To coat acrylic you can try black latex paint. It paints on streak free. It's water based and after engraving if comes off with soap and water. Works good on glass also.
Great video! So many tips here, I’ve watched several times and have a list of things you shared to test and try out. Thank you for putting this together in one video!
Hey there! 👋 I'm a newbie in the world of entrepreneurship and UA-cam, and I just wanted to drop by and say hello. Your work and videos have been truly inspiring, and I'm excited to learn and grow on this platform. Keep up the fantastic work, and thank you for being a source of motivation for newcomers like me. Looking forward to exploring more of your content!
You can also use a painted metal sheet for clear acrylic (do not use galvanized steel for the sheet) I use a metal sheet spray painted flat gray. Once I use up all the area just throw a fresh coat on rinse and repeat. I use the d1 5w pro
can you explain this a little more.. so you paint the metal sheet, then place the clear acrylic piece on top of it.. acrylic has nothing on it.. and then you just engrave? sorry I am very new, and have elegoo phecda 10w version
I use black card stock on my Clear Acrylic. But Put dawn soap on side down between card and Acrylic, water wash. I get good consistency, I sell LED stands with them. 👍🏻 looks great.
Hi Great Videos, On acrylic I have been told on another sight not you ue air and on another to use low air assist what do you recommend as I am struggling to get good results on acrylic and getting poo results mainly been trying far slower speeds and power than you are suggesting and acrylic is getting used up a lot running tests. Many thanks and using 10w diode as a newby
I really enjoy your videos! I would like to engrave some custom name tags that include some graphics. Ideally, I would like to use dual color acrylic or plastic that I could later attach a clip or magnet. I have found blue material that exposes white when engraved. But I am looking for white material the when engraved exposes either black, or preferably blue. Is such a product available? If so, what do you recommend? I am using LightBurn and a diode laser. Any help would be much appreciated. Dave E.
hi my firnd i have a safety question i find a video about diode lasers and they show why orange or red glases are really better that green ones, despite that all diode lasers came whit green glases, there is some reason for that?
The 5W machine is Atomstack X7, 10W is Ortur Laser master 3, and 20W is xTool D1 pro. If cutting and engraving acrylic is your primary requirement, then I would suggest to go for a CO2 laser as it can produce faster results and even engrave clear acrylic without any transfer medium. In case of Diode laser, I would suggest a 20W or higher diode laser (preferably from xTool) for faster results and cleaner cuts in thick acrylic.
I was engraving with the power speed table from your other video to test my acrylic and there is a crack in every box, I'm using a comgrow z1 any idea why? Could it just be the acrylic I'm using?
Xtool D1 pro 20w. Working on cutting out acrylic pieces on various colors. Looking for guidance on power/speed/passes parameters. Also if only food to use a certain thickness of cast acrylic. Thank you.
I recommend that you watch this video on laser cutting acrylic where I discuss the parameters for cutting acrylic sheets of various colors using a 20W laser: ua-cam.com/video/Qa0sVyndWCk/v-deo.html Regarding thickness, I suggest using cast acrylic with thickness up to 3mm.
Hi. What would be the best settings to use to cut clear Acrylic? I would also like to know in Lightburn where did you get the setting to cut the bike keyring out like that. It is really cool. I am new to lasering so are still learning all the different things. Thanks for the 7-day course on lasers I have registered for it and are looking forward to each lesson.
You cannot cut clear acrylic using a diode laser, you'll need a CO2 laser for that. Go to window menu on LightBurn and check if you have Modifiers enabled (if not enable it). Check the toolbar on left side and find Offset shapes, click on it and you'll get the window to make the offset, play around with it and you'll figure out how to do it. PS: It only works with vectors PPS: You can use trace image option to make vector from image PPPS: Ask me if you have more doubts
I haven't got an opportunity to work with that particular material yet, but CO2 laser seems like the ideal choice. However, if you could share what you intends to do with it, I might be able to provide a more targeted advice.
