Some corrections and clarifications: - Anime was exploding in popularity in the 2000s in the west, mostly driven by fansubs. Toonami was basically there as a gateway and for more casual fans but the anime community lived and breathed around fansubs of whatever was airing in the current season up until Crunchyroll took over that role. So characterizing that period as feeling stagnant in comparison to the 90s and 2010s feels misleading and myopic because it was the growth started in the 2000s that kicked off the explosion in the 2010s. - Attack on Titan was never a Shonen Jump title, it was published in a completely separate magazine. - While Chainsaw Man did run in Shonen Jump, since part 2 started it has been published on Jump+ instead. - Spy x Family was always a Jump+ title.
Kagurabachi is gonna slam in the west once its adapted. And the Dandadan anime will end up putting it in the magazine like what happened to Chainsaw man

10:19 Actually, Totally Not Mark found out the origin of the name "Big 3" after talking to Crunchyroll staff. The truth is that Weekly Shounen Jump always has a survey page at the end of each issue asking readers which chapters in the magazine have the most influence on them. Since 2000, of course, it has always been One Piece, Naruto and Bleach (except for the one time Toriko almost replaced Bleach in this survey). That is also the main reason Jump wants to invest more in promoting these three series - starting with bringing the 3 anime versions of these 3 names abroad, always using the images of these 3 series in important events. Yep, the "Big 3" are completely real, recognized by Jump itself, not completely a name created by Western fans. It's not just called by the name "Big 3".
We’re entering an era where new series will have more of room to breathe with some juggernaut IPs out of the way. I think it’s the type of landscape that could allow unexpected contenders to really blow up making it hard to predict right now. It should be really interesting to see what the next few years look like.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane 😭 Im glad I was born in the generation that was the big 3 and the rise of shounen anime/manga because so many beautiful stories were written and told and I got to experience them. I think the people who want another big 3 are the people who werent there to experience it because it really was such a precious time reading theamga weekly and watching it on Toonami or [adult swim]
And yes in JJK i didnt immediately love it either but I liked it. Season 1 was good and I was getting very similar Bleach vibes from it because it had a more mature dark atmosphere to it but it wasn't until I read HI/PD that I fell in love with Gege story telling in a short span of 15 chapter with so much conveyed. Hes got talent, I just wish he had expanded and explored more with it.
At least to me, an anime newbie, it's weird how the weekly magazine post JJK is banking so much on the success of Kagurabachi and sorta Sakamoto Days to be hits while Jump + has been doing great in comparison: Spy x Family is obvious how big of a hit that's been, Chainsaw Man Part 2 has moved to Jump +, Kaiju no 8 has been going strong, Dadadan is already a massive hit and the first episode of its anime has had amazing reception, Choujin X is loved by Tokyo Ghoul fans and could get just as big if given a proper anime adaptation, Wild Strawberry feels like it could be a cult classic horror-action if handled properly, and Ruri Dragon feels like it could be the next cute girl anime to take over the internet (even more than it already has), and those are just the ones I'm familiar with, maybe this is a turning point in how digitally published manga are becoming just as big or bigger than manga published in weekly magazines (not to mention how the authors of Jump + manga often has more creative freedom and looser publishing schedules than the weekly magazine authors)
Mission yozakura family is in its final arc and so is black clover. I honestly think it’s gonna be Kagurabachi and Dandadan that take the reigns over for Shonen Jump. And yeah I agree that spy family will be one of the face of Shonen Jump that takes over.
You have plenty of great manga ready to replace the previous series. A few I can think of are kagurabachi, sakamoto days, and my personal favorite dandadan. You also have spy family and undead unluck continuing. I believe when one era ends, there will always be new manga ready to step up.
I'm totally okay if there is a new big 3 or even big 2 of shonen for todays gen. But it's up to Shueisha to prompt and market them up in mainstream. Also Japanese readers preferences are important too as they are the one who mostly buy Shonen jump and deciding in that magazine poll which manga they like the most.
17:28 It's worth noting that Shonen Jump appears to be launching a contest soon, with prominent artists such as the author of My Hero Academia selecting candidates for recognition or something similar.
it was really more like the big 2 (Naruto/Bleach) OP didn't start catching on stateside until after Naruto started winding down and Bleach was on its last legs
I might be biased since ive been reading since chapter 7 but, i think kagurabachi is gonna be big too! its just an all in all good package! great characters, amazing panels, a simple power system. it doesnt break the meta by any means, but its doing great. for someone who dislikes demonslayer, its just demonslayer done right^^ and it COULD reach the same heights ^^
The Origin of the Big 3 is probably due to Proto-weebs importing the concept of the Golden Trio. A semi-official marketing term used in the previous generation of Shonen Jump (Dragonball's for a framd of reference) to denote their three most popular titles usually shown by being constantly at the front page in marketing. This might be why the term, there will not be another Big Three also fits for some as One Piece can be said to have continued into not one but two new generations (even if its set to end in the current one) which kind of screwed over those who would have normally replaced it.
@@selfishbeats It does. The big 3 were the 3 manga that dominated Shonen Jump during the 2000's and saved it from bankruptcy after Dragon Ball ended. No other 3 manga will ever do that again. @@selfishbeats The problem with "the new big 3" is that there no definitive one. Everyone has their own headcanon of what it is and constantly arguing about it. One of the issues with modern manga is that a lot of them are transitioned to fully digital which makes stuff look so stiff and lifeless. The way newer manga has the CSM and JJK approach to artstyle makes the characters look so sterilized.
