I did work on this film in Berlin many years ago as a junior assistant for the assistant. If people can not work out why there is so little action , murder, and mayhem. This is only to make you feel and understand the REAL Spy business. As it happens in those days in Berlin. James Bond has no place in this at all. Shool teachers are involved in this mess for Gods sake.! Spies without guns are more REAL then not.

+Karl-Heinz Barr They are it's true. So was Inga in bed with someone when Quiller called, or not, as Segal depicted in his interview ....? Palmer and Quiller are more the real deal.......

+Karl-Heinz Barr Indeed, my F-I-L was a Polish Farm Slave in Bavaria during WW II and had his face slapped by an SS Officer once for running away. He was lucky! Then Communists overran Poland and he came to UK. Commies, Nazi's, they're all the same re their ethos of utter dominance over mankind.........

+Karl-Heinz Barr I guess a film like tinker tailor soldier spy would be the modern day equivelent of this. I remember being dissapointed with it, upon first viewing in the cinema many years ago. I was used to the James Bond thrillers. Since then I have rewatched it 3 or 4 times, and have come to appreciate it more. Excellent performances by Segal, and Von Sydow, but then again, when was he ever bad. I do remember being puzzled by Senta Berger's character though.

made when directors treated their audience with intelligence and weren't afraid to take their time to set up characters and situations to tell a good story instead of punctuating every five minutes with mindless shoot em ups. this film rewards patience with great acting talent at the top of their game.

No fast paced b.s editing. Yes, a breath of fresh air. Old skool style bond but as sexy as any of them. Double thumbs up!

The Quiller Memorandum is my favorite spy movie, for many reasons. Ironically it is also Quentin Tarantino's favorite spy movie. I worked as a Teacher in a German International School and it brings back fond memories of being a teacher. Getting the children to form lines after break is just so classic.
For me the messgae in the film holds true today. The scene at the beginning where Pol tells Quiller that Nazis don't wear brown shirts anymore is pure gold. And at the end of the film Quiller and Inge are discussing the capture of all the Nazi cell, and most importantly both of them are wearing brown. That visual lesson is combined with Quiller letting Inge off the hook. Their personal relationship trumps their duty on being on opposite sides. This is shades of "The spy who came in from the cold" and makes this movie true to life. Like the "Three Days of the Condor", "The Whistleblower" and to some extent the Harry Palmer films this is how espionage works in real life. Spy movies in a completely different class to gun toting, babe chasing, car chasing gamblers.

Well, I’ve always held that people who watch Bond movies for the spycraft and not just the action, the stunts, the set pieces, the quips, the glamour and the fun villains, just aren’t getting it. They’re excellent at what they do, but we’re not meant to take them seriously.
Stories like The Spy Who Came In From The Cold are loosely based on Le Carrie’s experiences and the experiences of his colleagues and contacts. They’re gritty, seedy, philosophical, eye opening and always rather tragic. They tell the tale of people who make huge sacrifices (sometimes the ultimate sacrifice) for their country and way of life, and who do so for very little by way of reward. That is the morality lesson at the heart of all of John Le Carrie’s stories, told in varying ways, mixing just enough fiction with the facts to get by the sensors of MI’s 5 and 6. It is their plausibility and frankness that captures their audiences, as well as their beautifully crafted characters. Talk about, “show, don’t tell.” Le Carrie gives us stories in which the characters have made never telling anyone anything a way of life! So the story and plot is all revealed in the mood, the atmosphere and the spaces between the sentences. That’s genius.
Quiller falls somewhere between the high concept of Harry Palmer stories and the gritty down-to-Earth-ism of Le Carrie.
I’m indebted to you for mentioning Tarantino. I was trying to think, who does George Segal remind me of? It’s Bruce Willis. There are times, when he’s chatting up the German teacher in her flat, when he even sounded like him. Something about the eyes and the shape of his features, combined with his mannerisms.

