What strikes me the most about Iron Lung is that in most horror games, there's at least the hope that'll make it out alive and return to normalcy, but in Iron Lung there is no normalcy to return to.
Yeah, in a way the ending is a good alternative than to go back to the stagnant and decaying universe that is the setting
Cosmic Horror it is.
It’s just so scary to think about what it must be like to live in that universe. No sign of life anywhere. Slowly running out of resources floating through space until everyone on the ship inevitably dies.
good thing iron lung is a fictional world
@@uwnbaw the setting and lore yes
I also think that the name "Iron Lung" also says a lot, because have you ever seen an actual iron lung? It's a huge machine with the same type of windows as the one that the ship has. I think the ship "Iron Lung" refers to humanity breathing on it's last resort. With an Iron Lung. And it failed.

it makes it even better that pyro used a pic of the exact sub that just went missing
never
I think the most interesting thing about this game is how many levels of doomed the protagonist is. He is trapped in a submarine, which is itself trapped in an ocean of blood on an alien moon, which is inside of a universe where every planet and star that contained life dissappeared.
I mean, I feel sort of bummed at the end when the convict is killed moments before completing his mission, but its not like him or anyone else is surviving for much longer anyway
eh I think it kills a lot of the tension since everything about the opening text crawl is a giant blaring klaxon that says "YOU'RE GONNA GET JUMPSCARED BY SOME BIG MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS"
they make it clear you're not gonna survive, so naturally you wonder what's gonna kill you and since it's a horror game it's probably some big jumpscare monster. behold a giant fish jpg
I personally find the concept of the quiet rapture infinitely more terrifying than any big fish in a blood ocean
The idea of a silent mass extinction across the universe that nobody even witnessed is incredibly terrifying.
Exactly. I would even understand people becoming suicidal left and right, it would be hard to even have a motivation to live a life that is so uncertain to have anything in store for you. And you don't even know why it's like that.
i've also heard the theory that the blood ocean/s might have been formed from the blood of those who disappeared due to the quiet rapture
Would make a sick Movie or video game franchise.
@@rudorot65 That's exactly what I was thinking about the blood ocean.
The part that was partially said here, about the "Frog" not being hostile might as well be true. It is curious of you, it follows you and doesn't attack you untill you do a picture of its eye. And since the pressure is to high for you to have a open sight window, it means that it is a deep water being, not used to light and by taking the picture, you effectively flash bang it right in the face. That's when it becomes hostile and attacks you.
I don't think the "frog" is the same creature
like Pyro said, the eye looks too big for it to be the case
@@rokkraljkolesa9317 it's definitely an alligator or crocodile eye
I never took a picture of it.
I wish he tried frog in the data console, unless he did and it didn't have anything
I played through it after watching like 5 mins of the video, and when I got the notification something was close, I didn't think to photograph it. I thought my radar was just busted as the whole sub was falling apart, so I just let it keep beeping. Froggy boy still murdered me :(
I think another terrifying thing about this game is that the “quiet rapture” isn’t necessarily sending those raptured to a better place. Its named that by people who are left, who have no idea whats happened. Also, the blood moons are full of human blood. Like, blood presumably from the vanished humans. I dont know what that means but its terrible
There was a comment I read one time that said that perhaps it was the opposite that happened, people in spaceships and moons disappeared
Something about the stars slowly vanishing in the background as the ship slowly floats forward, probably dead and without engine power is so immensely depressing. It's a small detail, but one that really ups the immersion and really makes you feel the desperation and despair that the last humans would've felt, even though you, as an observer, know they're most likely hopeless.
Iron Lung is a perfect example of being scared of what you DON'T see.
The game constantly reminds you that there is something lurking outside of your submarine, but it never let's you know what it's intentions are, where it is and almost never let's you see it.
You are forced to let your imagination fill out the blanks of what could be out there, where it is and what it's intentions are.
Whatever your imagination conjours is far more terrifying than anything the game could ever throw at you
But that just leaves me wanting more, and I need more lore, it’s how I get off.
@@theblackswordsman5039 i do understand that, but i personally don't want more context behind this game and it's lore.
The fact that you know so little about anything in this game, is what makes it so scary.
The more you understand, the less you're scared and i would rather be scared

