I'll be honest, I'm impressed with both of you for even trying to fix it on the spot....and you even thought to look in the operator manual!
2:48 Buys his wife a gift, he is so excited about playing with it he cant sleep. Its like when Homer bought Marge a bowling ball as a gift, he even had "Homer" engraved on it.
😂
Thank you all SO much for supporting the channel. We can't believe just 6 months later and we are about to hit 50k subscribers!! We can't wait to keep taking you on adventures, hopefully with functional brakes... 😉

ЭТО КАКОЙ МАРКИ АВТОМОБИЛЬ????
I dropped a link for the ™ for the lmtv. Technical manual, very useful when out on your own. Preventative maintenance is everything with Army vehicles.
Just found your videos on youtube,i hardly subscribe to anything on youtube but your videos are interesting and fun to watch so i subscribed.
Know this was ancient history. Durin' 67 to' 70 in the wonderful U.S>Army with the old fashion deuce + half with the tandem rear tires (8 altogether) being a grease monkey decided to check the rear differential. Carefully unscrewed the top differential plug. MMMM, nothing comes out ! This was expected so I tried the drain plug, same thing happened. Stuck my finger inside, something was moving inside ! So surprised (yea right). I dug out about 2 handfulls of bearings from inside !!!!!! This differential was ruined completely. The differential had never been checked probably since the day it was made !!!!!!! My warrant officer was shocked + went to 3rd echelon mechanics to be repaired. We always had plenty of work with these trucks !!!!
Such a cool truck! I'm sure you guys will come up with some super clever ideas of what to do with it. You have such a good attitude about things. So many people would have been so negative about the problems but you guys keep it positive.
It can be easy to fall into a negative mindset when things aren't going your way. But that just ends up in disappointment, instead of joy when you finally figure out the problem!
Watching Courteney helping on every day projects, i said myself, what a Lucky dude to have someoane like her, now i find out she wants an army truck for her birthday..... Seriously, i hope riley realizes how blessed he is....
I would say I am equally as blessed! -Courtney
@@AmbitionStrikes im glad u say that, i subscribed instantly!
Wants something and makes the man do all the work..... typical woman.
I used to drive these trucks at Eglin AFB. I had a great time. You guys will love it.
Don’t forget these trucks are Army Proof!
We used to bleed the air from the tanks before storage to prevent tank corrosion. Don’t stand in front of the air tank valves when they’re open so you don’t get injected with water.
Thanks for the reminder on draining the tanks! We've heard its especially important in below freezing conditions.
I am very impressed with smart people, who just read the manual book and can immediately understand how it works..
Salute for you guys.
The air tanks need to be purged. There are usually places to do this where the air tank "spits." This is the sound it makes once the tanks fill to 120psi. There should be a wire lanyard or chain that allows you to pull a pressure release valve and water should spray out of the tanks. Once the tanks stop spraying water. Your lines should be clear from moisture that can lay in the air lines. @7:00 It's pretty obvious that this maintenance was not performed when the vehicle was parked. This was what cause the erosion in your check valve. There is also water separator on the engine that should be purged before you crank the engine over, the longer the vehicle sits, the more water build up in the tanks from condensation.
Every day after the truck is parked and the engine shut off - purge the air tanks.
great one i said the same thing...
@@coyotePAC3 If its equipped with an air dryer it makes no sense to purge the tanks that often.... :-D
@@johnnyrockford5641 Most military trucks don't have that, lowest bidder and all. Even if they did, leadership would insist that the air tanks be drained because "we've always done it that way'.
Also you cut down on maintenance on your air dryer. Every drop taken out is one the desiccant doesn’t have to do.
Little pro tip if you haven’t already sorted it, if you just put your hand over the alarm while the air pressure builds it makes it a lot more tolerable. Also, with the truck in park you can press the accelerator to increase the output of the compressor to build the pressure faster.
I’m curious, were the brakes actually locked prior to having the pressure to release them? I would assume they were and when they disengaged they didn’t want to reengage? 🤔 and if all 4 are doing it then I’d think it would be a mix or cross over valve that effected the operation of both sides and the front and back as well. I find it a bit unlikely that all brake chambers should’ve failed at once. Let us know what you find out. Thanks!
Riley eventually figured out both of your tips, which saved our ears and patience! 😂
