie gives the fast pacing and insane vibe almost all the time. So much excitement and fun!
This one is my favorite. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson are so good together.
4:34 the kid on the right is a young Aldis Hodge. He plays MC Ren on the movie "Straight Outta Compton". The kid on the left is his brother Edwin Hodge who stars as Dante in "The Purge" movies.
Edwin Hodge is now an FBI agent on FBI: Most Wanted
That Elevator scene reminds me of Captain America.
I Gad the same thought while watching! Maybe that Captain America scene was a reference to this. Either way both of those scenes are epic!
Congratulations! You got to number 3. Feel free to stop now to avoid the disappointment of the inevitable steep downhill slope.
Now, watch Live Free or Die Hard Unrated Version. It shows everything.
Oh heck yes, we can't wait for that one!! Heard amazing things about it!
I agree, the unrated version is way closer to the R rated Die Hard movies than what we got in theaters.
“Working on a fat suspension, *smoking cigarettes watching captain kangaroo*”
Bruce Willis sings this exact phrase in pulp fiction before he hits Marcellus Wallace with the car.
Good catch! I never realized that before this video and was hoping someone commented this.
The line is from a 1965 Statler Brothers country song called Flowers On the Wall
@@55itsme 🫶🏼 good call - their second biggest hit was “I’ll go to my grave loving you” which could have easily been John and Holly’s wedding song 😂
YAAASSSS!!! Nobody ever does this one! The BEST of the sequels. Glad it's getting some exposure. Happy holidays, guys!
The "Stick your well laid plan up your well laid ass" line never gets old😂
Nor does the one 'simon says you gotta go!'
this one is my favorite. bigger playground, had the best companion in the franchise(zeus>powell... no offence), a villain just as charming as the first one and just as effective as second one, the second most creative action sequences right after the 4th one.
The actor who played Simon is an Academy Award winning thespian, Jeremy Irons
Yes. You guys are seeing it. Right on.
(And it is refreshing that McLane’s boss, while well aware of John’s flaws, is not one of those Police sergeants who just yells at McLane throughout the whole movie and becomes an obstacle to the hero cop solving the problem._*
*_While personally, I like part 4 also, it was just too difficult for them to best part 3. My ranking of the first 4 Die Hard goes:_*
*1st: Die Hard 3*
*2nd: Die Hard 1*
*3rd: Die Hard 4*
*4th: Die Hard 2*
*_Beyond that though, I never watched Die Hard 5 as the very premise of the movie seemed just too dumb to be worth the time (so I might be ignorantly wrong, but I’d rather be that than proven right!)_*
If you haven't figured it out yet, you heard Simon's voice on The Lion King. He voiced Scar.
It was written for Brandon Lee and scrapped after his passing.
One of my favorite Die Hard films ever made! Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson made a very good team!
The Simon is Jeremy Irons. Same guy who did the voice for Scar in Lion King. That’s why his voice is so good.
There is a great line right at the beginning where we get a hint as to what this is about. Simon: I would not give up McClane for all the gold in your Fort Knox.”
Of all the Die Hard films this one’s without a doubt the best one in my opinion!!!! The Samuel L Jackson vs Bruce Willis lines are truly priceless!!!!
You recognize the voice from a number of things, Jeremy Irons is in tonnes of stuff. But many people recognize it from Scar, from The Lion King.
There's an alternate ending that they fully shot but decided not to use as it would have changed the whole tone of the movie and McClane more specifically. It's a cool ending and it would have replaced the entire part in Canada. You can find it here on YT. Great channel!
5:08 - They really filmed this scene in Harlem. But the board was blank and the words were CGI'd in afterwards.
The Die Hard sequel that is at the same level as the OG. Arguably even better!
Did you notice Graham Greene, the native american cop? Great actor.....also played Arlen Bitterbuck in the Green Mile.
Also the old native hermit in The Last of Us
I noticed him immediately after seeing him play Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves.
The Die Hard franchise is so great. I love them all for different reasons. (Well, maybe not all of them. The 5th film doesn't exist for me. Its the only one I saw once and never again.)
As always, I very much enjoyed going on this ride with you both.
New York City feels like a legit character in this movie, its my favorite of all the Die Hard flicks
The proper steps is as follows:
HAHA! "Looks like My boss in Christmas" I love it 😂😂😂
All the Die Hard movies are good.. Even the ones after this! Dont listen to the ppl in the comments talkin trash
"I NEED to answer this phone!" Very much like when he "NEEDS a drink of water" in The Incredibles.
Watch The Long Kiss Goodnight, That is another Samuel L Jackson classic
RIP Anthony Peck, who plays Det. Ricky Walsh (Badge 6991) in DH3. He played an LAPD cop in DH1 too (think dabbing gauze on Al’s forehead and other scenes). He was in several John McTiernan films, including The Hunt For Red October and Last Action Hero. He died of cancer the year after this film was released. 🙏🏻
GET THROUGH THE TRILOGY, YESSSSS!!! 😊RIGHT ON, YOU STUCK WITH IT!💯 SO GLAD YOU GUYS ENJOYED THIS TRIP!👍
History of the script for this movie. (How this movie was almost Lethal Weapon 4)
Screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh sold a screenplay tentatively titled Simon Says to 20th Century Fox in 1992 or ‘93.
My favorite die hard movie. Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson team up is awesome
I love the call back to Pulp Fiction which came out a year earlier when Bruce sang "Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" He says the same line in this film. It's also funny that Sam Jackson was in Pulp Fiction as well.
The legendary Graham Greene✊🏽
Sooo much fun guys. Thanks a bunch, it's been years since I watched this. Sad how Bruce has now lost touch. He gave us many years of entertainment. Thanks for your reaction.
This one and the first one are neck and neck for my favorite Die Hards.
The summer this movie was shot, I was working at Central Park Summer Stage and would get lunch on the west side of the park every day, and remember seeing the filming of the scenes related to the park. I look back fondly because I love this movie, and it captured the vibe of that summer, and how freaking hot it was.
Love the film, love the reaction! Thank you for watching so soon, you will not regret watching the remaining films. So Amazing! Die Hard Films Are Masterpieces. 'Live Free Or Die Hard' & 'A Good Day To Die Hard' are the next ones.
I think you should watch the rest of them and dont listen to what other people have to say. Just form your own opinion cuz although some are better than others, it's still Die Hard!
"Smoking cigarettes, watching Captain Kangaroo" is a reference to the lyrics of The Statler Brothers, "Flowers on The Wall, AKA what's playing on the radio in "Pulp Fiction" when Marsellus Wallace crosses the street in front Bruce.
I am so ready to watch this right now with some beers and some christmas sandwiches and watch one of the best reaction channels. Cheers and merry christmas!
This warms our hearts! Thank you for your support. We hope you enjoy! Merry Christmas!
You two always do great reactions. Hope 2024 brings in the subs you deserve. 👍
This is so kind of you, thank you!! It's thanks to you and all the wonderful people we got this far, and we're so excited to see what the new year brings!
Random observation: when John says he's been, "smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo" it's a quote from a song by The Statler Brothers: "Counting Flowers on the Wall". "Counting flowers on the wall doesn't bother me at all. Playing Solitaire til dawn with a deck of 51. Smoking cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo, now don't tell meeee - I've nothin' to doooo" Love that song!
