Another of my favorites is the one that came from a Spartan Queen in response to someone visiting asking her “Why do the women in Sparta get treated better then all the other women in Greece?” The Queen simply responded “because Spartan women make Spartan men”. She wasn’t wrong. In Spartan culture, the only two kinds of people who got marked graves upon death were those who died in war, or those who died during childbirth. Spartan women also had the equal right to vote in Sparta. So it wasn’t a Queen bragging, but simply explaining the way that Spartans thought. “Women help make more men, more men means more soldiers, therefore women are just as important.” There’s obviously more reasons that women are important, but for a society mainly known for their warfare, it’s really cool to see them take on that form of thinking and it leading to them being more progressive than others in that regard
