"A lot of this performance, for me, is a love letter to my kids an- and it's an apology" This is literally Kratos...what a perfect person for the role, someone who relates to such an iconic character and grows on such an incredible experience.
The fact that Kratos is shedding a tear, putting on the blades that caused so much death and damage, to him and everyone around him, is so powerful! Christopher Judge, did an Oscar worthy performance.
Holy shit he really DID cry! I admired him since I was a boy, seeing Stargate and his Teal´c character. But this... this is something else, truly special. You are the best Chris!
The Mo cap actor for Kratos Shad Gaspard just died while saving his son from drowning, he told the lifeguards to prioritize his son’s life. I don’t have enough words to honor this man with
That tear, that lonesome, singular tear, with a muffled, choking "I know" is heartwrenching. Wish they kept this one, way more emotionnal especially considering he's basically re-living his murderous past with these blades.
@@gamernation1400 but it does. He lived hell in his past life. Those blades are what killed his first family. Something that still haunts him to this day. So having a choked-up sentence rather than the stoic "I know" that we still got is really in-character.
@@LET4M4RU Nope, he was raised in an extremely brutal environment where showing no weakness was important to surviving. He’s a machine of war, I’m not saying he’s incapable of feeling sadness, but he will never show it much really. That’s just what he was taught.
@@gamernation1400 Have you even played the game? He shows plenty of emotions during the journey. Moreover, he can overcome his sadness by walking towards Athena nonetheless. However he can show this small moment of regret, doubt and just pure sadness by taking back the weapons that murdered his first family. He is more than just a machine of war. He was, before anything, a human being. And he cannot run away from that. From his emotions.
"I know". That... that right there is an amazing piece of acting. His voice breaking. The long pause, waiting for a response. That is why I love gaming. You can actually feel the emotion and the thoughts going through Kratos head while that is happening. That "I know", said as someone that remembered everything he did. All his mistakes... al the death and suffering caused by those damned blades. Knowing the fact that the only way he can fix this is going back to the darkness... never being able to flee from it.
This actually wasn't acting per say. Judge didn't fully understand Kratos' history at this point of the production. He was actually getting emotional from the words of Athena's voice actor which described faults he made in his own past.
Basically he took on a show as an actor and he missed his kids growing up.. I think it was around 10 years. And his kids resent him for it. He was kinda talking about during the documentary. But yeah he was just reliving him betraying his kids and having them grow up without him.
I know! I wanted to reach through time and the screen to give him a hug and let him know that if he even gives a tenth of whatever he leaves on the stage acting to his children, he'd be just an amazing father.
I love that you can see what he's holding back. There's a lot of trauma and complexity, a lot of love for his kids, a lot of stuff he can probably never express to other people. It's really poignant. I bet he's a phenomenal father because of whatever he's agonizing about.
When you’re this passionate and connected to what you do, you are the best for the job. They really pulled no punches with this game. It was GOTY the moment it was announced at E3 2016.
It is truly admirable how deeply emotionally he delved into this performance. You listen to his voice and then his Kratos voice, and you see how much he has to put on to get there, but then he goes the extra mile, he lets real emotions come through, the full spectrum of sadness, guilt, vulnerability, rage, desperation. It is remarkable what he does with it. He sells the impossible, the toughest, angriest, most badass video game action hero of all time, just frozen and shaking with shame over everything that brought him to this point, everything that made Kratos before, he hates himself for it, he is so ashamed that the thing that terrifies him more than anything in the world, more than any Titan or Dragon or God... Is that his tiny, scrawny, innocent little son will be ashamed of him too. I think perhaps that is what Chris finds so emotional about this, is how he relates to Kratos as a father, this idea, this fear that you aren't who your child thinks you are, that perhaps you're not good enough for them and don't deserve the reverence they have for you that no feeling in the world can compare to, and worse yet the fear that they may never look at you that way again if they got to know you better. Another scene like that is him telling Atreus he's a god, and after just a few seconds of silence, Kratos desperately looks back, asking for some sort of reaction from him because he can't bear the anticipation, only to be relieved when Atreus takes the news seemingly well. Cory absolutely made the right call in choosing to tell this story, and they got the perfect man for the lead part.
