yup, a simple solution, even more so for Amex customers, to get your money back so long as it's justified and you aren't a twat who abuses it due to a case of victim mentality.
As someone that has worked in the card industry for Merchant disputes this the worst advise to give understand that if you're claiming fraud and get a provisional credit while the fraud concern is being investigated the Merchant will provide proof of purchase such as online reservation or check in confirmation and will come back and have the charges reapplied and a normal dispute case will continue. Just make sure you check your reservation agreements and cancelation policies especially when traveling outside the U.S as some have a 24 hr before window and get a email confirmation if possible. The worst would be a call and nothing to confirm it was canceled and refunds issued.
This happened to me years ago in a Phnom Penh Hotel. I was staying there for overseas work, so about 2 months. I would pay weekly and get a stamped receipt each time. I paid for the final week and received a stamped receipt as always. On the final day, I was checking out and the woman at the desk tells me that I didn't pay for the last week. She was insistent. I showed her my receipt, but she still insisted that I didn't pay. Even had tears in her eyes. I simply walked out. I'm not sure if someone was cooking the books and stealing and this woman was innocent or what, but I wasn't going to pay twice.
Yup. Someone did it to me in a coffee shop. I literally paid for my coffee, got a receipt and sat down, drank it and left. The woman who gave me the receipt came running down the street demanding money. I showed her my receipt and she put her head down. I yelled at her and told her, "Try again you little b." I am a woman and when I see 20 something girls trying to steal it passes me off.

Unfortunately, in the last 50 years, Mexico has gotten worse and not better, for a country that borders the usa, they seem forever trapped in a third world paradigm. Corruption, violence, fraud, lawlessness. It is sad.
Which is a common occurrence in Mexico. The way to avoid that is don't book anything through these resorts. Don't even use any of their equipment that you have to "check out" under your name.

Similar situation just happened to me and my family in March but it was at the Planet Hollywood Cancun resort. The scheme is the same but smaller scale. The "manager" at check out said we had to pay for a $80 bottle of wine before we could check out. We had never ordered any wine and when we asked for the signed meal ticket he had every other receipt from all the places we ate but somehow was missing the receipt for this fabricated charge. He stalled and acted as if he was on the phone with guest services to locate this fake wine receipt until our airport transfer was going to leave us which forced us to pay. They run these schemes all the time.
@Space Rock, you're right they won't get $80 for the fake wine charge if you call the policia. They'll just get $40 and the other $40 goes to your saviors.
Imagine that, corrupt 3rd world shit hole country ran by drug cartels does corrupt things. No reason to go to Mexico. They don't have anything you can't find at an American hotel
The similar thing happens frequently here in the US. My wife and I stayed in a hotel in Chicago on a business trip. When we went to check out there was $300 of extra charges. Daily Newspaper I never saw. Gymnasium fee, I don't do gym stuff. Resort fee for use of the swimming pool I never swim in and the best one, 7 Days of car parking. We didn't have a car. The front desk demanded we pay these extra charges before they would give us a receipt until I raised my voice and began speaking to everyone in the lobby, informing them what was being done to them. All of a sudden the manager comes out and says nevermind we will remove those charges.
@@watching789 they did not attempt to detain us physically. Or to put it another way they could not have detained us physically. Although that would have been interesting and by then I was in the mood.
They should have recorded when they asked about the charge, once front desk would not refund, simply walk away and address with your bank credit card and deny the charge.
Many, many years ago in Cancun, at a restaurant, they added extra drinks, food and a fee for entertainment. I told the Manager, his two options, a)Remove the items from the bill or b)when back at USA I was going to place the whole bill in dispute with the bank, he was smart and opted for option a. Be careful, all of those places lives with the tourism and they will try to screw you at and chance that may occur. The same applies to de Dominican Republic and other places