Once we got it home we tested the psi at each wheel and every wheel was receiving 110 psi. They system gets to pressure quickly and holds pressure over night. The parking brake could lock the vehicle up and keep it from moving forward but it would drive right through the service brakes. After driving it a bit they seem to be getting better so we are wondering if things were just rusty from sitting by the cost for 4 years and needed working loose?
That’s kind of what I was leaning toward as well. I would be interested to see inside one of those drums to see how the shoes look. Watch your backs, because the tires are not light if you go to pull one off to check! Also there is typically a troop ladder shoved up under the bed somewhere to get in and out of the back. However, it may have been borrowed long term from your new rig 😂🤷🏽♂️
@@TimTaigaTradesman The troop ladder is missing and the previous owner said he never had it. Kind of a bummer!
Dang, no bueno! That’s alright easy to fab one up, but I’m sure the back will be transformed to something new sooner rather than later. Excited to see what you guys come up with. Also, a bit jealous of Riley’s 3D Cad design work and that plasma CNC you guys have. I’m still using the old napkin drawings and by hand method. Would like to get a better grasp on the metal brake as well. Anyways, I’m just rambling at this point.
@@theadventuresofarenaissancman there's one. I remembered using them.
Seeing this truck triggers my PTSD. That center seat matches the round hatch in the roof. Some of our trucks had a ring mount for a machine gun above that hatch.
Thank you for your service! We have talked about mounting a water cannon in the roof opening...
I was given for free this same truck because the brakes were broken. I then also got ride of it for the same reason.
Rockwell parts needed to be upgraded to After Market Monster Truck parts. it was out of my project range at the time.
I've had many trucks with problems but nothing that big. You guys seem to have a lot of tenacity and smiles so I am sure it will work out. Great video. AAAAA+++++
🤣🤣🤣 this was too entertaining to watch. LMTV’s are super fun to drive just be careful on uneven roads (rollovers are never fun) & making sure you have visibility of the passenger side as the driver. Always easier to drive with two people in the cab but totally doable solo if you practice. I have a lot of resources on these if you need it. Excited to see what you guys do with it! 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you so much for the tips!! I don't plan on letting Riley have too much fun without me so there should be two people in cab usually! 😂
They're far more stable than most trucks made......you'd have to be turning extremely sharp or way over loaded to roll it.
Super fun to drive? What planet are you from?
You guys are cool , just saw your first video on your Polebarn build and jumped to the truck video . I have a lot of footage to check out . I hope the old boys lip healed ok .
Happy birthday Courtney again!! Your birthday present will come in handy for the near further of the channel!! Lol
I would first get it mechanically sound, then eventually turn it into a new adventure vehicle. But what ever you guys decide to do, I’ll be following a long on the channel!! Congrats, on what the future has to come!!!
Thank you, it was a great birthday! I won't be letting us take it anywhere until I'm confident it will get use there safely! 😉
Happy Birthday Courtney!! Love your videos even though things aren't going so well in India, you guys have been an escape from reality! thank you so much, can't wait for what you guys are gonna do with an army truck! Endless possibilities..
Thank you so much for watching and supporting our channel! We can't wait share the next adventure with you.
I was on a battalion fielding team in Texas in late 90s when we had them issued. They were great. even a decade later when i retired the LMTVs in surrounding units had relatively few problems. It was a vast improvement over the 2.5 and 5 ton trucks they replaced.
You definitely don’t wanna get in one of the new trucks. The only good thing about the new trucks is that they have AC
Oh and the seats are better
Happy Birthday! I hope you had a great day. Love the truck. I’ve always wanted an army truck. Can’t wait to see more of it.
Thanks Andrew! We didn't know we "needed" an army truck until we got one and now we are hooked!
What a Awesome military truck! Has lots of potential for many things. Can't wait tonsee what yall do with it! Happy Birthday!
So much potential!! Can't wait to get the truck up to Idaho!
I suggest keeping the truck and making the necessary repairs. That’s a vehicle that can take just just about anywhere.
Heck, if I had a place to store and work on a LMTV, I would buy one. They are awesome,
Accept that any military vehicle seems to literally break down when its parked LOL
So awesome!!! Congrats on the truck. I wish I was near to give you a hand, I’ve been a truck driver for 20+ years. I sometimes wish I built one of those instead of my skoolie. Maybe some day I will! I can’t wait to see what you do with it!
A skoolie seems more practical than one of these for a full time RV, but these would certainly make for a fun adventure! 😂