One of the best Kratos reactions in that game. His voice is like a weight just lifted from him, when his kid just asks something as innocent as "can I become a animal?"
This makes me think of that meme template of the two astronauts looking at the earth, but the text would say: “Wait kratos is black?” “Always has been”

The "I know" moment, never fails to get me, it's such a pure, honest, genuine moment for not only Kratos but Christopher Judge himself. Absolutely incredible performance.
We don't deserve a man like Christopher Judge. His performance was AMAZING throughout the entire game, but seeing this behind the scenes shows just how much he put into this game. The entire GOW team is amazing and we thank you for the story you have given us. Can't wait for the next game
Even in Production u can feel the Theme of Father hood. Cory Barlog a Father the actor of Kratos is a Father. I like this God Of War more than the other installment

Chris judge is the most perfect man for the role of old and wise kratos. He learn wisely to be a better person and to be a greater father in the game that it highlightened kratos to have genuine emotions throughout the story that it made the game so realistic. I already feel honored just watching the gameplay and i hope this impact the game industry to venture and create new things to bring back the excitement and adventurous feeling when we first played a game.
Every time Christopher cries in this performance I also do. He's such a handsome man and in the documentary he explains this one further. When his children were growing up he was always busy with work. God of War made him realize together with Sunny Suljic, what he had missed. Working all the time instead of being a dad to his children. Myself being a father of a 6 years old girl as well that I can barely see due to different circumstances I can totally relate to him.
Imagine if Rage of Sparta started playing, I won't have a spine left to have shivers on anymore lol, I anticipate that track dropping in Ragnarök as he's about to wreck some God especially Odin. Holy shit, the fandom will explode
I'm not surprised at all this made him cry. "You will always be a monster." "I know. But I am your monster no more." It is such a deep, powerful, emotional, moving moment. The weight of it, the weight that in some way we all feel, we're all monsters in our own way, some more than others. Knowing that no matter what you do, you will always be a monster, you cannot escape it, it will always be a part of you. But in the second game he reconciles this. He knows he is a monster, Heimdall was right, with his final word, "Monster...". He's horrified at what he did but he still did it, no matter what he does, that monster will always live inside of him. But when he talks to Thor, and Thor is experiencing the same pain and shame and regret that he did in that moment with Athena, KNOWING he's a monster, KNOWING he's done so many evil unredeemable things, and in that moment he becomes who he needed when Athena said that to you. "Don't you know...WHAT I'VE DONE?!" "YES! But what will you do now?" That's what HE needed to hear in that moment, that he will always be a monster, that he can't change the past, but he CAN be better moving forward. He can be a monster, but he doesn't have to be evil. And that's the key. Living with the pain, with the regret, and pushing forward through it and trying every day to keep it under control and to be a better person. Yeah, that would make me cry too.
"A lot of this performance, for me, is a love letter to my kids and an apology" I think that is a struggle a lot of parents go through, making choices that could make or break your baby's life every single day of its life and knowing that making a mistake is inevitable. I think what Christopher meant to say with that is that it is an apology for any mistakes he has made, and any of the mistakes that have yet to come. I love this guy, he seems like a great person and a good father.
I remember playing this scene for the first time. I had played every single game of GOW when i was younger so this was just the most epic scene in a video game ever. I still come to rewatch this time to time.
I have a feeling they used a more subtle take for the final product, because it would not really be in Kratos’s character to show his bare emotions in presence of Athena. Or anyone, really. In the final take, you still see all of Christopher Judge’s emotion in Kratos’s eyes.
DraKaleel 18 I never said it was about revenge. But Athena’s presence is a major factor here. Also Kratos was never a person displaying his emotions this heavily.
