  • Thanks for bearing with me for taking a long break from UA-cam video for a long time! I am happy to say that I am finally back at making video.
Today, I am excited to share with you my one and only one rambling rose in my garden, Dorathy Perkins!
It is an antique rose breed by E. Alvin Miller in 1901. Once upon a time, it was one of the most popular rambler in people's garden. It is famous for blooming profusely in cluster and I can totally see why people are attracted by this very charming rose.
I planted it 3 years ago from 1 gallon. It quickly covered the entire gazebo for me within the 1st year. What you see here is only 1 plant. It gives me some blooms for the past 2 years in spring and it is an once bloomer. I must admit that I was a little disapointed last year. However, when it reach the 3 years mark this spring, it really shower me with all the blooms. Just wow!!
Due to how vigorous this rose is growing, I will not recommend it for beginner rose gardener. But if you have the space, patience and time to tame and grow this rose, I will say definitely go for it. It is indeed a very whimsical rose and just going make you want to hang around it when it blooms. A true dream come true moment.

Stunning, you did such a good job at covering the Gazebo! Funny how the Blue Rose is almost shadowed by all that pink!

It is not an easy job to cover that gazebo because I am so short. Lol!!! When pink rose is blooming, you just can't look away. It is glowing in its own.

It is a beast!! Imagine this is after I cut off 70% of the canes!! It could have been much more spectacular. I love and scare of this beast at the same time. So complicated. 😆

I've never had a rambler before. It's beautiful. I love how the blooms move in the wind. I'd love to see a garden tour sometime.

My Grandfather brought a piece of Dorothy Perkins rose from UK when he came to Canada in 1920 and I have treasured this rose which grew at my family home until it was sold and I was in my 30's. I have since moved it from home to home and this rose is a beast. It cannot die no matter how many times I transplant it. It has been at this home now for 22 years. Last year for the first time ever it was plagued with mildew. I have since cut back and removed a lilac that was hanging over it and shading it. In my childhood there were two large pieces on either side of an arched trellis and it loved it there, I have so many photos standing under the arbour in a party dress with Dorothy Perkins blooming around me. I honour this rose, it hasn't been doing as well last year. I think I will cut it back to the ground and see if that rejuvenates it. Can you tell me what type of fertilizer you use to get it to grow so big and so lovely. Thank you.

The story behind your Dorothy Perkins really touched me. This is why I always have a special feeling about antique rose. It is like growing a piece of live history. I will actually advise against cut it down to the ground. I do not think it need to be prune that severely. Maybe just cut all the side branches with leaves and leave it with main cane only. I feed mine in the early season with Jobes rose stakes. After the roses started to leaf out, I gave Miracle gro Bloom boaster to boast bloom and even more growth. I think you can try it this way. My roses was totally bare with only main cane in March after I pruned and train it again. It grows and bloom like this within 1.5 months. So, you can imagine how vigorous and how fast it can recover from the pruning. Just don't prune the main cane. It will still continue to bloom for you. Good luck and keep me updated.

@@backyardparadise2334 Thank you so much! I would love to keep this rose going and I will get those items to give it a boost. I noticed we had a very wet spring and the ground is very wet so I wonder if amending the soil or digging it up and moving it to a better spot that is dryer and not so wet. I really appreciate your heartfelt comments and will definitely let you know how it goes.
