Nothing more beautiful than a group of maples together with varied textures, shapes, heights, and colors. Can't forget how some conifers can really set them off too. Gets me every time! Great discussion guys, I dig MR. MAPLE!
Don’t forget to consider the power lines when you plant the larger upright trees if you don’t want the power company ruining the shape of your maple. Your one gallon tree will eventually get there. I learned that one the hard way 😢
Oh my goodness, YES PLEASE talk about your interview in Japan and your experience with how to they are grown in Japan. I dig Japanese maples.
I have an Osakazuki growing behind a Timor Black Bamboo. The contrast in form and colour is sensational!
Like the concept of using Japanese maples to mimic sunrise and sunset. Although I've reached the point where a new tree has to go where I have room - also, I DIG MRMAPLE!
I'm 100% in the same place as you. I DID MRMAPLE
Top Advice ! All of my Japanese Acers are in pots, some of those pots hold up to 300 to 600ltrs of suitable compost with good drainage! Some of the varieties I have such as Emperor One, Sango Kaku, Osakazuki and Kogane Nishiki to name but a few. My recent additions are two small Ki Hachijo of which I hope will grow well over the years to come! Without doubt, the Mr Maple UA-cam platform is my “go to” source for advice and inspiration!
Thanks guys 4 " another" FANTASTIC video 🎉❤
Thank you!
I'm turning the north side of my corner lot into a Japanese maple garden.
Good bye moss! 😊
Sounds great!
I dig mr maple! I only wish I had more space for Japanese maples!
After seeing this video I became more attentive to picking where to plant my trees. Mr. Maple podcast

I dig Mr. Maple! great info about the various locations and varieties looking forward to seeing your trip to Japan and some of the more mature Japanese maples! hate my plans to go were delayed by the virus, but hopefully next fall will be able to make it!
I DIG MRMAPLE ....greetings from Belgium.
Excellent! I dig Mr. Maple 🍁
@Mrmaple I feel like the best plant to pair with a Japanese Maple is.... another Japanese Maple, they are just the best. Lots of cool conifers and flowers you can plant to contrast with texture and color, but the more Japanese Maples look best, is next to another Japanese Maple! I try to contrast the summer colors, but sometimes I contrast with spring colors.. personally I could care less about fall colors, typically, I only get about 2 weeks of fall color, max! Usually by the time they start to turn to their fall colors, a frost is just right around the corner and the frost causes the leaves to drop.
I love Japanese maples, but I live in Zone 3. I plan on potting some.
I DIG MRMAPLE!!!

As an attempt to copy some Asian style, I planted an Emperor I near my stream. It stayed too damp in that location when the stream overflowed its banks and it succumbed to root rot within 2 yrs. River birches now grace that area instead. Further down the stream, the bank is much higher from the water and will look nice planted with my species northern white cedar trees, Red Flash and Viridis maples.
I dig Mr Maple!!!
I DIG MRMAPLE.
Hey guys! Thanks for the video. Am siting 6 maples this week and looking forward to spring color. Virginia 7B. Ps…two I got from you guys!
I have four and they all are doing perfect and they all have different lighting from bright to dapple too low
I DIG MRMAPLE
Great and very useful info. Keep up the great work. #japanesemaples

For me in Canberra Australia which is the coldest capital city in Australia and most of the winter is below freezing. Main issue is the usual dry summers that can reach 100 degrees over long periods so protection from sun is needed. Containers work for me as I need to move them around the garden throughout the year.
Same here in Melbourne Victoria. The summers like this year can be brutal on them. Pots have been a god send. For the one side of our house which receives the afternoon sun.

Guys can you clarify something. Lots a differing opinions out there. How close to a house foundation can i plant a Japanese Maple. Goal is to keep it small. Less than 7 feet tall.
Japanese maples have a very non invasive root system. They will not grow into a foundation. Being to close to a house can effect the shape longterm but the maples won’t harm the home
Someone gave me a crimson red maple in a large pot (50 gal). She was moving out of state and could not take it. I’m in zone 8 central Texas. I cant find out home big this will be, it takes on an unbelievable shape. I plan on putting in the ground.
We do a cultivar called ‘Crimson Queen’ that is a small laceleaf. Red maple or Acer rubrum get very large. My guess is you have a laceleaf Crimson queen. Check out pics on MrMaple.com to compare
@@MrMapleShow This was donated to Children's Advocacy Center, it was already in a big pot, she could only tell Crimson Red and purchased at a big box store, it has no leaves on it, they have all dropped off. I have learned a lot watching your video's. I am waiting till spring to deliver to the center and I think just leave it undisturbed in the pot for now. Thank you.

