The Chinese heater is a copy of the Eberspächer Airtronic D4 4 kw, and some parts are interchangeable, it’s a reasonable copy for the money except for the electronics, it’s not weather sealed so can’t be mounted under a vehical and the software does not have the same level of control ie the Eberspächer you just set it to the required temp and it does the rest, the Chinese heater tends to soot up if ran on low heat too long, so be prepared to split the main housing to decoke it from time to time.
There’s some lively FB groups on how to customize the Chinese heaters display/controller to,make it more reliable.
Would I have a Chinese heater? nope, my campers Eberspächer is 21yr old and still works fine, some I fitted 30+ years ago are still working.
As you’r in Canada, if heading off somewhere a bit chilly in winter -30-40c you may want to think about which one would you trust, having said that you could take a whole new Chinese heater for spares, a motor for the Webasto costs more than the compleat Chinese heater kit.

Hi...Just letting you know that I have 2 China heaters with aluminium housings both bought in Canada from BC to Ont., no sales tax for less that $200 each delivered to my front door ,in less than 1 week ,installed into vans by myself.These units have been in operation now for 2 years with no issues. They are awesome for the low price.Just started my third year with them.

Haha no I don’t have one yet but I will be going the Chinese route. TONS of good reviews and long term users that I’ve never heard complain about the noise level.
Although I heard it can get noisy when it’s burning down your van...so idk...trade offs?

You could replace alot of stuff on the china one before you get to 1500 .
I still would purchase the Chinese one because of the LARGE price spread. If the Webasto was 400 to 500 dollars I could see purchasing it but with a 1300 price difference over the Chinese one.. no way. It's not a deal-breaker for me!
Check out the Seven Wanders the World Channel. He had one installed, worked a short time, he pulled it apart and it was gunked up inside...
Webasto or Propex would be my choice.
The concern over having a small diesel tank inside the van is pretty overblown. Unleaded gasoline fumes have a 'flashpoint' of -45F while diesel fumes won't ignite until well over 100F(up to 200F depending on the grade). People have had heating oil tanks in their basements or next to their homes for decades without issue. Diesel also doesn't 'off gas' fumes near as much as gasoline so the odds of there even being fumes inside the van are slim. Leaks and/or spills of diesel in the van will stink, but there is little danger.
Does that mean I would go with the Chinese heater? Not necessarily. I'm a big believer in 'Buy once, cry once' and having had a Webasto in a plow truck I know the reliability of them.
i could get 7 chinese heaters for the price of ONE higher quality one. so i might just stick with the chinese
I have a Webasto. I've had it over 5 years no problem. A friend had one and it stopped burning fuel and just dripped fuel. I've wstchdd some UA-cam videos where some have had good luck with the Chinese knockoffs and others have problems right out of the box. Don't be directly in front of where it blows the air out. It's extremely hot. One UA-camr put a splitter on his so it blew air in different directions. You're going to love it. No more propane bomb!
I had a webasto heater in my big rig. On one trip I had my fuel lines freeze and the truck shut down but the heater kept me warm while I waited for the mechanic to show up. Kept me warm and safe @ - 30c.

I'll be buddy heater heating for awhile mostly because I'd have to also pay an installer for anything else and I can't afford all that. So it's not even just the price of the heater to consider, it's the price of the installer.

I also had a chinese heater. After 2 oilpumps I upgraded to planar 2d. It is cheaper than the webasto and the quality is the same.
Had the Wabasto in my big trucks. Worked day after day with no issues. Pricey but worth it.
He knows his stuff. It’s crazy how much the differences were. Only the best will do.
I worked at Volvo for 30+years and we installed hundreds of webastel heater the to heat the motor & the one to heat the cab

This is SUPER helpful. My (dearly departed) Dad gave me some great advice many, many years ago: buy the best you can afford. I would rather wait, work more, save, and get the better built one, the one that won't keep me awake at night with worry (especially because I'll have a cat and a a dog in my van with me). Yes it's a huge price difference, but clearly, you get what you pay for. P.S. $1500 will buy a lot of gas to drive somewhere warm(er) for the winter :-) Thanks so much for sharing this, Ray is truly great at what he does and I look forward to working with him next year when I get my van.
My neighbor's car caught fire recently. These reviews and those situations paint a great perspective on SAFETY in van life.
I agree with everything but come on a jet taking off? Lol thats a little dramatic I worked on a aircraft carrier if that is close to a jet taking off ur waking up the city ur sleeping in lol
I went with a propex heater. Works great, very reliable and no maintenance.