25:00 was a level of foreshadowing to recent events that I did not expect to see in this video
😭
With what’s going on with the Ocean Gate submersible, it must be just as terrifying as the the story in this game
i think so too
not even close, nah
This'll sound weird but personally the big fish being called "Frog" in the game files just makes the blood moon more terrifying. When we think of a frog we think of something small, cute, something that only really feeds on small insects and poses next to no danger to any even remotely bigger life forms on Earth. So if this colossal fish that tore a hole in your submarine to eat you is what's considered a frog down here so just think of what kind of monsters would prey on it.
It's even more horrifying when you see that one of skeletons is named "whale" in game files and you realize that there are even bigger and worse creatures that lurk in this blood ocean, since it takes a lot to take down such huge being like a whale. For all we know, that whale was eaten whole, and creature was so huge that the devoured whale basically swam in its guts and the skeleton was shat out.
There's always a bigger fish - Qui-Gon Jinn
@@RebelWvlf is it worse to consider that nothing has eaten the bones? Usually in the deep sea there are creatures that consume bones too.
I think that the name frog actually isnt calling it a frog, but rather the nickname given to a certain species of anglerfish called frogfish. Which mind you, are smaller than the average frog.

24:04 canon event
I feel like one of the most important reasons why this game is so terrifying is because all the odds are stacked up against you from the beginning and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.
it plays up that lingering bit of hope which humans innately have and retain even in the worst situations. You know you're gonna die, but that sense of hope hardwired into your brain prevents you from accepting it and finding peace.
some days ago there was an holocaust survivor talking at our uni, he said something that went like "the worst part wasn't the hunger, the beatings or the summary executions. It was the torture of being only able to think about the life all of this, knowing that there was a near 100% chance you weren't going to live it"
That’s true for alot of horror games. Dead space, Resident Evil and such are all huge odds pitted against you

The idea that suddenly, everyone and everything on a celestial body just disappeared and there wasn't even a scream is terrifying.
It would be interesting if the planets, stars etc. got transported to a sort of hell of other realm where blood moons are a thing.
could also be a situation where everyone was destroyed and all the human remains appeared on these moons.
creepy AF anyways
My personal thoughts is not that the planets disappeared, but that the starships and spacestations were instead transported to some hellish dimension
@@japyap6129 oh, didn't think of that, even creepyier then, I wonder what will be shown in the next update or game
I was imagining the worlds suddenly without moons, all spaceships (and therefore majority of communications between planets) gone, tidal disaster across the board of any planet with water--they'll survive, but at what cost?
I always thought it seemed like they didn't get raptured but everyone in the game got taken to hell complete with blood oceans
@@japyap6129 That's kinda what i think. Imagine suddenly all the spaceships and the people on them just disappear. No warning for it. by the sound of it, the humans that were on the spaceships don't sound the best so maybe they were sent to some hell dimension. That's just has terrifying because the people of the ships think all the plants and stars disappeared, when only they did.

@@goese868 I have to agree. Maybe if he had paid a couple voice actors and maybe a writer to handle it, it would have fit the tone better and not sounded like slightly improved Hunt Down the Freeman dialogue
I feel the opposite, but I see your point. Until the last part, I thought and didn’t like Pyro’s “creative skits” around the game, but it was still entertaining.
@@goese868 The voice acting could obviously be better since getting UA-camrs to voice act isn’t really a fantastic idea ever, but I did think schlatt actually had the best line reading out of everyone despite him just talking, it just felt the most natural
Fun fact: The “Whale” as it’s called or the more scaly creature is actually presumably herbivore and just kinda bumps into your way damaging the iron lung, which is how the more predatory “frog” or “angler fish” bursts through to kill you, at least according to the Iron Lung fandom wiki.