My family and I were in Cancun over Spring Break. We thought we'd try a different resort, El Cid in Puerto Morales. When we got there in the late afternoon and checked in there was a dispute about us having a private concierge. We paid for it according to the website description, and receipt but they wanted to charge us 70 dollars a day x 2 because we had 2 rooms. Next the food was horrible, next both rooms smelled of mold really bad, and our daughter's rooms had stains on the bed spread. Yes stains ( you know what I mean), disgusting! Also, they said we had to pay 35.00 U.S. dollars a day x 2 for wifi. It wasn't included. We didn't even unpack, walked down and told them we were checking out. After them being very rude, and telling me they would not refund us and would charge 400.00+ U.S. dollars a night x 2 for 5 nights. As I stood there in this situation I got names and found the corporate email and started typing and added the pictures, even of the mini bar which consisted of 2 cans of beer and 2 diet drinks, not even water. I told the manager if I don't get a refund I'm pushing send. We got half back and are working on the rest. We couldn't leave fast enough. This place is horrible. We went to another resort that we've been to before and enjoyed of trip. Yeah, they'll get nasty with you but I'm hopeful, in time these bad places will get a bad reputation and it will hurt their business.
WHY did you take your family INTO MEXICO WHEN AMERICA'S STATE DEPARTMENT HAS ISSUED ADVISORY NOT TO TRAVEL TO MEXICO? ARE you one of the PEOPLE who think nothing will happen to you?
@@rahmann4280 Yes, the US has crime sprees but they don't have tourists being killed with machine guns or being kidnapped, held for ransom, and killed like they do in Mexico.
That was my first thought is Mexico is aware that we are having financial issues throughout our country and they’re trying to screw people in scam people even a simple as our phones and our Internet accessibilities being hacked all the time there a constant scams from other countries
Apparently from a coworker who experienced the same thing in Mexico it appears to be fairly common. She and her husband we're detained by staff security and feared for their life as the travel company she booked went bankrupt while on vacation and the hotel said they had to pay them for lost revenue at the regular daily hotel rate which and not the discounted rate they got through their travel package. After 20+ years going to Mexico she was so freaked out that she said her and her husband will never return. Too bad, because Mexico Resorts are nice but things do appear to be been getting more unsafe in recent years.
this sounds like xenophobia. if you had a great experience for 20 years, and this one issue happened, then I wouldn't say the entire country is to blame. After 20 years, then you should know what you're doing. I had a bad experience in Houston, does that mean all of Houston is bad and I should by default avoid all of TX? the entire US southwest? Americans and Europeans always find a reason to paint every non-White person or area with a broad brush, and would give themselves the invidual benefit of the doubt. the only wrong with "Mexico" is the exact same thing wrong with Mexico 20 years ago when your friend started going.

@Charlotte you obviously wrote your comment without ever thinking why those non-white folks go to America and Europe for a better life. What could've possibly led to the situation which would force them from their home countries to Europe and America. If your answer isn't hundreds of years of traditional and modern (neo) colonialism, then you don't have selective memory, you have a lack of education. Notice how they're not running to stay in Eastern Europe? It's still Europe. Yet, they go out of their way to make it to western Europe🤔🤔 Why? Also, I'm not even sure why I'm answering because you're obviously a troll. Europe and Canada go out of their way to scam and rob white Americans. You obviously haven't travelled much.
I booked through a service that gave a 1200 voucher. Double checked the details when checking in, when it was time to leave, that said we owed $1250 and said I had to take it up with whom I booked with. There was another couple there having the same issue but booked though a different company
Mexico is fabulous. Don’t buy “plans” and in spite of what any literature tells you, tips are not included. Contact hotels individually. Cabs are affordable and ignore all time share sharks and tour promoters and go right to cabs or pick up.

If you don't want to be dead , you would pay up. Cops worked for those resorts in Mexico. Good luck calling them. And just about every other service is also controlled by those Mafia run places. This is exactly what happened to my daughter and grandchild when they stayed at the Emporium. My daughter eventually had no option but to pay. They told her payment did not go thru and requested another card. She supplied another and was told that did not go thru either. She eventual had to use a debit card and draw the cash. When she got home after 2 days travel to SA she learned the transactions had gone thru 3 times. To this day the extra 1 night accommodation was paid for 4 times. She will never stay there again. The problem came when she had to spend another night at the hotel due to meeting COVID isolation restriction which we were told was 14 nights but turned out to be 15 nights instead.
She should had called the credit card companies when she got home to list the three other charges as fraud! She should also put a credit freeze on her credit for a couple of months.

Actually the people at the resort could have handled it differently however not sure if it was their fault. Because the person who cancelled the tour should have done their job properly then none of this would have happened. The hotel staff were doing their job in not letting someone go because of an unpaid bill. Let's say the family was lying and the staff did let them go. The staff would have been in trouble for not doing their job properly. This whole thing is disgusting and scary. That was a family, imagine if it was a person on their own. Very confrontational and uneasy thing to deal with especially also if you do not speak their language. Shame on the person who cancelled the tour and did not do their job properly. Next time ask for an email confirmation and print that out and bring it with you. I knew they would get their money back however what a hassle to go through and what a way to end a great vacation.
I actually went to this hotel in January they do this shit all the time. They tried to force us to pay $500 because we arrived a day late due to a flight cancellation which was already resolved over the phone until we got there and they said that never happened and it’s not their policy