Crazy purchase. Living the dream! Thanks for sharing
You might want to check at the Warbirds Museum to see if there are any volunteers who know something about the truck. There are folks who work on Army vehicles in the museum. Congratulations on your new big adventure. You’ve chosen a beautiful part of the country for your new home.
Oh that is an excellent idea. Thanks Suzanne!

Looks like a awesome expedition truck if I have ever seen one! Maybe a fire truck for your new property... maybe both, if anyone can do it y’all are the ones!!!
Fire truck, plow truck, dump truck, oh my! 😆
Awesome video, thank you ! Oh to meet a great woman as this beautiful, sincere person 💝
First off.. HAPP BIRTHDAY!! You are one lucky person to get a birthday gift like that!!!. Second.. WOW!! what a cool truck and what looks like your next fun project. You guys are too cool!! Have fun and can't wait for the next video
Thank you! It was a great birthday, aside from Riley smashing his face... 😬
My compliments to you on stating you have a challenge. I do not accept the term problems, only challenges. A challenge always has a solution, although sometimes it is a bit harder harder to resolve. Keep up the good work.
We love challenges! They keep us on our toes, always learning and having fun!
Awesome, another build by you guys!
We can’t wait to get started! We have some unconventional plans for this thing!
I thought maybe you guys left the trailer brakes open but it looks like you know where the air brakes for the truck and the trailer are... Maybe listen to the truck and do a walk around, apply all the breaks, see if its the air tanks or dryer, there maybe an open valve somewhere. I'd say you guys are luck because the air system is an easy problem to have compared to the other kinds of complications you could have.
Happy birthday Courtney, and well as for the truck let's go with a off road camper. So much room for activities.
Thank you, it was a great birthday!
really looking forward to see what you do with the platform.
It has so much potential
Us too!
Welcome to the LMTV family! Stoked you have one now - Watch Sean (Fastidious Restomods) and Chad's (BrokeOverland) video series. Seriously, a wealth of info. I bought my M1078 A1 in February. I'll be working on the enclosure soon.
Ooh thanks for the tips, adding their channels to our watchlist now!
That was my vehicle of choice in the Army. Great truck. Was hoping to buy one through surplus one day but ... it is what it is. Congrats and have fun.
What an amazing piece of kit. Have fun you guys!
We can't wait to get started on it!!
Wow, I remember driving LMTV in 1998 when my unit first them brand spanking new. It was trip first seeing buttons for gear shifts. Brings back memories!
Were the seats just as uncomfortable when when new? 😂