Iron Lung is one scare stretched out exactly as long as a single scare can be stretched. It doesn't overstay its welcome. It builds and builds and builds, it gives you the scare, and then it bows out because it knows that trying to carry on would take far more work and undermine everything that just came before.
It is expertly crafted horror.
horror games are one genre where "it's too short" doesn't work as a criticism
its interesting because theres a similar thing in dusk when the enemy "horror" is first shown where the first 2-3 minutes of the level is just key hunting until you open a door to a spiral staircased where you get attacked by a disgusting creature with an elongated face and wild sparatic limbs that seem only barely attached to its body. its interesting that even when he isnt making a horror game david szymanski still understands build up and pay off
@@orbrat212 don’t think it was criticism, more so a strength
@@pasta1549 I think they were just expounding the point
Storytelling (or experiences, in games like this where there really is no story) is a question of buildup and payoff. The length of the game doesn't actually matter, all that matters is the payoff is worth the buildup. In this case, there were very few elements to work with, as an intrinsic part of the game. You're 100% right that the game was the perfect length, because it was just long enough to make the maximum possible buildup for the payoff it gave.

I really hope that the fish we got attacked by is just a small, puny, low-tier creature trying to survive and there is indeed something A LOT bigger and A LOT more dangerous
And that’s exactly the case. You can tell that the eye that you take a picture of is a lot bigger than that fish. Its whole eye takes up the camera, and it’s reptilian most likely. That is the predator of the blood ocean, at least that’s what my theory is.
Me too
the eye seems to be on the side which is common in most prey in the wild so something much more bigger swimming in the sea is very possible
@@beansinspace1243 i dont think that counts for fish, barely any fish have front facing eyes.
The fish from the fotography seems to have its big eyes on the side and scaly skin, but the fish that attacked us (wich can be seen in the map) seems to have smaller front facing eyes and a different type of skin. Wich makes me believe that there is not one but TWO monsters there, and the smallest one was the one that attacked us.

if you go take a picture of the humming monolith, the sub will be destroyed "strangely" - no fishy, but like you crashed, but there will be strange static before you're sent to the menu

DAWG WHAT 24:04
Actually, what they probably mean by "how it can maintain its liquid form" is the fact that blood is mostly just water, which would normally just freeze in space, on moons, as it's really cold out there, especially with all of the stars gone, incuding the system's main star(s), considering it even had any. Coagulation only begins when a certain protein in blood comes in contact with oxygen, which in space, is not a problem, since there just ain't any.
Good video though, I just felt the need to point out.
More creepy is the fact that from what I heard, it's made of HUMAN blood.
Perhaps it's just very salty water, in Antartica there is a waterfall of red water that is so salty it just won't freeze
Its a multi-fold issue.
It has to be warm enough to not freeze
Yet it also needs sufficient atmospheric density to not sublimate (phase change into vapor/gas).
And of course, coagulation.
@@heinzguderian628 I don't think that's the case. It is stated to be made of human blood, which in my oppinion means that it's composition is the same as human blood, which is not all that salty. Also, temperatures in space are very low, especially since stars aren't around anymore. Like, 0 Kelvin cold, which is way colder than Antarctica.
Plus imagine how grungy and disgusting the spaceships must be. Like these things are made out of iron. All the oxygen and moisture from the people living on them means oxidisation would set in quickly and turn it all to rust, making it look like the iron lung itself. Imagine living on there, starving with no hope whatsoever, some freedom huh?

