    Our HE washer doesn't seem to work well. It looks like there's never enough water in the load. In fact, sometimes garments that were on top of the load come out partially dry, and never seem to get wet. The cleaning/beating action on the bottom only appears to hit a few garments on the bottom of the load.Are we doing something wrong? Our old washer with an agitator seems to have worked much better. Your comments are appreciated.

      Do you have the front load or the one that is the top load tub style with the really small agitator... My sister has the latter.... We find that we sometimes either select bedding to get more water in the load, or pre wet the clothes so the washer detects more weight and hopefully uses more water.

    I recently switched from tide to a lesser value detergent from costco which suds less so I'm guilty for using extra soap. Which I had to do an extra rinse cycle. I will now try to use less soap.
    Since I watched ur vid on using rosemary & lemon w/ vinegar my laundry comes out so fresh & I notice that the color stays in. My coworkers thought that a bought new scrubs but it's actually my rinse technique.
    Thank you for sharing!

    Hi Melissa, I have a question for you. So a couple weeks ago we had to buy a new washer and of course we went with a HE. The sales lady, at a well-known furniture store, told us that you should actually only use 1 tablespoon of HE detergent for a normal size load, and 2 tablespoons for large loads. Her explanation was that the less soap you use, the less buildup you get in your machine. IS THIS TRUE? I tried it for a few loads and my clothes did not smell clean! Listening to you explain how the HE detergent works, her reasoning didn't make sense. What do you think? Also, I've heard that vinegar can kill your machine over time. What's up with that? Thanks for doing this series!

      She’s an idiot. Also, HE machines are absolute garbage. Buy a well taken care of used mechanical controlled agitator washer it’ll last you the rest of your life 100% guaranteed.

    Since switching to an HE washer, I have been plagued with soap scum and lint left behind on my blacks. I've tried smaller loads, new detergent, extra rinse, everything! My black pants need to be washed three times to get rid of it.

      Try adding more water. I always add gallons more water from a hose connected to our laundry sink. I don't stop until the clothes are floating. HE washers are absolutely terrible. Thank liberals for forcing nonsensical environmental regulations on industries they know nothing about.

    My septic system's sewage ejector pump float was clogged with a residue; I believe it was from an HE soap that I was using. Hence the float not being free to move, my pump did not turn on and we suffered a system failure that resulted in sewage flooding into my lower bathroom shower, big YUCK. I had to remove the pump (dig it up out of the ground, clean it, and return it). This is the second time this has happened in 5 years. I was using a HE brand of soap in liquid and then tried the powder, both caused this problem. It was very expensive to have these dig outs and cleaning/returning events. I am going to try the Tide HE low sudsing liquid hoping for better results.
    If you have had any other commentators mention this problem of what I think is soap build up, please let me know. Also, if you check back with me in 3 years, I am in hopes that I can tell you a much happier story.
    Thanks for your efforts,
    John

      ***** For this particular video, I can't name the brand - as you know I was working with Tide and part of the etiquette involves no naming and shaming competitors. What I can tell you is this: when I did the test on this other detergent (which is a VERY popular HE brand), I was quite surprised at how poorly it performed compared to this one. A lot of people buy it because it's cheaper, but look at the added costs (time, water, less clean clothing). Sponsored or not sponsored, it's clear that not all detergent brands are created equal. If I didn't find this impressive, I wouldn't have agreed to work with Tide on the project. I'm super careful about which brands and products and projects I choose to take on and share with you guys. Hope that clarifies and helps out a little more! xo

      Don't buy Tide as they are owned by P&G, a misandrous company. They own Gillette as well. There are far too many other brands out there that aren't trying to influence a political culture war on men and boys.

    I love the clean my space videos, however I would be weary of any video that specifically endorses a particular product or brand. Also, in regards to the "suds produced" experiment, different laundry detergents also have different cap markings that give you a guideline of how much laundry detergent to add. So it could also be possible that instead of using equal amounts of both detergents (which I'm assuming you've done in the video) you could potentially have to use less of one depending on the recommended cap marking. Overall good video and great explanation of how HE washers work though!

