Little tip, blowing on a cartridge actually does nothing beneficial towards pin synchronization with the gameboy. In fact it can do more harm than good because of saliva having the chance to land on a pin causing corrosion. You could use compressed air but even that has moisture in it and that would also risk corrosion. What actually leads to it working again is the fact of inserting and removing a cartridge which scrapes the grime that is causing a faulty connection on the pins thus eventually allowing the game to work. Ideally taking some 90% or above Iso alchohol along with something soft and small like a cotton swab and cleaning out the pins is a good way to go about cleaning. I'd recommend removing the plastic shell first before cleaning with iso to remove risk of damaging the case. If the case is dirty just clean with a damp cloth.
Awesome refurb. Also I personally like to reheat the sticker while pushing it down with a qtip while replacing it. They rarely come back up after that. Another trick is you can sometimes use a little spot of elmers glue where it's coming up and hold it down for about 30 seconds and then clean around the edges with just a wet qtip. That's how I did it back in the day. :)
I love love love my weller WES51. I have had them at work, at home, everywhere I've had to work on stuff. The adjustable knob is amazing. Knowing temps things behave at better is a huge plus
At 3:48 when you show the different size batteries, I wonder if a CR2025 would fit in that spot where the official CR1616 goes --- for extra longevity :)
Nice video Sean, just did something similar yesterday for my Mega Man game. I'm really looking forward to your DMG-01 recapping video. Hope you find time for that one. Love your videos man, keep going
Good work man 💪 Yeah, it's Amerika Oudan Kuizzu 2, which indeed appears to be America Ultra Quizz 2)) I wonder if the heating will work as well with MGB and DMG screen's pollarizer take out 🤔
Thanks for showing this hairdryer trick to us. Today I tried to remove a Gameboy cartridge label and I've totally failed. So next time I will try out your technique! :-)
@@FloTheArdea No, it isn't. Black Gameboy cartridges were compatible with both the original system and the Color, sporting enhancements on the latter. There were a lot of DX versions of earlier games released that way.
Dude unfortunately I think you’re going to need a repro label now. I need to do this with my battery save... I have already beaten the new links awakening you need to play it it’s amazing. Good work on the battery I think I would have just Delt with having a broken shell though but good job anyway.
JopieHaargel while many people did this and it may temporarily fix it, it actually causes long term damage as it blows dust further into the cartridge. It’s even worse if you blow into the console
I have an issue with the nintendo logo being a little garbled on one of my carts and not because of that not loading. Tried a couple other carts and had no issue. Cleaned the contacts on the cart, I'm positive the battery is dead but wondering if theres anything else I can do to try and save it.
@@esotericsean Couldnt find any corrosion, cleaned the whole board with IPA 99% still no luck. Havent tried reflowing or looking for shorts with a multimeter. No idea where to go lol.
@@gopatriots1991 I'm a year late but recently it was discovered that a lot of gameboy carts have an issue with the top right pins of the rom chip coming loose, so i'd check and see if you have any loose pins that need resoldering if it looks like nothing else is wrong.
Love the vids. Ive been repairing Nintendo handhelds for a little while now, what is the black screw mat/tray you have. Looks really useful especially since have carpet on my floors so it makes finding a screw or spring extremely difficult.
Trans America Ultra Quiz was a really popular quiz show on Japanese TV back in the late ‘70s and ‘80s & ‘90s! It was... bizarre, to say the least, but fun. 😂 m.ua-cam.com/video/qG7x6OKkGHY/v-deo.html
I've never been this early to one of your videos lol. Awesome! I made a video replacing a gameboy color screen and shell with a backlight LCD drop in kit if anyone's interested in seeing it.
Just an FYI don’t change ur battery like this it was perfect until you took the battery out you will lose all your save game date, use a separate battery and attach the plus and negative to the board BEFORE moving the battery then solder the new battery and then remove your spare one! Don’t lose date then! And in future buddy use a earthing strap so you don’t fry the circuitry especially on Zelda! Good video tho mate.

It's far easier to use a backup/flash interface that can be bought for like $30. Also, those straps are meant for mission critical PC work, not a $30 GB cart that was deigned to withstand a little bit of handling

Great video! Didn't realise how easy it was to change labels!
Also, I highly recommend Link's awakening on switch!
Very satisfying little restoration, great job

I highly recommend the Hakko FX 88D. I recently switched to it and have been in love with it.

The Custom Way of Gaming also you can use that trick taking off any stickers!
I'm gonna reshell my copy of Link's Awakening in one of the BoxyPixel brass cartridge shells.
Nice. I want to get one for Pokemon Gold.
I just picked up the gold anodized shell from boxypixel for my Pokémon yellow. Best decision ever. Do it.
Always awesome videos thanks for sharing don't add super glue to the corner of the sticker you'll end up regretting it
You should get the black cartridge with Links Awakening DX; it's a color enhanced version of the game.
That's unofficial.

I'm also interested in knowing in a better soldering iron. Mine gets durty to quick.
TS 100 with a chisel tip
Whats the progress on the vw bus?
Perfect as always my friend, now you need only one box for it, neominibox from deadpanrobot are awesome indeed!!

I love my TS12 from KSGER on AliExpress, it works well and is nice and compact. I've also had a Hakko FX888 which is excellent.
Cartridge restoration.
Also blows onto the pins
Which is step 1 in any cart repair, as retro enthusiasts/old people will tell you.

Have you taken a look inside the cartridge? It could be corroded in there.

there is no gamebit link in the description like you said. i find 2 different sizes online. which one do i need to get?
Ah whoops, it's the smaller one of the two, but they usually are sold in pairs.

Hakko FX888D or TS80
I also always name my character Link in every Zelda game.
for the price it is hard to beat an uy chan ts100 soldering iron
Its satisfying in a way.. please do that with other games too :)
Wish you had cleaned off the stain as well.
Never played links awakening on gb. I bought the switch version, and love it!
Anyone else really bothered the new battery wasn't perfectly in the middle of the circle?
Why people blow at the cartridges?!!!

Aoyue 968A+ is pretty awesome. A bit pricey but comes with tons of useful stuff. I picked mine up for $175 on amazon.
Don't blow the cart... That only makes it worse down the line :[

You should get the Switch version it's the remaster of the game.
I have since making this video got the Switch version and it was great! :)
Not bad.... not really a restoration though.