I literally broke down in tears when the character says “it’s iron lunging time” right before stepping into the iron lung. Never have such words spoke to me in such a passionate yet depressing way. 1000/10

This whole game, the lore, the actual gameplay, and everything is such a great combination of creative horror elements. My favorite part has to be when you find the letter and you get near the end, you know it’s probably going to end badly for you but you still have to actively move your ship toward the last marker. You know it’s out there. You know it’s coming. You can’t just step away from the terminal and wait for it to get to you, you have to keep going closer…
It’s much more effective in building tension to the final jumpscare than a typical monster chase sequence.
It also kind of reminds me of the sequence in FMA:B where Ed and Ling get stuck in a void dimension with an endless sea of blood, especially with the ruins of buildings and the confirmation from the lore that the blood is definitely human. 10/10 nightmare fuel, the idea that something like this is humanity’s last hope for survival in a post-rapture universe is just fantastic.
Nice comment! I love FMA (both 03 and Brotherhood), and I like your thoughts on all of this. Take care :)

One of the best ways to tell horror: "LESS IS MORE!". Let the viewers imagination scare them!

I can't let you stop the Orcas from killing the Billionaires, Miles... It's a canon event.
Iron Lung really made me remember how similar space and the deep sea really are and combined both of it so fittingly. Every crevice of this game utilizes this fear of the unknown and the vast emptiness that may or may not be completely empty.
Really makes me want to see more deep sea horror or games with expedition-style exploration.
Cause deep sea and space already capture those core elements: vast loneliness, inherently hostile environment where sheer exposure will violently kill you and of course, the unknown. It's just a really hopeless place to be, yet still has that enthralling quality to it that makes you want to explore and understand.
I got that dread in Subnautica when diving deep down just questioning what the hell might live there and I'd love to see it used more.
This. You're stuck in an ungodly blood ocean with denizens that'd be way different from water, not knowing what this environnement could have bred.
And even if you somehow could get out? You're practially alone in a cold, strange moon.
Do you know about barotrauma?
It's a submarine game with sorta similar vibes to iron lung.
Yeah SOMA is fucking great. It's not really the same feel I think as this, but similar setting.
Duuude I know right this type of shit is what keeps me up at night lol great comment 👍
I definitely need to check Barotrauma out!
The fact that Iron Lung takes place in a cave as well is just added weight. If it's one thing that scares me like the deep sea does, it's being lost in a cave, underwater caves are the worst.
And yeah, SOMA is awesome, the whole underwater aesthetic really added to the deafening existential dread of this game.
When I envision a deep sea horror game I always come back to that one famous image of a Magnapinna that just screams lovecraftian.
I hope that the lore of Iron Lung is expanded upon in the future, but I hope that the quiet rapture is never explained at all. Having it be completely unknown as to why everything just disappeared is way more terrifying in my opinion, and having people speculate as to why is way more interesting than having just one answer.
If the lore is expanded eventually someone will create a popular theory for the quiet rapture, it’s a shame that mystery gets ruined by its communities
@@IsmashedtoRedbone wat? That don't make sense my guy, even if it's popular it's just a theory.
@@sornyeilevente973 A GAME THEORY. THANKS FOR WATCHING
This is kind of a hard lore to expand, it must be done with a lot of sensitivity and care in order to not spoil all these feelings of mistery and curiosity and dread.
True, but I'd like to see just a few more bits and pieces as to how it could have happened. Enough details to inspire a wide range of plausible theories, but never enough to show you the whole big picture. If what happened and how it happened is shown clear as day, there goes the mystery. Then again, if there are so few details that anything could have happened for any reason, it's no fun. Game's holding a good balance so far, in any case.
Aged very well very well

You know, for a substance as thick and nontransparent as blood, the camera does a pretty good job of seeing what's in it
Probably uses sonar or some other low resolution but high intensity scanning. Showing things closer as brighter and further away as darker to create a seeable image. Light and visible radiation certainly isn't a factor.
Blood is not that thick, it's thicker than water but that's not saying much.

I remember pyro saying in a stream he was worried about the reaction to him doing animations and skits in his videos would have but this honestly made for the best pyro video yet, adding so much more to the video when theres only so much to talk about with a game like iron lung. Very nice.
It's not for me, but I respect the time, effort, and talent put into those sections.