Years later I still come back to this behind the scenes amazing. I wish I could see Christopher Judge look at Athena’s voice actor when she says father
Damn I know it’s his business but now I wanna know so badly what he was thinking and feeling. I’m sure every parent has the same feeling of wishing they could have been a better father or mother but for Christopher to be so emotional is so moving and touching
This game was more than a game if your a parent nd go through stuff this game hits that hard and shows you no matter what you go through you have to accept it nd move on to be a better you
I keep coming back to this clip. So many years later I still think about it. How it affects me and the times I feel I need to hear him say the words “I Know” really affects me emotionally. Being a fan of God Of War, seeing that tear drop just everything about it. Makes me sad, hurt, angry and regret for the shit mistakes ive done in the past.

Damn I know it’s his business but now I wanna know so badly what he was thinking and feeling. I’m sure every parent has the same feeling of wishing they could have been a better father or mother but for Christopher to be so emotional is so moving and touching
Not many can make people cry without anything sad actually happening. I appreciate all Mr. Judge's hard work and emotional openness.
That " I KNOW " There With Tear Was The Feeling Of Kratos , The Real Kratos , Well Done Mr Judge Well Done 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you so much Santa Monica. Your videogames changed my life and i got Kratos tattooed in my soul
This game was more than a game if your a parent nd go through stuff this game hits that hard and shows you no matter what you go through you have to accept it nd move on to be a better you
he's him, that's that guy pal, trust me, he's that guy
God of war
🛡Kartos vs 🔨Thor
Who's wait for this moment
got a teaser at the very end... it's coming.
Pretty sure he's going to die in the next game
Its me studio remix
Who’s Kartos?
Big Feg 😂😂😂😂😂
As soon as he said ‘I know’ I got immediately choked up. Christopher Judge is amazing. He is Kratos.
This scene was my absolute favorite. "I know, but I am your monster no longer"
This scene was my favorite in the game and my favorite moment in the entire generation.
A dad doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to save his child.
after “But I am your monster no longer” he shed a tear
Seeing this behind the scenes clip was so powerful, the game is a masterpiece and Christopher Judge's acting was top tier. To get into that mindset like that was incredible, he's a massively underrated actor. I really hope we get many more GoW games with him as Kratos.
Christopher Judge did AMAZING in this game. Flawless voice acting an mocap.
He was the perfect choice for Kratos.
Perfect casting. I love how both Chris and Kratos have this reluctance to share their past.
Somebody get this amazing dude a fucking hug already god damn 😥
Christopher Judge is an amazing person and actor. I can't wait to see more of him in future installments and willing a movie
Lengdary actor. I grew up watching him in stargate never thought he would do video games. Just made it even better
I was about to cry then that outro had me dead af lmao
that “i know” is just too good. incredible
That tear drop at 1:38 got me 😢
Amazing actor with an amazing voice
Wow. Christopher poured his heart out. Really amazing scene. I absolutely love this game.
sheesh that jawline and that voice🤯
Think about it. A game that came out in the beginning of 2005 has brought us here. Heck, David Jaffe didn't even plan for a squel.
This scene is great. I think that the acting in the whole game especially this scene is amazing, and after playing Ragnarok I can say that it just gets better.
Voice acting 🎭 deserves more credit then it actually gets because the talent that’s involved in doing such is really good man 🔥.
Well it’s not voice acting. It’s acting. Just digitally. His body movement and facial features are tracked. It’s harder than regular acting id say.

Definitely 🔥
It's the emotion in front of, and behind the camera that won this game all the awards. As it damn well should have. This is why it won over RD2.
RDR2 also had that level of emotion in it. You should see some of the interviews from the actors who played Arthur and Dutch.
They’re both phenomenal games that both equally deserved GOTY IMO. 2018 was such a great year for gaming.
You will always be a monster, it hit home. I feel every one has a darkness in them and you can't deny it!
Just finished Ragnorok. GOTY again! No doubt!
It should've won fr. Elden ring is a better art piece but gow is a better game.
From Stargate's Teal'c, now To God of War's Kratos.
You had me crying man