Going to interesting. I know you all will do a great job. Cant wait to watch !
We’ve got a lot to learn! 😂
You guys are amazing. OMG Happy Birthday! Hahahahaha Can’t wait to see what you have for us in the future. ❤️🇨🇦❤️ Cheers!!!
Thank you! It was an amazing birthday! ☺️
Super cool truck, reminds me a lot of a Samil 20 which is fun to drive. build a super cool camper from it. Aluminum fold down railings on the roof so the roof can be an elevated BBQ area, just to watch the sun go down.
I just thought about it. It was your cage bolts on your air cylinder 😅 the tow guy probably knew that because thats how u make the truck roll without hooking up the air lines in the front of your lmtv. Probably had unnecessary work done on your brakes. I love your content and cant wait to see more of this truck
A women of my dreams, happy with a big 4x4 Army truck for her birthday!
It was a great birthday!
A real keep-her!😏
Does she have a sister just like her 🤪
Impressive taste for a lady
Where can I find a women like your wife? She's a gem !
I can't wait to see what you guys will end up doing to this truck!!
Us too! 😂
Bought our m1078 in Massachusetts. Drove it home to Kentucky (1200 miles). Hitting 2 lanes and single lane gravel roads. Only had one tire blow out due to a ctis valve sticking. So far I bought a ambulance box to build a removable camper box (pod). Have fun with it.
I’m glad to hear you made it home safely! That sounds like it is going to be a fun build! 👊🏻
That truck is way cool (Happy Birthday!) and will be useful on the new Idaho property. I ETS's from the Army in '79 so that truck is a bit newer than what I used to drive (MOS: 64C). I'd love to have one although not sure what I'd do with it. :)
I think you might need a class B license with an air brake endorsement to drive it.
Yes it is going to be incredibly useful! The GVWR is under 26k so it does not require a CDL.
Your projects and editing are top notch. I always look forward to your latest video’s. Riley and your relationship seems fantastic. Cheers from Cali! I will also say I feel like a lazy idiot, it’s a love hate relationship with you guys. Lol
Thank you so much! It's not always easy but we feel so fortunate to be able to go on adventures like this together. 😊

I really hope you two are building an even bigger expedition vehicle. Lots more room for activities.
Again a very happy birthday to you Cortney.
We would love to build one as an expedition vehicle someday, but for now we are going to build it into the perfect dump truck/snow plow for our Idaho property!
Happy Birthday, your so lucky to have an army truck as a present that's the best!

LETS GOOOOOO. This is going to be insane. Congrats 🤙
🤘🏻
this is the most hilarious video I've seen from you guys. I spend 9 years in the army and never realized how people that don't about them can have totally different idea about how things work vs. how they actually work.
We came in real confident and quickly realized this wasn't going to be like our normal Craigslist purchase... 😂
Remember, the lowest bidder*/best politically connected company won the contract to build those trucks.
(* not necessarily lowest bidder, but cheapest to build for sure )
As to the manuals, I worked for a company that wrote such manuals AFTER, in my case, the helicopter was built, flying and sold to the Army. We had to figure out how things worked and write the manuals to describe them, and maintenance and repair of same. VERY frustrating. Hopefully, we got it all right, but no way to check.
@@KutWrite I spend 9 years in the Army and actually loved the manuals!!! very useful
@@mjl9702 Nice to hear from a fan!
@@KutWrite The FMTV trucks were initially built by Stewart & Stevenson in Sealy, Texas. The first couple of thousand production units were shipped in place while S&S and the US Army finalized the Steyr based design. Production was then halted as the huge inventory was run through a retrofit line. I visited the plant several times back in the 1990s to assess progress on the program. S&S had e-coat tanks at their assembly plant where they dipped frame components to meet USA corrosion requirements. The Cat engines, axles, etc were high quality commercial components. Good to see an FMTV truck still motoring.
Happy belated birthday from New Zealand Courtney the buzzer making the noise will proably be a low air buzzer should go off when the air pressure comes up to operating pressure but you probably know that by now I have just found this episode love your videos you are an amazing very capable couple