Happened to me at the airport leaving punta cana. My bag was a little heavier and I asked if I could just remove the stuff from it to make it lighter. The receptionist said no that I immediately had to pay $100 extra for the 2 lbs. I said no way. She kept trying to make me pay $100 and I told her flat out no, you’re not gonna try to rip me off. I didn’t care that everyone was watching, including her manager who came over to ask what was wrong and the lady said nothing. I told him flat out that I knew what they were trying to do. So I took my bag, took out the extra stuff, got it checked for no extra fee and boarded my plane. I feel like that receptionist was being told by higher ups to get more money out of tourists when they checked their bags. But it was a crazy situation.
It seems they target larger groups and families I larger resorts. I stay in local family owned hotels when I go to Mexico. I am by myself and pay in cash. I even get discounts to stay longer. Many unadvertised places are now safer.

As a hospitality professional, advanced deposit bookings sound good at first sight but you have to read the rules. Many don't and just assume one can cancel. It clearly states ...once booked, deposit will be taken, some take deposit of either entire stay, 1st night or other. People see cheap and book it without really understanding and then make a bit fuss at check out. This is a constant thing and usually try to educate guests prior to booking as they should but as adults sometimes we just don't care and act like we make the rules. Other rates are flexible with canceling or shortening stays and yes they are a little more. So, maybe we all try to read and educate yourself before doing so. Remember it's your money and YOU Booked it ....not the hotel.

Interesting story until you get to 2:18 in the video where they suggest that 'travel experts' advise against pre-booking excursions, for a bunch of reasons that simply are inaccurate. Having been in the travel industry for nearly 20 years, I don't know any agent that doesn't pre-book excursions or recommending this to their clients. 1) Tours DO sell out. 2) Pre-booking is usually LESS because you don't get screwed on exchange rates. 3) Not sure if the price is a rip off? Ask a travel agent who is an EXPERT in these things. 4) Why bargain for your safety and security - go with a tour operator that is responsible, even if it's more than "Johnny's best tour service" 5) Most tours can either be cancelled or re-scheduled if the weather isn't good. This is standard stuff.

In the 5 days I spent in the immigration jail in Acapulco, I had a private room, they bought me 2 restaurant meals a day and when I told them that it might be cold back in the US when I get there, they gave me a jacket and a blanket that they said they took off of some central american "guests". They then gave me a free flight back to the US. Just as we were getting in the immigration "taxi" to take me to the airport, this female agent opens up a window and yells to one of the agents driving me asking him if I had paid the fine.
I'm not sure if someone was cooking the books and stealing and this woman was innocent or what, but I wasn't going to pay twice.
Yup. Someone did it to me in a coffee shop. I literally paid for my coffee, got a receipt and sat down, drank it and left. Similar situation just happened to me and my family in March but it was at the Planet Hollywood Cancun resort. The scheme is the same but smaller scale.