    1.Our Top Loading HG machine does not get all the clothes wet, especially using Normal or Active wear cycles. The cottons (like a teeshirt) have large dry areas when the cycle is done. I do not overfill the machine with clothes. I have to "pause", hand push around dry clothes, and restart. Often I resort to Bulky cycle or Heavy Duty cycle which are not meant for everyday cotton wear. Plus the sheet cycle tangles the sheets or twists them with the little towels I may toss in. Which cycle for towels? It is not delineated on the machine so I try bulk. Do you have a HG machine recommendation? I am on my 2nd machine as the first failed after 2-3 years. This one already has been serviced after 2 years. My old machine from 1970s lasted 30 years with few problems.
    2. To the laundry detergent companies: please make the liquid detergent caps have clearer measuring markings which match the directions on the bottle. I have called two companies to voice my puzzlement on how to measure when the directions do not match the cap's design.
    3. Thank you to you at Clean My Space for your help. You are very helpful.

    What a fabulous video! And the demo was such an eye opener, now I know how to explain to my elderly mother why her 'stupid fancy' washer isn't so stupid after all and how she can set it up for success too! My question has to do with adding things to the rinse cycle in a front loading HE washer. I would like to add a vinegar rinse to my towels to help deodorize and make them fluffier (see, I know my CMS videos!) ;) , but how to do that and when with this type of machine? Thanks Melissa!

    • @cleanmyspace
      @cleanmyspace  9 років тому

      Shari Puddicombe YEAH exactly - that's how I felt when I was playing around with it! So many people get mad at their machines, but it really has to do with knowing how to make your machine purrrrr! You can add softener to the detergent drawer and it will be added in during the rinse cycle :)

    My next question would be can u just go a little more in detail about the buttons on the washer. There are only 6 buttons on mine: whites, colors, brights, delecates, woolens and another i cant remember. But its hard translating that to the normal whites colors and darks. ESPECIALLY the darks, i usually pick colors bc idk what other one to pick and i dont want to test it and potentially ruin my clothes.

    My brand new Maytag top load HE washer is a complete lemon. when i wash bedding it makes these horrible banging noises, requires me to babysit the machine while it refills the basket TEN TIMES or more trying to "rebalance." using way more water than an old school washer. when i wash clothes they leave soil residue in the creases of the clothes. I have used this washer for over a year and every single time i try to wash a cotton blanket or cotton comforter it makes these horrible banging noises and even after repositioning the items multiples times it still fails to balance EVERY TIME. and when the machine tells me it's done the blankets are still soaking wet and smell like sweaty soiled clothes because it never gets properly agitated or spun/drained. The machine tells me it's done but the clothes smell like sweat and dead skin and are dripping wet, obvious signs of a deficient washer. can't clean and can't spin dry. so now i'm drying a soaking wet blanket for over THREE HOURS in the dryer that smells like dirty clothes because the washer told me it is "done" because it simply stops attempting to spin after multiple attempts. I cannot wait for a class action lawsuit against Maytag top loader HE washers, they are the worst in the world. I will never buy anything Maytag as long as I live and will tell everyone I talk to about how bad Maytag is. NEVER MAYTAG, THE WORST BRAND OF WASHING MACHINE EVER MADE. I cannot wait until the class action lawsuit arrives. Maytag you deserve what happens to you for selling a lemon, you complete and utter scumbags. AVOID MAYTAG AT ALL COSTS. Also their dryer is way too hot at the "low" setting, burns my clothes. worst company ever. and they don't even honor their heavily advertised warranties because MAYTAG is complete scum.

    Do you prefer the HE pods or the liquid? I have pods. How many clothes should I wash with just one pod? I sometimes fill my washer with clothes and use two pods, but I'm not sure if that's the right amount of detergent. Thanks!