I went with a Amazon fridge cooler instead of the dometic, reason being is so I could use the savings for a webasto. I rather have a fridge fail on me instead of something that potentially could burn my van down haha

Ray Outfitted said the burning chamber in the Webasto and Espar heaters cost roughly the same as the entire Chinese heater kit. Big difference!
Thanks for this video Chrome, I also noticed the fan on the Webasto heater is bigger and probably moves more air than the knock off one... I've been thinking of a diesel heater for my boat, but on a boat, you got to have water seals on all the connectors... so thanks for this video comparison... in the end, you get what you pay for... you got this Chrome, you and Cruz should be toasty warm this winter... stay weird, I think your a keeper just as you are... lots of luv to you and Cruz, stay safe, stay weird, stay healthy... Well, that pretty much sums it up Chrome. This is the only video like this that I have seen good job. Now that you have cleared the air and I now understand and can now purchase safely. I have been looking for side by side comparisons and only find the cheap Chinese heater "great heater" reviews.

I have a friend that has a Chinese diesel heater, two actually but neither is in a van. One is in his shed/man cave and the other on his ice fishing shack and they are like loud.
Very good video. Have been thinking of this for my van and you made up my mind. I'm going with the Webasto. Thank you for the break down. I was able to see with my own two eyes! Was not aware there was a gas version.
make sure you run them regularly (out of the cold time of the year as well) - min once a month for 30min or so to prevent clogging, i am pleased with my Webasto and also have a coolant heater for cold winter starts.....
I had heard in another van build video that there could be a problem covering damage to your van if a problem (fire, etc.) was caused related to the Chinese heater. Something about the lack of certification....might be something to confirm with your insurance before installing a chinese heater.

Webasto is going on the list! Smaller unit, better made, and it’s made in America! I would paid for the peace of mind. Buy the quality tool over the cheap tool and you’d only have to make one purchase! So I totally agree with Chrome on this buy😁❤️
I drove a transit bus in Mpls the winters were COLD our busses were equipped with Webasto heaters and the bus was damn hot 🔥!!! Webasto all the way

Ray Outfitted only hears from people when they need help. You'll see comments of people here who have had success and feel good with their Chinese heater.
It all boils down to safety. It doesn't hurt to pay the extra funds to protect yourself and others, besides it's your home. A great vid Chrome Man and I like how Raynor explains the difference in great detail. Cheers!
Great video, but there is no temp sensor in that controller for the webasto, you will need the 1319842A|9005004B... or else it will use the internal sensor..
If I had that kind of money I'd get the truma combi so I could have heating and hot water together.
This is a very informative video. My experience with other purchases that are made in China has left me very disappointed. So I would not try the heater. Apart from that, I feel a strong need to buy American as a means of rebuilding our own country, economically speaking. So many things made in the USA are so costly that it is good economic sense to buy products from other places. However, buying American enables our own people to flourish and be self sustaining. So, even if it hurts, I'd encourage folks to save, save, save, and buy American, in all things that are made with quality.

Great video. I was wondering what you are going to do about heat. This is a very big price different, specially if one is planning to stay at the warmer climate in US, possible Mexico. One chilly night is not worth spending $1500. Keep up your good work.

I needed this video. I'm on a tight budget and have thought about buying the Chinese diesel heater from Amazon. That was why I asked which would be better between the Olympia catalytic wave 3 vs a chinese diesel during a past livestream.
Absolutely fantastic content! Amazing effort! I have worked for a Commercial truck dealership for 26 years. I install and service Espar and Webasto heaters often. I've had factory training on both. You made the right choice brother! VERY IMPORTANT...DO THE SEASONAL MAINTENANCE AS PER THE MANUAL AND RUN IT EVERY MONTH WETHER BEING USED OR NOT! Encouragement and love brother! Great job Rayner. I'm a 310s and 310t RSE as well.... btw, we were offering the sub-brand heaters (copy) for a while at the dealership, then stopped because they had nothing but repeat problems. No good for the commercial industry. Complete garbage. No comparison. Waste of money.

Just thinking, skip the propane, start with the chinesium. You can always upgrade later but have the foundation in place for the fuel and exhaust

I would prefer that when comparing items ‘knock offs’ be used vs. cheap (insert country) to avoid the negative tone towards any specific place. However, the information was interesting.

Watching the video it seems the Webasto has less chance of exhaust leak then the cheaper version. Considering the small space of most vans it would not take much to have a big issue with Carbon Monoxide. If there are ways to reduce this with the cheaper version, then maybe its worth considering. Chrome the only other thing that would have been great to add to the video would have been to actually have the units running so we could hear the noise difference. Thanks Chrome great video.

I also understand that the Chinese have a larger risk on causing fire. Losing your home and possibly getting hurt is much more expensive than the price difference

QUESTION - OK, so for those of you that purchase these heaters, not so much the cheap Chinese ones but the Webasto ones, are they easy to remove and install into another van when you buy a new vehicle?
Ray Outfitted says the heater can be removed and reinstalled. Some components you might replace such as exhaust as layout in new van might differ.