Use a piece of stainless steel under clear acrylic or glass. Focus on the steel, place acrylic on top and burn away. Works every time. Image will be on back of substrate.
I just did a sign where I painted sheet metal gray, focused on it and engraved a 4mm clear acrylic on it with the settings from the video (100% power and 9000mm/min speed). Alot of black marks on the side that engraced and even with alot of cleaning with alcohol it does not go away + bubbles in the engraving as well. Guess i need to do some speed tests to sort this out.
@@lightspeedlaserengraving6048 That sounds good but people are also talking about laser vs metal = laser can bounce up and break the lens, no clue how true that is.
Hello sir.. I'm using sculpfun 9 And want laser engraving on acryclic, stainless steel and leather. Pls advice me on power setting for these things on lightbur n Thank you
Hi, I haven't used the Sculpfun S9, but I believe it has a 5.5W laser output, so you can use the optimal parameters for any 5W laser module as a reference to start your jobs. You can refer to this material settings chart from xTool and use the settings corresponding to their 5W laser module to get started. www.xtool.com/pages/material-settings

I put the paint side up because I managed to get an even coat of paint. If you cannot achieve a uniform coat of paint, then it is better to put the paint side down. But make sure that you set the laser focus at the painted surface and keep the workpiece elevated from the table to allow the smoke to escape easily.
Thanks for your comment! We actually go to our studio to make this stuff. 😀 But seriously, could you elaborate a bit more on what you mean? Just want to make sure we're on the same page!
Hi there, can I please ask if it is possible to engrave and cut mirror acrylic on a M1 Xtool 10W laser? If so, could you please share with me how I could best do that? Thank you so much. Love all your videos!
No, diode lasers cannot cut mirror acrylic because once the reflective coating is removed, only clear acrylic remains, and diode lasers cannot cut clear acrylic. However, you can use your 10W laser to engrave the back of the mirror acrylic.
I personally have never tried that, and since most Erase markers contain polyvinyl butyral (PVB), I would not recommend using them. Processing PVB under a laser produces harmful fumes that can be dangerous if inhaled, and even damage your laser machine.
I have not tried it yet, but you should be able to use the same process that you use for acrylic. Also, I think polycarbonate will give you good white engraving. You can try engraving a small square on the corner of your piece. Please let me know how it turned out.
No. Diode lasers cannot cut clear acrylic as the laser passes straight through clear acrylic. However, you can use a transfer medium, such as paint or cardstock method to engrave on clear acrylic using a diode laser.
On clear acrylic using Tempera paint, do you put the painted side down and focus on the underside, or is the painted side up with focus on the surface_
Fantastic video very informative! I do have a question, i also have a 10w diode laser (creality falcon) and even at 4500 speed and 30% power i get lots of cracks and pops on clear 2mm acrylic :-( i have to dial it right down to 7500 speed and 20% power for no cracks but the marking is very soft... what am i doing wrong? Thank you! namaste
I am sorry but I am new.. this might be a dumb question.. but for clear acrylic, you need to only paint where you are engraving? and once it is done, you clean the paint off? or leave it? do you engrave on the side with the paint, or the other side and have the painted side on the table? thanks
Yes, you only need to paint the surface that you are engraving, and once it is done, you can clean the paint off to get the frosty white engraving look. You can also leave the paint on of you prefer the painted look (depends on what you want your project to look like). You can engrave on either sides. But if you use a brush to apply the paint, I would suggest engraving on the other side and have the painted side on the table. That way, laser engraves on the back of the paint where the paint layer is uniform without any brush strokes. However, you have to set the laser focus on the painted surface as the laser will burn the paint to produce the engraving.
Grazie 😊

First you say 7500mm / min and 75% power on the 20w and in the scene after that you say 9000mm /min and 100% power on the 20w, which one is it? The last one made my acrylic full of pops and bubbles.
The first one is the one I got from the initial test pattern. 9000 mm/min at 100% is the speed I got after further testing to optimize speed. You should run a power test, a lot of factors can affect the speed and power setting you need to use.