Great performances by Guinness and von Sydow too, although no surprise there. The film reminds me of the Harry Palmer films a little and with a classic John Barry score to boot. @Margaret Gust Read the book Overthrow. It's full of facts about how the US has invaded 150 countries so far. Plus, the the whole point of the US was to dominate the natives and form a nation after they are subdued. The US did dominate the Indians (eradicated them actually) for that purpose. But I suppose it's easier for you to think your government is like a toothfairy, wishing nobody any harm, just trying to help everyone selflessly. Don't forget either, the US lost 500,000 lives in wwii, the USSR lost 29,000,000, so if you understand math you know who did more to stop hitler.

The presence of Alec Guinness - no matter how fleeting - in a movie always lifts it out of the commonplace. George Segal was a popular actor in the sixties most at home in romantic comedies. He was a good King Rat.
Max Von Sydow plays a convincing baddie and strangely admits to finding Segal sexy...? Segal was undoubtedly a charismatic thespian though with a somewhat limited range. He had three basic expressions which magically served him well: one of greater or lesser anxiety; the second of confused disbelief; and the third a mixture of the two.
Senta Berger was a brilliant actress and arguably the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Moreover - unlike so many other actresses, e.g. Goldie Hawn - Miss Berger has retained her good looks into old age.

I saw this in theater in my youth. I've forgotten 1000's of movies. It has stayed w me since. It's my favorite movie. I'm w S Taylor below, my other is Michael Cains "Ipcress File". Never understood why Segal didn't continue on w the character like Cain did w Harry Palmer
George Segal was perfect in every way. Max Von Sydow was the perfect antagonist, didn't under or over play the part. Like all the guys my age I fell in love w Senta Berger. Alec Guiness was a little too over the top for me, but OK. Even George Saunders bit was spot on.
Those who never got it, I think you had to live thru the Cold War to really appreciate all the subtle nuances to the film. The characters, the scenes, the music, atmospheres flowed into one to make it one of the best. The final departing scene w Senta Berger at the school is at least as stunning and descriptive as the final Casablanca scene
    Thank you, Anthony Prime

I first saw it in a cinema in Singapore in 66 and it made a big impression on me. I agree with your comment except I liked Alex Guiness' character. Eight years ago I was a school teacher in a German school and did the double clap in the playground to get the children to form two lines and so this brings back fond memories for me. The ending of this film is very powerful on many levels.

That look of deep sadness by Quiller when he is finishing up talking with Inga is quite moving. He fell in love with her, knew he had been betrayed, and that he could never trust her again.

Addendum: If this had been an early James Bond film: At the end, Bond would have assasinated both the headmistress and Inge, but the latter only after bedding her again and finding something of Jones’ in her apartment.

This is a great spy movie and for me it brings back memories of being a school teacher in Germany which I really enjoyed. I remember getting the kids to form two lines in the playground before marching off to the classroom. The film shows how real spies behave. It also shows how agents on different sides can be loyal to the deep friendship that sometimes develops. For me one of the key points of the film is that both Quiller and Inge are wearing brown in the last scene. There are no coincidences in the spy game and things are seldom what they seem.

Later in young adulthood I had several German friends, the similarities between the two cultures were fascinating.

Do read the Quiller series by Adam Hall (pseudonym of Elleston Trevor, who also wrote The Flight of the Phoenix; yes, he was very, very good). The books are much better than the movie, which was fine. Might be difficult to find the books, these days. It's a great pity that excellent books from a half century ago are now so difficult to find. I was just in the bookstore looking to reread an Alistair Maclean novel, The Guns of Navarone. Maclean was a prolific writer with many books made into movies, e.g., The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra, When Eight Bells Toll, The Satan Bug - just to name a few, and I know I'm missing at least one of the big movie names. Bookstores used to be full of his works, and deservedly so. Not now, not any more. They have even disappeared from most libraries. A great cultural loss. You would think these might be digitized before being tossed out. I'm a former data entry operator. I offer my services to save these literary whales before they become extinct. For a reasonable price, of course. There's a lot of such work that could keep people beneficially employed. But no, instead I sit here jobless. Somebody should be held responsible.