I just planted my Germaine’s Gyration pretty close to my front walkway, ~1.5 feet from it. Is that too close/will the branches block the walkway in a few years?
It’s typically 10x10 in 10 years
I think there may be a pipe under the hole I've dug to plant my bloodgood. Do you think it will harm the pipes? May sole is very rocky here in WV so I'm sure it will have good drainage. Just worried if there is a pipe below, I've came across some grey gravel.
Thanks!
They have very noninvasive roots but that said I wouldn’t plant anything directly over a pipe
Mr. Maple gift card!!!!!! God bless!!(!!!
Are the roots to invasive to plant near a septic field? I know other maples (acer rubrum) are.
They are not invasive but cannot handle any wet areas
Question, I want to try a maple and I was thinking of putting it into a pot to start with so I can make sure I put it where it likes. So what type of pot is best for a maple? Terracotta, plastic, ceramic or does it matter? Also how much bigger do I need to go than the pot you send it in? Just trying to learn before I purchase. Thank you!
We check out our video on pot sizes. Typically they grow faster when moved up in incremental sizes. Pot material matters less than just making sure whatever type has good drainage

Are there any Japanese maples that will work in nearly full sun in zone 8A Southeastern NC?
I have an island with an oak tree. Could I plant a ozuku (sp) in the island with it or will it get to big
Greatly depends on the space. Typically an oak is a great spot
#JAPANESEMAPLE
Hello I have a question I have a coral bark Japanese maple I live in el paso tx where is the best place to plant my tree also I have a clay soil.
You can amend with aged pine bark. The key is good drainage
Are yall open to visit yet? 🥺
We will be this spring. We are doing open house Memorial Day but haven’t sent other dates yet. Likely April
Hello guys, I am from Colombia, with a tropical weather and temperatures range between 18°C to 30°C, what type of maple would you recommend to plant in my front garden (?)
Dormancy period is must for Japanese maples so it maybe to warm. They have to shut down for at least 1-2 months in winter to retain healthy growth cycle
Can Japanese maples be planted inside the drip line of native tall pines here in Va 7A? Should I amend the soil to build it up a bit or should I use a container for the Japanese maple?
Just depends greatly appreciate on how dry or wet the drip line is. They should do fine but check the water amount. Typically pines don’t like it wet either so it should be fine
@@MrMapleShow thanks for the info!

MRMAPLE GIFTCARD 🍁
Can you plant a maple in the ground during leaf out or should i wait?
I actually typically try to do right before we or right after ideally. It certainly can be done but you just have to pay closer attention to water
>!>! #JAPANESE MAPLES #japanesemaples ##!
How far away from your house should you plant a Japanese maple? Such as a red bark.
I would recommend at least 3 ft but they do have a very non invasive root system. Be continue that too close can change the long term shape some also but they are not plants that do damages
@@MrMapleShow wonderful! Thank you 😊

I would not plant Maples near a Koi pond where shedding leaves can fall into it. Even blown by the wind. Keep your pond clean and the pump filter clear from debris.
I disagree. I’ve have several near koi ponds. They provide grad shade for the koi. Maples do drop leave but they do not creat a huge amount of leaves. Ponds will need to be cleaned anyway but a koi pond without trees is boring
@@MrMapleShow I couldn't agree with you more. A Koi pond would be boring without Maples. Like you I planted Maples to provide shade in the after noon for various reasons. It just happened to be also the prevailing winds blowing in the pond. So if we are in agreement, I guess I'm saying.... strategically place your Maples. Take into consideration of having to clean your pond every. I had 4 mature Maples 10 feet tall, 2 feet away from the pond. This pond measures 7 feet by 19 feet 3 feet deep. It was work getting leaves out. As it is right now I am buying nice Maples from Mr. Maple for another lap around the block. This time I will strategically place my Maples. Perhaps you guys could do a video on such issues, such as size, kinds of Maples , pump intake and cage to keep leaves out. Most importantly, shade. On a side note. Four years ago, I acquired some bulbs from an expert in Elephant Ears. I was talking to her about shade for Koi ponds. So she sent me a couple of bulbs and said "Try these and see what you can do with them" Now on its 4th year the Giant Elephant Ear is over 6 feet tall, the frons measure 2.5 feet x 3.5 feet and 6feet tall. From what I can tell these will keep growing and growing. They can take full sun once established. I was also thinking of using these as an umbrella for younger smaller Maples until the Maple is established. The Elephant Ear can be easily moved and survive a transplant. I have a dozen in the ground and a dozen of these in pots. Thanks for responding, I really did think you'd read it to be honest. But in the video you ask for others to reply with their own ideas, so I thought I'd share. Btw I am new to Mr. Maples but have bought about a dozen Maples already.