One piece of advise when lifting the cab always lift it all the way forward !!!! Or it can slowly start coming down and if you don’t realize it ,it will crush you ! Almost learned that the hard way. Good luck
That is excellent advice, thank you!!
Can't wait to see what becomes of this beast. Hoping it becomes an overland rig. Can't wait to see you take some real off-road adventures.
That would be epic!
While it is a true 'Ford vs Chevy' argument, by far, the S&S FMTV1078 was one of THE BEST trucks ever built! Well thought-out, Cat engine, very robust with relatively few 'surprise failures'...it far-outperformed the M35/M800/M900 trucks that were its predecessors. Personally, I always wanted to purchase one privately, modify a 20-ft shipping container into an RV-camper body, and make it one of those 'owned-for-life' all-purpose RV/Camper/Hunting rig trucks!...old age an declining health now makes that just a pipe-dream, though...
The M939 series is a far better vehicle. They put just about the worst engine Cat made in the LMTV, and they tend to have electrical issues. A 923 may be more clunky and less driver friendly but it beats the S&S unit for reliability.
Aw, don't hate on the old M809's. They at least had excellent power steering over the M35's.
@@ianberry5879 I'll second that.... I did ALOT of research 4 years ago when I decided to buy my 931A2 dump and everything I throw at this truck in my environment it's chews up and doesn't let me down....I use it for all kinds of off road site work and the truck is amazing !
I bought it refurbished from Memphis equipment,TN because I needed a truck that would pass a federal DOT inspection and smoke test. These guys down there are a pleasure to work with and have been nothing but supportive if I ever need parts or advice.

As a veteran I would suggest purging the air tanks as they can build up waater from condensation.Just a bit of advise from an old warhorsee.
Thank you so much for the tip! And thank you for your service. ☺️
I'd call or stop by your nearest army reserve or national guard site. These trucks are still in service and there with undoubtedly be soldiers there that work on these all the time. You may walk away with a full set of TMs (technical manuals) and extra stuff from the parts bin.
We have had several mechanics reach out to us with incredibly useful information. Such a great community of like minded people!
Love those trucks I've driven 6x6 s

That sounds awesome!!
That truck is a beast. You could probably put the whole camper truck on the back and still have GVW to spare.
Also, poor Riley. He is getting beat up by these projects almost as much as John McClane gets beat up in a Die Hard movie.
Riley vs. Old Iron... who will win next time? 😉
Happy birthday - this is going to be a huge asset for your Idaho property.
Thank you! It is so much truck for the money and is going to be a great tool!
Hoping that thing going to be an expedition truck, big one than your other one. Gonna be interesting to be build with lots more storage and bigger. 🤩
Maybe someday, l but we have other plans for it at the moment!
If upon starting, the system is holding air , and the tanks are not empty or below minimum I would say your air compressor is working. Have you tried applying the parking brake, for the cab only, and do a leak down test . You should slowly lose air pressure till the warning sound starts again. Start it up, Tanks should refill pretty quickly and not lose any air just sitting for a short period of time. All air systems have a minimum pressure to keep the brakes unlocked. My 2002 Pete with a Cat 3406 was about 70 psi. good luck.
I can't add anything on the engineering/mechanics - other than saying that you're lucky to get a vehicle that can still be wrenched on - but it's an awesome addition. Utility-wise, I'd use it however you see fit, but it's your birthday and the rig seems like a gift for him. Even so, it seems like a great project vehicle with a solid legacy so I can't wait to see what you do with it. HBD! And good luck with the M1078,
Riley actually wasn't going to buy the truck until I decided I really wanted it... so I guess it's really a gift for both of us! It is going to make an excellent vehicle for our Idaho property.
The alarm is just the air pressure, it turns off when the air builds up in the tank, a small trick we do is just get a piece of duct tape and put it on the buzzer it muffles the alarm by a lot. Look up the Technical Manual (TM) and it’ll show you how conduct PMCS for the LMTV and it’ll tell you step by step on how perform operator level maintenance, and show you the parts needed and all that good stuff! If anything stop by your local Reserve or National Guard Center and I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to show you and give you some tips, these vehicles are fully amazing and are extremely versatile. It’s nice for Fording high water.
Oh thanks for the tip, we are definitely going to have to quiet that buzzer down a bit! Sounds like we need to get it up to Idaho and find some water crossings! 😂
I'm sure it's been figured out, but that chime when you first started it was the low air alarm.
Happy Birthday Courtney. I love your new truck.
Thanks Mike! It's pretty darn awesome!
