You should do a “tree/shrub” in a pot video submission for your series on our gardens. Also a Japanese Maple collection one. Someone here said they have over 200! I’d looove to see that!

Hi! I’m a fan of Japanese maples and I have a collection which can be like 45 maples, less or more depending how much I want to add and change in my limited space. I know here in UA-cam someone called “Maple Nutz” who have more than 400 cultivars and he posted here each variety. Take a look over him.

I have a Christmas tree in a pot. I bought it three years ago from my supermarket. It was two feet then and just over four now. It has just pushed out small purple cones. It’s gorgeous. It comes onto the patio for winter for me to decorate.

I love this idea! If we ever screen in our porch I might be taking your wonderful idea (its far too windy to decorate something unprotected here). I always cringe when we cut down our tree, I'd much rather have a live tree that will keep on growing! 💚

One of the best aspects about this channel is its honesty. It may seem strange, but I really enjoy it when Laura shows an overgrown shrub that hasn't been pruned in forever because at first I'm inclined to think, "How could they let it get like that?" Then I have to step back and say, "That's life. Not everything can be done even if your job is gardening for UA-cam." Thank you Laura and Aaron for keeping it real. I'm certain it's the main reason why I keep coming back to this channel.

I have a Japanese Maple in a container on my deck for about 10 years and it keeps doing well. It's tipped over from wind a few times so now I have it tied to the deck railing. I'm a zone 6b so we do get snow and cold. I'm thinking I might start looking this year to take it out of the container and put it in the ground. But it has added such great interest and color on our deck!

Just planted a Bloodgood into a container and it’s always so nice that I can find this info years later. What a library you’ve created. To keep these doing well beyond a few years, it seems we have to “root prune” them which one can find info on from other creators who specialize in maples. For instance s visual learners, UA-cam and its creators are awesome.

I got an Angel Wings last fall. It’s rated zone 8, and since I’m in pnw zone 8, I’d planned on putting it in a larger pot and keeping it protected from excess cold and moisture. I forgot about it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Luckily it was against the house on the south side so the snow and rain only killed off the top. Was I glad to see new growth coming up in April!

That's a beautiful tree! I have a few red Japanese maples in the ground, and I love them. There is a particular kind of Japanese maple that has green leaves, but in the winter, it's branches turn red. It's so unique to see the red branches in the dreary winter. We have two off those. They are bullet proof! No pests and handle heat, cold, drought, and wet. Our weather has been wild the last 5ish years. It handles it all.

You are so full of useful tips…like planting a plant in its pot so it doesn’t receive as much water as others members of the pot may need! This year I’ve planted calabrachoa in the container along with a sweet potato vine and lantana, and wondered about that calabrachoa with its need to dry out between waterings…what a GREAT idea! I have three japanese maples in pots on the north side of our patio and they seam to have done great this winter (Sweden, zon 4). We are planning for a pond area where they will go eventually, but we do enjoy them so much in the meantime. It’s a great way to get double use out of them. And a way to handle ones inabillity to wait for the pond to actually be finished, before one runs out to shop for plants…😅😁

I love watching your “ plant recipes”
I think mixed container are so much more interesting than just one thing.
I had a lovely Japanese lace leaf maple tree that I bought from biltmore gardens in NC. It stayed in a thin plastic pot in my front yard for years as I couldn’t decide where to plant it. It’s now in the ground for a second year right about where the pit lived! lol
It’s almost doubled in size which is pretty amazing as it’s the type that turns red in Fall & then sheds all its leaves. It’s always my first one to bloom out.
They are just the best tree. (Maybe I should pot up another!)
Funnily enough I just planted heucherellas around it this year. I can’t remember the name but they bud out a bright green and turn a deep purple.
I also used some large leaf ferns. These are all under a larger tree canopy so only gets a few hours of morning sun & only this time of year. I can’t wait to see how full they get by end of summer.
I may look for some of the other things you planted - but I definitely need things that will thrive in shade.
    Love your channel!

I love this idea; I planted a Japanese Maple in the ground 10 years ago and I love it. Now I want to plant another one. This idea gives me more options. I bought one Angel Wings Senecio and was wondering what to combine it with. Cant wait to see how you used yours.

This video was so perfectly timed! I just planted a blood good maple in a pot earlier this week and was wondering what to look for. The previous maple you had on your pot inspired me and now I’m so glad to see a round two for you! Just a beautiful planting! Also so fun to see what you chose for the underplanting! I used cream and blue blooming plants so seeing a different setting is just wonderful!

I have learned so much from you about the color and texture contrasts in plant combinations. Now I have added hostas that I had never considered. I just used to pick anything that I liked and didn't venture out further. Thanks for the detail and attention you give to planning these combinations. I love that Benjamin is so helpful.

I planted euphorbia and begonia in a pot last season and it was gorgeous! The wispy flowers against the beefy begonia was a beautiful juxtaposition! I love this pot!!

Lol Laura, my oldest daughter still has her Christmas 🎄 tree in her living room up!!
I told that it's not just a Christmas tree. But a valentine's, St Patrick's day, Easter, and soon 4th of July tree! Lol.
Hahaha, her response is "don't be judgey" lol.

Laura you are not the only one. We still have a cut tree in a pot which we sprayed with wilt stop on our front porch and a bird has made a nest in it. Amazing stuff wilt stop.

I love Angel Wing Senicio! I picked up two the other day at Lowes of all places. Gorgeous! Beautiful pot and the color combo is so striking. Thank you for all the tips on growing trees in pots. I have 4 different Japanese Maples in my yard and get lots of volunteers each year my husbands digs up and pots up in nursery cans. I have a few that are about 4 feet tall now and was not sure what to do with them. Now I know! Love you videos and garden. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you Laura! I've been wanting to plant a Japanese maple in a pot. Here in the city, the front yard is tiny and has municipal pipes running underground. A small tree in a pot is the only option. Thank you so much!