    What is the best temperature for washing clothing items. I usually run cold, so i don't have to worry about using more resources. But is that the best temperature, like lights vs darks, is it better to wash dark with cold water or not? Also do the front loader type washers wash better than the ones with agitators, we are getting a house and we have a washer with an agitator, but the house comes with one that is like a front loader but set up like one with an agitator, if that makes sense. just curious what one would be better. I LOVED this video! very helpful in so many ways, we use tide, but now i know there are differences, oh how the times have changed since i was a young one lol

    May I ask a question that I want to ask who designed HE washer? I understand the washing water level is low for HE washer,
    and the rinse water level is even lower. The question is, if the rinse water level is lower than the washing water level, how can the surface of the drum that was soaked by the washing water but not soaked by the rinse water be clean? I mean, if the top area of the drum was wet by the dirty water while washing and later it is higher than the rinse water level, the area remains dirty? I’m sure there must be a mechanism to avoid that. Do you know how it is designed?

    Melissa, what are your thoughts on detergent that can be used in both HE and non HE washers? I just bought some Gain and it says it's safe for both.

    • @cleanmyspace
      @cleanmyspace  9 років тому

      Andrea Magallon It's totally fine for both, just make sure you use the right amount so that you don't get too many suds in the machine. Non-HE can't sense suds, so if you have too many you'll get one rinse cycle and a lot of suds left behind.

    I just bought a Maytag HE top loader and the instructions are confusing to me. I am planning on using pods (Tide is what I am planning on using), but where do I put them in the washer? I have watched commercials for pods and they show the person just tossing them into the washer basket instead of using the drawer at the top. The instructions just says, "Add detergent" and shows people pouring liquid into the little drawer. Should toss in the basket with pods or put the pods in the detergent drawer? Thanks.

    Just received a new Samsung washer and dryer. I used HE detergent to wash a large load of laundry which included 3 heavy martial arts gi's. Everything came out fine except the arm pits still smelled on 2 of the martial arts gi's. I re-washed the 2 gi's with non-HE powder detergent, and everything came out fine. Will non HE detergent cause any problems to my machine?

    Fabric Softener?! Every time I use fabric softener my he washer is left smelling funky, almost moldy. I always leave my washer door open after I'm done doing laundry whether I use Fabric Softener or not but it only smell funky when I use it. I've tried diluting the amount of Fabric Softener I use with water and make sure I don't go pass the max fill line that's on the washer but no luck. So I've stop using Fabric Softener and rely on my dryer sheets to add that lovely scent to my clothes though it's not the same. OH HOW I MISS MY FABRIC SOFTENER!

  • @mikebennett703

    Besides drinking, water is also equally important for personal bathing and cleaning. Washing clothes is part of our personal hygiene. So it goes without saying that every single drop of water a washing machine uses is NEVER WASTED no matter how much it uses. The water that gets pumped out of a washing machine contains dirt and contaminants picked up from our surroundings. They are returned to the environment. This waste water is easily purified naturally. The detergents and various laundry aids are all biodegradeable and break down naturally once diluted. They are easily treated. If you feel like you need to take a shower or bath, then so does the clothes your wearing. Limiting and restricting water in washing machines is the same as being allowed to use only a couple gallons of water to bathe in..it's rediculous! Why not go after the tens of thousands of above and below ground swimming pools all of which contain thousands of gallons of water that can't be drunk or used for anything else but swimming? That is MUCH more wasteful than any washer could ever be.

    • @TheDenisedrake
      @TheDenisedrake 9 років тому +3

      Chrystal M I just did the "shake test". I used 1 tsp of my homemade detergent with 2cups water in a quart jar. When I shook it, it filled the upper half with suds (oh no!), but most of it dissipated quickly. When I dumped out the water, there were a few suds left in the jar. Next I put 2 cups cool water and shook the jar. There were no more suds... so I would say it's a winner!