She and her husband we're detained by staff security and feared for their life as the travel company she booked went bankrupt while on vacation and the hotel said they had to pay them for lost revenue at the regular daily hotel rate which and
not the discounted rate they got through their travel package.
Ugh, I’m still fighting an ~$800 charge from the Atlantis Royal in Bahamas. They charged me 5 times for 7 pictures ($187 for 7 picture package, huge rip off to begin with). Spent the last two days of my trip trying to get it resolved. Thought all was taken care of, only to see my credit cards were charged all 5 times. And I’ve already spent $72 in international calling fees trying to get this resolved.
Glad this couple was able to get their money back. They need compensation for the hassle too.
My daughter-in-law was held by the Mexican officials at the airport and she had to pay $100 to be released. She had a CIGARETTE vape. The Mexican officials demanded $500 but settled for $100.
I instructed her to call the State Dept. Too bad, so sad they said.
I’ve got a relative retired out there. He told me always be ready to bribe cops if pulled over. He had some friends that were also ex pats down there that didn’t think it was right to have to bribe them so they argued with the cops and didn’t. They got taken straight to jail over a petty supposed traffic violation. Lot of lawlessness down there
Why you would patronize a country that has more cartel than anywhere?.
Too many problems in Cancun for me. From tainted booze to this kind of fleecing of tourists. No thanks!
Why do people from Tampa go to Cancun? They drive 25 minutes and be in Clearwater or any of the beaches south of there. No hassles, no flights, no customs, no rip offs.
Just cancelled my plans to go there. Thanks for bringing to light the scams that go on....
4) Why bargain for your safety and security - go with a tour operator that is responsible, even if it's more than "Johnny's best tour service"
5) Most tours can either be cancelled or re-scheduled if the weather isn't good. This is standard stuff.
I was going to say the same. Such bad advice is given.
Exactly. As an agent, I can verify... YES, things sell out.
Wrong. Its always cheaper to book tours with boots on the ground. More options too. Sometimes much better options.
@@kissme4492 Yep I've had clients tell me that too, then call me because their guy didn't show up or overcharged them or added extra costs that they thought should have been included. I mean, as travel advisors, we've booked thousands of excursions for our clients, but if you've taken one or two tours yourself, you're probably an. expert too.
@@ChristineTurner Sorry I don't do American Organized tours. I show up and explore on my own. If I need someone to hold my hand I would go on a cruise. Travel Booking Industry is DEAD.
Incidents like this and about a hundred other reasons are why it's best to stay clear of Mexico.
Many years ago (before smart or cell phones), I stayed at a hotel here in the US. When I went to checkout, they said I owed them for calls made on the phone in the room. I never touched it and told them so. They insisted I had, but they had no details like when the call occurred and what number was called. They said it was all electronic (well, duh). They let it slip that after anyone checks out, they clear the calls on the phone for the next patron, so I expect they hadn't done that when I arrived. They honestly told me they forget the charges, but to NEVER DO IT AGAIN. No problem. In 40 years, I've never been back.
Well I’ll make sure I never go the Hard rock anywhere. Too much
Smart to deal with it when you get back . Might disappear otherwise
Exactly
Moral of the story: stay away from the Hard Rock hotel in Cancun, at least until there is a management change.
Corruption is rampant.
Send those employees to jail
Like I tell everyone who travels to Mexico... "Are you stupid"?
Racist trumptard
Why. America is worse on violence
@@auroramothergoddess World Atlas ranks Mexico as 25 homicides per 100,000 people. It ranks the US as 5 homicides per 100,000 people. So if youre ranking all 230 countries , Mexico ranks as the 19th highest murder rate in the world. US ranks 89 in the same study.
So the moral of the story is, Mexico is a miserable and dangerous shcithole
Your comment regarding Mexico is racist
My family travels to Mexico all the time through cruising never had a problem Book all activities through the cruise line ahead Mexico is fabulous if you know how to do it right.
Same thing happened to me in CABO.... but I knew the guys name who canceled our spa packages. Its threatening AF... and if they aren't going to do their job and cancel it AT LEAST leaving a notation in your file would help this from happening. I'm a hot head so the moment they said I was going to be detained & staying in Cabo until I paid... I went on 10! Yes, they all apologized but no one should ever have to go through this.
I extended my stay at one resort. Did you know if you use a credit card or debit card in Cabo, they can put an additional hold on your money, no questions asked. I paid for an additional night and they put a 54 dollar hold on my card for 3 weeks. My credit card said they couldn't do anything because it was a "travel hold". I was livid.
When you leave the US. Your have zero rights. You barely have some here
I'm not sure why anyone goes on vacation to Mexico. There are so many other nice places with beautiful beaches. Why put yourself at risk with a heavily corrupt government and extremely common criminal activity?
Very well known resort in Jamaica tried this on me. After bickering and being threatened with missing flight and Jamaican jail, I signed the credit card slip “Signed Under Duress”. Not only was the fraudulent charges removed, we got refunded the whole stay!
You were really lucky. That's it
Please share the resort's name.
Good idea with the signing...
@@cbounds3265 THE big chain there.
I never buy excursions in advance in case something happens and the trip is delayed or canceled. It is way more difficult to deal with the excursions agents than with the travel agencies. I am sorry for your horrible experience 🤔
This happen to us last week and I thought I’d never get out of Mexico City and Neuvo, Laredo Mexico! Mexico is a NO! NO!
