      @@thejordyoshi I would do this in a HEARTBEAT here in America!!!! I wonder how long his program is? Can we go there or he come here to train! We grandmothers rock the world & it will return the VALUE that elders have!

    I like this kind of thing. Africa has none of the infrastructure built up in the western world, including mental health infrastructure. So they get creative with the resources they do have, like this.

      Hello Dr Chibanda. Really Brilliant idea. Thanks. I'm not a grandma I'm a grandpa in South Africa. 74 years old. But I have a number of grandma's and a number of depressed people around me. Mostly whites but the need doesn't change. How can we tie in and get people trained. Need to recognize some of us old men in something too but for the moment grandmas. Bless you . Leon Snyman

    Elderly persons are so important in our community. Through history they have had the role of passing down information to their younger generations so that their knowledge, wisdom and legacy can be left behind. Now a days we visit grandma/grandpa during holidays or special occasions because life is too busy. I couldn't imagine how horrible that must make them feel. Especially after their significant other passes away. Lonely, depressed, with no purpose. My heart aches for them. Call your grandparents and tell them you love them today if you are blessed enough to still have them here. I pray everyday to my nanny. And I ask my friends to please watch and support this mission Dixon Chibanda talks about. When elders have a higher purpose in life and can help the community we are creating a symbiotic solution. He is suggesting that we teach grandma on how to help those who are depressed. There is a shortage around the world of trained psychiatrist and an outrageous amount of people who are depressed. I think this a beautiful creation of a plan and should be shared, watched and put to action.

    This is actually a really great idea. Grandmothers have the time and patience (usually) to do these things. Why not grandfathers though? I feel like for men especially, going to another male for help would make it easier for them to open up

    • @ShadaOfAllThings
      @ShadaOfAllThings 6 років тому +26

      In the conditions present I wouldn't be surprised if Grandmothers were the better focus for the test of concept. In a ton of African societies Grandmothers already play a role as a councilor of sorts. While opening it up to grandfathers would also work there was less work to do in order to get it working and the people to train were already lined up to help. Of course I imagine once the program is something constantly happening, constantly looking for new people to help, it'll be opened up to more than just grandparents.

    It is so heart-warming to know that there are people out there who are using their knowledge as a device to teach others and in turn help others. So many are so prideful that they don't want to share the benefits of their education. This kind of selflessness, taking time of your life to teach grandmothers how to save another's life, is heaven-sent.

    Actually, there are many people in the world that wanna be listened , heared and given an advice.
    It's all about our humanities. If happens smth we need to talk with strangers, not our relatives. And noway anything will be hidden behind the conversation. Doing this way we are completely ready to share everything whatever it would be.
    it will solve all our problems.
    thanks for the great perfomance, Dixon!

    Heard about this from two hitchhikers I picked up by the airport in Sweden. It's no wonder that grandmothers would give better results than doctors, because they are persons with a life experience, and to sit *next* to a human being, rather than in front of a desk, invites for so much more warmth, so much more social linking. It recognizes that those two persons on the bench are a group for a moment, a bit of society, valid to each other.