The same thing???
Thanks for bring this matter to light, I am a member of the Hardrock club and will be way more careful when going on vacation from now on!
They will scam you 1 way or another, glad you and family made back home safe.
Vacation timeshare the biggest scam ever!!!
Should've put it on the Amex Plat.
Amex always has the customer's back.
Sue them! Sue every individual working in that establishment and squeeze them out of every penny so that they’re homeless!
Exactly as the lady said at the end. You never pay for extras at the beginning...you get up with those guys at the last minute when they are trying to fill spots and you will get nearly half of more off...seen it and done it
We had a glorious time in Cancun! Wish it was safe to go back. Even though the resort was heavily guarded I wouldn't feel safe going now.
It’s safe to go and safer than many US cities.
You heard they were unarmed. And those are private guards giving that service SMH
@@luis_g.1383 what? I mean the crime in general in Mexico.
@@LC.1990 Oh like if in the States everything was in color pink. 😂 Like if y'all didn't have crime, robberies, rapes etc stfu 😂😂😂🥴
@@luis_g.1383, geez. Calm down, dude. I'm well aware of the crime in the US. That's why I'd rather vacation somewhere with a very low crime rate/a place that doesn't have travel advisories.
You can't detain someone over a unpaid bill. Not paying a bill is a civil matter not criminal.
They did the right thing paying the bill, and reasoning with someone later. Or they could have waited and missed their flights, then straitened it out. Spouting the law to mexican hotel employees, then police would eventually get your scull cracked.
I like to get off the beaten track. I have been robbed by mexican police three times The first time I was pulled over. They took all the groceries we just bought at Costco. Kept asking where are cash and drugs were. Told us if they saw is again they would plant drugs on us. Second and third time in a neighborhood I shouldn't be in took half my money. Told if they see me again they would plant drugs on me.
When U go into a different country , don’t expect to be treated like the United States
Fire the manager! He was more interested in being right then helping his customers!
Well, what can I say. You can't get blood( or money) out of a turnip. And I am a a big turnip. I have been living and commuting back and forth between the US and MX for the last 40 years, and yes, there have been a few minor incidents. But since my economic condition has almost always been between being homeless and being indigent, I never worry about some incompetents trying to extort money out of me. In fact, when I was caught with an expired tourist visa in 2011, I had about 2 USD on me. Being that I had befriended him during my stay, he just smiled and waved her off! He even offered me a job when I returned to MX. Mexico is great. Just be humble ( very hard for a lot of americans), don't argue, be friendly, and be poor.
If youre a turnip, how can you type? Especially such a long comment? Pretty sure turnips don't have hands
Oh so you're the guy that tried selling me genuine imitation junk on the beach... :p
@@j.thomas7128 wait so is he a turnip or not
@@j.thomas7128 No, I never did that, but I did go and up the beaches of Puerto Vallarta selling all day trips to secluded beaches only accessible by boat....and quite successfully.
@@RishayanPorMexico thinking on that... hi total and complete stranger. I want somebody I've never met to take me by boat (so loud nobody will hear me scream) to a place so secluded that nobody would find my body for years (if ever) in a country that's bulging and billowing with violence! LoL
In all seriousness, you must be a heck of a salesman! I was more comfortable partying in Bogata and Cartagena in the 90's than going to TJ or Juarez now. I won't even go to Rosarita Beach anymore after that last bloody tourist kidnapping.
Glad I had looked at this video now I’ll pass on traveling to Cancun
Let's hope that the hotel loses millions of dollars over a couple of thousand dollars.
I bet many people have cancelled their bookings with the hotel.
Learned lesson: All cancellations and the response should be in writing and printed out for backup.
Seriously.
Mexican business tried to rip you off.
We are all just so surprised.
You can, if you plan in advance, choose a country for your vacation that's NOT run by drug cartels...
Not going to Mexico anytime soon.
No one wants you over there anyways
This is why I love American Express. Its a problem? Ill pay for it and file a chargeback and have them fight for me.
That’s what you get for leaving Florida. I mean come on with all the beaches and resorts in Tampa let alone you choose to do this?? 🤦🏾♂️
This is ridiculous …. How can this error happened without looking on their papers and holding them in the hotel … they might have charge you more if you stayed much longer etc.
Sounds like cartel business type like
It's a shakedown. What else would expect there. ?
Exactly
Wow we happened to google Hard Rock because about 14 of us wanted to go to Cancun and stay there. This popped up in our search. I would have paid it and the second I was on the plane, I would have called my visa company and told them that charge was fradulent and had it refunded and let those criminals cheat someone else. We are SO glad we saw this video!
Hard Rock Cancun handled that horribly . That manager should be fired !
This is why you use a travel advisor. The travel advisor is able to rectify things on your behalf and the resorts do not want to turn down a travel advisors requests who sends them a lot of business. And using a travel advisor is absolutely free. Their commissions are already built into the price you see online.
They charge full price. Even after the Cartel extortion, you still pay less.
I remember something happend in Gold Coast, Australia at surfers paradise when i checked in for 4 nights they took beside the 300 aud + 417 dollar (4300 sek) that i didnt got back, not untill i was back in Sweden and my bank fixed it i had the refund back, moral of the story is; it happends everywere not only in Cancun!
Ill never visit that place
What if you didnt have the money?! Then you go to jail?! That is absurd.
